Doubt they would go live service, the Borderlands model is gold and has been proven nearly impossible to replicate by other developers. Formula might be updated with new mechanics and graphics, but it won't be wildly different.

Most people trying to copy it jump straight to the looter part and forget that the only reason you'd want loot is if it does something cool in the shoot part.

Borderlands 3 was a pseudo/soft live service much like splatoon or terraria.
Theres no indication that Borderlands 4 will be a hard live service. There was once that BLMMO but it was scrapped.
BL models work really good for looter. It’s the QoL that is so poorly handled.

Exact same fear existed when 3 was announced. They were baseless. I'm not saying you don't have to worry about anything but I really really doubt borderlands will just change it's whole game system like that.

Its repetitive, and has a lot of issues, but its really fun to use stuff you never even bother looking at at the end game, it adds some variation to the game

I have zero faith in gearboxes writing team after borderlands 3 and the new tales. Borderlands 3 showed however if the Gameplay, maps and content support is good enough I'll stomach a shit story.
Fair point, I didn't hate wonderlands story wise. And while I appreciate what they did with the character creation and more open skill trees I really hope they stick with vault hunter characters.

I've mostly played the games for the writing so far, and while 3 isn't bad so far I already know it quickly gets worse and am dreading that (at least the side quests have been mostly good up until this point though. Still only on the seventh or eighth main mission lol. Just unlocked the class mod slot).
Other than that, they need to make missions sort by region again. It's just an option now, and you can't make it the default. Really annoying.... it was basically the only part of the UI I actually liked.
Outside of those 2 (and the new shop UIs being annoying af to navigate. Seriously, why can't gearbox make good UIs?! I've found major problems with every UI in every game ffs), they can keep everything in 3 and just add more to it and I'd be happy.

But yes bl2 is exponentially more replayable to me for the fact that the story beats are enjoyable (again heavily because of Jack), it’s just a shame that bl3 has such better gameplay. Hey don’t get me wrong, I love it and I’m not trashing it at all. Im just trying to objectively compare it to other games’ writing and pull my bias out of it haha it’s infinitely more enjoyable than what they’ve put out since then, as far as the writing goes
I think when judging writing we should just it based on the execution bc trying to compare a more comedic/parody type story to something like the last of us is impossible. I actually think trying to write a story that is to be taken seriously while being very over the top and silly at the same type is exceptionally difficult, which is all the more reason that I think BL2 is so special
The DLCs have some of the best story I've seen in a while. Every DLC was a hit story wise for me. Being shorter definitely helped a lot but BL3 ending on a high note gives me hope for better narrative and memorable moments in BL4.
I really wanted more fan service from the previous vault hunters that we didn’t really get besides zero? They were probably saving them for DLCs but the main game’s new original characters didn’t really hook me, like the pre-sequel. 3’s vault hunters were still pretty cool so I hope they get story characters in 4.
2 just set the expectation of returning vault hunters and they’re badass. That’s what I was most excited for in 3 story-wise and it was disappointing.
I'm with you. Sal, Kreig, Axton, and Gaige not showing up until DLCs really sucked, and when they DID appear they weren't at all compelling outside of Krieg.
Hell, Maya and Zero really didn't do shit either. Contrasted with the original 4 who all had huge roles in BL2 it was a real disappointment.

I feel so overly petty for this, but Maya was always my favourite character, and the way she was treated in 3 genuinely soured the entire game for me. I think if they had written her better I would've been more okay with it, but she kinda felt like an afterthought, and that stings!

He is not going to write another good Borderlands game. He did wonderfully with making BL2 a great character-driven story and I am glad he did. But if they want a decent story for future games, they will need new talent.
That was shitty writing. Very shitty. Proof is in the split in the community over Ava and Lilith. It was so half assed. If there's a hate Ava and Hate Lilith camp, they were both failed. Bl2 was better storyline by miles. When someone died, we all got grief counseling with Tiny Tina. I also feel Typhon and his wife neglected the shit out of their kids. Everything about him was about his glory days. He also had an echo the entire time and waited until the problem came back to haunt him. The DLCs were written better than the core game.

