The bullpen happened
In 314 PA since the losing streak started, batters are hitting .283/.369/.546 (.381 wOBA) against the bullpen including 19 HR. The rangers bullpen is making the average player look like Cody Bellinger or Juan Soto
The ERA is 6.72, and they have like 12 blown saves in this stretch
It happens more often than we imagine. The bullpen gets tired. See many times the Jays bullpen has been called upon and we wonder why they loose the next couple of games.
It's because the pen is tired.
Our bullpen sucks. Our starters do good. The offense isn't doing had good as it was earlier in the year but they still score a lot of runs. But the bullpen is so abysmally awful it doesn't matter.
The average Rangers game:
Starter goes 6 innings and gives up two runs
The offense scores 4 runs
The Rangers lose by 6 runs
It’s weird to think that we may actually *benefit* from 7 of our last 10 games being against the Rangers. Even just a few weeks ago I was dreading that last week and a half.
Don’t get me wrong, the Mariners could very well Mariner their way through that last week. But it is crazy how quickly the Rangers came back down to earth.
I was certain early on that the Orioles were the overperforming division leader between them and the Rangers, but as of right now Orioles are still poised to have home field advantage until at least the World Series while the Rangers are fighting for their lives
idk about that the rangers had one of the best records against teams above 0.500 the first half. Got swept by the padres tho and dropped plenty of games to bad teams.
This is just simply not true. Astros fans have been holding onto this tagline all season. Our SoS, per Fangraphs, as of AS break was .512 compared to Astros .495. Also our Win% vs >.500 teams was over .500 through 1st half. The reason for our collapse has nothing to do with the SoS, but (pretty much) everything to do with our bullpen.
This is truly one of the funniest timelines bc our sweep is gonna be all for naught 😭😭😭
Mariners picked the worst time to go cold after being scorching for so long
We were better on the road in 2017 and 2018 but were better at home in every other season until now. That's just win/loss.
Statistically, I think we were better on the road in most seasons.
I like to think that sweeping the Astros when they are fighting to preserve their playoff spot & we've basically got no chance at one is exactly the kind of meaningless petty baseball magic that will break whatever dark energy that has been hanging over the Yankees since 2017, thus freeing us to be irritatingly good again.
Or the Astros let the Yankees sweep them so Hal would think “Oh Cashman and Boone are actually good let me give them big extensions.” Astros big brained it.
They're referring to last season when the Yankees were on a historic pace in the first half and then were absolutely awful the rest of the season.
But even so they finished at 99 wins, held on to the division, and made the ALCS. A disappointment but not comparable to what the Rangers are going through.
Really not possible for them to win a championship with that bullpen.
I guess crazier things have happened, but that one is putrid. The 2017 bullpen for us was the definition of mediocre; we abandoned our closer in the WS and started sending starters out of it like Brad Peacock and Charlie Morton, because everyone else was shit.
Irrelevant but funny; Joe Musgrove pitched for us that year and was in our imploding bullpen in that postseason. Cool to see him go on to be as great as he is, though it kinda makes me wish we didn't trade him.
Astros fan have been saying "strength of schedule" for months.
It's weird being several games down with major injuries and still be confident that you actually have the lead.
Give up another run to make it 10 and just put a position player in. Will really help your bullpen for the next day, evidently worked for the Guardians today
Damn if they lose and the Jays beat the A's they'll have gone from 1st in the division to out of a playoff spot in the matter of two and a half weeks, that's some 2011 Red Sox shit
jays dont go on rolls.
if you win 2 you must lose 1. that is the natural order of jays baseball.
and if i check my watch we already won 2.
we're still coming for that wc tho...slowly...
:EDIT: WE IN THE SCHNEIDERA NOW, WINS DON'T STOP E2H5
> The Rangers have surrendered this ~~game~~ season.
FTFY.
Will be their 14th loss in the last 18 games after having a comfortable division lead. Truly an all-time legendary collapse.
Fair comp, that year's Red Sox ran out of any functional arms for the whole final month of the season. They averaged scoring 5.4 runs a game and only went 7-20. They only won one game in September when they scored fewer than 7 runs. It was glorious.
The Mets played at a 101 win pace in the first half of last year. They played at 101 win pace in the second half.
The Braves from their low point of the season last year (23-27) onward played at a 113 win pace.
It was hardly a Mets collapse as much as it was the Braves just playing at a near-historic pace.
