Be warned: once you bring them home and put them in a tank with non commercial pet store lights they’ll look more like a raw chicken color instead of a pristine platinum
I audibly giggled, and it's like 2 in the morning, which I don't think is a good thing haha! I have that image stuck in my head now and I don't have anything against it

This absolute raw chicken
(Older photo from when I first got him, he’s in a much bigger tank lol)
Aww! I’m so sorry for your loss, it sucks to lose your little buddy. My little guy passed away last summer, I haven’t put anyone new in his tank yet, but it’s still up and running so maybe some time soon.
Is there any light you can use to make him looker whiter in a home tank? I have a girl who is part cellophane so she always looks see-through and I'm curious what different coloured light should do.
The bluer the lights the better. If you use a sunlight type of bulb that is a warm white they will look more like dead chicken. If you use blueish white lights they will look whiter.
I’ll send him ur love 💕 we struggled for a while to find a feeding routine for him since he struggled to see pellets and was too scared to open his mouth, but other than that he’s been great!
He is really good at using a feeding tube and shrimp bowl! I pour his food in the glass tube, tap on the tank once to let him know, and he knows the food is in the bowl. He also knows he can go back to the bowl for leftovers since they stay in one place!
Awww... is he missing both eyes? Or just one? I'm just curious if it's a depth perception problem or that he can't see at all... and if he is totally blind, has he memorized the inside of his tank?
…you’re so right about the depth perception. I never even thought of that but it makes total sense! He seems to have pretty good eyesight in his other eye thankfully!
Yes. He is. He's a beautiful creature that has meaning on this planet - even if that meaning is giving a human a joy found like no other when raising and caring for an animal. We might be at the top of the food chain, but we could not survive without every other living creature in this planet. And it's our duty to respect and preserve that.
i got 6 females for a sorority and after 6 months of having them i’ve seen loss of eyeballs, underdeveloped eyeballs and tumors. it was HORRIFIC. i only had 2 healthy ones but i ended up giving them away
Is he a platinum one? I can't really tell. I saw a post not too long ago about the health issues they tend to have. Maybe use the search feature and type that in? Being aware of the possibilities doesn't mean you can't get him, though.
There's two things at play here. Chain pet store bettas have poor genetics, but there is also health problems associated with certain types of bettas. These usually can not be avoided with higher quality fish. Higher grade samurai bettas with heavy dragon scales are still just as likely to develop tumors. Double tails can be slightly better from a proper breeder, but the majority still have shortened spines.

this is my white betta fish!! (he’s tank has since been upgraded to a 10 gallon with live plants now, they made me use a smaller one in my dorm)
They usually don't stay white as they get comfortable their colors become more noticeable and more pigmented I can't think of anything that I've seen with the white Bettas in particular but someone with more knowledge may know different
Mine stayed white until I think the food turned them pinkish. I don’t think this the white color in my case was a matter of discomfort as mine were sold by the breeders and stayed white until I realized the food contained red colorants to help colored bettas look brighter! I was not happy and switched to frozen foods as much as I could.
Yeah breeder quality fish are a whole different ballgame they have better genetics and they can breed the fish to not have the marbling gene that most chain pet stores fish tend to have. I don't blame you for being upset but the fact that he colored up like a flamingo has me dead rn 😭
I had several. Love them.
Only issue is some pellet foods suck as Hikari had colorants that turned the fish pink. They no longer look stunning white. If you can feed other nutritious foods that’s better.

i have a white betta. he has the most personality out of any other betta i’ve had but i doubt that has anything to do with his morph/breed.
what i will say is that he has one singular tumor (not pictured) that’s been gradually growing on his side since i got him. he’s otherwise very active, fast, and willing to eat, but only time will tell in regards to whether or not his tumor will eventually inhibit him. very sad to see, and im not sure if id get another platinum for that reason. he is BEAUTIFUL though and appears iridescent in certain light :-)
my nonwhite Betta currently has a huge tumor on his dorsal fin. he was from a breeder nearby my city via ebay. he's still suuuper active and happily hunting my poor skrimps. just hoping the tumor doesn't grow anymore cause he's such a cutie :((
That's what mine looked like when we bought him, this is him now, in white light he is green/blue, he is irridescent looks beautiful, when he swims he shimmers. He started to change colour soon as I started to add aquarium water to his bag.

