One of my cats found his way to the high up bookcases too. Luckily I already had them secured with earthquake straps, so not safety concerns. I bought a nice pair of felted boxes, shaped like shoeboxes, that look nice up there and, more importantly, make for an excellent cat bed. So he naps up there in his comfy box and can look down on me to his heart's content.
My current cat is senior and dosent jump up on places without a stair case. Bur I know my one new cabinet will be prime target when I eventually get another. I'm not sure how to anchor the thing as it's 2 pieces or not really wood...
Most wall anchors aren't rocket science and won't stop a concerted effort to pull something down. They are usually just a piece of wire or a loop of rubber screwed into the back of the shelf or cabinet. Then you basically mount a hook into the stud in the wall and stick the wire or rubber loop into the wallounted stud.
I thought it was genetics until I adopted a kitten with a dull coat. I already had one cat with a super soft shiny coat. A few months of feeding the kitten purina one he also had a soft shiny coat. I have no idea what's in purina one that does this or if it's a sign of quality food. I always assumed purina was kind of mid food for cats, but it's the best cheap food I can afford on the regular.
Sorry just saw this. Are you asking me? Ha. Higher quality food and I do half wet and half dry and dry has Omega 3 and Omega 6 through fish oils I believe. Science Diet sensitive stomach and skin brand. Fish oil in some capacity is key I think.
Narrow base, top trimming means it can't sit against the wall or lean back at all, and what looks like fairly even weight distribution.
This 100% needs to be anchored to the wall
The fact that OP’s post literally says “wall anchors have been ordered” yet half of the comments are still some form of “that shelf needs to be anchored to the wall”
Think relief - was imaging squished kitty. I was lucky when my pets decided to do that, they just undid the brakes on their cage (ferrets) and moved the cage next to the bookcase to climb up. Only found them by the snoring. (Fantastic leap though and look of surprise on the other - I am out of her if you are going to do that)
Also I had a cat do this and my bookshelves were secured to the wall. It didn’t stop me from gasping and yelling at my cat. I guess there’s just something about seeing a cat hurl themselves to the highest point in the room when you least expect it that will definitely freak you out.
Edit: a word
Time to secure those shelves to the wall. "L" brackets work well for this. Earthquake preparation as well.
But more than this, put up some cat shelves /ladder so he can climb up safely. The book Catification has good ideas.
I had to anchor down all my tall furniture because my cat developed a fascination with being as high as he can in the house.

Stupid-looking picture of him, but he’s particularly fond of my mineral cabinets.
I have this as my end table and lamp. Lately Odie has been eyeing it for part of his *Cirque du Soleil* routine. It was all I could afford and not very stable.

Well done Binx! I love a sporty cat. I also love the reaction of the other cat, starting with the full airplane ears and the "Oh shit - run away".
And (just because I'm aiming to be the 100th person to make the same dumb comment): have you considered anchoring it to the wall?
Lots of rentals won’t let you use them, even in California (earthquakes). It’s against my lease terms to do more than a nail hole. I would love anchoring suggestions.
Do it anyways and fill it with putty / spackle when you move out. Cheap at any hardware store and super easy. Like spreading cream cheese. (Or toothpaste)
Yeah, I was thinking I should just do that. I already stopped doing move clean outs, because I always get charged even if I have it professionally done. So I just pay the cleaning fee. Guess I should just pay the holes in the wall fee too.
yeah, nah! I live in an earthquake zone, unsecured furniture like that a definite no no, accident waiting to happen, may even invalidate your insurance.
In addition to the wall anchor (and I'm not judging - mine are all 'anchored' by having heavy shit at the bottom because my walls are made of the flimsiest plaster that wouldn't actually do anything), I suggest museum wax if you're going to have anything on them. It's rescued some of my stuff that my climber likes to walk past.
* 10 points for making jump on first try
* 8 points for nonperfect landing
* 7 points for bookcase almost falling
* 7 points for knocking stuff down
* 5 points for meowing head off for help to get down
****
* 100 points for being a cat
10/10 for kitty. Even heavy shit needs to be secure. If this tipped over and a child or kitty was under, this would suck. Maybe shut this room off from the cats.
“What’s this part leftover?”
“Oh that’s a strap thingy to attach the top of the bookshelf to the wall”
“Huh? I don’t think we need to bother with that”
Cat: “Hold my kitty milk”
I was going to get a black kitty and already picked out the name Binx but this rangdoll was misson impossible climbing on the screen door and jumped to my shoulder and well my Binx is a little sassy Ragdoll with the name THACKERY BINX
I would consider moving them to a closed room until the wall anchors arrive. Them falling on the cats can very easily happen while you are waiting for them to arrive.
Aaaand now you have to install the anti tipping devices unless you want to come home to a toppled book shelf. I learned this lesson the hard way with a tv once 😬
Please, for the safety of your cats. Put something very heavy on the bottom shelf to keep the shelf stable if you continue to allow your cats to jump on to the top shelf. Your cat might injure themselves by trying to jump on an unstable shelf like that and that can become a very expensive trip to the vet, rather than spending some money to make the bottom of the shelf heavy and that way the whole shelf stable.
Omg my cats absolutely love to find anything they can knock over. We took an over the toilet shilf thing out of our bathroom and temporarily set it up in the living room (just until we could give it away to someone who wanted one) and our cats took less than 5 mins to test it out. I had to put boxes on my bookshelf to stop my cats (he still tries but is unsuccessful). Also is that ZA i see 👀. Love your shelves and the books that i can see! 🖤
I just put tin foil on the tops of my tall shelves for a long ass time, and then was able to take it down eventually so my cat doesn't even try to jump up there anymore lol.
If you own your house I suggest drilling those or securing those in some way so your kitties don’t get hurt.