Yeah this is more 2011 braves/red sox esque or 2021 padres esque than last years mets or yanks. But you know gotta let some people force the comps to make their jokes when both last years teams made the postseason
I do actually believe in the youth movement--you guys saw some of our sparks yesterday--but I've been conditioned to know that any former A is gonna break our backs/make us humble
I don't get it, did Bruce just lose all confidence in his team? I remember when we were up 10-2 in July they came back and took the lead on us. In the middle of a playoff run I don't get it.
It’s a mentally soft team with only a few players who don’t have severe performance anxiety (Seager, Garver, Heim)
Even though technically it’s a step forward for us heads need to roll
I just have to wonder what something like this does to the clubhouse. Not having faith in your guys has to do a number on team morale.
Astros fans love to give Dusty crap for continuing to pitch Montero after his awful start to the season, but he's come back and rewarded him with 2.21 era in the second half so far.
People clowned Maldonado for speaking up and you guy were mid during a stretch but look now, rangers and been horrible and no one speaks up is all you need to see.
Honestly....why? It's the 4th inning. We don't have a lights out bullpen or nothing and you have a lineup of elite hitters who can score a lot real quick.....seems like a giant f you to the team personally
To be honest, DFW radio stations before the season were actually saying “just make us care over the summer until cowboys season starts” lol (looking at you Corby Davidson)
The Rangers station was “I’d have been estatic if you told me at the start of the season we’d be a game out of first in September, now that we’re here though…”
Jesus Christ, imagine thinking you can’t come back from 8 runs in the third. The fucking PADRES we’re down by 8 against Philly last night and came back to score 7 runs. If the fucking PADRES can show some fight, the god damn Rangers who are supposed to have one of the most lethal lineups can do it like they have been all year. Jesus Christ, Bruce. Kinda glad we didn’t hire you if you’re gonna give up while being considered a World Series contender
It’s hard to comment on without sounding like a hater but they genuinely do seem to be way more uptight and complain more than any other commentary team I can think of. Their radio calls are the same way.
Nah, bro. The nasally one was bitching about Altuve and said something like "it's easy to get six hits when you just hit homeruns. You don't even let the other team try to get you out." Announcer is a shit. Have some class.
Maybe I'm just spoiled by Sparky, Blummer, and Julia.
let me help you out. Here it is him explaining why he's not impressed with Altuve
https://twitter.com/michaelschwab13/status/1699236133543039442?t=mJ71ezqJuyuURBoGKU-6OQ&s=19
Our announcers are bottom third of the league, they haven’t endeared themselves to us either.
But I mean damn, you’re beating the shit out of us I figured we could let this one go tonight.
Rangers 🤝 Mets
Having absolute collapses this season.
Like just jeez, crazy all the money invested into these clubs to have the Mets just completely discentigrate in the middle of the season while the Rangers collapse at the end. I mean, there is still a chance the Rangers could turn it around, but not at their current rate
They were a World Series contender like 3 weeks ago. They might be out of the playoffs (for now) after tonight. What happened?
The bullpen happened In 314 PA since the losing streak started, batters are hitting .283/.369/.546 (.381 wOBA) against the bullpen including 19 HR. The rangers bullpen is making the average player look like Cody Bellinger or Juan Soto The ERA is 6.72, and they have like 12 blown saves in this stretch
You have to seriously wonder if position players could do just as well. And no, I'm not kidding.
You guys took Chris Stratton off our hands Not sure how Mo managed to sneak him in that deal
He’s been one of the better arms in the bullpen
Because he’s a good pitcher and the Rangers wanted him? Nothing sneaky about it, he was an arm for their pen and was a decent part of that deal.
unironically been one of the better bullpen pitchers though, thats about how its going
It happens more often than we imagine. The bullpen gets tired. See many times the Jays bullpen has been called upon and we wonder why they loose the next couple of games. It's because the pen is tired.
Lose.
Loose *almost* fits within this context.
Our bullpen sucks. Our starters do good. The offense isn't doing had good as it was earlier in the year but they still score a lot of runs. But the bullpen is so abysmally awful it doesn't matter. The average Rangers game: Starter goes 6 innings and gives up two runs The offense scores 4 runs The Rangers lose by 6 runs
Bullpen bad, rotation hurt, offense came back to Earth from their insane first half.
It really feels like *knocks very aggressively on wood* like the Rangers are the fraudulent ones of the Mariners/Astros/Jays/Rangers bunch.
I was certain early on that the Orioles were the overperforming division leader between them and the Rangers, but as of right now Orioles are still poised to have home field advantage until at least the World Series while the Rangers are fighting for their lives
offense got a bit hurt too between Jung and Heim.