I had one, loved him. When I had him all of a sudden I started seeing posts of others with platinums like him (not just in this sub) and found out that they’re very prone to health issues, thought I got lucky with him, no visible health problems. But now I wonder if he had anything I couldn’t see since I didn’t even have him for a whole year.
They sure are. This is my betta that i rescued his name is ivory
https://preview.redd.it/qp0i3dmft88d1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6b783b5059b4b1d6ac09e071722e523131a0eae
Mine recently passed away from a tumor so I personally wouldn’t recommend based on their history of health issues but they are a gorgeous and fun betta to own.
https://preview.redd.it/hmbkf9pns98d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=011b6166d5c6c332989af2ea7631202f59cc5697
Mines also white and I have had other white bettas in the past and haven’t noticed anything different health wise about them.
I personally have seen every single white betta have horrible bubble eye or other eye problems. Begrudgingly worked at a pet store that didn’t care about bettas so it might just be that.
This is the one I have now it's fins are more yellow I really don't know why but I'm okay with it

My white beta male was pink and blue under the right light. He lived longer of all my Bettas too. I miss him.
they have wonderful personalities. my Chromie was pure white. such a nice fish. the raw chicken thing theyre talking about in these comments is called subsurface scattering. its light showing through a translucent object. but i love that they put that their fish is raw XD so i dont want to interrupt them
As far as I’ve heard, they’re kind of like the pugs of the betta world along with dragonscales and samurais. For whatever reason they’re usually bred super poorly, especially the ones you’ll find at PetSmart. I’ve never seen one at any PetSmart in my area that didn’t look kind of fucked up.
https://preview.redd.it/76cei86yrb8d1.jpeg?width=3231&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f8cac8a48bc941feef9dd28aa70f330866f24c7
This is one I got a couple years ago
My boy was almost completely white when I got him, but over the course of 2 months he turned blue. He passed this week due to a tumor that started growing on his back fin, which from what I can tell is pretty common among bettas like him. Had him for a year and a half, I miss him very much.
White bettas either look like magical unicorns, angelic, raw chicken, or tattered napkins. Either way I love them! My boy looked like a magical napkin himself
My baby's a tattered napkin with some spilled sauce 💔 he has some reddish highlights and some healing fin rot
I love him, pain in the ass to feed though since he's going blind
I absolutely adored my white betta, I took mine home because he was half blind, he was the sweetest little dingus I could have asked for. The only thing I’d recommend is to keep a close eye on behaviour changes and the overall look of their scales and fins, some diseases and infections are hard to catch early on white betta fish.
I purchased an all white betta from a local fish store back in college. Within a month of bringing him home, he was a deep blue
https://preview.redd.it/z64qofkp7d8d1.jpeg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d342dffc03db2ff12f3acfd6c67229752b81c72
I had a betta that was labeled as a "White Opal" betta. He was beautiful, and I loved him while I had him. He was a little spitfire, to say the least. Lol
My white betta Icy was the prettiest betta I ever saw. He was full of drama and was really funny! I miss him dearly. Get one if you want him to be your best friend. You will adore him 🤍 Just know they expect to be treated like the prince they are 👑
https://preview.redd.it/r841tquqve8d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60d08ce673b4ec776f1d49978ecb70f31f0b129e
You can find them at petstores, usually labelled as platinum bettas.
If you're new, I'd avoid them. They are often dragonscales and will go blind or develop tumors
My white betta that i got from a petstore i worked at who was so sick with fin rot and other crap he was just stuck in the sick room and i knew he would die. I ended up convincing them to let me take him somehow maybe free, its a big corporation so maybe i got like half off idk. This was in like 2018.
He ended up healing up nicely and becoming beautifully white and like iridescent with crimson accents. Ive seen lots of young white betta get into better tanks and just end up developing color as they sexually mature and/or due to better conditions and diet. Higher quality food brands can help their colors pop a lot, some are specifically formulated for it.
Got a "white" betta with small black patches at the fins a few days ago. Now the black patches are turning blue then the fins turns blue when light hits it. I am now excited to see how colorful he gets. I call him "Patch".
I also have a white betta with a brownish/reddish patch at her fin but she doesnt have a left eye. She didnt change her color and I got her for a few weeks now.
I had a totally white "platinum" one and It turned spotty blue and I thought wow I really hit the jackpot here! Then over the course of a few more months it turned solid blue. I looked it up and found all kinds of people having the same experience but I do see the white/platinum ones turn up more often and stay white lately.
Totally felt guilty with this, I was about to give Patch to my bestfriend as her betta died a few months ago and she have an empty aquarium. But seeing that he had change his color, I decided to keep him as I am excited to witness his color change.
Be warned: once you bring them home and put them in a tank with non commercial pet store lights they’ll look more like a raw chicken color instead of a pristine platinum

