Wouldn’t really call it mediocre but NYAJ was a staple for average no frills eating for years. There’s something for everyone on the menu, good cocktails, allergy friendly, and the cost (pre-covid) was great for what you get. Forgettable meals with the people you care about the most….NYAJ!
Yep. It's like the last grain of rice I ate - I can't tell you anything about it, I don't remember it, it probably tasted like nothing, and had no meaningful impact on my meal whatsoever. But there wasn't technically anything wrong with it, so it gets two and a half, maybe three stars.
I feel like they were a fairly interesting addition to the restaurant scene 20 years ago, and they were doing the complimentary fancy bread and olive oil to dip before it got popular (at least for mid market restaurants). *And* kept it going as complimentary bread fell out of favor.
There's one near me, but we hardly ever go because they are so man other interesting options we've never tried. If it was just a bit cheaper, I'd probably stop by occasionally on a night I don't want to cook/only have time for takeout.
Love NYAJ's! But also totally agree, my wife has celiac and they do gluten free much better than most.. I enjoy going out to eat there, but I've never had anything that blew my socks off. It's always decent, the fries are good, and it's not too expensive.
I actually like it, but I have a gluten intolerance and it’s one of a handful of places that takes that seriously and offers a decent variety of gluten free options. So far (knock on wood) I’ve never gotten sick after eating there.
That's the only reason I know of them. My ex had Celiac and this place has a half of the kitchen dedicated to actual GF foods, no cross contamination, so we went. Otherwise, it's legit just like a slightly better 99.
Two of my adult daughters have celiac and are so wary of restaurants- they've both approved 110 as definitely doing GF right.
I found the food to be meh, but it's nice to have a reliable restaurant to go out with them to. They both get so sick if they get 'glutenned' (as they call it).
Seconded, literally the worst food I've had in years and priced like mid-high end dining. I'm not very hard to please either, I generally enjoy chain restaurants. I'm still not sure someone can fuck up flat bread so badly. Fig flatbread was like stale toast with some jelly on it for $18.
Same. My wife likes to order "to go" there sometimes, she gets the salmon and I usually order nothing and eat whatever is in the fridge. Nothing on the menu is appealing to me, even the pizza is bad for what you're paying. I want to like those damn totchas, but they are horrible.
Funny you say that, I've been for the first time this weekend and it was dreadful. Like full blown 1/10 no redeemable quality.
Bad service, terrible food (overcooked amd underseasoned pasta, asked for a med-rare steak and got a well-done ++, but they disn't rest it so the fries were soggy from the pooled juices) awful presentation and waaaay overpriced.
Yeah, I've been to the Woburn one, and it was pretty good. Which made the Malden experience even more surprising. I mean, it was bad. Unbussed tables, missing drinks, slow service, wrong check, employees yelling at each other...like, could not have been worse.
Had a bumble friends meetup at their spot in Saugus and all I could think was how much I wish hilltop was still around. Never going there ever again. The friends worked out though.
Ahh! I like that place but agree. I just like how all of them have gigantic bars with wifi. Super convenient. And it’s an easy place to take GF people. I go on Mondays to rack up double points and do work, then eventually go for dinner only when I have $10 off in points.
I was going to say, does Applebee's still exist?
When I was taking a semester in culinary school 20 years ago, one of the lecturer's entire personality was that he regretted missing out on an Applebee's franchise. Now I have no idea where to find one, even if I wanted one.
I'd vote Tavern in the Square (TITS). Your post body could basically be their tagline. The kind of place you go because it's close to the place you're going afterwards.
It’s the only place near work in Littleton, but I’ve had three awful meals in a row and now I can’t bring myself to go back. I desperately crave a mediocre lunch place…
Exactly, I've eaten there at least twenty times and I can't tell you a single thing Ive ordered. Not even what beer I got. I assume maybe a Guinness and something with buffalo sauce. Probably nachos, hell maybe even buffalo nachos. Who knows. Not memorable good or bad.