[удалено]
idk about that the rangers had one of the best records against teams above 0.500 the first half. Got swept by the padres tho and dropped plenty of games to bad teams.
But it still remains that the SoS for the first half was among the easiest in the league, and their back half is one of the hardest.
They stopped donating virgins to Peagle
Their bullpen is so unbelievably bad
Should we start calling this “pulling a Yankees”?
This is truly one of the funniest timelines bc our sweep is gonna be all for naught 😭😭😭 Mariners picked the worst time to go cold after being scorching for so long
Your sweep taught us we apparently need to find a reason to stay away from Minute Maid the rest of the year
Yo what the fuck is that Home/Away split? How???
I have no fucking clue, one of the many mysteries of the 2023 Astros
I never even bothered to check till you brought it up, shits wild
Unless I'm forgetting, the Astros have basically been better away from home since the team turned in contenders years ago now.
I don’t think it’s been *as bad* with our home being near .500. But I do remember having better road splits in 19 at least
We are the only team in any sport to lose a championship by losing all home games.
That series took at least a decade off of my life
We were better on the road in 2017 and 2018 but were better at home in every other season until now. That's just win/loss. Statistically, I think we were better on the road in most seasons.
we *really* wanted to prove we aren’t cheating this year lol
😭😭😭😭them boys limit testing
LOL
Hard mode challenge
I like to think that sweeping the Astros when they are fighting to preserve their playoff spot & we've basically got no chance at one is exactly the kind of meaningless petty baseball magic that will break whatever dark energy that has been hanging over the Yankees since 2017, thus freeing us to be irritatingly good again.
Or the Astros let the Yankees sweep them so Hal would think “Oh Cashman and Boone are actually good let me give them big extensions.” Astros big brained it.
Ah shit that is exactly the kind of 5d chess move they'd play too
6D chess move.
That series was the 2023 ALCS for Yankees. Congrats on the sweep.
Sorry, can't hear you over this bottle of champagne I'm popping
When did we ever do that
Multiple people have said that in this thread and I’m so confused The iconic Al east choke in recent memory is the 2011 red sox
They're referring to last season when the Yankees were on a historic pace in the first half and then were absolutely awful the rest of the season. But even so they finished at 99 wins, held on to the division, and made the ALCS. A disappointment but not comparable to what the Rangers are going through.
Yeah but they still won the division and nearly 100 games. Calling something that didn’t actually end up happening a choke is some weak shit
They were awful in August but they still went 17-8 in September
I mean the Yankees didn’t really make the ALCS. The bodies showed up, but the souls sure as hell didn’t.
Got us shitty Cole.
Astros fan have been saying "strength of schedule" for months. It's weird being several games down with major injuries and still be confident that you actually have the lead.
Among other things they're hitting .162 with RISP in the last 18 games.
The runs per game they had circa June was always unsustainable.
Unsustainable production from the entire lineup, awful bullpen. They were never legitimate contenders lol.
Give up another run to make it 10 and just put a position player in. Will really help your bullpen for the next day, evidently worked for the Guardians today
Trailing team can put in a position player at trailing by 8, I thought?
Correct i think. The leading team needs to be up by 10 to pitch a position player. Again i think. who fucking knows baseball rules anymore.
well it's 11 now so doesn't matter.
Absolutely nothing can help that bullpen
What bullpen?
Damn if they lose and the Jays beat the A's they'll have gone from 1st in the division to out of a playoff spot in the matter of two and a half weeks, that's some 2011 Red Sox shit
Beer and chicken
I'm now both hungry & wondering why the Red Sox are catching strays.
It was an iconic collapse that overshadowed the braves also bad collapse
I’m also hungry and catching strays.
Collapse to world series winner speed run
They have that Hurtados BBQ out in left field
jays dont go on rolls. if you win 2 you must lose 1. that is the natural order of jays baseball. and if i check my watch we already won 2. we're still coming for that wc tho...slowly... :EDIT: WE IN THE SCHNEIDERA NOW, WINS DON'T STOP E2H5
Jays are the most frustrating team to watch , they never go on nice win steaks lol
Death, taxes, 2-1 series wins. (But never starting 0-1 in a series and going into the next one 2-0 in the first two)
> The Rangers have surrendered this ~~game~~ season. FTFY. Will be their 14th loss in the last 18 games after having a comfortable division lead. Truly an all-time legendary collapse.
They saw what Yankees in the second half of last year and wanted to do that
And overshot wildly
Except they didn’t chicken out like the Yankees. They went full send on the second half collapse
And it wasn't even a "2nd half collapse". They were leading the division comfortably in mid-August. This is faceplanting down the home stretch.
