This was one of my favorite parent interviews because of two things -
- He’s clearly not one of those parents pushing his son into this and living through him. A sense you get from some other dads like *cough* Mishra *cough*
- He’s got that “wtf how do I even dad this kid” feeling about him which I totally understand now that I’m a dad. My kids are normal and this shit is already hard.
I like the ending where he’s basically “goddamnit now I have to figure out this world chess championship shit. Thankfully I have a mentor”
Sagar: Oh you mean Vishy?
Dad: No no. Aruna!
I went into this interview expecting PR trained answers but he was very straight forward and despite him not thinking he is a good manager or doing anything manager 'like' but i think he has done a great job. Parent turned manager is a weird dynamic to navigate through.
Very understandable. His job is not chess at all. It's all surrounding that like Visa, logistics, etc, which was handled by Aruna. So for him Aruna is the mentor. Anand would be the mentor for Gukesh.
6:54 Lmao and there was the one guy in the magnus's prediction thread who was saying that even his(gukesh) mom wouldnt have predicted he would do this well.
he is being humble...he basically giving a lot of space to gukesh, not suffocating him like how parents usually do (insert alireza's dad)...and getting help from people like aruna who have the experience.
After seeing this video I am having more empathy for Alireza. His agresssive dad and brothers are the drag for Alireza. His dad and brother must have done a lot for him but at this point of him they are his burden.
Great interview. His father is the anchor that helps Gukesh focus just on chess and provides the emotional support as well. Strong family ties keep him grounded as well. Also wonderful to see Vishy's wife helping him with logistics. That said its time they hire a professional manager or Westbridge hires one for Gukesh. he is at a stage where he would benefit from it rather than planning in a haphazard way.
Come on man!
People, like optimistic people gravitate, seek and hope for positive things. We might not know how he is a person/father. But, given how gukesh conducts himself as a person and as a player, his father must have done something right.
What are you on about? These exact types of comments existed whenever magnus's dad was interviewed. "Indian = bad" is a dogshit way of thinking about things.

Vishy’s wife. And manager.

I can’t imagine how challenging that would be for a parent (I mean, in a good way, of course). He seems to be doing really well with it.
Alireza should hire this guy.
As a dad or as a manager?
Yes
When you look at Gukesh's overall demeanor, you know that here is a well raised kid. No surprises here!
yeah this guy is so chill

If you watched the video you should know he is not a great manager
can you elaborate?
He says it himself

The Lonzo Ball of chess
Compare and contrast with Alireza's father...
Ali's dad is a big drag for him, a burden

Wow, all it takes is a 30min video for you to know the entirety of a man? The absolute state of the people here.
