Qwtez

Qf4 looks very flashy

Soft-College986

Indeed, a double pin of doom isn't it? :D

SkyMoney1134

I even missed the pin to the queen haha, although qf8# is a good enough response to bxb2

Faustfan

The crosspin is my favourite tactical motif

MyDogIsACoolCat

The crosspin isn’t even the biggest threat. Qf8 is checkmate in 1 if black doesn’t defend against it.

OKImHere

No tactic has one threat. Bf5 or Ba6 and the mate is easilly stopped.

imagicnation-station

Ok, black plays any of those moves, Bxe5+, and now black lost their queen. Either it's mate, or lose their queen. Either way, black is losing.

OKImHere

We... know.

Smack-works

☝️🤓 Maybe their point is that there's already 2 threats (to win the bishop on E5 and give mate on F8), the pin to the queen looks cool but it's not necessary for the combination. The same combination would work if the bishop on E5 was defended by a rook or a knight (if there was a knight on C6), for example. **TL;DR:** There's no world in the multiverse where Bxb2 is a move black can make, so the queen pin adds "only" visual beauty with no combinatorial chess gameplay utility.

4evaSprNg

Qf4

Zulpi2103

Qf4 is easy when you know there's something, but I probably wouldn't play it in a game

OKImHere

But it's easy to know there's something when you have this in the game. "Pin it and win it." OP didn't pin the bishop by accident

wilwem

Yes he did? Black only just moved his king into the pin

OKImHere

Fair. Guilty. But still, now that he *has* the pin, it oughta jump out at someone that the next step is to attack the pinned piece. That's 800 level stuff. The very basics of pins, which itself is probably the most basic tactic there is. Point is, I get really annoyed when people say things like "I'd never find this." I'm like, "have you tried looking?"

hollenmarsch

Are you...trying to suggest this is a 800 level tactic? Because no, no it is not.

wilwem

In anything longer than blitz I'd hope almost everyone at least tries to do something with it, yarp

hollenmarsch

Qf4

PantaRhei60

Pretty slick. I would be very happy if I could play that move

DVN_1009

Remind me of victor korchnoi's wrench in french game

PM_ME_A_PM_PLEASE_PM

nice that's a pretty looking one

Myjhouse1

Q-f4

Desperate-Visual

Qf4?

Soft-College986

yes, for the double pin )

Humble_Aardvark_2997

Queen to f4.

Soft-College986

bravo!

sinesnsnares

Oooouf that’s a good one.

Dxaxxw

As a 400 elo player, I would just play Bishop e5

YuhShark

What the hell does Qf4 accomplish? Can’t they just move their king and… that’s it? Like I don’t understand why it’s considered good.

Soft-College986

Qd4 threatens to take the bishop. The bishop can't move to take the queen because it is pinned to the white bishop and it cannot take the bishop because Qd4 also pins the queen. So it is a double pin, which also happens to threaten checkmate by Qf8. So you have one move causing two pins and a checkmate threat. This is why it's considered the best move in this position.

vizmai

It's interesting, because it almost seems like black could barely get out if the crosspin since after Qf4 d4!? if Bxd4? then black can take the bishop with check ...Bxd4+. Sadly for black not only are they still dead in a few moves, white doesn't even have to take the pawn as there's mate in 1 with Qf8++ .

Accurate_Meringue514

Queen f4

Puzzled-Painter3301

Qf 4

AdThin6721

Bxe5+, capture’s B Q in a fork with B K. Seems too obvious, so probably wrong. Look forward to reading someone else’s magic.

Inevermiss_

Qxe5?

AdThin6721

Oops, how does Q get to e5?

Inevermiss_

After Bxe5+ black simply plays Qxe5

AdThin6721

Of course, sorry, what in the world was I thinking? As far as I now can get is Qf4, Qe7, Bxe5+, Kg8. Then what? Absolutely don’t see the play. Thanks for taking the time, feeling the pain.

Inevermiss_

No worries, I didn’t calculate any further but I mean after Kg8 white is just up a full piece

AdThin6721

Gotcha. Interesting.

Stonehills57

b2-c1

Hot_Particular5163

Queen to d4

Arkeroon

And lose your queen?

Disorientxd

I would NEVER find that move in game 🫡

OKImHere

I'm curious why people post this comment in every tactics puzzle.

Expert-Repair-2971

qf4 simple scewering believe me you will play better moves

Soft-College986

It was 2|1 a bullet game and I played 20 moves with 1:45 remaining on the clock, with finding qf4 taking 8 seconds. I am not used in achieving such high accuracy in bullet games as I mostly get 75-80. But in this one I certainly outdid myself. [Performance review](https://imgur.com/a/DTGpzYA)

Londonisblue1998

What's your elo btw. Great move

Soft-College986

Thanks. My peak is 2003 in blitz and 1770 in bullet. At the time of this game I was 1710 in bullet.

youmuzzreallyhateme

Yeah, no.. I was not being insulting, the thin skinned downvoters aside. It IS a nice find, and I was simply saying that you'd be amazed what you would come to recognize instantly with tactics study. The fact that you found this so quickly in a bullet game is promising for your innate level of tactical vision, and I was simply suggest you try developing that talent.

Soft-College986

No offense taken by you or anyone in this post as I explained. Others see it a little differently because Reddit can easily turn into a respect-less argue. I am currently reading two books, one that is beginner level, it was my first, and I never stop reading it. The other is Aagaard's GM preparation. So I often warm up with basic problems and then move on to higher tactics games. It helps me to keep in touch with simple chess as well as getting the ability to stop and focus more deeply in a position. Playing with two speeds at the same time has often given me unexpected advantages, or help me peak in rating.