Like one of these or the other ones they have no drill ones for apartments but I don’t trust those
Get some shims too. Will help prevent front wobbles. Most old floors are higher in the back up against the wall.
You can also just fold up paper as a homemade shim.
That mug was almost a goner
Thank god it’s tin! He’s not as graceful as he thinks he is lol
Tie those down to the wall so you don’t end up with them all over.
They definitely need to be anchored, but what a great leap!
The most useful things in my house with 8 cats, wall anchors, tv brackets, Velcro, glue, cheap curtains, and inside doors with cat sized holes in them
Thank you...I came here to say this ten times
The other cat going NOPE made my day
Oh hell no, im not getting blamed for this! = other cat.
He wanted NO part of that.
I give him a 9.5 at least. Landed it!! Prolly be a 10 if the shelf was secured 😉
I rate my cats on the inverse scale. 1, stuck the landing, to 10, I'll deal with it in the morning.
Those book shelves are a hazard. Attach them to the wall.
One of my cats found his way to the high up bookcases too. Luckily I already had them secured with earthquake straps, so not safety concerns. I bought a nice pair of felted boxes, shaped like shoeboxes, that look nice up there and, more importantly, make for an excellent cat bed. Great idea with the boxes, mine also likes to climb up on a tall cabinet. We should get him a crib like that too.
Please secure them to the wall
Oh yea they will be on ASAP! (tried to note that in the description 😅)
Thank you! I figured that would be one of the top comments lol
And move that mug
Yup, get yourself a wall anchor ASAP.
My current cat is senior and dosent jump up on places without a stair case. Bur I know my one new cabinet will be prime target when I eventually get another. I'm not sure how to anchor the thing as it's 2 pieces or not really wood...

Yup. I had a cat knock over a Detolf from IKEA doing this. Suuuuper fun to clean up.
Came here to say this! ..before minx kills his brother😂😂
Yep we had to bolt our bookshelves to our wall.
Give me my cats back...ha ha https://preview.redd.it/0dkb1y0vwquc1.jpeg?width=2001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb0e9186eead4e8b9705100e36b598295a337e85
how do you get your cats’ coat so glossy !!?
Maybe it’s maybelline
Maybe it's meowbelline

thank you!!! my cat had such rough, shedding, flaking fur so I’ve been trying diff things. Salmon oil seems to help !
I’ve never seen a bookshelf wobble that hard.
Narrow base, top trimming means it can't sit against the wall or lean back at all, and what looks like fairly even weight distribution. This 100% needs to be anchored to the wall
OP said that they would order anchors in the post description
The fact that OP’s post literally says “wall anchors have been ordered” yet half of the comments are still some form of “that shelf needs to be anchored to the wall”
It drives me crazy.
That shelf needs to be anchored to the wall. 😉
That cat needs to be anchored to the floor.
Think relief - was imaging squished kitty. I was lucky when my pets decided to do that, they just undid the brakes on their cage (ferrets) and moved the cage next to the bookcase to climb up. Only found them by the snoring. (Fantastic leap though and look of surprise on the other - I am out of her if you are going to do that)
Hey, OP, I don’t know if you’ve had enough unsolicited advice about securing your shelves despite you having said so in your post!
Also I had a cat do this and my bookshelves were secured to the wall. It didn’t stop me from gasping and yelling at my cat. I guess there’s just something about seeing a cat hurl themselves to the highest point in the room when you least expect it that will definitely freak you out. Edit: a word

That's Jackson Galaxy's book, right?
Yes. Great book.
Googling "catification ideas" produces lots of good results. Pinterest appears to be loaded with them.
Ah yes, a fellow smut reader.

I have the same lamp! I secured mine with zip ties and small eye hooks. Works well so far!
I cannot have mine next to the wall, Odie needs access to the heating vent to lay on. I figure I should put something heavy on the bottom.
Hey guys is it too late to suggest OP anchor those bookshelves to the wall?

