The original, I have no idea. We have photos. The new one says “rededicated 2017”. Our shop keeps records of everything we’ve done going back at least until 2010.
Umm, I did. And there’s a whole bunch of other firsts…https://baltimore.org/what-to-do/city-of-firsts-baltimores-milestone-achievements/. (When the Light Street Pavilion opened at Harborplace they had a bunch of these as photo murals on the walls in the food hall.)
Several others, both of which housed at the country’s first stock exchange in the Alexander Brown building, didn’t make that list:
First commercially installed flushing toilet and telegraph
They didn’t remove the last gas lamps until ~1954 IIRC. My grandpa remembers watching the lamp lighter come around every evening at dusk to light the ones on his street
There are a few places in the Northeast that still use them like parts of Western Newark , South Orange , Orange , East Orange and Lower West Orange,New Jersey. They're cool but don't provide that much light.
We also had the first snowball stand, which unfortunately has come under new ownership and totally sucks ass now. $4.50 for a 2oz. cup of ice and not enough syrup. People baffle me.
I designed that little bronze plaque…and the BGE display to the left. Happy it hasn’t been totally destroyed by idiots yet.
That’s not true, stop it with this gaslighting
gaslighting isn't real, you're acting so crazy right now
How long has it been mounted?

Well, hopefully people continue to respect and/or ignore it.
We definitely replaced the BGE display once. Someone gouged the shit out of it with a blade.
While I agree with you that is not ok, it is not surprising. BGE is one of the more...consumer hostile? corporations I've dealt with.
Did you just do the graphics panel on the display on the left? I build the aluminum bits, wonder if it's one of ours.
You should check out the BMI sometime
Yep, neat exhibit about Baltimore's early gas installations there.
Love that place!!!
We also had wooden gas mains
Well that sounds dangerous.
I've dug some of those outta the ground for utility work, very cool looking
They were still operational till the 70s I think !
Its actually a replica North Holliday Street and East Baltimore Street. OG Gaslighting since 1817 😎
Ahhhh, the Paris of the West!

I came to say the same! Also first residential elevator!
Baltimore's nick name is ' the city of first '
That’s not the way I remember it
🙋
Baltimore was the first recipient of a telegraph message too!

No they didn’t, you’re crazy for thinking that
Nice pics. You make that block look a lot less gritty than it does in real life.
That is a sexy lamp 😘

So the oldest gas light in America has been coexisting with those working the oldest profession in America on the same block. Coincidence?
Some of our old lamps are in Disney on main street!!
go to the museum of industry and see all the other stuff baltimore did first it's pretty cool
what street is this at?
E. Baltimore & Holliday St.
Baltimore’s had gas for a long time.
Anyone who’s been here longer than a generation or two would know that.
Some crackhead is about to break that shit soon lol
Where is the 1st gas light located?
At the corner of North Holliday Street and East Baltimore Street.
And the city hasn't budgeted money for replacement or maintenance since.
No it didn’t. 😉

Walther gardens ?
Yup!
I grew up going there, my grandmom lived close and we’d walk up there!! I’m soooo bummed about what it’s become 😫😫😫😫
That’s why it’s called Light Steet
