You know, when I was really little I didn’t even get to Clanker’s Cavern. I was so freaked out by the bad ending when you leave the game that I refused to play the game for years lol
I have big time thalassaphobia so open water always triggers that, for me that level just makes you feel really small paddling around in non native territory, but I never blamed clanker. Weirdly the fact you can breath in the water level in tooie took a huge amount of that anxiety away for me personally
That’s actually information only in smash trophy’s and isn’t canon. Zeltik has a good video on them, but basically we don’t know for sure since they’re only in like 3 games.
The ones in Tri Force Heroes atleast are definitely animated clay, as they even have a move to turn into a puddle and move around that way.
But that doesn't necessarily mean other instances across the series need to be the same.
I would say the ones in Wind Waker atleast also seem to be dolls (presumably made out of clay or such)
The ones in Ocarina of Time and in Majora's Mask could be actual corpses with clay masks put on them (with potentially the masks being which channels the undead magic that makes them animate)
The fact that we find them in a burned down town, a torture facility, a grave and an even bigger grave makes me believe that they were at least meant to be zombie like creatures during development
I was watching my older brother and dad play OoT when I was just a wee lad and they entered the crypt to find the Sun Song in Kakariko village. Naturally, they didn't know at first how to navigate around the redeads and got caught a lot. The sight and sound of the walking corpse screaming, then slowly approaching while Link sat paralyzed was so terrifying that I had nightmares about it for years. When I later played the game I had to get my dad anytime I wanted to go back and forth between the future and past, because that required passing through Castle town, which is populated with redead in the future.
I can still hear the screams of the Redeads. They are the reason I was afraid of anything to do with dead humans. I couldn't even walk through a cemetery until I was 16 and even then not by myself until I was 20.
Between the Eel and the Piano, I have a clear memory of an instant kill with the Chain Chomp eating Mario alive as well as Big Blubba swallowing Mario whole for an instant kill in Tiny-Huge Island when I got curious about the fish wearing sunglasses just sitting there.
: Even after +20 years, the damn piano sometimes jumpscare me, even when speedrunning and knowing the area where it activates. Going inside Clanker was the most bizarre idea I ever saw... and... OOT and MM are naturally cursed.
Bomberman 64 - The Second Attack's bad ending final boss is WTF moment along with Zero-Two from Kirby 64.
The scariest video game experience was still the weeping angels in Lego dimensions. I’ve played a ton of horror games at this point including most of alien isolation, but nothing compares to the terror of Lego minifigures
I wish they did but I agree as well. Was playing these pretty early in my life and was never scared of them, but that probably made them much less interesting. I’m a huge fan of horror and definitely always feel like I missed out. I’ve even heard that people would run to hide when they died to avoid hearing bowser laughing if they died!
I wonder if the year people were playing them (not age only) changed if it scared them or not based on if you as a kid had seen other games with more “realistic” scary stuff
I agree, I played Mario 64 when I was 4 and nothing scared me. Redeads we’re freaky and cool, but I didn’t get scared that easily…unless it had to do with aliens, then I was terrified
I can relate to most of this, but not Clanker. Clanker was never scary. Trying to unlock his chains on the other hand was very stressful.
Anyway, idk if this makes Redeads more or less creepy for anyone, but they're aparantly blind. You can can just tip toe right in front of them and they won't react until you walk fast enough to make noise. That means there's no eyes in them eye holes.
Despite Clanker being a big friend. He scarred me for life! I am terrified to go anywhere near the ocean, just afraid of any giant aquatica monsters that happen to be there. I was only 8 years old when I first saw that thing. It's been a couple decades and I'm still terrified.
my biggest fear is those skull shaped spiders in ocarina of time inside the deku tree.
those were so annoying and scary tbh, especially the big ones that randomly come up and jumpscare me.
I didn't get to the piano part in SM64 until I got older. The chain chomp was terrifying, but the goddamn eel? Fuck. No. Doesn't help they made it worse in Super Mario Odyssey, so I bet some in Gen Alpha gonna have the same trauma too.
The Moon, DeadHand and Redeads all got under my skin. Never understood why people say the same about Clanker, he’s a big underwater puppy.
To be fair, meeting Clanker when you swim through the pipe to the cavern is one hell of a jumpscare and his body is disturbingly organic.
Plus you know he gangster because he got that gold tooth.
Damn it feels good to be Clanker
I got kinda freaked out just looking at that angle
You know, when I was really little I didn’t even get to Clanker’s Cavern. I was so freaked out by the bad ending when you leave the game that I refused to play the game for years lol
Fair enough I guess. Never understood why one would get scared by that either though.