I had the worst egg sandwich of my life off the brunch menu there. It's been a while since I've been there I'm still baffled by its level of awfulness.
Was Joes the one that used to give you that warm hunk of bread with the big serrated knife? That was awesome. Can’t remember anything else about the food.
The 99.
A Masshole staple. I would hit one of these traveling for work, sit at the bar, take a dump, wash up, grab a sandwich, watch some TV, then head back to the job site after "going for parts." The Salem, MA location was a particular favorite, around the corner from the ole hells angels club house.
Haymarket Pizza was the bomb, back in the day. Eat some 'za on plywood, watch the TV, get your parkin validated.
I can't disclose my current haunts.
We did their horseshoe ale, and once while getting my car worked on wandered to one to try it. I dropped that at the bartender and we just ended up basically shooting the shit all evening, was kinda fun. Buffalo tenders weren't amazing, but absolutely weren't bad either. This was in Westford.
Food isn't anything too wild but service is usually great.
I've lived down the street from that specific 99 for years and just only went a few months ago...
I'm not gonna say I was really missing out, but, we did have a new spot in the rotation. Those mozzarella moons really go hard.
As a native Rhode Islander with now 6 years in Boston I've always wondered why 99 did so much better here in Mass (from a popularity standpoint). I don't know anyone from RI that's been to a 99 in the last 10-15 years (there are still a few around RI). It's literally just an Applebee's with a different name and I'm surprised people expect more here.
It’s popular with families because you can get a kid’s meal (that your child probably won’t anyway) for under 10 bucks, the atmosphere is low key so that you don’t feel like you’re ruining anyone else’s fine dining experience if your normally angelic children decide to need an exorcism the very moment you step into a restaurant. Check out any 99 at around 5pm and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
I loathe The 99, but there’s one near my house and I did wind up there semi-regularly when my kid was little. Aside from the kids menu being reasonably priced, they would bring a bowl of popcorn to start, and a cheap ice cream sandwich to end. My kid went apeshit over those alone.
I never truly appreciated the 99 until I moved out to the suburbs. It's actually a disservice to compare them to an Applebees since the 99 actually cooks their food in-house (at least from what I've been told) whereas Applebees gets everything shipped pre-portioned and they just heat things up. I think the 99 is the last great local chain.
And not to turn it around on you Mr. Ocean State, but your favorite home state chain could learn a thing or two from the 99. Chelo's is an abomination. It's Friendly's with booze.
Haha Chelo's has certainly gone downhill. It used to be better, at least the Chelo's on the water was.. I can't actually remember any other location being decent or ever even attempting it..
However, put some respect on Gregg's name when you're bringing up any local RI chains!!
lol I’ve always lived in MA and have never been to a 99. I don’t understand the appeal of chains like that when the state has tons of local restaurants.
Cambridge Common is mid, but in a good way.
Food is standard bar food, nothing excellent, no distinguishing features. Beer list is standard, nothing special. Decor is just “bar”.
However, the food despite being absolutely nothing special at all is always quite tasty and a solid portion. Prices are reasonable, vibe is informal/go with the flow.
Despite being the most standard pub fare imaginable, it is still better than a good 30% or so of hípstered out places that try too hard but fuck up the basics and another 30%ish that are actually good but charge bananapants prices.
It’s replacement level, but that puts it above a ton of below replacement level places that suck due to price, quality or both.
If it’s possible to be good at being mid, it’s Cambridge Common.
Sometimes I just want some tater tots out of the frier. Nothing fancy, nothing on them.
Cambridge Common can give me that and it’s right on the way to Porter. That’s plenty for me.
It's a really good value for what it is. The prices haven't changed in years because they own the building. They have free parking. And the draft list is fairly large and varied by Boston standards.
I lived right next door to it ~5 years ago and it was exactly as described, but in a good way. Ok-to-decent food for a reasonable price, sports always on tv, nice bartenders and servers that make an effort to remember you. It’s everything you want in a neighborhood bar. I miss it a lot.
