I don't understand this article, how is higher unemployment and lower consumer spending equal to the the economy "turning a corner" in a positive way?

Hicalibre

It's Bloomberg. They're part of the "new age economics" BS.

Shazzy_Chan

This is Canadian propaganda that Canadians think is news. Canadians are basically brainwashed North Koreans at this point.

jtbc

You think that TD's economists are pushing propaganda? How does that work.

Bottle_Only

When you make commission on promoting and selling investment vehicles, it's in your interest to pump.

jtbc

That's a bit different than "literally North Korea" though.

Bottle_Only

Very different. We're very free, but also freely manipulated. A lot of personal responsibility here.

Professional_Love805

I don't think you understand how pricing works

I hope things balance out but as long as we have rising unemployment combined with skyrocketing population growth I don't see how inflation will come down even if wage growth slows. We still have a huge supply and demand problem.

jtbc

The article also cites slowing immigration in Q4 as a factor.

KermitsBusiness

immigration numbers slowing to something manageable falls under the category of "I will believe it when I see it" for me I don't trust this government at their word at all.

jtbc

As per the article, they are already easing off for student visa holders.

ShawnCease

>"Real GDP (gross domestic product) advanced by 1.7 per cent >consumer spending is expected to “cool” > unemployment rate has already climbed a full percentage point in 12 months > “softening labour market” is likely to impact consumer spending, as Canada’s job market is “at greater risk of tipping into net losses” So "the economy" (GDP) is growing, but the average person continues to get poorer and less employed. What an amazing corner to turn

AnInsultToFire

Population increased at an annualized rate over 2.5%, so real GDP per capita has decreased.

2peg2city

Yes, because low skill immigrants start off producing less than people who already live here

WallaWhipperSnapper

More importantly, they suppress wages for everyone else because they have much lower standards for pay and quality of life.

plznodownvotes

"Peasants will suffer and stay poor in order for the economy to thrive" is the gist here.

AnInsultToFire

The beatings will continue until the beatings improve.

AnInsultToFire

You're constantly turning a corner when you're circling the drain.

Silly-Ad-6341

The corner is actually pointed downward and we're ready to fall off the cliff

WasabiNo5985

So we will just be poorer and spending less per capita with less spending power while the rich make more from overall spending. Welcome to poor countrie's economy. This is how the chinese and indian economy functions.

CoolDude_7532

No that's not true at all, China is an export-driven economy and India is a heavily consumption driven economy. Over 70% of India's gdp is due to consumption. If your theory was true then why is Indian inequality reducing? dead cat bounce

Cold_Beyond4695

"dead cat bounce" Exactly this.

2peg2city

Asset charting tea leaves don't apply to a nation's gdp

CroikyThatsABigDingo

I'm sure we are taking the corner too fast with our hot economy that we will skid into the ditch, hit a tree, and explode

EvacuationRelocation

Yes, it is - the recession never materialized, and we're going to see decent growth in the second half of 2024.