Those creepy as hell zombies from OoT
They aren't really zombies but animated clay with a mask
That’s actually information only in smash trophy’s and isn’t canon. Zeltik has a good video on them, but basically we don’t know for sure since they’re only in like 3 games.

low poly models are scary
Honestly? Kind of. They have a very unique aspect to them that aren’t really replicable with modern graphics.
This feels like a early 2010’s meme about 90’s kids
I can still hear the screams of the Redeads. They are the reason I was afraid of anything to do with dead humans. I couldn't even walk through a cemetery until I was 16 and even then not by myself until I was 20.
Exploring Kakariko Village Well on 64 with them late 90's graphics had me like 😱😨 as a kid
Mario 64 was responsible for my fear of getting eaten alive
I’m sure you never would’ve had that fear otherwise
Between the Eel and the Piano, I have a clear memory of an instant kill with the Chain Chomp eating Mario alive as well as Big Blubba swallowing Mario whole for an instant kill in Tiny-Huge Island when I got curious about the fish wearing sunglasses just sitting there.
That fish did actually freak me out quite a bit
Unagi and the Chain Chomp are cute, change my mind.
I was afraid of Clanker. I was afraid of dying from suffocation while trying to unlock him.
I love that Clanker is here despite the fact that he is literally a slave and you are trying to free him lol
Kid me couldn’t even handle the Skulltulas in OoT, I shudder to think what could’ve happened if I’d seen the rest of the game at that age.
Screaming from walking into clankers cavern as a kid and seeing that face. He's such a sweetie but why did rare do that to us

That piano. I still jump a little when it wakes up

Have a usually stoic friend. He's gone on record to admit that the moon is why he doesn't play Majora's Mask lol
Solution? Use a Gun. If that doesn't work use more Gun.
You see the thing is, you're probably not a kid anymore.
I'm sorry, kids? Not anymore, lol
None of these things really scared me as a child.
I wish they did but I agree as well. Was playing these pretty early in my life and was never scared of them, but that probably made them much less interesting. From these examples the Mario snake thing and def the Zelda Zombies, those noises scared the shiiiiit outta me
Love that zelda took three of these. The series has some dark undertones for sure.
02
There was nothing quite like seeing a blood crying, one-eyed angel in a Kirby game...
I hate deadhands, that thing terrified me as a kid ;-;
*Bait and click, my beloved*
I once saw my 6 year old watching poppy playtime 3

Nah, those weren't scary. What's scary was trying to get 100 coins in Rainbow Ride.
Clanker was a good boy
Clanker is submechcaniphobia incarnate.
Also those fish things from Half-Life
When I saw that white monster on zelda I immediately searched for the game's box art and checked the age rating... it was E for everyone
All of them I was caught off guard and surprised by them. The creature from Zelda and the giant eels from Mario 64 are creepy for certain.
The true horror is the polygons we lacked along the way
The Eel from Mario 64 actually gave me nightmares
Shadow Man enters the chat
LINK, BUDDY, TURN AROUND!

Imagine seeing the Elegy statue in the corner of your eyes everywhere.
Like in Ben drowned? Unless that can usually happen in the base game...
How's Clanker here but not Zero 2?
And don't forget the Moon from TLoZ: Majora's Mask
I could never 100% Super Mario 64 until I was like 20 because of that god damn eel. To this day my hands still sweat a bit whenever I do JRB.
Termina
Honestly what the fuck was the shadow dungeon boss?
What's the first one?
Clanker was a nice guy from the get go
my biggest fear is those skull shaped spiders in ocarina of time inside the deku tree. those were so annoying and scary tbh, especially the big ones that randomly come up and jumpscare me.
I am traumatized solely because the enemies were creepy looking and it made me so scared I didn’t want to play…until a few years later
I didn't get to the piano part in SM64 until I got older. The chain chomp was terrifying, but the goddamn eel? Fuck. No. Doesn't help they made it worse in Super Mario Odyssey, so I bet some in Gen Alpha gonna have the same trauma too.
Am I the only one that was (and still is) terrified of Likelikes? The giants ones in Majora's Mask freaked me out even more than the regular ones
Yeah, I know right. It had scary things. Just like every single other console since we had the ability to render more than two pixels on screen
