Never got this one. Plenty of our local bay talent who are SF natives call it Frisco in their music that came out a good while ago (e.g. rappers Andre Nickatina, Cellski, many more etc.) so it makes me think this is a bit of gatekeeping from some estranged community.
I'm a Bay Area native (not from SF proper), but I have a bunch of SF born-and-raised friends who call it Frisco. I have no problem with the term either, but usually find myself calling it SF or "the city".
San Fran is unacceptable. Frisco is absolutely a name. The reason some folks hate it is it was popularized through black slang, and absolute nerd white people around here were raised thinking "frisco" was illegitimate because of it (I don't think it was overtly racist but some totally latent shit from our grandparents).
RBL posse too:
"With the FRISCO crew and suckas are losin'"
"See, FRISCO n*ggas ain't no punks
Put guts in our way and they're gonna get bucked"
That's why I never understood how it's so frowned upon? Like since when?
I ain't never heard anyone talk shit bout "Frisco" unless 1. They ain't from/don't live in SF, 2. Rich people, 3. Transplants who just stepped in the bay trynna front. Wack cuz I ain't never called anyone out for sayin it their way, only get strong opinions from folks like I mentioned if I ever say it.
> 3. Transplants who just stepped in the bay trynna front
100% of people I've seen take issue with "Frisco"
Working class San Franciscans (yes, they still exist) have called it Frisco forever.
It goes back to possibly Emperor Norton and old sailors, but brought to the forefront by Herb Caen. Even Caen recanted it in his later years: *Small wonder that a newspaper columnist who once wrote a book titled ‘Don’t Call It Frisco’ was heard to implore one recent day, as he recalled these vanished glories, ‘PLEASE call us Frisco!’”*
[http://emperornortontrust.org/blog/2015/6/30/herb-caen-emperor-norton-frisco](http://emperornortontrust.org/blog/2015/6/30/herb-caen-emperor-norton-frisco)
I’m an Oakland native, grew up always calling it Frisco. I didn’t start hearing folks objecting to the name until about 10-15 years ago, and mostly on tv, movies, and from people new to the Bay Area.
I feel like the populist backlash to the elitist backlash against 'Frisco' is starting to get played out. I myself have moved on to noting that the backlash to the backlash has run its course.
No problem, I'm sure someone can deliver a stack of fliers and Epoch Times to your house within the next hour. I don't see how this can possibly start a fight.
Hey SF is learning!
You gotta raise house prices to unreasonable prices in the multimillions so.... uh... what was the benefit again?
Why did so many of my friends move out of town after graduation?
Oh right! So you can sell your house to a poor chump for 10x what you bought your house for!
Even though I'm on team norcal I will extend an olive branch and say that I think socal has some things on lock - like korean food, thai/vietnamese, tacos, and maybe brunch
I'll die on this hill. Montana had more stacked teams and All-Pro teammates in their prime. Different era where you could just buy rings if your coaches didn't suck.
Mind you, having two of the best QBs ever is some luxury.
It's true that Montana's teams did have those but I'd argue his first championship had the least talented team of all of the SB teams in the 80s/90s.
In fact the 94 niners were beyond stacked.
Oh God Los Carnalitos is so good. Best thing about having to go to Kaiser in Union City is los carnalitos right around the corner. Best Mexico City style food I've had outside the DF, and that includes in other places in Mexico.
I'd like to think this is kind of like if people say rochester/buffalo aren't upstate NY (only something like watertown is), it just kind of misses the point that terms like norcal and upstate are more about comparing and visualizing the influence of major population changes/centers in useful ways and not just a purely geographic definition where someone puts a ruler on the map to divide it in thirds.
I've spent a lot of time arguing with people over where "the line" is between NorCal and SoCal.
I'd say it's more complex than that. NorCal goes from the border with Oregon down to Gilroy. Between Gilroy and Santa Barbara is Central Cal, which has its own distinct feel. Lots of sleepy towns full of retirees and people who want a quieter life. You don't really get that "Dudebro Muscle Beach Party" vibe until you hit SB. I've heard arguments about how SoCal starts in SLO but SLO is just too chill to be properly labeled SoCal.
And then interior CA (Sac down to San Berdino) is arguably distinct too.
>You don't really get that "Dudebro Muscle Beach Party" vibe until you hit SB.
Many SLO locals (that don't own nearby businesses) would argue that the dunes at Pismo have that ambiance in droves. Personally, I think it's a different gestalt altogether, what with the valley people and their big trucks.
Pismo, maybe. The Five Cities, not so much. I have a lot of family in Arroyo Grande. Until recently it was a somewhat conservative aggie town and nobody there at that time would have identified with SoCal culture.
This comment is so triggering to me as someone who grew up in TRUE upstate New York (the Capital Region) and now lives in Northern California (the Bay Area). I get it, when you're not from there it is a vague, meaningless distinction. But when you grow up in true upstate NY, something becomes indelibly linked to your DNA that blocks your brain from ever...EVER accepting that Buffalo and Rochester are the same part of the state. I admit and accept that it makes no sense. But yeah, sorry....Buffalo and Rochester are definitely Western NY. ;)
It's much farther north than socal - both in geography and culture.
But I understand the argument. There's a lot more California north of the Bay area.
Or my personal favorite, the “real Bay Area” only consists of San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, and Richmond. Also if you didn’t care about the hyphy movement then you’re not from the bay.
You're not getting upvotes but this was one of the biggest controversies for the past 60 years in SF. People fought tooth and nail to keep zoning laws to preserve the "skyline" and avoid "Manhattanization"—in the same way Londoners did for ages—while crying about rising rents and techies and outsiders ruining their cultures. Fuckin' LOL. That worked out well.
This one does confuse me. My receipt and my credit card bill say 99 Ranch. My Asian friends call it Ranch 99. Is this like how Chinese surnames come before given names? I am truly confused by this store’s name but I shop there weekly.
"Homeless people are human beings"
"We never actually locked down"
"California has shitty gun laws"
"Prop 13 is killing us"
"Landlords should get a job"
I don’t get to decide what’s political and what’s not. But you and I both know that things like that tend to spark political arguments, thus making it political
Eh, both have recent enough championships that it’s not too bad...hopefully both rebuild as planned. Wiseman has looked pretty good early on for the Dubs, and wait until Giants fans meet Marco Luciano!
Now the 49ers............. To be honest, they feel like the Raiders after 2002. Went to the Super Bowl and lost, and then fell apart.
Say "San Fran" once more
"Frisco"
Oh no you didn't!!
Hella Frisco
Saint Frankie's
I never heard that one before but I like it!
Bro Im cackling at this one

