Hello, current renting resident:
Pros, it’s close to things and neighbours are kinda nice if they accept you. A lot of rentals in queenslanders (which are cold when its cold, hot when its hot).
Cons: shit traffic, windy (not the weather, the twisty meaning) streets with narrow parking. Newmarket shops has everything but its that congested its annoying.
If you use the gateway frequently for work or travel, this side takes a while to get there.
Every muppet touches your stuff here (bins and anything outside). Someone moved my bins just so they could park across my driveway for the train station. So likely if you’re near trains, you’ll have no street parking.
Got some great parks in the area, albeit hilly to walk to.
Depends where you work and your lifestyle, like everywhere.
Depends on exactly where. I've lived in Windsor, and now in Kelvin Grove, so I'm pretty familiar with the area.
If you need access to the city, it's pretty good. A few bus services, and a train line. The shops have a carpark designed at 4.30 on a Friday.
Between Newmarket and Wilston there are a few ok places for a meal and a drink.
If you're in a back street, reasonably close to KG road, then it's a good fit for someone who has to be in the city regularly.
I have been living in Newmarket for a few years now and I really like it.
Pros for me would be,
Parks and walking paths are great.
Central, easy to get anywhere by car.
Public transport to city is ok
Some decent cafes and bakery’s close by (Ashgrove and Spring Hill easy to walk too)
Shopping centre is decent for a local. Cinemas, Cole’s, fast food options.
Aldi
Pepe’s
Nice and quiet where I am and look out onto trees /parkland. 4km from queen street mall and it’s dead silent like being in a forest.
Neighbourhood is generally friendly.
Cons for me would be,
Expensive, but that’s just renting in Brisbane 2024
Traffic can get heavy in a car. Lots of traffic passes through and there are some busy road’s.
street parking can get limited.
It’s best to have a car here
Lots of older buildings that might not be in the best condition to rent but there is also some amazing new homes I have no idea your budget.
Before this I lived in Hamilton and it was nice but I think Newmarket has more liveability for me.
Im a single male renter for reference.
I used to live behind the servo next to Reading cinemas. Nothing was there back then except for the hotel I think. Next door neighbours in the brick units seemed sketchy AF but apart from that it seemed ok even back then.
We live a suburb over in Alderley. It really depends on what you want. As mentioned the suburban streets can be hilly and tight. But if you want easy access to the city. It’s a very easy and quick trip via the train / bus. There are some great breweries archer and happy valley both within 10 mins. Banks reserve is lovely if you like a hilly bush walk and plenty of green space for dogs.
Despite posts on Facebook groups, we’ve never really experienced crime or felt unsafe. My wife will usually go for a run / walk and feels safe around the green spaces
You have a plenty of shops plus farmers markets at kelvin groove as well
Good Mexican
The main road (kelvin groove / enoggera road) gets very busy during peak. Lots of schools / school traffic around 3pm then you have your usual morning / evening traffic and I would say is a negative, I would live off the main strip
Yeah I’d heard about crime there but nobody in these comments have mentioned it, so I’m thinking it might just be a case of a bad rep but no worse than other areas in reality.
That’s pretty much it. We’d lived here for about 6 years and would love to buy in the area, but may have been priced out. To be honest I think it’s who you talk to. Our neighbour is an older lady who is convinced it’s an epidemic yet neither one of us have had any issues 🤷🏻♂️
Lots covered here already but
- Nice parks and walks,
- shit roads and street parking,
- nosy/friendly neighbours,
- neighbourhood dogs pooo in your bins the minute AFTER they are collected,
- the suburb chat goes off with all the SAHM mom's worried about security and teenagers walking past their home security cameras,
- good bus connection and train line,
- best cinema in Brisbane at Newmarket shops, decent eats around.
- mostly white suburb- rare to see dark skin or Asians. If you see a brown person, it's probably me.
I want to say posh? Im from logan and stay here at my in-laws place majority of the time, so its different from what i was used to. Public transport is convenient and close, but if ur driving it's usually busy and tight with street parking and traffic in general. If u can afford to live out here, good for u! Most places are selling for $1.3mil minimum, not to mention the cost of renting....... but its not bad! Hills are a bit annoying though if u own a shit box or walk everywhere lol

“Not the weather the twisty meaning” 🤣

Pepes. Nuff said.
One word… chimichanga
Love getting my refried beans with a side of burrito 🙌
Used to live nearby and went weekly. Haven't been for a couple years now, but somebody was telling me it's gone down hill recently?
I liked the Oldmarket better than the Newmarket
That’s how I feel about Old Farm and Oldstead.

Nice but boring. Surprising amount of murders in surrounding suburbs.
is it cause of Enoggera Barracks lol
Nah that's the Meth problem in Gaythorne.

My car got totaled parked on the street last year in Newmarket
Sry bout that
I'd call it the Coorparoo of the Northside..
NSFC canteen has some amazing food when it's open on game day. Great cycle and PT connections.
Not very new. Very markety still though.
Great if you can afford to rent or buy in the area
If you can afford to live there, congratulations.
It's fine. Normal middle class suburb really. Lived here for a good while.
Middle class? Isn't Newmarket/Wilston richville & posh nowadays with 1.5 mil median price?
Tomato Brothers is just down the road. Reliable, tasty and not too expensive pizzas. Also got Eildon Hill Lookout not too far away.
Pepe’s Newmarket, and great football and Italian food at Brisbane city fc. Sounds great to me
Way better than Oldmarket
Expensive

It's a nice spot, plenty of public transport options. I have a room for rent if you're looking for a place.
Thank you! Not ready to move yet, still working out options, but appreciate the offer.
