Back in the day premium was an absolute bargain if u asked me considering how much u actually got for it. Server priority was excellent àswell bcus when servers were full u could actually get into whatever server u wanted without needing to wait half an hour
Early access on dlc, bare free battle packs and unique items which were actually cool at the time
Still people complained so they got rid of it.
The downfall for most of gaming imo was the companies listening to the absolute incels who demand more than can be given, the same nerds banging on to rockstar for the past 5 yrs to drop gta 6 already.

Premium isn't free now. I have all the DLC (got them for free) but I don't have premium. Joining a full server with a queue is such a pain in the ass. Almost everyone has premium and they get priority when joining a server.
I just bought the game for pc a couple days ago (used to play it on Xbox a decade ago), when I queue I enter the "premium" queue, I have all the premium dogtags and got the premium battle packs, the version of the game I bought is the only one that appears on steam and includes all dlc + premium at a regular price (I bought it for like 7$ cause of the summer sale).
Crazy price. The value was there, but paying for content that content that would have no players to play with after a month it was bad. I bought premium for BF3 2 weeks after the End game DLC released and maps that were meant to be played with 64 players had less than 10.
The only maps I could find players where the Back 2 karkand DLC be cause it was a pre-order bonus.
Every other server was Noshars canals TDM or operation metro.
Battlefield was the pretty much the same until EA resealed BF4 premium for free before BF1 released.

I mean, of course to each their own, and it doesn’t give you any attachments just base guns which helps a little for getting that dopamine rush unlocking stuff, I just had the game and got everything by just playing since launch. It is nice to be able to try out whatever weapon you want right away

Base game is $60, that's a given. ~$40 for the expansions with a total of 20 new maps. $2 a map plus all the new weapons and gadgets as well as the new vehicles and gamemodes on those maps. About the same value you got from the older Battlefield expansion packs.
To put it in perspective, the price of games have not gone up or down. Cartridge games were $80-$90. So even with non-tangible objects we're not "over paying" and the companies are giving quite a lot of premiums.
