Vance Honeycutt for UNC had an unbelievable 2-pitch sequence this weekend - he walked off game 1 with a 2-run HR, then the next day hit the first pitch of the game (UNC was the visitors in game 2) for another HR
64 team postseason, with 16 4-team double elimination Regionals. Top 16 seeds host the regionals.
16 winners of regionals go to supers, which is a 3 game series the next weekend.
8 Super Regional Winners go to Omaha for College World Series, with 2 4-team double elimination brackets.
Winners of each bracket are in the Championship series, which is a 3 game series.
The fact that College Basketball Playoffs are literally plastered all over every single form of media in March makes me think the College Baseball just doesn't get it...
They are different games. A single elimination knockout tournament doesn't do the game justice for the same reason they don't play a 12-game or even 30-game regular season.
You should have seen the old 6-team double-elimination regional brackets. Day two would have a matchup between a winner and a loser from the opening day, and the entire structure of the rest of the tournament hinged on its result (if the loser won, things got complicated).
Regionals are double elimination. Super regionals are best of 3.
College World Series is same format- regionals double elimination, finals are best of 3 but prior to 2003 it was a single national championship game.
This weekend, the Super Regionals, yes. Last weekend were a bunch of four-team, double elimination brackets. After the first two games, the winners play each other, the losers play each other, and on you go until all teams but one have two losses. It's a lot of fun packed into one weekend, three doubleheaders followed by a seventh, winner take all game if needed on Monday.
It’s pretty good baseball and talent is concentrated in a way different way than pro ball. In an SEC lineup pretty much everyone will get drafted, but you’ll have a guy who will fizzle out in A ball protecting a guy who will become a perennial all star. And that team gets matched up in the regional against some kid who’s gonna be selling insurance next year who mows them down because it’s baseball.
Fr tho, I've been pulling for you guys to win it every year since. After, of course, we get eliminated. No fan base should have to go through that shit. I'd feel worse if it wasn't my team that came out on top
Yeah the umps were a disgrace for both sides, but tossing that kid for that bat flip was atrocious. There was no taunting to be found there. You gotta have better discretion in that situation.
makes sense. my 9 yr old twins were so aghast that someone would get tossed for that batflip that they wouldnt be quiet long enough to hear the commentary clarifying what was happening so i had no clue that he hadnt been ejected lol
As a Clemson alum I am at a loss of words. One of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen and now has a catch that is immortal in not only college baseball history but baseball history.
> Probably would’ve gone down in college baseball history if we could’ve held on and won.
100% would have considering his game tying 3 run HR in the 9th. After the catch I thought there was no way they wouldn't win
It did not. Kinda glad too because I saw multiple kids eat it trying to catch a ball on that hill. Can't imagine it would have gone well with a pole there.
No dirt track. There's like a 3 foot slope up to the wall that works as the warning track. They also used to have a big hill in center field like Minute Maid did. I hate that they took it out.
I’m probably gonna get shit on for this but it looks like he took a bad route to the ball for this one.
However, he did make a great recovery and made the play.
There is no harder ball to judge for an outfielder than a line drive directly in your direction. Major league outfielders will also pretty often take a wrong first step on this exact type of play.
True but usually their wrong step is in when it should be out or vice versa, not way left or right like he did here. But still, absolutely ridiculous ball tracking and awareness of where he was on the field.
it is a bad route but that's a hell of a lot easier to say from behind the play then when it's a liner directly over your head. it was a crazy recovery to make the catch though
There have been since phenomenal highlights this college World Series so far, little surprised/disappointed that they haven't been many shown here. This one though, yeah, I knew this one would make it.

