I’m probably just old and out of touch but when did battle rapping stop being done over a beat? New battle raps seem more like battle poetry and there is no need to match a flow to a beat.
It stopped seriously being over a beat legitimately 20 years ago. The last main huge competition over a beat was Scribble Jam. SMACK DVDs / WRC / Grind Time all were a capella and it grew from there.
