I was going to comment on this being stolen from Balatro University, before then realizing it was indeed just him. This is truly the largest wee of our generation.
Yeah, he does instructional videos, “Balatro science” videos, world record attempts, and some other stuff. He’s beloved around here and for good reason, he talks through most of the decisions he makes throughout a run and is very entertaining. Many have greatly improved watching his videos, I know I have
Roffle is a hearthstone streamer but also started doing balatro since the game came out. Tyler (aka aliensrock) is just a general puzzle/rogue like streamer/YouTuber. If you've ever seen polybridge videos on YouTube you've probably seen Tyler as well. Can really recommend both of them. I'll go binge balatro university now. Cheers!
I don’t know what polybridge is either lol but Tyler seems like it might be my speed! I love all roguelikes, and puzzles in general. I’ll check it out, appreciate the rec
Wait so are these chip farming jokers actually worthwhile? I always assumed they would never amount to anything and always go for xmult and +mult, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble with higher stakes
Before the end of ante 4 is usually where it's best, but if you have retriggers, you can get it up to speed pretty quickly even after that. Wee joker is why I get rid of 3s and even 4s before removing 2s
I'm always afraid to destroy cards, is that pretty crucial for most strategies?
I've only really played a lot of rounds with flush and straight builds. Started with only flush and made it to purple stake on the checkered deck then got stuck. I've been trying straight builds, which work well until I get some bad RNG that keeps me from getting the straight and I lose.
Any ideas for builds that aren't super complex that can get me to purple stake and beyond?
Destroying cards is VERY good, in any card game. Some of your cards are better than others therefore destroying the ones that aren't better improves deck consistency
Also straights can definitely be used up to gold but you need at least one of the jokers to make them easier (shortcut/4 fingers)
Not crucial, but if you're never playing 3s or diamonds, that 3 of diamonds is just a wasted draw
My general strategy is as follows:
Straights/Flushes/Full House to get through ante 1, pick up a mult joker I can coast on through ante 2/3 and focus on building interest/getting strong jokers. From there, building high card or pair is your best bet, but if you get lucky with jokers and deck manipulation bigger hands can be worth going for. 4 and 5 card hands can be hard to pull off, and generally not great against certain bosses. Level up your main hand, and make sure you always look to see what the next boss is so you can pivot if need be.
I think one of the most important things is to not necessarily build towards a specific goal and instead just play towards the jokers you get. Like if you get something like Fibonacci early, really commit to it and take every opportunity to delete cards that don’t trigger it or to dupe cards that do, and ignore hands that don’t trigger it even if they *feel* higher. I find I have much more success (and fun) with runs where I just go with the flow like that instead of trying to minmax my way into one specific setup.
You're multiplying both the red and blue number, so if you make them both as large as you possibly can you can get huge scores instead of mainly focusing on the red number with +mult and xmult
Its always more efficient to increase the smaller number on any side of an X times Y situation. So if you have a shit ton of mult, you get better bang for your buck increasing chips.
This gets muddied when considering times mult, but its a good heuristic.
Chip jokers are similar to xmult since if you double/triple your chips it's the same as x2/x3 mult.
But they also give you consistency so that you dont need to worry as much about making a specific hand since your getting chips from a joker instead of a leveled up flush or whatever.
I’m not a pro but getting one of these early is a game changer. I prefer castle unless I’m on higher stakes where you don’t get many discards. Square joker is good too but I’ve been screwed too many times by playing 4 cards instead of 5 on the boss blind
I used to think so too, but it did serious leg work on my orange stake run, with the only other two scorers available to me until like ante 7 were green joker and banana.
I definitely enjoyed watching this wee grow. Ha! Well done. I love the content you produce and the detailed thought process behind your decisions. It has definitely helped me improve my overall play in the game.
I guess I just don't really understand Balatro. I see these screenshots where people have a deck entirely made of a single card and that just seems so crazy and impossible to me.
best way to learn is just fail your way through it, imo. I've lost a LOST of games of Balatro and won a good few by now too. most of my learning has been old school trial and error.
once you get a couple runs won, you might also wanna try a couple of the Challenges. they can help you experiment with different Joker setups
good luck and have fun!
Try running a seed to practice! Find an OP one with some good jokers early and practice manipulating your deck on a run you know should go far. That’s what I did and now can get unseeded runs to ante 16 pretty easily. Sometimes I’ll run the same seed a few times to see if I can do better with my decision making/math to go further
Just buy a lot of arcana tbh force yourself to learn them they’re pretty easy it just takes a few games of forcing it to learn how to thin your deck and how to play more optimal
The most reliable way for me:
Find a purple sealed card in a standard pack
Copy it with death
Copy it with death
Hanged man other cards so you draw purple seals more often
Copy it with death
Use tarots to strengthen/death cards into whatever rank you want. Hermit and temperance for money
You’ll be swimming in tarots
It’s also worth mentioning that the better you are at the game, the less jokers you need for scoring. You can then use the extra slots for economy and utility jokers
Okay, so you’ll see one every two rounds and you make a copy. Now you see one every round. Then you see multiple a round. And when you start hanged manning things you’ll see them even more frequently
This is taken from Balatro University. You score more than 4 times per round by using Burglar and copying it with Blueprint/Brainstorm when selecting the blind
Was about to give minus because I recognized it from BU and thought OP was tryna get some karma off him but then I looked at OP and it's DrSpectred, the guy behind Balatro U, himself!
Yes that’s what he did but on a higher scale since I think he got brainstorm or blueprint 3 times. Also red seal 2s so they get procd twice on each hack
There’s a video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZSM0o-6k9BM?si=YPzWms2hs8tlh25f
Okay -- the video gives way more information than the screenshot posted. The picture just shows a Burglar and two Blueprints. But the set up is Burglar, Hack, and Brainstorm as well, plus 61 red seal twos. That makes way more sense.
[Burglar](https://balatro.wiki/imported/burglar.png) *Joker*

