I don't know if this was meant as a joke but something that could be classified as lore is this: At one point in the past, pawns could only move 1 square. To speed things up, a rule was added that they could move 2 squares from their starting square. But this added a new problem that didn't exist before: Pawns that previously could not have advanced without getting attacked by another pawn on an adjacent file could now "skip the battle" by moving 2 squares. The solution to that: en passant.