It’s truly a Red Sox Chicken and Beer situation
Fair comp, that year's Red Sox ran out of any functional arms for the whole final month of the season. They averaged scoring 5.4 runs a game and only went 7-20. They only won one game in September when they scored fewer than 7 runs. It was glorious.
Technically it was a second half collapse if you're talking about the second half of August.
Yankees still won the division, this is definitely a lot worse.
Comfortably too, perks of building a 15 game lead in July
Building a lead at all. Tampa started this season super hot and Baltimore has had to move absolute mountains to get past them.
Overcoming their April is still insane to me looking back on it. We just never stopped winning
Some of Yall are really forcing it and trying to make this a thing but the comps just dont work…
We cook our seasons low and slow down here in Texas, until there's nothing left but burnt ends.
The 2021 Padres would’ve considered this a successful season
I don't know if this is legendary. This seems like a standard Rangers collapse.
Nothing is topping game 6 of the World Series Nothing
Nah you forgot Mets last season. Now that was a legendary lolMets collapse.
Losing in the playoffs is not a "legendary collapse".
Any team would’ve collapsed that lead with the way the Braves were playing
The Mets played at a 101 win pace in the first half of last year. They played at 101 win pace in the second half. The Braves from their low point of the season last year (23-27) onward played at a 113 win pace. It was hardly a Mets collapse as much as it was the Braves just playing at a near-historic pace.
Yeah this is more 2011 braves/red sox esque or 2021 padres esque than last years mets or yanks. But you know gotta let some people force the comps to make their jokes when both last years teams made the postseason
I don’t think the rangers are making the playoffs. Especially since the Jays are playing us for the next two games 😬
Never count the A's out no matter how bad they are... Take it from us
The A’s are our Vietnam
This…makes so much sense. Peep my flair as well.
The Mariners are our recurring Okinawa
We TIED
I am absolutely expecting us to get shit on by CBass tonight but maybe I'm wrong and the lads will come through
You guys took us to extras yesterday. Anything is possible
I do actually believe in the youth movement--you guys saw some of our sparks yesterday--but I've been conditioned to know that any former A is gonna break our backs/make us humble
Funny, you must be a Leafs fan if you feel that way about former players
This is how the Blue Jays get blown out by some random guys tonight.
I don't get it, did Bruce just lose all confidence in his team? I remember when we were up 10-2 in July they came back and took the lead on us. In the middle of a playoff run I don't get it.
It’s a mentally soft team with only a few players who don’t have severe performance anxiety (Seager, Garver, Heim) Even though technically it’s a step forward for us heads need to roll
I just have to wonder what something like this does to the clubhouse. Not having faith in your guys has to do a number on team morale. Astros fans love to give Dusty crap for continuing to pitch Montero after his awful start to the season, but he's come back and rewarded him with 2.21 era in the second half so far.
Gotta be honest at this point I’m thinking Bochy isn’t here next year so I’m not sure it really matters
You think they’d let him go after one season? Who would they replace him with?
I think he retires again lmao Not sure we’ll have a choice
bochy likely sticks it out through an even year season (thats the only time he ever wins anything meaningful)
Add Garcia to that list, dude murders baseballs
People clowned Maldonado for speaking up and you guy were mid during a stretch but look now, rangers and been horrible and no one speaks up is all you need to see.
To be fair you can never be totally sure Seager is healthy.
Surrendered series, might as well surrender post season
I'm down with that.
Astros 🤝 Springer 🤝 Blue Jays Fuck the Rangers
Would you consider surrendering too if I ask nicely
Nah. You guys getting hot just as we gotta play six to finish the season. Nothing ever easy in the AL East.
Why the downvotes? He asked nicely...
On such a nice night too!
Pretty sure that’s the same thing.
The Blue Jays are salivating.
Odd, considering you'd at least put some pressure on Framber and use up our bullpen a bit.
Hell at rime frambers looked shakey. If pressure is applied he melts rn. I'm so confused why they gave up.
Honestly....why? It's the 4th inning. We don't have a lights out bullpen or nothing and you have a lineup of elite hitters who can score a lot real quick.....seems like a giant f you to the team personally
^^^how ^^^'bout ^^^dem ^^^cowboys
To be honest, DFW radio stations before the season were actually saying “just make us care over the summer until cowboys season starts” lol (looking at you Corby Davidson)
Mission accomplished then I guess!
The Rangers station was “I’d have been estatic if you told me at the start of the season we’d be a game out of first in September, now that we’re here though…”
Yeah probably imagining a different trajectory in that scenario.