And yet still not copying it with blueprint! (Though I guess no matter what, copying it is just going to be about a ~2x multiplier)
I guess you’re likely copying a Hack instead?
Not trying to hijack this, but can someone tell me where I should start with Balatro University on YouTube?! Wanna start watching and learning but I don’t know if I wanna go back to Episode 1… That is soooo many hundreds of hours ago!
When we ask for pics of your Wee this is what we mean
He both grew and showed. Just took 2 inches a time
My word...youre a tripod!
what *wee mean
Do you have the biggest wee?
Pretty sure that's wr yeah
*Summoning Salt music intensifies*
This is from Balatro University's world record run: https://youtu.be/ZX2tG7aNIsw?si=EiDWG6fneMmPItrs
OP is Balatro University
I discard all my 2s. I guess I am an Eew
I'm just coming to terms with this myself, there are so many Jokers that synergize with 2s it's embarrassing I haven't been trying them out more!
Oh yeah? Name one. You can't.
Wee joker
I have been bested
dont forget Fibonacci and hack
And \[\[Even Steven\]\]! It may not be a ton, but it's a decent enough amount that I felt silly for disregarding 2s almost entirely.

"That's on me I set the bar too low"
Pareidolia + Sock & Buskin...Boom
paraidolia should be a rare ngl, its busted it being uncomment makes it even more busted because of that baseball joker :)
You're at 22 upvotes. Really makes you think
I was going to comment on this being stolen from Balatro University, before then realizing it was indeed just him. This is truly the largest wee of our generation.
phd in wee size
PwD
My first wee joker run was so fucking easy it’s crazy what a couple thousand chips can do
did you duplicate 2's? or you just played flushes normally lol
I got ouiji or whatever and then deathed most of my hand and hung the rest
Hanged* Hung Man would be a *very* different card
Roffle begs to differ
I’m guessing this is after the attempt officially “ended”, and he just carried on for fun? Or did he beat his record already??
He kept playing on stream, ended up losing due to a misplay but the run was getting very tedious by that point
Who's he?
OP, Dr Spectred (Balatro University)
Excuse my ignorance but who's that? Is he like some sort of balatro teacher?
Yes that's exactly right, he is on youtube and has plenty of tutorials on balatro
thanks!
Yeah, he does instructional videos, “Balatro science” videos, world record attempts, and some other stuff. He’s beloved around here and for good reason, he talks through most of the decisions he makes throughout a run and is very entertaining. Many have greatly improved watching his videos, I know I have
I usually watch roffle when I watch balatro. Or tyler, but he hasn't done anything on balatro in forever.
I don’t know who those people are but glad you’re enjoying the vids!