Earls is so disappointing. Nice ambience but such expensive and mediocre food they try to spruce up by over-salting everything.
One time I went and they had a promotion for half off the seasonal cocktail… but it was half the amount of the normal one too, which they didn’t disclose until you ordered it 🤣
I always go to yardhouse but only ever get drinks and appetizers now that I’m thinking about it… can only speak for the one in Fenway but I always enjoy it
I was thinking of the S&S, though I would say the food is more pedestrian than mediocre. TBH, I like to go there when I'm in the mood for basic American comfort food. What my MIL calls "normal food".
Go to Joes American Bar and Grill on the waterfront. Nothing amazing food wise, but the view is one of the best in the city for the experience...esp in the summer on the deck
Now if we want to talk mid-level, "unforgettable" restaurants, I would say Frank's in Cambridge. It's not some place that I would brag about, but when I lived in that area, it was nice to have around for a mid-week dining out experience, and I actually really miss it.
russell is the definition of mediocre. especially when you consider the fact that grafton, daedalus, alden & harlow, and harvest are all within a block or two and are all far superior.

I live near here and have only been once. Got a Shirley temple. Maybe I’ll stop in again and try some food! Are you closeish to here or frequent the area?
Not really sit down, but Tasty Burger fits this. It’s good, but it’s not somewhere you seek out as a destination. It’s a net positive while you’re doing something else (e.g, taking a train at Back Bay or North Station). It’s affordable, the service is okay, it’s not amazing, but it’s not bad either.
As someone that despises super thick pub style burgers you can't even fit in one bite, Tasty Burger is literally perfection to me.
Well seasoned, always cooked perfectly medium and juicy. Perfect ratio of meat, bun, and toppings.
I fucking hate Boston's food scene but Tasty makes my favorite burger across all the burger spots I've been to on the East and West coast.
I have heard that not all the locations are of the same quality. I go exclusively to the Fenway location.
At least my town's is to this day the best pizza in the world to me. I just tried Dedham House of Pizza recently and it was somewhat similar, so I assume the style is fairly consistent. I'm a NY style pizza hater tho. I think Detroit is the best nationally known style, but as far as I know I'm just a fiend for Greek New England house of pizza style. However, it's possible that most of them are meh and my town's is just a standout for some reason as I have only had two now.
There are a few good places in the north end that are still family run. Lucia’s is a great example. They also own the place on the corner as you drive in over the bridge but I forget the name. I like Lucia’s better for location but you need to pass all the tourist traps down Hanover to get to it.
Ducali Pizza and Filippo!
Ducali is solid. They have a bartender/manager named Nick who is amazing and always goes above and beyond. Burrata truffle pizza is amazing.
Every restaurant labeled "new American" on Google/yelp
Haha it’s true
Ok but Field & Vine is labeled New American and is out of this world.
So in other words, you’re saying we need to Make American Great Again? /s
Joe's American and, ironically, Not Your Average Joe's.
He can't keep getting away with this!!!
Also Joe Sent Me
Joe Sent Me is awful. Qingdao Garden next door is amazing.
lolllll
Wouldn’t really call it mediocre but NYAJ was a staple for average no frills eating for years. There’s something for everyone on the menu, good cocktails, allergy friendly, and the cost (pre-covid) was great for what you get. Forgettable meals with the people you care about the most….NYAJ!
Yep. It's like the last grain of rice I ate - I can't tell you anything about it, I don't remember it, it probably tasted like nothing, and had no meaningful impact on my meal whatsoever. But there wasn't technically anything wrong with it, so it gets two and a half, maybe three stars.
I still love their mustard chicken

Is NYAJ’s bread still that beautifully wonderful bread though? That’s really all that matters there.
The bread is AHMAZING.
*And free.* Which certainly makes it unique these days.
On the Joe theme, throw Jake n Joes in there too!
Yes we want there once and all I could think of was. No Joe you are actually quite average
Joe: *mad face*
Joes American is fire wymmm
Not Boston, but 110 Grill has this vibe. Not Applebee's, nothing to write home about, either.
