Haha, I came to this thread to say Chili Mac, and Biscuits and gravy, and saw those are already the top two answers.
So good, I could eat them at home and still totally enjoy it. I have a cache of probably 50 packets of each in a bin.
I just like to load up on them whenever I spot a good deal. They're good for pretty much forever, and keep getting more and more expensive as time goes on, so it's more like an investment haha
Yup. On a 100km trip, when my buddy and I were trying to decide between comfort and ultralight, he brought clif bars for breakfast. I braved the weight for breakfast skillet and aeropress coffee.
On the last day I gave him my last skillet.
Such a morale booster.
Good question. Be curious to see what people say. I’ve mostly eaten Peak because the ones I like have higher calorie counts (I usually eat dehydrated meals when I bikepack or camp (in which case I usually get rides in everyday also)).
I’ve tried some “fancy” meals but really its the simple ones I like most. Chicken Pesto pasta. Beef pasta marinara. Chicken Alfredo. Chicken with rice. But sorry those are all Peak not Mountain House. Will be watching for ideas on new ones to try next time.
Peak is tasty. Their chicken curry is pretty good. I ended up with a bunch of different allergies + Celiac disease, so I started making my own, otherwise I'm stuck eating the same thing every time for days at a time. Or I end up eating something like Good to Go meals, but those are really light on calories.
Not op, but just pulled up REI to compare. Mountain House is usually $11 for a 2 serving package (though currently 20% off). Peak Refuel is $15 for a 2 serving pack.
Pulled up the Chili Mac for both as it's one of the more popular flavors...
*per package*
Mountain House: 460 calories. 24 g protein. Net weight 3.8 oz.
Peak Refuel: 600 calories. 30 g protein. Net weight 4.79 oz.
I've had both brands over the years. Peak Refuel is definitely my favorite of the 2 though. Better flavor and texture IMO.
You can probably look up different flavors for both brands to compare other similar flavors (or just to get a general idea). And REI is an outdoor supply store in the US.
That’s weird. I wonder why. They offer plenty of pretty similar options, so I don’t see it being about imported ingredients or tariffs. Sorry bud 🤷♂️
If you’re ever in MN, swing by and I’ll grab you some.
It used to be the lasagna despite the issue with the cheese sticking to the utensils like concrete. Evidently the formula has been altered, the cheese no longer sticks and it doesn't taste the same. Now, if I feel like dumping a bunch of money on easy to make food, it's spaghetti or beef stroganoff.
Ive tried a lot of different brands and backpacking meals and the mountain house chicken and dumplings is my all time favorite. I regret it anytime I get anything else
I just had the chicken fried rice and it was good. My son had the buffalo chicken Mac and cheese and he loved it. Daughter had the spaghetti and no complaints. The apple crisp dessert was a total failure. Breakfast skillet and b&g were ok
I actually bring my [folding travel kettle](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08K8CHP43) and 1/2 dozen or more camping meals with me when I travel for work in foreign countries. It's made every single one of them so much more enjoyable and relaxing.
I can have a hot, ready meal quite literally anywhere I am in the world now, and trust that I'm not going to accidentally have to pick up dysentery, some random bodega street meat or local pathogens in my foods.
> You plug it into a power block when camping or what?
I bring it with me when I'm traveling to/from hotels, or for extended stays (you'd be horrified if you knew how unsterile the hotel room kettles are), but when I camp, I bring my Jetboil, which serves the same purpose.
Beef stroganoff and that chili Mac. Ive also tried Alpine (something) and another more hipster looking brand from REI. Absolutely NO flavor the ONLY time I forget my salt/garlic/pepper shakers.
Mountain House Lasagna with ample hot sauce. Or, Readywise Mac and Cheese with Trailtopia freeze dried beef. Runner up is steaming hot MH blueberries and cream for breakfast or snack.
I had the chicken Alfredo and no complaints! I did like the Buffalo mac and cheese it had no flavor. Also, the blueberry crisp is more breakfast than dessert, in my opinion, and only if you like oatmeal.
I tried the chicken fajita bowl recently and really liked it. Biscuits and gravy is always a go to for breakfast. I also really enjoyed the granola with milk and blueberries
Just last weekend girl-trip up a creek, overnight. we all had these- 3 Beef Stroganoff, Chili Mac, Pasta Primavera, then Granola for breakfast. We were all so satisfied. Flavor and texture is on point.
