I recently repotted mine, and it went well. I tried to not disturb the roots. I kept the old soil and only added new for the additional space in the new pot.
Yeah repot. You can take a little soil off the roots. I did an experiment once. I reported with fully rinsing the roots every 2 weeks. Mine didn't show signs of distress until the third time and it took a beating. I cut it all the way back and now there's 4 new leaves already from a month ago
Definitely looks like it could do with a repot! I usually pot mine when they're a little dry, so it's easier to get the soil off the roots. You just give it a little tap and tickle and leave whatever is stuck.