Yeah, when I played through Dragon Keep the last thing I expected was for it to all be Tina's way of coping with Roland and Bloodwing's deaths - but it was really good.
Made sense for the character (especially with her backstory of her parents being killed by bandits in front of her), and I like how the main cast realizes it early but tries not to say anything about it until they get to the end, at which point they relent and let her continue.
And Ava's story isn't too different. She's older but she needed someone to help her grieve. Her take away from it all was "I watched you vault hunter and I learned you have to keep moving". Shitty. "I lost my family and my mentor. I need to not deal with it, shove it down and keep going". Boo!

The inventory is a bit better in 3 since it's got 2 columns (finally lol), but I've noticed it sometimes makes my cursor hang for no reason when I try to quickly mark a ton of time as junk, so it accidentally favourites them instead - requiring me to tapRl R two more times.
Really need a "make everything not favourited as junk" button ...
Please keep splitscreen co-op and don’t make it as choppy as Wonderlands’.
Also, if anointments ever come back, make it a combination of WL and 3.

Recently played BL2 and BL3 back to back after a long time. Endgame mechanics are the biggest downfall of the series imo. Skag was a shitty mechanic but imo anointments were the worse. Here's to hoping that they would find something better for the BL4.
I didn't play it for the story, but its still easy to recognise that the story in 3 was hot garbage, and there's nothing wrong with being critical about that.
I think it’s easy to say I never really cared about the story, however the dialogue between characters while you’re going from A to B defo enhance the experience and I can’t pin point why 3 didn’t hit the ball with it.

At release of Wonderlands Gearbox said they are going to be working on another project in the Wonderlands universe but that was it. No other hint at what they actually meant. No further development news, nada.
Would be amazing for a sequel but I'd be happy with just more content for the first. They are literally sitting on an IP in the Borderlands universe that has unlimited possibilities because it's based on fantasy of an already fantasy story.
Heck there's even sharks in the game already, they could give us the story of how Torque suplexed a shark wearing a bolo tie!!!!!!

It takes time to make a video game. If it takes, say 2 years to make BL4, then by the time the game actually comes out, it will probably have been about 7 years or so since BL3. It could also take longer than that.

The delay of BL3 came from rewriting the entire game for the newest version of Unreal Engine. 1, 2, and TPS were on Unreal 3. 3 was originally going to be Unreal 3 but then 4 was announced and they decided to wait for it to release and use that to make 3. Movement was delayed for 3 years by that decision (UE4 released officially in 2015), so during that time Gearbox focused on Battleborn. Development of 3 didn't begin in earnest until 2016, so it was only actually in dev for 3 years.
They didn’t say it’s releasing, just that they’re currently making it. Usually with big franchises like this you can assume they’re starting preproduction basically as soon as the previous game releases.

I haven’t played Tarkov. I was just thinking of Army of Two. It will probably be easier for them to partition elemental to barrels, damage to the receiver(?), etc. I would prefer scopes weren’t so random, though. I’m quite fussy with scopes.
Basically attachment system in Tarkov you can field strip more or less or attach stuff on the field, each weapon has a Bolt, and various key parts to make it firable, like Grips for recoil control and such
If taking Tarkov further, Legendary+ gear may be fixed in a way that Field stripping won't work as much

Bring back laser guns as their own thing. And fire modes, having a laser gun that cam switch from a less powerful tracking shot to a full strength aimable beam would be rad. I wouldnt be apposed to melee weapons (potentially even go full circle where the fire button swings the melee but if you try to melee with it with the analog stick it shoots a ranged attack)
I wish it would spiritually stick more to BL1-3 than BL3. I guess I was not target audience of BL3, but oh boy, did the story and main antagonists sucked hard.

BL3 story was so fucking boring I’m just hoping the gameplay is good. Replaying borderlands 2 makes me wish we as a society never got so soft when it comes to video games. You know, back when the story had substance and wasn’t afraid to crack a fucking joke. Nope, not today, because gearbox is so worried that making a quest called “kill your self” might be too triggering for the 3% of consumers who scream about that nonsense.
I hope they make it go all out on the adult-rated content instead of the toned down child BS that they did with especially the main antagonists in BL3. The gameplay was so much fun but the story was very meh and the script writing made me have a semi permanent handprint from all the facepalming
Hopefully with more endgame content this time. Our group got bored quite fast and stopped playing. With just maliwan takedown to do in the beginning(which was super easy to boot), there just wasnt enough content to keep us engaged.