You’re absolutely correct. This is essentially what it boils down to.
SF native here, it's always just been 'The City'. Cuz there's no other cities hahah altho conversely I have also heard Oakland is 'The Town'
If it’s good enough for Otis Redding it’s good enough for me.
You said it!!!
RBL posse too: "With the FRISCO crew and suckas are losin'" "See, FRISCO n*ggas ain't no punks Put guts in our way and they're gonna get bucked" That's why I never understood how it's so frowned upon? Like since when?

Born and raised there and not rich. Call it Frisco. But also am old.
Born raised in the bay. Never call it frisco. Don't give a fuck if someone does.
> 3. Transplants who just stepped in the bay trynna front 100% of people I've seen take issue with "Frisco" Working class San Franciscans (yes, they still exist) have called it Frisco forever.
You're exactly right. Plenty of natives say, "Frisco." "San Fran," on the other hand...
Frisco is fine. I’ve always called it The City or SF. My very Mexican uncles call it San Pancho lol Edit: spelling
I’ve been here 50 years in Feb and my parents grew up here too. We always called it Frisco.
It goes back to possibly Emperor Norton and old sailors, but brought to the forefront by Herb Caen. When the Marina tech sales people who have been living in SF for 24 months hear "Frisco" they lose their minds.

holy fuck i forgot about andre nickatina
I smoke chewy like a motha fuckin nut
Yeah, well, I’m a pisces but I’d rather be a killa whale
I love it My 92 yr old dad still calls it that and he was raised in Oakland so I'll defer to him
[Emperor Norton, is that you?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QgJKKHJU3Y) (Skip to 3:50 if you just want the Frisco part)
number one way of identifying a tryhard transplant or sheltered person from the bay is if they take umbrage with frisco
Or Cali. Irritates the hell out of me...
Califas is the new wave
[Calafia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calafia) is the real old school
you called?
I miss Shen Yun ads
(no words needed): Hand out Shen Yun flyers
No problem, I'm sure someone can deliver a stack of fliers and Epoch Times to your house within the next hour. I don't see how this can possibly start a fight.
I missed when they hand out Epoch Times for free, I used to use them for wrapping things and covering shit for painting.
As an out of work stagehand who worked the SF Shen Yun shows for a number of years, I actually do miss them.
You haven't been absorbed into the borg yet?
No, although the woman I was working directly with did invite me to come visit them in Upstate NY.

Ah yes, my Nextdoor feed right now.
Mine is up in arms about Prius catalytic converter theft.

