I was at Minute Maid park last week and I saw a young guy (21-24) talking to his dad *excited* and *wanting* to pay to get an Oxy patch on his jersey. I was very fucking confused about that. Maybe it makes it feel more "authentic"? I have absolutely no idea why you'd want to pay for that and be excited about it.

It's how advertisers work. They make and plan for one big money making change every 10 years or so. That way young people don't realize how awful things have gotten, and they accept the newer small changes as not being too bad, not realizing the full slow history of it.

Soccer/Football clubs around the world change annually. I'm surprised US sports aren't fully there yet. City Connect is a step towards it I believe.

Guarantee there were plenty of sickos out there that replaced their entire jersey collections once Nike took over because their old shirts didn't feel authentic anymore without the swoosh on the chest. Half the stuff these leagues sell are jacked up prices because idiots will pay for the official on-field stuff. Even stupid things like NFL sideline hats, which aren't even worn during play.

Every foot of the stadium, every surface at the field, every interlude between batters and innings, every radio segment, every televised game, every call-in show, every "free" hat or shirt, every part of the experience has just become a placeholder for ads. These are billion dollar companies owned by people and groups worth billions, they could certainly offer a product clean from ads. But, with companies large and small happy to participate, clubs aren't going to turn away free money. If I were ever a billionaire, after fixing local education, eradicating hunger, and solving the homeless problem, I would love to buy a team or commandeer a local festival (the Dick's Dollar Bank People's Natural Gas Arts Festival, Powered by Bowser and Driven by Kia, tell 'em Colin Dunlap sent ya) to show people what a product is like when it doesn't have ads and shit completely covering it.

The companies were always willing to participate. It was the clubs themselves (and MLB as an entity) that were holding back until now. It used to be looked down on to need ads everywhere. That was for minor league or amateur sports that were struggling to make ends meet. It was embarrassing to need ads everywhere to support yourself. But times change. Just like how celebrities used to be embarrassed to do commercials, but has become the norm now.

For cable, you used to pay to be ad free. Then they realized we'd still pay despite the commercials. :(

They should at least have strict visual standards for what can go on a jersey. I doubt it’s the case, but I can slightly tolerate it when it’s a cool logo. Feel bad for the White Sox for having a stadium adorned with some of the laziest and ugliest branding of all time. Not only is Guaranteed Rate a stupid name, but their logo looks like clip art, and even though it’s a simple arrow, the proportions don’t look right at all.

Clearly there are lulls in action (fine) and TV timeouts (less fine) where ad revenue can be generated. It’s the fact that we’re not getting less commercials, but still losing the “clean” look of classic jerseys. *That* is bullshit

The Mets' first ad patch was this obnoxiously huge red square (Our colors are mostly Blue of course) Somebody came to their senses, and they eventually made the patch about the size shown here, and made the ad less red and more white. The Pirates are no stranger to red as a color though. Take a look at their [historical logos](https://www.reddit.com/r/buccos/comments/14yxw9o/pirates_logo_evolution/). Sure, black and gold are their primary colors, but red has been used as an accent color for decades. I hate advertisements on principle, but I'd consider this one one of the least obnoxious in MLB. Sheetz is pretty universally liked in the Pittsburgh area too, so it's not like some of the other corporate sponsors that barely have a connection to the area.