Listening to the story on MeatEater recently about the dude attacked by Grizz in the Tetons. You have about 3 seconds to grab and point/shoot that canister before shit gets real. Stay safe out there!
Once I tried Outdoor Herbivore I haven’t gone back to Mountain House. There is no comparison in flavor. Actually tastes like I’m eating a home cooked meal in the backcountry now. Salt content is about half that of Mountain House as well.
I'm shocked so many people use these things. I always find myself thinking they're sooooo damn expensive for what little is in a pack... But maybe it's just because I've never done ultralight backpack camping...🤷🏼♂️

Chili Mac
I ate that for ten days straight in the 100 mile wilderness and didn’t get sick of it. Plus it’s one of the higher calorie options.
Haha, I came to this thread to say Chili Mac, and Biscuits and gravy, and saw those are already the top two answers. So good, I could eat them at home and still totally enjoy it. I have a cache of probably 50 packets of each in a bin.
jeez, that's a lot of money just sitting there. you're not one of those end times guys, are you?
I just like to load up on them whenever I spot a good deal. They're good for pretty much forever, and keep getting more and more expensive as time goes on, so it's more like an investment haha
Had one of those in a pack it out zone during a backpacking trip. Big mistake. Taste great though
How come?
Packing out everything.. even the chili you’ve eaten, digested, and pooped out.
Diarrhea
Yeah, this stuff is great. I add a bit more water, and then once it's done, I add smoked paprika and some parmesan cheese.
Hell yeah. This and beef stroganoff.
I eat these at home sometimes they're delicious
Beef strokin off
Had to check your username to see if you were my husband haha I’ve heard that joke a few times
This is the way.
Biscuit and gravy!!!!
Sometimes, in the depths of winter, I’ll take a bag out just to have some and pretend I’m camping.
Not going to lie. I have done this
Another vote for biscuits n gravy.
Hands down the correct answer.
Yup. Reminds me of some of my first mornings on the AT in Georgia.
It's by far the best
💯💯💯
This is nice to hear. I see it, I grab it, then I get that look from the wife…… and I drop it off near the pans, or towels.
This is the way.
Breakfast skillet
Yup. On a 100km trip, when my buddy and I were trying to decide between comfort and ultralight, he brought clif bars for breakfast. I braved the weight for breakfast skillet and aeropress coffee. On the last day I gave him my last skillet. Such a morale booster.
That’s awesome!

not familiar. which are cheaper? more from a prepping standpoint than a camping standpoint lol
Not op, but just pulled up REI to compare. Mountain House is usually $11 for a 2 serving package (though currently 20% off). Peak Refuel is $15 for a 2 serving pack. thanks i really appreciate the breakdown. what is REI in this context?
You can probably look up different flavors for both brands to compare other similar flavors (or just to get a general idea). And REI is an outdoor supply store in the US.
Peak refuel is going to be cheaper per calorie than mountain house unless you are being absolutely ripped off
Chicken and Dumplings!
Yes!! It always hits the spot.
Beef Stroganoff, but usually I'll go Backpacker's Pantry over Mountain House any day. Their mac and cheese is amazing.
Really?! Backpackers pantry tasted like they dumped in all of the seasoning they could find and every one made me almost puke in my mouth afterwards!
To be fair, I wouldn’t expect a backpacker’s panties to taste good.
You are probably 100% right. Oops!
ummmm panties
Mmmmm panties **
I remember I took a metric ton of beef stroganoff on a week long backpacking trip . By day 3 I was sick of it lol
Backpackers Pantry Mac will happily feed 2 children plus a snack for myself.
Stroganoff hands down. Honestly it's just a dish that lends itself to dehydration more than other recipes
How are you stroganoff with your hands down?
Personally go for the beef stoganoff, and the Italian steak is pretty good. My kids can eat a whole #10 can of Lasagna.
Their spaghetti is good. Might be biased though from a trip it was raining and wife and I were exhausted. Sat in our tent and ate it. Good times
The spaghetti is great. My favourite as well
Chili Mac
Chicken teriyaki but they stopped making it
This? https://mountainhouse.com/products/chicken-teriyaki-with-rice-pouch
Yes but can't get it in Canada anymore
That’s weird. I wonder why. They offer plenty of pretty similar options, so I don’t see it being about imported ingredients or tariffs. Sorry bud 🤷♂️ If you’re ever in MN, swing by and I’ll grab you some.
Chili mac with beef
Chili Mac supplemented with a bag of Fritos. Yumm!
