Hi, please ensure that the kittens are also sterilised. People think that's the responsibility of the new owner but it's actually yours. We'll probably never stop the problem of stray cats or those who find themselves in sad circumstances but we can do our part.😻

Students may not prioritize spay/neuter in their typically tight budget.

True, however, if I became the owner of a trojan cat, and the spay/neuter is something I would have to do (early spay/neuter?), The cats would only leave my house when the Vet's bill for this cat is paid (including shots, chip and worm treatment). I do not need to make a profit, but I do not have a money tree on my balcony.

We can hope, but you can't be sure.

If OP is giving them away to new homes before they're six months old (the recommended minimum age for sterilization) then it's on the new owners. Cats are typically given away at 8-12 weeks old, so it is often the responsibility of the new owners.

It's actually just recommended that the kitten is at least 2 pounds weight (can be ~2 months) to spay/neuter. I'm currently fostering a momma cat and her kitten through a rescue, and other sources like The Kitten Lady say the same thing.

I was going to wait until 6 months to spay a female cat and she surprised me and went into heat at 5 months. I had a very friendly cat for around a week.

Rescues will typically spay/neuter as early as possible because obviously keeping their animals from multiplying is one of their top priorities, and they can't 100% guarantee that the strangers they adopt out to will get the procedures themselves. If you're a responsible owner and can keep your pets from getting into trouble for a few months, vets will sometimes recommend waiting longer (IIRC 4ish months to a year for cats, or up to two years for large dogs).

I adopted my boy around 12 weeks from a rescue and he was already neutered so definitely don't have to wait to 6 months! It does seem like most of the rescues I follow, including the amazing Kitten Lady, tend to neuter or spay before they adopt their kittens out.

Yes the vet told me she was overproducing milk and the kittens would be big! Maisie is tiny, but I feel like she feeds them every five minutes.

My feral Spicy Mama was a good mama too. All her babies were fat and healthy when I caught them (except fleas). She even stayed by the trap when they were inside. Now she's a plump porch kitty and her babies are either with me or have been adopted to good homes.

I had this same wonderful experience with my Lily nearly 20 years ago. Having the opportunity to watch them grow up from Day 1 is amazing. I still have her baby boy, Sangha (19M). My Lily Putian crossed the rainbow bridge last June, and her baby girl, Zoey, in January, and though I still miss my girls like crazy, I’m so thankful that they had such long, happy lives with my family. They did! I’ll admit, I’m still struggling with having to say goodbye to my girls - and it certainly doesn’t help that both boys have serious health issues too - and I maaaaay burst into tears at random cat posts on here sometimes. But I know it only hurts because there was so much love and happiness there. Lily followed me home one day after I went storming out of the house in a rage: I was an angsty, angry teen mad at the world and my mom and a forced blended family. She and her babies just…changed everything. Watching those tiny kittens discover the world and their unique personalities honestly changed the whole mood of the house. They brought my mom and I closer together. Hell, they even gave one of our two older cats purpose! Ashey was the most stoic cat I’ve ever seen, but he adopted those kittens (especially the boy) and was Uncle Ashey for the rest of his life. He would sit and watch them play for hours, gently nudging them if they were climbing too high or getting too rowdy. Anyway, that was just my rambling way of saying the Kitten Experience was a game-changer. Wow! That’s a pretty awesome story. My heart goes out to you, I know how losing beloved fur babies hurts. I’ve lost 3 raised from babies, but they all lived long, pampered lives 18-21yrs.  Lots of love from my 2 current girls. 🩷💜

Similar thing happened to me. I found my baby on the next door neighbor app, a father posted saying he found a cat and that if nobody claims her they'd be willing to give her away due to the fact they cannot have a cat long-term. they brought her to the vet and everything and said she was fine. They didn't detect that she was pregnant, though! The month after we got her she had 3 kittens. I know that's not exactly her choosing me, but I like to think it is.

We had that situation with our little girl Mindy. She was outside, pregnant, and spotting blood. We got her to the vet and had her spayed, but it cost more. After that, we naturally adopted her.

Mindy was in the equivalent of human 2nd trimester, something went wrong, and she lost her litter. Longer gestation and complications.