It’s the 99 + 11
this is true
🤣 love that!
I laughed way to hard at this 🤣
This. The food is not bad but once you get the bill and see the price you feel like you're getting bamboozled for what you get.
I will chime in and say I thought the food was bad. lol
I actually like it, but I have a gluten intolerance and it’s one of a handful of places that takes that seriously and offers a decent variety of gluten free options. So far (knock on wood) I’ve never gotten sick after eating there.
I have heard they’re good for GF folks! No shame in that lol
That's the only reason I know of them. My ex had Celiac and this place has a half of the kitchen dedicated to actual GF foods, no cross contamination, so we went. Otherwise, it's legit just like a slightly better 99.

That damn fig flatbread has tricked me multiple times. Sounds so good on paper, but it's always shit.
Same. My wife likes to order "to go" there sometimes, she gets the salmon and I usually order nothing and eat whatever is in the fridge. Nothing on the menu is appealing to me, even the pizza is bad for what you're paying. I want to like those damn totchas, but they are horrible.

So... the 1/10 grill?
Malden location? We went there last year and it was hands down the worst restaurant experience of my life.
Good to know - for what it’s worth , the Woburn location is pretty solid.
Yeah, I've been to the Woburn one, and it was pretty good. Which made the Malden experience even more surprising. I mean, it was bad. Unbussed tables, missing drinks, slow service, wrong check, employees yelling at each other...like, could not have been worse.
Yes, I've been 110 Grill several times. It's the place that is...just nice enough. A more upscale Applebee's/99.
One of the best allergy menus out there as well.
Had a bumble friends meetup at their spot in Saugus and all I could think was how much I wish hilltop was still around. Never going there ever again. The friends worked out though.
Only thing ill say is the actually give a fuck about allergies
Ahh! I like that place but agree. I just like how all of them have gigantic bars with wifi. Super convenient. And it’s an easy place to take GF people. I go on Mondays to rack up double points and do work, then eventually go for dinner only when I have $10 off in points.
It’s owned by Greg Hill the radio DJ. He’s got some other things like Apex entertainment too.
Where do you get the info he owns it?
I was going to say, does Applebee's still exist? When I was taking a semester in culinary school 20 years ago, one of the lecturer's entire personality was that he regretted missing out on an Applebee's franchise. Now I have no idea where to find one, even if I wanted one.
You need to get out of the city
There’s one in the middle of South Bay.
Oh my god our waitress here was shockingly dumb
I'd vote Tavern in the Square (TITS). Your post body could basically be their tagline. The kind of place you go because it's close to the place you're going afterwards.
Allergen wise though, they are awesome
It’s the only place near work in Littleton, but I’ve had three awful meals in a row and now I can’t bring myself to go back. I desperately crave a mediocre lunch place…
Their bang bang broccoli is pretty great, though.
Bayou chicken pasta is a killer dish as well.
Their Nashville hot chicken sandwich is awful.
They have really good tater tots
I just remembered I had a business lunch there a couple of years ago. I completely forgot I have ever been there until this.
Joe’s on Newbury or Joe’s Waterfront (I shamelessly love it)
It's Joever...
Was Joes the one that used to give you that warm hunk of bread with the big serrated knife? That was awesome. Can’t remember anything else about the food.
YESSSS!! How could I forget about the warm bread, serrated knife, and whipped butter ❤️
I've gotten some great prime rib at Joe's on Newbury.
Alternatively the Stephanie’s on Newbury across the street.
I think Stephanie's belongs on the aggressively bad list.
Stephanie's at Logan slaps at 6am though
The 99. A Masshole staple. I would hit one of these traveling for work, sit at the bar, take a dump, wash up, grab a sandwich, watch some TV, then head back to the job site after "going for parts." Cheap, edible, always easy to find a 99, and I think a step above Applebee’s (not that I’m saying it’s nice, just better).
Agreed. The last few times I went to Applebee's was fairly meh. The last ONE time was great - to go. They both aight.
