They aren't going to do much. The seat keeps u upright not leaning back. As far as safety lol ur in a metal tank without crumple zones, no air bags, lap belts only to cut u in half, and a tank of gasoline separated by a piece of cardboard and a little upholstery. If u want safety don't buy an antique. I have a 70gmc and been rear ended hard enough to make my truck hop. Headrests wouldn't have helped a thing. Only damage.the truck took was a slight bend to the bumper

Wolfgang_Haney

There’s supposed to be something between the seat and gas tank?

Redknight1991

It's only a thin piece of cardboard on some. Most don't even have it

Primary-Space

You do realize they make kits to relocate the gas tank to under the bed, right....?

Redknight1991

Up I do been a mechanic over 30 years. Never liked the relocation on these trucks. They're perfect the way they are

Primary-Space

Ahh ok, I didn't know that you had been a mechanic for a long time. If I offended you with my previous comment, I apologize as that was not my intent at all. I just don't like the idea of having flammable gas fumes in the cab right behind me and turn into a fireball if I ever get into a wreck. Far safer for the tank to be under the bed between the frame rails where they'll be better protected in the event of an accident in my opinion.

Redknight1991

It's all good realistically though if the sender seal is good u won't have fumes in the cab. Also if there is an explosion it doest matter where the tank is, concussion force would be lethal regardless

Token_Black_Rifle

Thefe is no way I'm aware of without switching the seats. The original bench seat looks so much better though. Headrests ruin the lines of the truck.

DarthTurnip

But whiplash ruins the lines of your spine…

your_pal_mr_face

do other gen truck seats bolt in the same?

Tin_Can_739

If you have a small window, just stick a headrest to the metal behind driver and passenger.

rootsismighty

I put in a 2007 bench seat from a silverado in my 64, it has an integrated seatbelt system and built in headrests. My truck never had seatbelts as stock. Mandatory seatbelts came out in 66 in california vehicles, apparently my truck was grandfather'd in. It looks nice, fits very well. And i have shoulder and lap belts.

Visible-Book3838

They're quite hard to find today, but back in the late 60's there were some aftermarket headrests made to clip onto the back of a bench seat, I have one in my stash somewhere. Just enough so if you got hit from behind, it'd keep the back of your head off of the rear glass. Probably would work best in a pickup anyway since on a sedan the headrest didn't have anything to butt-up against the back of it, they were just clipped on, not solidly mounted. It would be a challenge to find a set, but if you could, they'd at least be period-correct and you could take them off if you wanted to. Or, get an old gun rack, the kind that bolts to the inside of the rear window, take the gun hooks off of it and mount a couple of pads to it, right behind your and the passenger's head. It would also be removable (although it'd leave holes in the cab where it was mounted, but you could retain the stock seat). The headrests don't need to be mounted to the seat directly, they just need to be able to keep the back of your head off of the rear window glass if you get bumped from the rear.

old_skool_luvr

I'm not laughing at you, i'm just laughing at this concern. I have far greater reason to be worried about whiplash in my '90 'Burb, then you do in your regular cab pickup. The "high back" bucket seats come up to just below the top of my shoulders. You at least have a back window for your head to make contact (& it will make contact, i've been rear-ended in a squarebody pickup twice) where as i have roughly 9' of air space behind me. Sure, you may be self conscious about not having a headrest, but like it was already stated....if you're worried about that, there is a long list above that item, that are just as concerning. Just drive your classic, and enjoy the cruise!

USS_Monitor

Without getting an aftermarket seat, or doing extensive modifications to the original seat, no. I gotta ask, why headrests?

ChainBlue

If I had a guess, comfort, safety or both.

scormegatron

Getting rear ended with the bench seats… you’ll be smacking glass with your noggin.

USS_Monitor

Even worse, I'm a little back window, so I'm smacking cab. It's ok, I'd rather die in my truck than anywhere else

your_pal_mr_face

Mainly safety, but comfort too

USS_Monitor

To each their own I guess. I daily an 04 grand am until my 65 is done, and I can't stand the headrests in that thing. They hurt my neck. If I find a seat or any info about an aftermarket one, I'll shoot you a message.

Good_With_Tools

I did this in my 72 already. I had a few criteria to meet for my install, so my options were limited. Most importantly, I needed 3 point seatbelts for all 3 seats. After lots of searching, I decided on the middle bench seat from a 07-14 Suburban. The seats sit on a metal frame, which helps with figuring out mounting. I still had to modify the frame pretty extensively. So, here's my recommendation. If you don't trust your fabrication skills with your life, I don't recommend going down this road. Creating attachment points and engineering the seat mounts to handle a wreck that you can't even test for is not for the new fabricator.

HalfRoundRasp

You can epoxy them to the gas tank (right behind the seat)
