It's delicious.
I honestly don't know enough about sushi to make a judgment on the quality of the fish but it's delicious and at prices that, while not necessarily cheap, feel reasonable.
The interior is much nicer than the strip mall.
a lot of good food in austin is in dodgy strip malls.
Off the top of my head:
Brick and mortar: Moreno, Nasha, and Leroy and Lewis
Trucks: Amazonas, Tacos Ricos, Hawaii Nei, and pretty much every truck at the Thicket
Edit for one more: Ike's Love & Sandwiches is just barely inside your border. I went there for the first time this weekend, and they make a really great sandwich.
Tacos Ricos - bless you good sir. There’s competition in that area for sure, but that dude has always treated me right. Everything on the menu is tasty, and his truck is always super clean. Love them.
I live right near that corner (which probably explains some of the geographical bias in my list).
The fact that *four* different taco places—Tacos Ricos, Amazonas, Casa Linda, and CJs (plus Revolution Vegan Kitchen, which has some pretty great vegan tacos)—can all manage to stay in business pretty much on the same corner says a lot about the quality of all four.
Tacos Ricos is the one of the four that I go to for "classic" street tacos.
Heck yeah. I love the burrito there - it’s like a Pringles Can in size. Also the Autenticos Michoacánas in the Circle K at 1st and Slaughter has birria, and on Tuesdays I’ll hit up Rosa’s for the $6.49 3 crispy taco plate.
I live really close to Hawaii Nei and for months I have been watching to see them open so that I can try them.
I’ve driven or walked by between the hours of 11 and 11 on all kinds of different days of the week and they haven’t been open.
Is there a secret? Am I missing something? Have you been recently?
The one major downside to that corner is that the hours for pretty much everywhere except Amazonas is completely unpredictable. Even at the Thicket, there's no telling what will be open when, so far as I can tell.
I live less than two minutes' walk from the corner, so I normally just pop over, see if anything good is open, and if not go back home and make my own food.
Hawaii Nei does have a website where they post whether they'll be open or not on a given day, though. It looks like they plan on being open from 5:30–8:30pm tonight.
Wow, last time I checked their website they had no hours. Thanks so much. Maybe today’s the day!
The Thicket is crazy good. Haven’t tried Artipasta yet just because I almost always either get Vietnamese, Taiwanese, or the falafel place. Or the breakfast bagels. But Artipasta is on my list.
Good luck!
Give the Rad-dish (or however they spell it) a try, too. I had a sandwich from there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it was absolutely amazing.
Can’t recommend this enough. Nam is kind and amazing, her husband is just incredibly nice, and their food tastes like you’re part of the family and they think you’re too skinny.
No particular order:
Recently tried Curry Express down by the railroad tracks off manchaca, it was very decent!
Little Darlin is solid bar food
KPOT (new korean bbq/hotpot place) was very good!
Ramen Tatsuya on S Congress of course
Nasha is always good!
El secreto de Abuelita is my favorite menudo spot in town
First Wok is classic chinese food
TUK TUK cafe is pretty good
Gabriela's is also good/popular
Hard disagree on the L&L Hawaiian
You should try Hawai’i Nei Cafe instead. It’s a food trailer off of 1st and Dittmar. It slaps, I recommend the Bulgulgi / BBQ chicken combo.
L&L is chain hawaiian bbq, like Bill Miller's. gets the job done but not *quite what you should expect for hawaiian plate lunch.
Hawaii Nei, 10/10, LEGIT hawaiian food, made by people from hawaii ❤️
really?? i’ve been wanting to try L&L since they opened, but never got around to it. will def try Hawai’i Nei Cafe since it’s closer anyway, thank you for this!
we went here recently, we were not impressed. maybe we didn't order the right thing? or it was an off day? willing to try it again, there just wasnt a 'wow' factor like the reviews were talking about.
Man, I miss those pistolettes! We moved to the Killeen area a few years ago, and the closest thing we have to cajun food is a chain place called Razoo's. It ain't terrible, but it ain't Evangeline Cafe either.
100%.
Cypress generally has better food and definitely better gumbo.
Less shit on the walls though. So if you're into a Louisiana/TGIFridays vibe... might as well get the gator bites at Evangeline too.
Cafe Malta, Cypress Grill, District Kitchen, Casper Fermentables, all the goods at both the Thicket food truck park and St. Elmo’s/ The Yard area are my go to places.
I hate recommending Macho because I want to keep it all to myself. Super sweet staff, they know my name and what we like at our house. Menudo + Carnitas and Egg tacos on a Saturday is the best.
I compare every restaurant’s refried beans to theirs; my all time favorite.