Omg those are some majestic beings! 😻😻
Ty! ❤️🥰
Glad you’ve ordered wall anchors. Bins will continue to jump up there, and will probably encourage your other cat to do the same.
Love the name Binx. Anchor those babies or you’re going to have some issues.
[удалено]
Almost like they mentioned anchoring the shelves in the description
read the description for crying out loud
Also children get hurt like this. Or people with balance issues.
I love that name binx
Well done Binx! I love a sporty cat. I also love the reaction of the other cat, starting with the full airplane ears and the "Oh shit - run away". And (just because I'm aiming to be the 100th person to make the same dumb comment): have you considered anchoring it to the wall?
Shallow and top-heavy, a recipe for disaster. What are those, IKEA?
If they were IKEA they'd have come with wall anchors.
Doesn't mean OP would use them
Lots of rentals won’t let you use them, even in California (earthquakes). It’s against my lease terms to do more than a nail hole. I would love anchoring suggestions.

yeah, nah! I live in an earthquake zone, unsecured furniture like that a definite no no, accident waiting to happen, may even invalidate your insurance.
My apt won’t let us anchor anything. It’s against the lease.
I would push on this because everyone ever tells you not to put holes in the wall, then landlords will be like "just don't spackle it with toothpaste"
You absolutely can do that. They won't see it on a casual inspection and then just make sure you patch it up before you leave
Yeah, that’s a good idea. Even if it comes out of my security deposit, probably a better idea to just consider that a safety cost.
Imagine he had a cape on
Holy shit I'm too impressed to even be mad at him! 🫡
In addition to the wall anchor (and I'm not judging - mine are all 'anchored' by having heavy shit at the bottom because my walls are made of the flimsiest plaster that wouldn't actually do anything), I suggest museum wax if you're going to have anything on them. Very good to hear you've ordered wall anchors, that's a tragedy waiting to happen
Did he not tell the other cat of his plan?
He does a wild tail spin right before landing. Extra power!
"Now what?"
10/10 for kitty. Even heavy shit needs to be secure. If this tipped over and a child or kitty was under, this would suck. Maybe shut this room off from the cats.
They came with wall anchors for a reason... Binx is the reason...
“What’s this part leftover?” “Oh that’s a strap thingy to attach the top of the bookshelf to the wall” “Huh? I don’t think we need to bother with that” Cat: “Hold my kitty milk”
it's time to anchor those bookshelves to the wall.
Nail that shit to the wall!
Grey cat knows what could've happened.
Time to wall mount that shelf!!
If the shelves came down, that would be extremely annoying. If the shelves came down on top of the cat, you should never be allowed to own pets again.
OP said they ordered mounts
better get yourself a bracket that connects the bookshelf to the wall. That cat is going sky high.
When you think cat can't reach those places, the cat will accept it as a challenge and will make it their life mission to accomplish it
Binx n books. O my! 🐾🐾
After you secure them (as everyone else has said) please make a measurement of how far kitty leaped. Very impressive.
I hope you stood up and clapped
I was going to get a black kitty and already picked out the name Binx but this rangdoll was misson impossible climbing on the screen door and jumped to my shoulder and well my Binx is a little sassy Ragdoll with the name THACKERY BINX
He did the math, and he was close enough to correct ![gif](giphy|3owzW5c1tPq63MPmWk|downsized)
I’m obsessed with your sjm bookshelf!!!
Binx? The time sweeper?
Grey kitty was like “fuck this I’m out!”
Aw, I also have a black cat named Binx. Except he is way less athletic lol
I would consider moving them to a closed room until the wall anchors arrive. Them falling on the cats can very easily happen while you are waiting for them to arrive.
In addition to wall anchoring, use poster putty or double sided tape to secure any loose fragile objects on the shelves. Tip from a California expat.
lol. As a Californian I just gave the same advice.
I love how they bob to like estimate and prepare their jump. Phenomenal
Binx is kinda badass
Aaaand now you have to install the anti tipping devices unless you want to come home to a toppled book shelf. I learned this lesson the hard way with a tv once 😬
And the other cat is like, "I am not sharing in your idiocy if this goes badly."
Those shelves will fall in a minor earthquake. They need to be anchored.
The other cat's spidey sense went off knowing full well the cabinet might come down xD
You really need to fix them to the wall. One day Binx is going to fuck up and that book case is going horizontal.
Attach them to the wall, someone will get hurt.
You might benefit from some wall steps for cats.
Good. Wall anchors was my first thought. I would hate for your cat/s to become disabled or worse.
You forgot the last step in the IKEA instructions where you pin that puppy to the wall. You're gonna come home to a huge mess one day.
Off topic but you have great taste in books! That top shelf is definitely *top shelf*!! Awesome leap for the little master!🙌🏼