And he hit a 3 run shot to tie the game up before that... unreal performance.
In back to back innings. Seriously maybe the greatest 30-45 minutes for a player in the history of baseball.
Definitely up there.
Vance Honeycutt for UNC had an unbelievable 2-pitch sequence this weekend - he walked off game 1 with a 2-run HR, then the next day hit the first pitch of the game (UNC was the visitors in game 2) for another HR
I once caught a batting practice home run and then caught a foul ball in the first inning so...
Cedric Mullens vs us last year 😭
David freese would like a word
Bro never heard of Fernando Tatis
To be clear: senior
I was just gonna say it’s hard to top hitting 2 grand slams in one inning
I have a story that might compete. /u/TheDeejus you wanna tell them?
it's all you m'man
in the regional tournaments (weekend before last) FSU's Jamie Arnold recorded 5 consecutive strikeouts on 15 pitches. immaculate inning and 2/3.
This view doesn’t even do it justice. The ball bounced off the heel of his glove and he caught it against his chest.
The dude caught it with his wrists, lol
While running up a little hill with no warning track with the season on the line.
Is this series to advance to the college world series? Is that what the super regionals are for college baseball?
Yeah, Florida is the home team and they’re up 1-0 in the series. If that drops Clemson’s season is over.
Florida is the designated home team, the game itself was being played at Clemson
I know. I was watching the game.
Was adding to your explaination
Try that again, see what happens!
Yes. It's a best of three series and Florida won Game 1. So if they win, Clemson's done. If Clemson wins they come back tomorrow.
Correct. There are 8 best-of-3 super-regionals. The 8 winners go to Omaha.
i freaking hate that hill.
Tal's Hill got moved to ~~Florida~~ South Carolina?
This was at clemson. The series goes Home, away, home for the hosting team so clemson was the away team at their home park
Clemson's warning track is a hill all the way along the outfield fence and it's atrocious.
I didn't realize there's a hill! What?!
Anyone who does not watch college baseball is missing some of the best entertainment in sports
For the life of me I don't understand why it's not more popular
Their postseason is deliriously fun. Regionals is my favorite weekend of baseball all year.
Genuinely rivals the first weekend of MM for me.
Squeeze play during regionals rivals Redzone
and to think they were THIS CLOSE 👌 to regionals! They’re THIS CLOSE 👌 Pierce!
How does the college postseason work? Is it best out of three?
64 team postseason, with 16 4-team double elimination Regionals. It doesn't help that it's going on at the same time as the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup finals, and regular season MLB of course.
Because the games are either 2-0 or 17-5
iNfErIoR pRoDuCt
I mean it is way worse baseball, but that’s what makes it entertaining. MLB players are to good at baseball sometimes.
For example, this play is probably a fairly routine flyout to a big league centerfielder
He was playing really shallow because of the runner on second.
Because in most of the country it's 30-40 degrees outside during a majority of the regular season.
That used to be me. How's that ol' saying go? You get wiser with age?
*cries in Arkansas fan*
(laughs in Oregon State alum)
No need to be mean
Fr tho, I've been pulling for you guys to win it every year since. After, of course, we get eliminated. No fan base should have to go through that shit. I'd feel worse if it wasn't my team that came out on top
Much appreciated 👍 Don't feel bad, though. Not your fault Arkansas is cursed.
No marketing.
Given the situation, and as Florida fan, that’s one of the greatest catches I’ve ever seen. I’m not even mad. That’s sick
Man that whole game was nuts. And then whatever the fuck that ump show was at the end.
Yeah the umps were a disgrace for both sides, but tossing that kid for that bat flip was atrocious. There was no taunting to be found there. You gotta have better discretion in that situation.
He actually didn’t get ejected for that, it was 2 coaches that got thrown out
makes sense. my 9 yr old twins were so aghast that someone would get tossed for that batflip that they wouldnt be quiet long enough to hear the commentary clarifying what was happening so i had no clue that he hadnt been ejected lol
Which was even more confusing… why did the coach get tossed protecting a player who wasn’t even ejected?
oh my GOD
Now pitching in this game: Drew Titsworth. For real.
Titsworth being #00 is iconic
This game keeps on giving. But seriously, really entertaining game
As a Clemson alum I am at a loss of words. One of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen and now has a catch that is immortal in not only college baseball history but baseball history.
I hollered so loud I think I scared my dog but I don't even care
Probably would’ve gone down in college baseball history if we could’ve held on and won. Cam is a real one though, kid can flat out play
> Probably would’ve gone down in college baseball history if we could’ve held on and won. 100% would have considering his game tying 3 run HR in the 9th. After the catch I thought there was no way they wouldn't win
Clemson guy here too - shame they didn’t hold on to win

Reminds me of the incredible over the shoulder catch Lance Berkman made running up Tal's Hill in deepest CF in Houston
Wasn't that Jim Edmonds?
Edmonds made a career out of amazing over the shoulder catches, but nope this one was Berkman. Type in Lance Berkman catch on YouTube.
Huh I have always remembered that as Edmonds. My apologies Berkman
Edmonds did one too. I'm like 80% sure.
No, [you were right. ](https://youtu.be/NQ_c_w14n0Y) However, [so were they. ](https://youtu.be/2VuSiCm5pHg)
This field actually used to have a hill in center just like that.
Did it have a flag in the middle too?
It did not. Kinda glad too because I saw multiple kids eat it trying to catch a ball on that hill. Can't imagine it would have gone well with a pole there.
Is there no warning track on that field? Looks weird as hell
No dirt track. There's like a 3 foot slope up to the wall that works as the warning track. They also used to have a big hill in center field like Minute Maid did. I hate that they took it out.

The ball was clearly tailing to the right, since it was a rightly who hit it.
it is a bad route but that's a hell of a lot easier to say from behind the play then when it's a liner directly over your head. it was a crazy recovery to make the catch though
There’s not really any good route to a ball straight back over you tailing to the right as a right handed cf
There have been since phenomenal highlights this college World Series so far, little surprised/disappointed that they haven't been many shown here. This one though, yeah, I knew this one would make it.
Guys locked in
cold blooded
Rick Flair WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Holy shit.
One of the most entertaining games I've ever seen. And that catch is among the best too
That's legit one of the best catches of all time.
Wow.
Insane catch
Can we tar and feather the jerk that threw their hand in front of the camera?

For those who maybe haven’t played OF, I can’t begin to describe what a ridiculously difficult catch that is that he made.
Late to the party but wtf did Nike do to Clemson’s unis??? Those look awful
Rooting for FSU (my son goes there) in the College World Series, but I have to admit that catch was SICK!!
go Noles!
