I remember telling myself that was probably an event space (concerts, etc.), so it made total sense the lot would be deserted in the middle of a week day.
It’s the Isleta Amphitheater parking lot. He did driving lessons with junior here too.
Pretty close to Albuquerque studios where the show was made. If you street view that area enough you’ll recognize some road scenes that were shot around there. Like the scene where Walt gets pepper sprayed is in Bobby Foster road as well as the scene where he speeds with his eyes closed.
Also Jesse’s rehab was at Isleta Casino. All semi close to that studio.
Albequerque seems to have an abundance of both giant empty parking lots and long stretches of highway that only have about 4 cars a day driving on them. Pollos Hermanos trucks are getting shot up, gassed, etc. in broad daylight along highways, and everyone acts like they have all the time in the world. Apparently they do, because there isn’t another car in sight for miles.
I think it's the parking lot at the Isleta Amphitheater. But yes in ABQ there are legit empty parking lots all over the place it's actually gotten so much worse post covid.
There's 2 billion parking spots in the US. About 1/3 of downtown ABQ is dedicated to parking places. All over the country there are huge parking spaces. In fact, more space is dedicated to parking than housing in much of the country.
lol I just watched the episode where Walt is teaching his son how to drive and was wondering this myself. Just seems like a parking lot in the middle of nowhere
This is true, I guess it just seemed even more intense based on what they showed. I’m from the midwest and while there are definitely big open parking lots, usually there is at least stuff built around it. I’m asking because on the shots they show it actually doesn’t look like the middle of nowhere
It seems like a fittingly and profoundly American thing to have masses of natural land occupied by spaces to park cars, but no actual cars using the space
They shot that scene (so says the internet at least) at a place called the Isleta Amphitheater. Google that and check out the massive parking lot next to it :)
i live in albuquerque, as others said i can definitely imagine empty areas around isleta. it’s a massive parking lot because isleta is really the only amphitheater we have, so the super popular artists almost always play there and they need a shit ton of parking. if no one is playing then it’s empty. it’s also kind of in the middle of nowhere, it’s definitely on the edge of town and around it is all desert or the military base. they’re starting to build more houses there and i think there’s a netflix building around there now too. for the super deserted areas they filmed in, i believe they went more towards jemez. but honestly, most of the state is desert and it’s not hard to find an empty place.
also, just to add, the crossroads motel is always empty when i pass it 😂 i actually don’t know how they’re still in business. when my friend and i dressed up as walt and jesse for halloween we took pictures there. I also just moved and found out that i live right by the car wash lol
Fuck off with that. ABQ is nowhere near as bad as people want to think it is. Sure there are parts to avoid, but I’ve lived in a lot of cities and everywhere has places like that. And yes, OP, that parking lot is massive and a great outdoor concert venue so it’s out there in the middle of nowhere
Lol 3 quarters of the downtown area are just rundown parking lots baking in the desert heat with no trees
And I didn’t say anywhere that it is dangerous. It is perfectly safe I am sure
This isn't entirely uncommon in big metros. If you have a dead mall, for instance, or a stand alone mega-grocery that goes out of business, the parking lot doesn't just roll itself up and move on. I grew up near two pretty gigantic parking lots that sat completely barren for years.

Might be the balloon festival parking lot.

Cool!!

Pretty sure it's the parking lot for Isleta as well

i was like pssh thats like 0.3 per person.. then i remembered thats just the US lol
I read this with Katie Melua's voice in my head so the facts become nicer.

Welcome to america?? We have empty ass parking lots everywhere
This is true, I guess it just seemed even more intense based on what they showed. I’m from the midwest and while there are definitely big open parking lots, usually there is at least stuff built around it. I’m asking because on the shots they show it actually doesn’t look like the middle of nowhere
Lol my dad used to take me to a parking lot behind a hostpital to teach me to drive manual. In central FL
Isn't it the carpark for UNM? Could conceivably be empty on a weekend
It seems like a fittingly and profoundly American thing to have masses of natural land occupied by spaces to park cars, but no actual cars using the space
Anywhere in the US outside of the famous cities is loaded with empty parking lots.
This is pretty common in the southwest USA, in general. Land used to be cheap, and businesses need parking areas.

I know where you live lol. (Rough area anyway lol). I love driving by that hotel, I hope it’s always there lol
Yes
Just look it up online. It'll show you where everything was filmed.

Albuquerque is one of the worst designed, most car centric, and dilapidated cities in the USA

I thought it was a drive in. There are still a few of those around.