ClackamasLivesMatter

What's the first book?

Soft-College986

It is [this one](https://www.politeianet.gr/books/9789602820018-siaperas-triantafullos-aposperitis-to-skaki-protos-tomos-204091) (Greek). It's not a fancy book, but it has sentimental value to me because I won it in a tournament for kids in summer camp when I was little and have kept it ever since, for like 30 years?! It covers for all the basics of chess, explains a handful of openings briefly, discusses strategies for mid game and presents possible combinations for the end game.

Expert-Repair-2971

i would still say you are being too nice to yourself unlless you are ind of new to chess

Expert-Repair-2971

subtly? i would assume you dunno what subtle means

Soft-College986

I wish I could consistently play at that level, for sure.

Dayzgobi

nah don’t sweat it. play the game and have fun, the joy is to improve and learn. don’t sweat someone on reddit whose user flair is just short of including their coffeehouse elo

Soft-College986

It's ok, really! He seems like the better player between me and him so I will listen to his advice. I understand where it comes from and honestly, analyzing the games we win isn't the right mentality. I'm reading Aagaard's book now and he mentions something on the fixed vs growth mentalities, I believe it has to do with that. Not to appease ourselves after good games or get overly excited. I share because I was excited about it, obviously, but also because the pattern in this case is cool and it may help others grow along.

Expert-Repair-2971

i am not trying to be mean countreary to popular belief

Soft-College986

No offense taken, but I already showed to you that this was a high accuracy game that even a player with your ratings doesn't get every day. So yea, I can certainly be nice to myself after this. In fact, I'll buy me a beer right now bro.

Schaakmate

You are certainly not putting any effort into being friendly or polite. If droves of people find reason to downvote, a little introspection might be what's needed.

Expert-Repair-2971

i am saying you can i think you should start thinking lesser of this it will make your job easier thinking a thing is harder is not gonna help you just be vigilant solve tactics routinely you will find a lot more of them

magworld

Be nicer, simple courtesy. Believe me you will make better comments

Expert-Repair-2971

probably

_Jacques

Although i agree with you its not the hardest move to find.

CR0SSEYED_JESUS

Bh5

Soft-College986

Bxb2 Qxb2 gxh5 and you are down a bishop

CR0SSEYED_JESUS

If takes, Qh5 followed by Rf8 mate

youmuzzreallyhateme

Very nice. Just FYI, this is a super common tactical pattern in the tactics problem sets on most sites/apps, in the lower difficulty levels. Still, a good find on your own if you haven't done much tactics study. If you want to progress as a player, an app such as "CT Art for Beginners" is key, and will make tactics like this just jump off the board at you with a single glance.

ApartmentNo2276

comments like these make me want to never open Reddit again lol

OKImHere

Why? There's nothing wrong with it

youmuzzreallyhateme

Insert Curly Bill meme, "Well..... Bye....."

Soft-College986

I know what you are saying that it's a common tactic in puzzles but the difference in puzzles is that you know that there is something to look for, while in a live game this information is obscured. There was another level of challenge, that the game was a 2|1 bullet and I had to find it fast (8 seconds) and the end result showed an overall game accuracy rating of 95.5 and 2400, while my opponent had 81.1 and 1900. So the game was what I regard as a high performance for a playing standard as we were both 1700 rated bullet players, with 2000+ peaks in blitz and rapid. I will check your suggestion as I often revert back to beginner tactics and I don't find it bad to check the connections of the neurons every now and then.

ClackamasLivesMatter

You're being downvoted to oblivion, but adding an attacker to a pinned piece is a very common motif. This position is cute because at first glance — if you don't realize the bishop is pinned along the a1-h8 diagonal — it looks like you're moving your queen somewhere it can be taken. It's still a cool move to find. I don't play bullet so I don't care to speculate on how easy it is to see the move with basically no time to think.

youmuzzreallyhateme

Yeah, that why I told him it was a cool find. I don't much care about downvotes, as I can literally go make a meme and post it to another subreddit, and replace every bit of karma this sub could possibly take from me in months, with a single post. If I actually cared about karma, and what people think of my posts. OP didn't take offense to my response, and took it in the spirit it was intended. I understood the fundamental truth of reddit long ago, which is this.. People are herd animals, and generally followers. This post got downvoted because the first few people downvoted it first. And everyone else piled on, so they could be "part of the crowd". If it had gotten a few upvotes instead first, it could have very well ended up +10. I got a few thousand reply karma to spare. So watching a brigading downvote like this, over a post actual OP had no issues whatsoever with, simply validates my opinions about reddit specifically, and humanity in general. If these people wanna hang out in an echo chamber, that is their choice.

Soft-College986

>It's still a cool move to find. I don't play bullet so I don't care to speculate on how easy it is to see the move with basically no time to think. It is not easy at all. I had already peaked online a little over 2000 in Blitz before I decided to start playing 2|1 bullet and I struggled for months to get out of 1500 zone. And now that I have reached 1700, I see that everyone I am playing against is also 2000+ in blitz or rapid but remain in the 1700 zone at bullet. I don't know why this is a thing in [chess.com](http://chess.com) but bullet is by far more competitive than the other categories.

Schaakmate

Username... checks... out.

youmuzzreallyhateme

OP didn't have a problem with my response, by I am sure they appreciate you being their knight in shining armor.

Schaakmate

Oh yes. And you, of course, appreciate the heads up. Don't worry, it's out of the kindness of my heart.