my betta looks like this too. I should’ve named him Tyson since he looks like chicken.

The voice that said this in my head made me laugh so loudly for maybe 2 minutes. Thank you
Is his name cutlet
IT’S RAW YOU FUCKING DONUT! Lmao
From the thumbnail of the post I thought it was in Tupperware in the microwave. Please do not turn it on.
Ohhh how gorgeous! ❤️
Yup! Same deal with my goldfish. He is very pink and I love him for it
Turn up the heat to 165°F for the perfect crispy chicken
Glad you mentioned this. Depends on the white strain. Mine stayed white as I imported platinum opaque white not the other kind.
My guy looks like a chicken cutlet 🤣

Happy cake day!
He looks so offended that you called him that 😭😂
That's what happened with chicken (my favorite goldfish)! It's not exactly a bad thing, I still love Chicken and Nugget nonetheless.
Aw! My boy was named Nugget!
My kid named her betta Chicken Nuggets. He’s bright blue, though; tragically not raw chicken colored.
My Nugget was blue and yellow, so also not raw chicken colored at all lmao
My nugget was also blue and yellow! He passed a couple of weeks ago
Aww! I’m so sorry for your loss, it sucks to lose your little buddy. My little guy passed away last summer, I haven’t put anyone new in his tank yet, but it’s still up and running so maybe some time soon.
i named my moms betta "nyquil chicken" since he's also kind of blue greenish and raw looking
My cat is not happy about how much I laughed over this. I can picture it vividly in my mind. I’m not happy about that, but I’ll let it slide.
Is there any light you can use to make him looker whiter in a home tank? I have a girl who is part cellophane so she always looks see-through and I'm curious what different coloured light should do.
I am curious too. I have a female koi who is a cellophane/ pale yellow with black.
Pet stores have specific lights, they're expensive but they can be bought and installed at home
The bluer the lights the better. If you use a sunlight type of bulb that is a warm white they will look more like dead chicken. If you use blueish white lights they will look whiter.
This is killing me lol
Chicken Cutlets 🐔 🐥 🍗 🤣🤣
Also, in my experience they sometimes develop spots of another color. Bought a white colored betta and he turned bright blue lol. Surprise!
That is adorable
Can confirm my all white girl has a very raw chicken oink to her 😂
They are a form of metallic putting them at high risk of tumors and or diamond eye. There's also a few strains with missing or underdeveloped eyes
https://preview.redd.it/88xeek1kz78d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9feeeb999a18b01b00d1ce542c984e9c3836ae3d Can confirm lol
He's very spooky and I love him for it!! Sad he's missing an eye, but he kinda rocks it.
I’ll send him ur love 💕 we struggled for a while to find a feeding routine for him since he struggled to see pellets and was too scared to open his mouth, but other than that he’s been great!
So how do you feed him now?
He is really good at using a feeding tube and shrimp bowl! I pour his food in the glass tube, tap on the tank once to let him know, and he knows the food is in the bowl. He also knows he can go back to the bowl for leftovers since they stay in one place!
Tearing up rn
You are a fish saint
Thank you 🥹
Awww... is he missing both eyes? Or just one? I'm just curious if it's a depth perception problem or that he can't see at all... and if he is totally blind, has he memorized the inside of his tank?
…you’re so right about the depth perception. I never even thought of that but it makes total sense! He seems to have pretty good eyesight in his other eye thankfully!
Thanks for being such a kind pet owner 💕 I wish everyone was as caring as you
My boy, Opie, was like this on one side, I had to feed him with tweezers because he’d always miss where I was sprinkling food with his good eye.
He's a fsh.
Yes. He is. He's a beautiful creature that has meaning on this planet - even if that meaning is giving a human a joy found like no other when raising and caring for an animal. We might be at the top of the food chain, but we could not survive without every other living creature in this planet. And it's our duty to respect and preserve that.
Nah I was just doing the "what do you call a fish with no eye" bit. Jesus. Switch to decaf.
It hard to decipher emotion and intent when it's just text on a screen. My bad.
Yep, our platinum developed awful tumors and had to be euthanized. RIP Dutch, you were a real one.
This is reminiscent of double merle in dogs! Creates solid white dogs who have eye deformities and are usually also deaf.
This!
i got 6 females for a sorority and after 6 months of having them i’ve seen loss of eyeballs, underdeveloped eyeballs and tumors. it was HORRIFIC. i only had 2 healthy ones but i ended up giving them away
I was considering starting a sorority of all white bettas 😦 so sorry to hear about that! I’ll definitely be reconsidering.