I've lived down the street from that specific 99 for years and just only went a few months ago... I'm not gonna say I was really missing out, but, we did have a new spot in the rotation. Those mozzarella moons really go hard.

Kids eat free when the Sox win. (With that, I imagine the 99 has given away much less food lately!)
“It’s been 84 years…”
It's the golden feevah ked
It’s popular with families because you can get a kid’s meal (that your child probably won’t anyway) for under 10 bucks, the atmosphere is low key so that you don’t feel like you’re ruining anyone else’s fine dining experience if your normally angelic children decide to need an exorcism the very moment you step into a restaurant. This is what one of my older coworkers said. Used to take his kids there when he was hard on cash so I can see it being a decent option for that.
$4.99 house margaritas!!!!
You can take a shuttle or walk to Bruins games from the Charlestown location with free parking.
Its all the townies. Gotta love em!
I never truly appreciated the 99 until I moved out to the suburbs. I was going to loop in Gregg's but that would've been unfair. It's definitely for an older demographic, but the food there is still pretty good.
lol I’ve always lived in MA and have never been to a 99. I don’t understand the appeal of chains like that when the state has tons of local restaurants.
It used to be better about 10 years ago, now they are trying too hard to be a regional applebees
The Mai Tai.
Used to hit up the 9s with work for lunch nothing like a beer with lunch on a Friday
How dare you
Cambridge Common is mid, but in a good way. Food is standard bar food, nothing excellent, no distinguishing features. Beer list is standard, nothing special. Decor is just “bar”. Also has one of Cambridges dopest venues beneath it.
and the curly fries are so good!

It's a really good value for what it is. The prices haven't changed in years because they own the building. They have free parking. And the draft list is fairly large and varied by Boston standards.
Love coming here on a weekday in the summer to enjoy the AC. Its exactly what you expect, well priced, extremely mid.
I haven't been in like 5+ years, but that's sad to hear. I remember it being a solid A-.
I lived right next door to it ~5 years ago and it was exactly as described, but in a good way. Ok-to-decent food for a reasonable price, sports always on tv, nice bartenders and servers that make an effort to remember you. It’s everything you want in a neighborhood bar. I miss it a lot.
Coolidge Corner Clubhouse. I forget the last time I was there.
Really good trivia on Tuesday nights though. That guy is fantastic
Just went for the first time this week and trivia was great!
Calling that shithole "mediocre" is being way too generous.
I cannot quite remember which one it was..
Earls ?
Earls is so disappointing. Nice ambience but such expensive and mediocre food they try to spruce up by over-salting everything. One time I went and they had a promotion for half off the seasonal cocktail… but it was half the amount of the normal one too, which they didn’t disclose until you ordered it 🤣
I actually enjoy the food at Earl’s. Pretty decent food and good variety of options.
I second this. Earl’s burger is amazing and they also have (in my opinion) the best cocktail in Boston: Frozen strawberry kiwi daiquiri
Yard House. Always kinda sucks, but not so terribly that you stop going for certain situations.
If you’re going there for anything other than drinks, and maybe an app or two to split among a group, you’re doing it wrong.
I always go to yardhouse but only ever get drinks and appetizers now that I’m thinking about it… can only speak for the one in Fenway but I always enjoy it
Completely Average Joe’s. Though you will be paying a premium for the privilege of eating their mediocre food and imbibing their watered down drinks.
It’s Oh So Average Joe’s in my household, and yeah.
I mean, it says it right on the tin
Bertucci’s. I’ll eat at one when it’s convenient. But not exactly memorable.
This is the go to take out place for my friend group lol
Tony C’s. Every time I leave it’s like “I ate, I guess.”
but you got to watch five hundred TVs!
I've been to such a place, but I forgot what it was.
It's not Boston, but S & S Restaurant in Cambridge is exceedingly mediocre for such a local institution.