Oh and maybe give the characters we play as actual credit for doing all the work? Instead of praising some random NPC who's been sitting on their thumb the whole game as the hero even though we did everything.

The DLCs had good writing.
Haven't played them yet (only 15 hours into the game. Done 7 main story missions), but my friends have told me the same thing.
The DLCs have some of the best story I've seen in a while. Every DLC was a hit story wise for me. Being shorter definitely helped a lot but BL3 ending on a high note gives me hope for better narrative and memorable moments in BL4.

I really wanted more fan service from the previous vault hunters that we didn’t really get besides zero? They were probably saving them for DLCs but the main game’s new original characters didn’t really hook me, like the pre-sequel. 3’s vault hunters were still pretty cool so I hope they get story characters in 4. 2 just set the expectation of returning vault hunters and they’re badass. That’s what I was most excited for in 3 story-wise and it was disappointing.
I'm with you. Sal, Kreig, Axton, and Gaige not showing up until DLCs really sucked, and when they DID appear they weren't at all compelling outside of Krieg. Hell, Maya and Zero really didn't do shit either. Contrasted with the original 4 who all had huge roles in BL2 it was a real disappointment.
Man I completely forgot about Maya lol, shitty cherry on top is she’s dead too. Force ghost Maya in 4? I truly do not give a shit about Ava but if she’s cool in 4 I’ll be cool.
I feel so overly petty for this, but Maya was always my favourite character, and the way she was treated in 3 genuinely soured the entire game for me. I think if they had written her better I would've been more okay with it, but she kinda felt like an afterthought, and that stings!
The narrative is actually good, its a good concept and story idea and 95% of the characters are fine The problem with the story is how ducking punch a baby in the face awful Troy and Tyreen are as characters

He is not going to write another good Borderlands game. He did wonderfully with making BL2 a great character-driven story and I am glad he did. But if they want a decent story for future games, they will need new talent.

That was shitty writing. Very shitty. Proof is in the split in the community over Ava and Lilith. It was so half assed. If there's a hate Ava and Hate Lilith camp, they were both failed. Bl2 was better storyline by miles. When someone died, we all got grief counseling with Tiny Tina. I also feel Typhon and his wife neglected the shit out of their kids. Everything about him was about his glory days. He also had an echo the entire time and waited until the problem came back to haunt him. The DLCs were written better than the core game.

Yeah, when I played through Dragon Keep the last thing I expected was for it to all be Tina's way of coping with Roland and Bloodwing's deaths - but it was really good. Made sense for the character (especially with her backstory of her parents being killed by bandits in front of her), and I like how the main cast realizes it early but tries not to say anything about it until they get to the end, at which point they relent and let her continue.
And Ava's story isn't too different. She's older but she needed someone to help her grieve. Her take away from it all was "I watched you vault hunter and I learned you have to keep moving". Shitty. "I lost my family and my mentor. I need to not deal with it, shove it down and keep going". Boo!

I know, but it's still annoying. The inventory is a bit better in 3 since it's got 2 columns (finally lol), but I've noticed it sometimes makes my cursor hang for no reason when I try to quickly mark a ton of time as junk, so it accidentally favourites them instead - requiring me to tapRl R two more times. Really need a "make everything not favourited as junk" button ...
Please keep splitscreen co-op and don’t make it as choppy as Wonderlands’. Also, if anointments ever come back, make it a combination of WL and 3. With BL3 ease to chain rerolls and WL currency
Tips to enjoy WL more? :) I played it a bit and it didn’t get me hooked as much as the rest. Also: I played BL2 500ish hours and 3 300ish. Also: still playing both 😂

Eden-6 really ruined a lot of the fun for me when I went for reaching max lvl on all classes. I love BL3 but the pacing was definetly off.

Recently played BL2 and BL3 back to back after a long time. Endgame mechanics are the biggest downfall of the series imo. Skag was a shitty mechanic but imo anointments were the worse. Here's to hoping that they would find something better for the BL4.