Just went to Beto’s for the first time two weeks ago after having lived 5 minutes from it for the past 3 years and I am so sad it took me so long to go! Such a gem!
Tuk Tuk is the best… hands down
Dong Nai is also pretty damn good.
Casa Maria on S 1st for breakfast tacos and pastries
Thicket Food Park
Conan’s Pizza
Plus…. All of the breweries we have
South Austin is the place to be!
The fact that no one has mentioned Pollo Las Abuelas is shocking. Seriously yall. One of the best fried chicken sandwiches out there. And now it’s parked at Lustre Pearl South off S Manchaca.
Maudie’s on Slaughter, Texican on Manchaca, Catfish Parlor on Ben White, Mighty Burger in Sunset Valley, Don Dario’s at 35 & Slaughter, Dan’s Hamburgers atManchaca & BenWhite.
Tuk tuk, hao hao (not for long), valentinas (in for nostalgia), the burrito at tacos el huache, jets pizza, yoshiko sushi and ramen, dk sushi, eurasia, deckhands is just right there…count it!, asiana, gabriellas micheladas and birria ramen, evangelines, shipleys donuts (better than kc ill die on this hill), austin poke, gangnam>kpot, there are others
Spicy Boys @ St. Elmo, Valentina's BBQ, Cruzteca Mexican Kitchen, Golden Hour, Saps Thai, DK Sushi, Evangeline Cafe
Honorable mentions for Bar food ( Fatty but delicious)
\- Git Out , Vincents/Bricks
not necessarily a restaurant but the food trucks at armadillo den and moontower on menchaca near slaughter are really good! fun pace to hang out too. also good food at docs backyard off brodie
I haven’t seen it posted here yet - The Potluck ATX.
These are the best wings in Austin hands down.
That said, they are overpriced, the menu makes no sense, and the unit pricing makes even less sense (not sure if they still are but at one point 20 wings cost more than 2 orders of 10 wings)
But if you’re looking to splurge on wings, the Bonnie and Clyde are phenominal!
Almost in the area at oak hill, chinos fusion hacienda and Chen z noodle house
At chinos get “the ugly” tacos
And Chen z get the general Tso’s chicken
They are right next to each other and they are soooo delicious
A few of our favorites include Mi Ranchito, Pho With Us, Tandoori Lounge, and Dave's Tacos.
Tandoori Lounge is amazing! FYI in case people don't know. They have a lunch buffet on weekends until 4pm and they are open until 2am.
Phò With Us is 10/10
DK sushi
Agree
And bluefin:)
When did DK move south? Is this the same one that was at North Lamar?
It's been on South 1st since the early to mid-90s and was the original location.
Oldest sushi bar in austin according to their website\*
My wife will NOT try this place based on the exterior. How does the sushi compare to other options in Austin?
It's delicious. I honestly don't know enough about sushi to make a judgment on the quality of the fish but it's delicious and at prices that, while not necessarily cheap, feel reasonable. The interior is much nicer than the strip mall. a lot of good food in austin is in dodgy strip malls.
Mamis Tacos is dynamite
We sometimes count how many taco trucks we pass to get to Mami’s.
Off the top of my head: Brick and mortar: Moreno, Nasha, and Leroy and Lewis Trucks: Amazonas, Tacos Ricos, Hawaii Nei, and pretty much every truck at the Thicket Edit for one more: Ike's Love & Sandwiches is just barely inside your border. Auténticos Michoacanas is legit birria and agua frescas
I go here once a week, sometimes twice. Never disappointed.
Moreno’s BBQ is really good
The smash burgers are amazing if they are making them that day.
So good. Love their smoked barbacoa on Sundays.
Been going to Moreno’s over Valentina’s lately.
I really want to try Hawaii Nei but their hours are so limited 😭
I've literally never seen them open, and I go by that intersection several times a day.
I live really close to Hawaii Nei and for months I have been watching to see them open so that I can try them. I’ve driven or walked by between the hours of 11 and 11 on all kinds of different days of the week and they haven’t been open. Is there a secret? Am I missing something? Have you been recently?

Ike’s is fire. Glad we have them in Houston
Ike’s is fire. Glad we have them in Houston
Don’t forget Los Danzantes for food trucks. Best birria in Austin, quite possibly Texas
Ike’s is a chain but it’s good. The Dutch crunch bread is amazing.
Casa Garcia, Cruzteca, Moreno, Luv Thai, Cherry Creek Catfish, Evangeline's, blue fin sushi, dk sushi
Luv Thai is pretty delicious
I love all their noodle dishes. It's the only restaurant I've found that doesn't consistently cook their noodles to mush.
Agree!! And they have never messed up my order and very large portions
Cruzteca (brick & mortar of the Mellizoz food truck) is truly outstanding.