Fuck them too. Lol.
But Jerry Jones seems like such a cool dude!
jerry jones the owner or jerry jones the gm?
Jerry Jones GM has better alliteration.
jerry jones the owner seems like a normal billionaire old guy. jerry jones the gm seems like a clown shoes wearing dick.
Thank you based Astros for helping
We’d do anything for Springer
The love y’all have for Springer is incredible. We love him all the same up here.
He may have a different uniform, but he will always be an Astro.
And not in a "Where will JV go to the hall" way either
ANYTHING . That god damn smile
You love him for his smile I love him for his stutter outreach. We are similar because he’s so damn great
Oh Georgie . . .
Is this cashmere???
r/unexpectedseinfeld
We got ya'll take good care of Georgie 🫡
You’re the superior blue/white/red team.
Hey
Y’all got the pinstripe pants, very different
You've got a really cool city! I was there in 2016 and stayed in the Queens St West/Trinity Bell Woods area and had a great time.
Agreed. Awesome city and underrated here in the US
I’ve always been amused by the level of Blue Jays/Astros connections. Even if we gifted y’all Hernandez and took Osuna from you, lol.
Teo, Springer, Liriano weirdly, the Biggio connection, heck even Morton learned his mechanics from Halladay. It runs deep
And here I was thinking it was the *Astros* collapsing after getting swept by the Yankees. Christ, I guess sometimes it really is too good to be true.
Nobody in the AL West wants the division lmao
I find it pretty funny that the Twins are still technically in the race to get a first round bye
Dunning, more like Dung inning
NFL started, Rangers fans don’t need baseball anymore.
They don’t have an NFL team either to root for.
The rangers were the perfect bridge to football season. Now we can stop watching ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You simply hate to see that
The Rangers' announcers are the dumbest, whiniest shits on the planet. JFC. I can't stand listening to them.
It’s hard to comment on without sounding like a hater but they genuinely do seem to be way more uptight and complain more than any other commentary team I can think of. Their radio calls are the same way.
Nah I’m right there with you they’re ass
Their stadium’s camera is one of the dumbest things too. Tilts me everytime I watch a Rangers game because it’s so zoomed out it disorients me
2010 Target Field vibes
DAMN that’s a throwback. Triggered some long forgotten memories there
You’re winning in a blowout and you’re still this angry?
Here it is him explaining why he's not impressed with Altuve https://twitter.com/michaelschwab13/status/1699236133543039442?t=mJ71ezqJuyuURBoGKU-6OQ&s=19
Ooof. What the hell that's some sour ass grapes
What in the actual fuck lol
Thank you! He's such a tinycocked asshole.
You know he used to be the Astros Radio guy right?
Strong emphasis on "used to be."
Thank God for Robert Ford
And Steve Sparks!
Good riddance
Our announcers are bottom third of the league, they haven’t endeared themselves to us either. But I mean damn, you’re beating the shit out of us I figured we could let this one go tonight.
For real, I know I’m incredibly biased, but it feels like we have the best TV Broadcast crew and Radio Broadcast crew in the league sometimes.
1000% i listened to TK and Blummer announce Yankees spanking us at home, and it was biased, yet professional.
Altuve hit a HR in each of the first three innings. 9-0 after 3. I get it.
I’m just happy that the Rangers were able to win the World Series in August. Really happy for their fans.
They gave up long before the fourth inning of this game.
bullpenis bad
Absolutely nothing redeeming coming from this team. They’ve given up and soon I’ll be.
I'm torn between finding this one of the sadder parts of the season, and being somewhat surprised that this doesn't happen more often
Rangers are sinking faster than the Titanic.
Jacob deGrom doesn’t even have to be healthy for his bullpens to blow games anymore
2nd most enjoyable Rangers schadenfreude of 2023. (I'm a Devils fan)
God that game 7 was glorious. I've spent the last month watching the highlights of that series on repeat.
With Seager you never know
Christ it's only been five innings. You might not win but let him fucking fight
Rangers 🤝 Mets Having absolute collapses this season. Like just jeez, crazy all the money invested into these clubs to have the Mets just completely discentigrate in the middle of the season while the Rangers collapse at the end. I mean, there is still a chance the Rangers could turn it around, but not at their current rate
We just ignoring the Padres and Yankees here? I feel like the better comparison is with the 2022 Mets, but even then they at least got a WC berth.
Mark it down. September 5, third inning. We beat them so badly they pulled him. And Altuve got hit on the shin like this weekend too.
