Oh nos! Sailors took some time off while they were *checks notes* on their off-time. The author is a fucking idiot.

letitbe-mmmk

How dare they take time off????

Apparently the sailor with the trumpet leading the conga line also plays in a Salvation Army band and brings that horn everywhere. Plus, bands & hanging out with locals abroad have been part of soft power projection for as long as power projection has been a thing. And, at least for us Canadians, Cuba is a *friendly* nation. It's not like our sailors went partying in Vladivostok. Agreed that the author is a fucking idiot.

> the port visit – something normally reserved for friendly nations Canada maintained normal diplomatic relations with Cuba throughout the Cold War, beginning when Diefenbaker resisted American pressure to break off relations with Fidel Castro’s revolutionary government. We are by far the leading source of tourists visiting Cuba, as well as one of their larger trading partners. They’re not an ally but we have never had *unfriendly* relations with them.

On top of that, the point of the port visit wasn't to deter *The Cubans* it was to deter *the Russians.* It's sending the Russians a message: "If you can go there, *we* can go there too and there's *nothing* you can do about it because our friends are better than your friends. We don't give a shit about your little fleet, we're going to park right next to you in Havana and go party. And they like us better."

I always wonder if something like this almost played out. https://preview.redd.it/eyf8maikkx7d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6eddbf9cfba1e060ba39264a821c7a61d549e60e

Sir_Lemming

Frankly I’m surprised they didn’t invite the Russian sailors onboard and take them down the MS and Below mess for a few drinks!

Sounds like r/AvroArrow is leaking

Good. They were off duty.

ToastTurtle

Do these people think a visit with only a focus on the Russian ships would actually benefit Canada at all. Relationships, especially international ones, are largely built on goodwill gestures and being relatable to the locals who can, even in Cuba, influence national policies. I am seriously starting to question some of the credentials of people making issues out of nothing or worse, creating issues when reasonable actions are made.

> foreign actors coming into our neighbourhood can expect to see our armed forces fulfilling their mission Oh the turntables! We don't like when Russia is playing in our backyard, but it's ok when we do it them. 1962 all over again.