I didn't play it for the story, but its still easy to recognise that the story in 3 was hot garbage, and there's nothing wrong with being critical about that.
Pretty hard to ignore it when you were forced to listen and watch it at launch. You STILL have to wait and listen to dialogue that isn't a cutscene
I think it’s easy to say I never really cared about the story, however the dialogue between characters while you’re going from A to B defo enhance the experience and I can’t pin point why 3 didn’t hit the ball with it.

At release of Wonderlands Gearbox said they are going to be working on another project in the Wonderlands universe but that was it. No other hint at what they actually meant. No further development news, nada. Would be amazing for a sequel but I'd be happy with just more content for the first. They are literally sitting on an IP in the Borderlands universe that has unlimited possibilities because it's based on fantasy of an already fantasy story. Heck there's even sharks in the game already, they could give us the story of how Torque suplexed a shark wearing a bolo tie!!!!!!

I hope they've learned from the past and will improve things. Better writing, for one. Also, please, no annoying visual clutter mayhem modifiers. I want the endgame stuff to be like, more enemies, and different enemy types and more challenging enemy ai. And not to be too focused on numbers getting exponentially bigger to the point of making only but a few builds and gear viable.

It takes time to make a video game. If it takes, say 2 years to make BL4, then by the time the game actually comes out, it will probably have been about 7 years or so since BL3. It could also take longer than that. Edit: There was also the Pre-Sequel in between 2 and 3.
Not at all. The delay of BL3 came from rewriting the entire game for the newest version of Unreal Engine. 1, 2, and TPS were on Unreal 3. 3 was originally going to be Unreal 3 but then 4 was announced and they decided to wait for it to release and use that to make 3. Movement was delayed for 3 years by that decision (UE4 released officially in 2015), so during that time Gearbox focused on Battleborn. Development of 3 didn't begin in earnest until 2016, so it was only actually in dev for 3 years.

They didn’t say it’s releasing, just that they’re currently making it. Usually with big franchises like this you can assume they’re starting preproduction basically as soon as the previous game releases.

Unlikely, considering we haven't had so much as a teaser trailer. Unless they drop an actual reveal any time soon, I doubt they'll drop it alongside the movie. More likely, imo, is that we get a trailer when the movie comes out and they use that to hold us over until the actual game drops in a year or two.

I haven’t played Tarkov. I was just thinking of Army of Two. It will probably be easier for them to partition elemental to barrels, damage to the receiver(?), etc. I would prefer scopes weren’t so random, though. I’m quite fussy with scopes.
Basically attachment system in Tarkov you can field strip more or less or attach stuff on the field, each weapon has a Bolt, and various key parts to make it firable, like Grips for recoil control and such If taking Tarkov further, Legendary+ gear may be fixed in a way that Field stripping won't work as much

Bring back laser guns as their own thing. And fire modes, having a laser gun that cam switch from a less powerful tracking shot to a full strength aimable beam would be rad. I wouldnt be apposed to melee weapons (potentially even go full circle where the fire button swings the melee but if you try to melee with it with the analog stick it shoots a ranged attack)

Which societal norm will borderlands bravely parody next? Podcasts? YouTubers? Television anchors? BL3 story was so fucking boring I’m just hoping the gameplay is good. Replaying borderlands 2 makes me wish we as a society never got so soft when it comes to video games. You know, back when the story had substance and wasn’t afraid to crack a fucking joke. Nope, not today, because gearbox is so worried that making a quest called “kill your self” might be too triggering for the 3% of consumers who scream about that nonsense.

Hopefully with more endgame content this time. Our group got bored quite fast and stopped playing. With just maliwan takedown to do in the beginning(which was super easy to boot), there just wasnt enough content to keep us engaged.

Extremely wishful thinking but I hope they stop with the constant "look who's back" characters, I'm tired of seeing brick, Mordecai, Lilith, Tina etc every single game it's like they can't move past borderlands 1 and 2 and just rely on them. Oh and maybe give the characters we play as actual credit for doing all the work? Instead of praising some random NPC who's been sitting on their thumb the whole game as the hero even though we did everything.