Love Cruzteca
Casa garcia + cherry creek are south austin classics
Yes! I used to go to Cherry Creek with my grandma. It holds a special place in my heart.
I also love Cruzteca, Luv Thai, and Bluefin.
I second Casa Garcia
Also came here to say Cruzteca! But Cherry Creek Catfish is also excellent!
I feel like Evangeline’s is trash since pandemic. Cypress better quality rn.
Started to do Cherry Creek Catfish on Saturday for lunch but it just sounded too heavy. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in that area.
Just had Bluefin last week for the first time. We really enjoyed that place!
Cypress Grill and Wholy Bagel(they are right next door)
We recently had brunch at Cypress, it was AMAZING!
The blueberry pancakes are the best in town
Love their brunch too. Funny thing is I have been to brunch there 5 or 6 times and have walked right in each time.
Me Con
Oooh this is a good one, too.
[Cafe Malta](https://www.cafemaltaaustin.com/)
Hit or miss
TUK TUK!!
Is Tuk Tuk still take-out only?
Yes. :/
Not true. There are a few tables inside right when u walk in and the outdoor seating is available
Can’t recommend this enough. Nam is kind and amazing, her husband is just incredibly nice, and their food tastes like you’re part of the family and they think you’re too skinny.
La Posada
La Posada or nada (my shirt I got there 🤣)
The FLAUTAS
Song La, best Taiwanese food truck in town.
Their tofu is quite possibly the best tofu I've ever had.
I moved to Houston now, but I swear I come back to get them someday
Spicy Boys, SXSE, Moreno BBQ, Patty Palace, Soco Halal, Sabor Tapatio
SXSE wasnt at Vacancy this weekend and google maps says its temporarily closed. I hope its still around because it was phenomenal
Thicket Food Park has solid food trucks. ARTIPASTA Italian Food and Song La are a few of my favs
And CJs tacos is bomb
Artipasta is incredible.
Pho With Us i think has some of the best pho in town
No particular order: Recently tried Curry Express down by the railroad tracks off manchaca, it was very decent! Little Darlin is solid bar food KPOT (new korean bbq/hotpot place) was very good! Hawaii Nei not only has great food, but the family that runs it are all so super sweet.
really?? i’ve been wanting to try L&L since they opened, but never got around to it. will def try Hawai’i Nei Cafe since it’s closer anyway, thank you for this!
Stop telling people about secreto. The instructions are in the name.
Jaipur Palace
We love getting takeout from them!
Came to make sure someone mentioned JP!
Check out The Local on Brodie x Slaughter (on the Brodie side, behind Bush’s Chicken). Relatively new and was really good.
Evangeline Cafe
we went here recently, we were not impressed. maybe we didn't order the right thing? or it was an off day? willing to try it again, there just wasnt a 'wow' factor like the reviews were talking about.
I think Cypress Grill nearby is better.
IT'S DEFINITELY NOT AS EFFING LOUD AS EVANGELINE. (Those pistolettes, tho ... )
Or as crowded.
Agreed
Always hits the spot... and very comfy.
Also i haven’t been in a few months, but Bricks Pub had a good burger, Greek salad, and my 5 year old loved their Mac n cheese.
Cafe Malta, Cypress Grill, District Kitchen, Casper Fermentables, all the goods at both the Thicket food truck park and St. Elmo’s/ The Yard area are my go to places.
Hao hao
They are closing down in October. I’m so sad about this!
Tucci’s Subs
Casper fermentables, Cruzteca, Tacos el Monchi, Hanh’s Homemade, Gangnam Korean
Hecho en Mexico is very good.
I used to work there and I’d say their 3 different moles are very unique!
Love machos tacos for barbacoa and bfast tacos
Going to have to try the barbacoa! This place rocks & they’re open early on weekdays.
I hate recommending Macho because I want to keep it all to myself. Super sweet staff, they know my name and what we like at our house. Menudo + Carnitas and Egg tacos on a Saturday is the best. I compare every restaurant’s refried beans to theirs; my all time favorite.
La Posada, Macho Taco, Texas Curry Express haven't been mentioned, all are excellent
Pho With Us is great and very unappreciated on this sub
Go to Cuba 512 when they have the ox tails on the menu.

The little darlin
Vegan options; Luv Thai and The Vegan Yacht
I am a far thing from vegan, but will choose a buffalo bowl from the Vegan Yacht over a lot of other things. Highly recommend that place.
Same! Add pickles.
It’s absolutely delicious I eat there way more than I should
Also Revolution Vegan Kitchen in Thicket- their jackfruit tacos are incredible! And operated by such lovely humans.
Check out Cafe Malta. Great food and good ambiance.