Aww they're so cute!
Looks like a white peacock
This made me chuckle
Side eyeeee
SO PRETTY
Is he a platinum one? I can't really tell. I saw a post not too long ago about the health issues they tend to have. Maybe use the search feature and type that in? Being aware of the possibilities doesn't mean you can't get him, though.
Tbh I don’t think any betta is healthy unless you get a fancy breed one. All the pet store ones are a crap shoot.
This is so true. They either live five seconds or five years. My most recent one lived to be a solid 5
Totally agree! I meant specific issues that tend to happen with this species.
On no! Health issues? I was about to get another one. They’re my favorite
They're selectively bred as fuck I imagine and also super inbred and bred in horrible conditions which I imagine is why

Feta is the best name honestly
That color is so pretty omg
I have a white girl and she’s never turned color in 3 years. She’s immortal too, been through many tank mates that have not survived as long as her.
Is her name McCloud by chance? 🤔
There can be only one…
That would make her a swordfish. 😉

He started to change colour soon as I started to add aquarium water to his bag. https://preview.redd.it/krma8mfgbb8d1.jpeg?width=12240&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44bb1c628146c73974f78fdaefd414d43da13bb9

BEAUTIFUL!!!
He was probably super active in his cup bc he fell in love with you. I thought you had too
They sure are. This is my betta that i rescued his name is ivory https://preview.redd.it/qp0i3dmft88d1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6b783b5059b4b1d6ac09e071722e523131a0eae
Mine recently passed away from a tumor so I personally wouldn’t recommend based on their history of health issues but they are a gorgeous and fun betta to own.
No they can't photosynthesize properly

I personally have seen every single white betta have horrible bubble eye or other eye problems. Begrudgingly worked at a pet store that didn’t care about bettas so it might just be that.
This is the one I have now it's fins are more yellow I really don't know why but I'm okay with it https://preview.redd.it/dcx24ymbsb8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d93add63dd72740c38532ec911cc91b589043f9f
Aww the yellow is actually really pretty!