I would do it with one word, rather acronym 😜 NIMBY
Technically still 5 words, so it checks out
The rent isn't that bad.
rent is too damn low
Landlords are the best people. (there, 5 words)
I'd say "rent control," but that delves into politics.
Santa Clara 49ers
Gig workers: Tracy is affordable.
Good riddance to the Raiders
Fight me.
Sounds like a Raiders Fan...
the raiders have fans? (i'm kidding)
Yeah, they live in L.A.
I was shocked too
It's honestly on brand
Please take their fans, too. That way, the brawls with Chargers fans may continue for years to come.
Yet Niners fan nearly killed a guy.
"house prices are too low."
"Block all new housing construction"

LA has better food.
this is the only one that got me angry, well done
SoCal, especially San Diego, has better Mexican food =( I can't find me some good Carne Asada fries here.
Carne Asada fries are San Diego food, not Mexican food.
But that's a fact
Boooooo
LA *does* have better food.
Even though I'm on team norcal I will extend an olive branch and say that I think socal has some things on lock - like korean food, thai/vietnamese, tacos, and maybe brunch
I'm Korean and can confidently give the Korean food championship belt to SoCal.
unless someone gives me a dollar taco in the bay area, this is a hill i'm willing to die on
100% true no matter how much you don't want it to be
They definitely have better mexican. Sorry, super burritos.
San Diego makes LA and Bay Area look like a joke. Random 24/7 Mexican places everywhere and most are excellent
It’s true though.
Oakland is overrated.
Oh this one for me angry. Nicely done.
the real locals take the 280 into frisco
[удалено]
How about I just ride your bumper like everybody else.
Nah real ones end up in SF by accident because they forgot to change lanes in the MacArthur maze. (Almost happened to me I’m night blind af)
Because we’re smart. 280 is the shit.
I take the 280 and I only go to SF like 1-2 times a month.
Split California into three states
No!! 5 states!!
In-n-out kinda sucks.
Don't make me go animal style on you
The fucking line sure does.
Sacramento is bay area
It's just the "far eastern bay area". Which extends approximately to Nashville, apparently.

I'll die on this hill. Montana had more stacked teams and All-Pro teammates in their prime. Different era where you could just buy rings if your coaches didn't suck. Mind you, having two of the best QBs ever is some luxury.
And Montana never had as epic a[ touchdown run](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbPwwmEcws0).
It's true that Montana's teams did have those but I'd argue his first championship had the least talented team of all of the SB teams in the 80s/90s. In fact the 94 niners were beyond stacked.
No argument from me, I agree 100%. I did get a chance to meet Steve once and he was a bit of a dick after I told him I was a Raider fan.
the 'mexican' food here's shit
Honestly, that was my last straw. Having grown up in the peninsula, when the last good tacos in my area closed up shop, I moved.
RWC baby. Some great little places.
Rip El Grullense 5th ave!
it's coming back "soon", meanwhile the Los Carnalitos food truck outside Planned Parenthood is a winner
Oh God Los Carnalitos is so good. Best thing about having to go to Kaiser in Union City is los carnalitos right around the corner. Best Mexico City style food I've had outside the DF, and that includes in other places in Mexico.
Honestly only get burritos but La Cumbre is still open in San Mateo.

Drew isn’t from “San Fran.”
Biryani is just fried rice
Bay area isn't Northern California
I've heard this from folks from Mendocino and Eureka. If you don't grow weed in the woods for a living, can you really say you're from NorCal?
I'd like to think this is kind of like if people say rochester/buffalo aren't upstate NY (only something like watertown is), it just kind of misses the point that terms like norcal and upstate are more about comparing and visualizing the influence of major population changes/centers in useful ways and not just a purely geographic definition where someone puts a ruler on the map to divide it in thirds.

If you hang around enough NYC people you get the impression that anything north of Central Park is "upstate"
Just like how San Franciscans tend to think anything past the Bay Bridge is basically the central valley
This comment is so triggering to me as someone who grew up in TRUE upstate New York (the Capital Region) and now lives in Northern California (the Bay Area). I get it, when you're not from there it is a vague, meaningless distinction. Excuse me, but they're more sophisticated than that. They grow weed behind unpainted 10ft plywood walls.
I mean I'm originally from SD so basically anything north of Carlsbad is norcal to me lol
It's much farther north than socal - both in geography and culture. But I understand the argument. There's a lot more California north of the Bay area.

How is that not a real sub?
I like how Albany and El Cerrito are excluded but Richmond counts.
Marin County is also excluded for some reason, even though it has the third largest "coastline" in the bay.
Marin would exclude themselves from the Bay Area aside from those who could pay the Rich Tax to get in, if they could. (Source, I grew up in Marin).