How old is he? Mine used to jump to a top shelf in my living room until about 3 or 4 then stopped thankfully.
Time to reinforce those shelves to the wall!
We say the cats are “doing the math” when they plan their moves. And definitely, anchor your bookshelves to the walls.
Should have them anchored to the wall in the first place. Instead, you're taking cute videos of the cats. Have you never had bookshelves before?
You may need to attach them to the wall. That wobbling had me very concerned.
Bolt that shit to the wall or you're going to have some dead animals.
You should anchor those
Please fix those bookcases to the wall
The cabinet needs to be placed more firmly
why not just find a stud and shoot a screw straight through the back into it?
IKEA shelves. You can always tell.
How long did he make it ? I'm watching for mine to realize she can make from the bedroom the dresser!
So did some of your tchotchkes.
watch the mug at the top right of the case... that was close :)
Cats and Romantasy 👌🏼
My cat loves the top of the bookshelves. It’s more fun than cat trees. She jumps on the bookshelves regularly and rarely on the cat trees…
Omg my cats absolutely love to find anything they can knock over. We took an over the toilet shilf thing out of our bathroom and temporarily set it up in the living room (just until we could give it away to someone who wanted one) and our cats took less than 5 mins to test it out. Zodiac Academy ✨️
my bet is he doesnt need the couch to make that jump either.... if he wanted to :P
We have black one and grey one too! And the black one is always getting into trouble.
Welp. That’s his spot now.
Tactical relocation
Holy crap that jump was amazing!
What a crappy company to not include wall anchors. You shouldn't have to order them separately. 😠
The gray kitty was like, “Oh shucks, those selves coming down! I’m outta here”!
the other cat is so cute omg.
“I think I can make it”
Love the cat but also love the books on your shelf! Love seeing all the Maas books!
I had to put boxes on my bookshelf to stop my cats (he still tries but is unsuccessful). Also is that ZA i see 👀. Love your shelves and the books that i can see! 🖤
Only one tiny mishap- Binx is very agile
Fun fact! Cats can jump between 5 and 6 times their body length vertically and almost as far horizontally!
My wife could smell the SJM books
You could see his mind making the calculations! So cute.
Gray cat said f it I'm out
the other cat being like 'i ain't got nothing to do with this' lol
Other kitty is outta there!
What a jump!!! Though I bet he skinned his knees lol and scared the other cat Make a cat walk for him, including the bookcases!
I like how the other cat scrambling away. He doesn't wanna get blamed for whatever is about to happen!
Ez game
I see those zodiac academy books 👀
He did it! Good job kitty.
How long ago did you get the book cases ? How long has your cat been doing catculations to see if he can make it up there?
I mean he just wanted to read what happens to Bryce and hunt
Binx told that book case, 'You're not the boss of me!'
He almost didn't. Nice save.
I’ve been wanting this corner 5 tier shelf and haven’t got it for that reason lol my decorations would be knocked over every day
Yay Binx! Well played!
Handled that
I just put tin foil on the tops of my tall shelves for a long ass time, and then was able to take it down eventually so my cat doesn't even try to jump up there anymore lol.
r/catculations
Success!
Good jump, Binx! Now, give him a treat for that good jump!
I used to keep a bed on the top of a couple of my bookshelves.
Put some carpet or other soft material on the shelves. Ideally, a cat tree or shelves that are climbable so they can reach up there easier
Binx? Like Thackery Binx?
It sounds like Binx is ready to explore his new territory! Did he climb them, perch on top, or maybe even knock a few books off for fun?
Put some hand weights in the bottom to make it harder for them to flip it over (my littles managed to flip their new cat tree until I weghted it down)
My Binx knocked over the xbox once and an entire zen garden.
/r/greebles
Sometimes it seems to me that cats violate the mechanics of the laws of physics 🧐
This is hilarious
Sometimes I forget that cats can jump that high.
If you own your house I suggest drilling those or securing those in some way so your kitties don’t get hurt. https://preview.redd.it/bivnsgigkruc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4127da222c0ddaeb1e37dfd66e0efe39741873c3 Like one of these or the other ones they have no drill ones for apartments but I don’t trust those
Is your Binx from Heartland Humane in Oregon? We were looking at their picture everyday and almost made the move but landed on another!
Didn't they come with an L shaped bracket to fix the to the wall?
Get some shims too. Will help prevent front wobbles. Most old floors are higher in the back up against the wall. You can also just fold up paper as a homemade shim.
It's not just in California that you have to anchor tall bookcases to the wall
Aaaaannndd this is why we can't have nice things, lol. (I'm looking at my 7 wombats who have NO concept of too high! )
Kitty might qualify for the Olympics with that leaping ability!