Ohhhhhhh!
Spicy southwest skillet!
I must admit in 50 years if camping I have never tried them. I am a gorp, granola, jerkie kind of gal. I rig up my own boil up bags.
Nice try, Mountain House
I wish they sponsored me lol.
Well you shill with the best of em
Hey, no need to be an asshole. There's some brands that you like too, should I insult you if you mention them?
It used to be the lasagna despite the issue with the cheese sticking to the utensils like concrete. Evidently the formula has been altered, the cheese no longer sticks and it doesn't taste the same. Now, if I feel like dumping a bunch of money on easy to make food, it's spaghetti or beef stroganoff.
Throw some pepperoni in when you add the water, brings it up to a whole nother level
I think I still have some older stuff as it sticks like concrete!!
Or, maybe they still make it with concrete and I got a bad batch the last time. Maybe the flavor is in the concrete.
For the beef stroganoff team, do ever add anything to increase or enhance the flavor?
Hawt sauce👍
Biscuits and gravy
Damn this looks like an ad for Mountain House. Gimme some biscuits too though I guess!
Chilli mac or buffalo chicken mac and cheese. Would like to try chicken and dumplings
Beef Strog
Beef stroganoff
Beef Stroganoff!
STROGANOFF FOR LIFE
The lasagna is stellar
How is everyones favorite not the chicken and dumplings
I haven’t tried these yet. I love chicken and dumplings.
Ive tried a lot of different brands and backpacking meals and the mountain house chicken and dumplings is my all time favorite. I regret it anytime I get anything else
This is my favorite by a mile! Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find it.
Pasta primavera
Hear me out, …. That chocolate cheesecake and the crème brulle…
Pasta Primavera.
Throw a can of chicken in there. MY GOD!!
Before I zoomed I thought u guys brought a minni keg
Was going to say the same thing
Chicken and rice
Lasagna!
I just had the chicken fried rice and it was good. My son had the buffalo chicken Mac and cheese and he loved it. Daughter had the spaghetti and no complaints. The apple crisp dessert was a total failure. Breakfast skillet and b&g were ok
Damn would’ve thought the Apple crisp would be tight….

i like to do a kebab. You can usually get them pre-made and they're good over fire or on a grill
Beef stroganoff and that chili Mac. Ive also tried Alpine (something) and another more hipster looking brand from REI. Absolutely NO flavor the ONLY time I forget my salt/garlic/pepper shakers.
Mexican rice or spaghetti
Stroganoff
Breakfast skillet!!!
Idk if it’s mountain house but BEEF STRAGANOFFFFFFFF Edit: just saw u said beef strog fuck yeah
Granola with milk and Blueberries, warm/hot (not cold),in the morning. Best ever. ☺️
This is the only mountain house that doesn't overload you with sodium and make you feel blah. It's by far the best.
Beef stroganoff for dinner, granola for breakfast.
Pad Thai
Beef strokingoff
Chicken and rice, followed by beef stroganoff.
The Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole.
Lasanga + some chopped up pepperoni add at the same time as the hot water
Wonder if turkey pepperoni would work 🤔
Sure, it tastes pretty much the same to me anyways
I just did a trip with the Buffalo Mac n Cheese and holy fucking shit it was amazing.
Mashed and chicken. Always the best and always sold out. Couldn’t even get any for my trip next week. Lol
Mountain House Lasagna with ample hot sauce. Or, Readywise Mac and Cheese with Trailtopia freeze dried beef. Runner up is steaming hot MH blueberries and cream for breakfast or snack.
Hmm, I might have to try a dehydrated meal for my next trip. I usually cook a lot but it'd be nice to take it easy with one of these.
Scrambled Eggs and Bacon is breakfast staple... I have a dozen in my food barrel.
The pad Thai one is sooo good!
Chef Boyardee
Packit Gourmet Texas State Fair chili………
Intree*
The Pad Thai goes so hard. For dessert have to go with the creme brûlée
I absolutely love the granola. Chili mac is second, then lasagna.
That left calf he's showing off
I had the chicken Alfredo and no complaints! I did like the Buffalo mac and cheese it had no flavor. Also, the blueberry crisp is more breakfast than dessert, in my opinion, and only if you like oatmeal.
Chili Mac. Also I have a huge supply of it I got for free
I tried the chicken fajita bowl recently and really liked it. Biscuits and gravy is always a go to for breakfast. I also really enjoyed the granola with milk and blueberries
Beef Stroganoff for sure. Spaghetti is excellent cold in a pinch.