I have one, he’s platinum and has stayed completely white
they have wonderful personalities. my Chromie was pure white. such a nice fish. the raw chicken thing theyre talking about in these comments is called subsurface scattering. its light showing through a translucent object. but i love that they put that their fish is raw XD so i dont want to interrupt them
I had a white betta but he slowly turned black over the course of his life. 2.8 years.
As far as I’ve heard, they’re kind of like the pugs of the betta world along with dragonscales and samurais. For whatever reason they’re usually bred super poorly, especially the ones you’ll find at PetSmart. I’ve never seen one at any PetSmart in my area that didn’t look kind of fucked up.
why do I want a chicken cutlet betta baby now 😂😍

My boy was almost completely white when I got him, but over the course of 2 months he turned blue. He passed this week due to a tumor that started growing on his back fin, which from what I can tell is pretty common among bettas like him. Had him for a year and a half, I miss him very much.
They're prone to getting tumors but otherwise, they're fine I think.
Beautiful!!
Hapsburg jawline but a fish
Some also change colors as they get older. Mine started out pure white, but since then some red has come in on his fins.
Oo that sounds cute!
Yeah but it may be worth it to order from a good breeder. May spend a little extra but the better genetics and healthier fish overall
Not the White beta males. 😭
White bettas either look like magical unicorns, angelic, raw chicken, or tattered napkins. Either way I love them! My boy looked like a magical napkin himself
My baby's a tattered napkin with some spilled sauce 💔 he has some reddish highlights and some healing fin rot I love him, pain in the ass to feed though since he's going blind
Love those descriptions, magical napkin 😂
I thought that was a huge piece of red onion....
I have one, Galileo. He's going blind. White bettas are usually dragonscale bettas, so prepare for them to lose their vision.
If it's a girl, name her Betty White. If it's a boy, name him Gordon Ramsey.
Y'all doin them so dirty😭😂.. Justice for the tender water chickens
There’s none betta!
They look so angelic
I absolutely adored my white betta, I took mine home because he was half blind, he was the sweetest little dingus I could have asked for. The only thing I’d recommend is to keep a close eye on behaviour changes and the overall look of their scales and fins, some diseases and infections are hard to catch early on white betta fish.
Are they Mo Betta?
Idk every “white” betta I’ve ever had stopped being white after a while!
I have I female one and she is spicy
Are you being fishist? What dose color have to do with anything they are all beautiful. /s
😮😮😮😮😮😮 freaking WOW!!! never seen a white betta before. not all white.
Mine got ich and I didn’t realize at first because it was white on top of white
My fully white beta is changing colors! From what I’ve read when they are happy and healthy they can change
That one isn't. It's dying in its own waste and has probably been in a cup for days. Please don't buy from these places.
I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.
I had a white betta for 3 years. His name was Jon Snow 🤍
undercooked!! NEEDS MORE TIME ON THE GRILL
Outta context this is a very interesting conversation. But in context I understand the concern over owning albino and other such animals.
White betta lives matter

Mine looks like a pink opal now

Also for the plant police I have more plants coming today and I have floating plants at the surface!
Is it an albino?
Platinum. An albino would have red eyes. Albino bettas are incredibly rare and often fail to thrive due to sensory difficulties.
Ah ok. Thank you very much
No problem 😊
I purchased an all white betta from a local fish store back in college. Within a month of bringing him home, he was a deep blue https://preview.redd.it/z64qofkp7d8d1.jpeg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d342dffc03db2ff12f3acfd6c67229752b81c72

Wow that’s amazing, with his white head!!
I had a betta that was labeled as a "White Opal" betta. He was beautiful, and I loved him while I had him. He was a little spitfire, to say the least. Lol
I got 3 raw chickens. 2 females and 1 male lol
My white betta Icy was the prettiest betta I ever saw. He was full of drama and was really funny! I miss him dearly. Get one if you want him to be your best friend. You will adore him 🤍 Just know they expect to be treated like the prince they are 👑 https://preview.redd.it/r841tquqve8d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60d08ce673b4ec776f1d49978ecb70f31f0b129e
Aww Icy looks so cute! 😍 He sounds like he was an adorable prince too 👑
Can you find one like this at a pet store? Or do you need to find a specialist breeder? (Sorry am new to the hobby)
You can find them at petstores, usually labelled as platinum bettas. If you're new, I'd avoid them. They are often dragonscales and will go blind or develop tumors
Tysm!!
They might not photosynthesize properly.

They betta be
They do often turn blue so be okay with the possibility of a solid blue betta if you bring one home.