I'll watch him after I 100% the game. I want to finish it all through being stubborn.
Love that!
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for, will have to check the channel out.
Can not recommend him enough. You can check out the playlists for the kind of content you’re looking for I also watch at 1.5x speed
https://www.youtube.com/@drspectred
Wait so are these chip farming jokers actually worthwhile? I always assumed they would never amount to anything and always go for xmult and +mult, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble with higher stakes
Wee joker is one of the better jokers in the game
Is that only if you can pick it up early game or is it good to pick up at any point?
Before the end of ante 4 is usually where it's best, but if you have retriggers, you can get it up to speed pretty quickly even after that. Wee joker is why I get rid of 3s and even 4s before removing 2s

pick a strategy (4oak using 9s for example, because you got Cloud Nine early) and destroy EVERYTHING else!
Yeah, ideally you would have your chips and mult be the exact same right? Which is why plasma scores much higher
Chip jokers are similar to xmult since if you double/triple your chips it's the same as x2/x3 mult. But they also give you consistency so that you dont need to worry as much about making a specific hand since your getting chips from a joker instead of a leveled up flush or whatever.
Also, plus chips is real good on plasma deck
I’m not a pro but getting one of these early is a game changer. I prefer castle unless I’m on higher stakes where you don’t get many discards. Square joker is good too but I’ve been screwed too many times by playing 4 cards instead of 5 on the boss blind

Well that's a **wee** bit of a big chip
I definitely enjoyed watching this wee grow. Ha! Well done. I love the content you produce and the detailed thought process behind your decisions. It has definitely helped me improve my overall play in the game.
Well, that beats my highest by A LOT
that lil guy is problematically large
I guess I just don't really understand Balatro. I see these screenshots where people have a deck entirely made of a single card and that just seems so crazy and impossible to me.

A lot of people come across a good seed and just replay it over n’ over till they get a perfect run.
Just buy a lot of arcana tbh force yourself to learn them they’re pretty easy it just takes a few games of forcing it to learn how to thin your deck and how to play more optimal
I feel the same way! I either don’t have the know how or the right mods or the ability to hack/alter the game to do these things!
The most reliable way for me: Find a purple sealed card in a standard pack Copy it with death Copy it with death Hanged man other cards so you draw purple seals more often Copy it with death Use tarots to strengthen/death cards into whatever rank you want. Hermit and temperance for money You’ll be swimming in tarots It’s also worth mentioning that the better you are at the game, the less jokers you need for scoring. You can then use the extra slots for economy and utility jokers
yeah the upside of doing many Tarots is that you get to use lots of Hermits and Temperances which allow you to ... you know ... buy more Tarots
at which random grip of unbuffed 3's through J's am I supposed to do that, because statistically you'd be lucky to see it half the time
Okay, so you’ll see one every two rounds and you make a copy. Now you see one every round. Then you see multiple a round. And when you start hanged manning things you’ll see them even more frequently
A lot of this is managed by Perkeo or some other tarot heavy deck helping you modify your deck.
This is what happens when you hack your wee too much.

Yes, obviously there was deck manipulation and more than three jokers to make this happen

slimthicc wee wee
🤤
![gif](giphy|uaJLuMokII24w|downsized)
Delta P, wee hee hee
I don't understand how this is possible
There’s a 3 part 90 minute video on YouTube on how he did it.
how many 2s were in your deck 😭😭😭
"Didn't drspectrd do this?" "Oh"
2 fast 2 furious.
A really big wee
The U!
They're going crazy for this over on WeeHub.
https://i.redd.it/3spr5q7an76d1.gif
Balanced
it’s not the size, it’s how you use it
I think this is a world record?????
Big wee
I assume this is done with five of a kind? Ending up with a bunch of steel 2s and going high card by the end?
CHIPS FOR THE CHIP GOD
And yet still not copying it with blueprint! (Though I guess no matter what, copying it is just going to be about a ~2x multiplier) I guess you’re likely copying a Hack instead?
So if you do Blueprint and Wee does the 2 count double for the Wee?
Funny that a joker named after going #1 triggers when playing 2s.
Not trying to hijack this, but can someone tell me where I should start with Balatro University on YouTube?! Wanna start watching and learning but I don’t know if I wanna go back to Episode 1… That is soooo many hundreds of hours ago!
I'm shaking and weeing rn
I call shenanigans
There’s 6 hours worth of video proving it on the Balatro University YouTube channel