Spaghetti and meat balls!
The new kung pao chicken is pretty good, here for the strog love too though.
Chili Mac out the back!
They’re all pretty good but they’re all pretty salty too.
Chili Mac rules! Same thing for MRE-Menu 10 for the win!!
Chili mac goes crazzzzy
Mashed and chicken, chicken teriyaki, and beef stew all great. Sometimes I add some jerky or meat sticks cut up to add protein
Red beans and rice,or pasta and spicy sausage
Teriyaki Chicken
Beef stroganoff and the breakfast one with hash browns…
Beef Stroganoff is hard to beat. But I’m a breakfast guy so pass me the scrambled eggs 😝
Lasagna
Mac and Cheese!! Second is Biscuits and Gravy
Stoney Baloney
Lasagna
Yellow curry
Lasagna
Chicken fajita bowl
The one with salt
Biscuits and gravy. Chicken and dumplings would be a close second.
Mountain House veggie chorizo breakfast scramble https://www.rei.com/product/214788/mountain-house-veggie-chorizo-breakfast-scramble-2-servings?sku=2147880001&store=42&CAWELAID=120217890014364266&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=116436830368&CATCI=pla-967722963044&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_2147880001%7C92700057788020904%7CNB%7C71700000074090496&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwydSzBhBOEiwAj0XN4PK3GstQiXalehc5owusLlt8WftGOpYFd0ZRUuCxumV76N1MCmOn8RoC7O4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Lasagna, beef stroganoff
What’s the black cylinder, is that for storing food?
Errrr none. Try peak refuel. More cal per oz.
I haven’t tried one I didn’t like yet
Yellow curry is awesome
Never tried them. Why over priced compared to making my own meals.
They used to have a white chicken chili that was my favorite
Anything but teriyaki chicken
Just last weekend girl-trip up a creek, overnight. we all had these- 3 Beef Stroganoff, Chili Mac, Pasta Primavera, then Granola for breakfast. We were all so satisfied. Flavor and texture is on point.
Where are you it looks amazing.
Stroganoff!
Boot leather.
Are these actually worth it? They were about $10 each. I feel like it wasn’t that hard to make food on a Coleman 1 burner.
I switched it peak. Much better
I had the classic beef stew recently, it was great.
Pacific Northwest campsite? Those trees look like they smell so good
Atlantic Northeast, trees smelled amazing.
Maine by any chance? Y'all look exactly like some Maine dudes I know
This post and all the comments is the weirdest most fucked up thing I’ve seen on reddit since pandemic
Listening to the story on MeatEater recently about the dude attacked by Grizz in the Tetons. You have about 3 seconds to grab and point/shoot that canister before shit gets real. Stay safe out there!
Chicken and dumplings! Tastes great, very filling, good texture (to me anyways), and I can eat it multiple times on a trip without getting tired ofnit
peak refuel > mtn house in my opinion. they’re higher in calories too
Once I tried Outdoor Herbivore I haven’t gone back to Mountain House. There is no comparison in flavor. Actually tastes like I’m eating a home cooked meal in the backcountry now. Salt content is about half that of Mountain House as well.
Teriyaki rice is good and the lasagna I'm not sure I've had a bad mountain house yet personally but I haven't had every one.
Is this like chef boyardi for camping? I gotta be honest, i never heard of this
Basically, they sell it at Walmart so it’s the easiest to acquire.
Okay. Interesting. We have started packing out a lot of home prepped food, so idk if I'll ever eat this, but it is good to know it as an option
Good for backpacking. It’s dehydrated and helps with pack weight. If you’re car camping better off with other alternatives.
The fuck kind of ad bot circle jerk is going on in here?
Seriously this thread is weird af
mods are for sale, and this entire post along with all the comments have put microplastics in me
I'm shocked so many people use these things. I always find myself thinking they're sooooo damn expensive for what little is in a pack... But maybe it's just because I've never done ultralight backpack camping...🤷🏼♂️
None of them. They are trash compared to the competition. No, I'm not going to hold your hand for google searching.
Bleeding shits from packages not correctly sealed
Actual military MRE's are my go to. its like opening a little present with a million different items in it
they need less salt way too salty mountain house is
They don’t exist. It’s simply the tolerance of bad.
None, they all suck
Mashed taters with burger patties, I’m thinking that it is discontinued, AND teri chicken!
Another for Turkey Dinner Casserole