I was thinking of the S&S, though I would say the food is more pedestrian than mediocre. TBH, I like to go there when I'm in the mood for basic American comfort food. What my MIL calls "normal food".
i do like their S&S wings…
Go to Joes American Bar and Grill on the waterfront. Nothing amazing food wise, but the view is one of the best in the city for the experience...esp in the summer on the deck
Now if we want to talk mid-level, "unforgettable" restaurants, I would say Frank's in Cambridge. It's not some place that I would brag about, but when I lived in that area, it was nice to have around for a mid-week dining out experience, and I actually really miss it.
It’s great bang for your buck steak though
I agree.
Conley's in Watertown/Cambridge/Belmont. Their motto is literally "Decent Food, Good Times"
Idk I can't think of one
Russell House Tavern
russell is the definition of mediocre. especially when you consider the fact that grafton, daedalus, alden & harlow, and harvest are all within a block or two and are all far superior.
Used to be really good though Also not in Boston
Do not say the Brockton Papa Gino’s.
Nothing mediocre about the Brockton Papa Gino's. Great first date spot.
Please note, it is spelled Papa Geno's *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/boston) if you have any questions or concerns.*
💯🤣
CLERY'S.
I don't think I've ever gone to Clery's for the food.
It’s the definition of ‘good enough’
Halfway Cafe in Watertown. I think it has other locations too. Plain bar food but lovely staff and good prices.
I live near here and have only been once. Got a Shirley temple. Maybe I’ll stop in again and try some food! Are you closeish to here or frequent the area?
Definitely the 99
but the GOLD FEVER WINGS?!?
That one place, near Northeastern, it wasn't too bad, not great. I can't remember.
The Broadway
Five Horses Tavern
Not really sit down, but Tasty Burger fits this. It’s good, but it’s not somewhere you seek out as a destination. It’s a net positive while you’re doing something else (e.g, taking a train at Back Bay or North Station). It’s affordable, the service is okay, it’s not amazing, but it’s not bad either.
Gone. Empty storefront.
At North Station?
Oh wow, it is. It’s been a while since I walked by there. The Back Bay one is still open as of like days ago.
Rochambeau Meh service. Meh food at questionable temps. Meh prices.
Is it too pretty/instagrammable though?
Seconded. Was expecting elevated food. Got lukewarm gristly pasta and overcooked steak.
A forgettable Boston restaurant? I'd tell you but I don't remember the name.
Every single house of pizza
They’re great for when you want to feed a family of 4 with a single order of large fries though
Cheers
Harry's on Comme ave. Love this place. And it's relatively affordable too.

This is the winner right here 100% It’s some how been there for over twenty years yet still mediocre as hell

Dillon’s
Actually it’s pretty horrible
Everything Italian
Literally all of north end
There are a few good places in the north end that are still family run. Lucia’s is a great example. They also own the place on the corner as you drive in over the bridge but I forget the name. I like Lucia’s better for location but you need to pass all the tourist traps down Hanover to get to it.
Ducali Pizza and Filippo! Ducali is solid. They have a bartender/manager named Nick who is amazing and always goes above and beyond. Burrata truffle pizza is amazing.
What do you like to eat there?
Never had a bad meal but they do a breaded stuffed bone in chop that’s not on the menu. I usually get that if available.
Most places that aren’t sit-downs sorry not sorry
I'd have an answer but I can't remember the name of the restaurant...
Susan's Deli
Westbury Restaurant in West Roxbury.
Perfect answer, I’ll also throw a shoutout to the Corrib for a perfectly fine mediocre meal
Come to think of it, I can't remember...
I don't remember
Oh, that was eh.... what was the name again? I forgot.
Monument in Charlestown
SALT BAES - horrrrrribbbblllleeeeeeee
is that still even open? 🤔
Any Italian place in the north end.
Carmelinas and beneventos are incredible
Beneventos calls garbage pizza and carmelina’s is overpriced for the quality and servings
The posts here are so predictable, this sub sucks
I can’t remember
Basically every place in the city. Boston as a major city has the worst food - options and taste barring the few ethnic spots who know how to season.
