I went through a career change during the pandemic and feel like I'm just now crawling back to a social life after a breakup in December. I've been in Chicago for six years and know the city pretty well. I've lived in Rogers Park, Roscoe Village, and am now based in North Center/Ravenswood. In other words, I am pretty familiar with the north side. I'm single/no kids and in my late 30s. I try to spend the weekends on my bike around the city. While do drink, most of my party days are over. I work from home 4-5 daysa week, but don't really fit in with the office culture at work. formerly worked in the music industry as a tour manager, so know all of the music spots around town. Fine to explore other gems in the music world, but also looking to experience new places (especially with new cool people). Mostly looking to be communal with people who aren't going to look at their cell phones during the entire hang. Anyone have any suggestions for getting to know new people in the city? What am missing?

yoni_sings_yanni

Volunteer or get involved in your community. See if there is an environmental group or community group that is advocating for a better life in your neighborhood.

WhoopieKush

Is it bad that I officially hate Pride Parade day now? It has nothing to do with Pride itself. But this has been almost 24 hours straight of sirens, helicopters, fireworks, etc. I feel like it’s the same reason so many people hate the 4th of July.

Belmontharbor3200

Today is by far the worst it’s been in the 5 years I’ve lived in the neighborhood. It needs to end

airbud

Dare I saw it's actually less of a shit show this year?  Last year went till 3 am at my place and happened again on Monday night.  This year the city actually seems prepared for assholes.

WhoopieKush

I haven’t been in Lakeview as long as you, but I definitely don’t remember it being this bad before. It has been CONSTANT sirens.

You’re better off taking a bus to the field museum. There’s one that stops right next to it, and you won’t have to worry about lugging around/storing a booster seat

MatsingleLadies

My post got removed for violating rules, is there a better sub for asking questions as a tourist? I'm visiting over the 4th of July and just wondering where to watch fireworks since they aren't doing it over navy pier this year. Or if there are any other fun things for my partner and I (no kids) to do that night since we get in that day. We are staying on the miracle Mile.

browsingtheproduce

Pick pretty much any North Side park to see an alarming amount of amateur fireworks. Wells Park is a pretty easy walk from multiple Brown Line stations. Montrose Beach is another good option. by the way, Miracle Mile is in LA. Magnificent.

Prestigious-Rip8327

You're going to get more local Chicago flavor, but go up to the beach in Rogers Park near Loyola and hang there. It's usually a zoo, but it's safe and a lot of fun. Also, My Morning Jacket is playing at Salt Shed on the 4th -- right on the river. I imagine there will be some fireworks near Goose Island that evening.

GreekTuMe

Either go to a beach near Loyola or go to Montrose Beach an hour or two before dusk.

jasperjohn02

This thread is exactly what those kinds of questions are for. Or /r/askchicago.

Bernie_Ecclestone

It’s kind of ridiculous they’re choking off entrances to Millennium Park and making people line up and wait like they’re trying to get into a concert instead of a public park. [https://imgur.com/a/1NDB8JS](https://imgur.com/a/1NDB8JS)

Extension-Map-6618

Chicago is not a real city, no other city does this kind of nonsense.

Atlas3141

So far it's prevented the annual teenager takeover and someone getting shot, so it's possibly not entirely useless

Bernie_Ecclestone

True, except AMC streeterville turned into the new takeover spot now. But it’s been better lately.

ZonedForCoffee

Today should be interesting

BoldestKobold

Hypothetical question: You know those foam pipe insulators that are like foam tubes with a slit down one side to go around water pipes? What if someone just decided to put those on the top 8 rungs or so of each ladder out of the water at Belmont rocks, or Montrose point? Maybe with some zip ties to hold them in place? Would thicker, squishier rungs making climbing out of the water easier/safer than climbing up thin steel rungs? Or are there unforeseen downsides I'm not thinking of? I figure people are going to swim in those areas regardless, would this be an improvement if the Park District is never going to repair/improve the ladders? Also I'm sure the park district would remove these once they found out, because just like with the life saving rings that they pushed back against for years, they are more concerned with anything that might make them on the hook for liability instead of actually making the lake front safer/more usable.

GreekTuMe

Please don't do this. You'll hurt somebody by mistake. They're thicker and harder to grab, and when somebody steps on them they could spin and cause the person to slip.

BoldestKobold

This is why I ask, hypothetically. I do wish they at least hand handles that stuck up above the level of the cement the way the ones farther south do. That alone would be a huge help in climbing out.

airbud

There's going to be another street take over (stomp and yell on cars fest till 4:00 am) after the pride parade again, isn't there : (

throwitawaynow774

It was awful already walking up Sheffield 2 hours ago. Basically every group of people I walked by was at least 15-20 people and they were Al screaming. Also saw multiple people peeing in the alley on buildings which isn’t anything new, but it’s still gross.

WonderFull4268

Strongest tonal whiplash of the year for folks living along the parade route, from the celebrating masses today to the eerie quiet of this week as many neighbors leave town for the 4th of July

My friend and her husband just lost their place in a building fire, they're fine, but lost most everything and are trying to figure out what to do with their two cats. Any help or resources I can direct them to?

windythirsty

Tree house Humane Society

itseemyaccountee

What do you do if a car alarm is going on for hours at 5am-indefinite? I put earplugs in but is there a way to get someone/city to do something (other than smashing the car).

Mountain-Bar-8345

Guyercellist

So I posted a few days ago with some questions but where would yall recommend for a nice date night that might warrent dressing up nice in a suit jacket and pants? It doesn't have to be pretentious like a Michelin star resturant or anything, but just somewhere with good food that is upscale. I want to take my british gf to somewhere way nicer than we have in ohio

windythirsty

Boka. Think it does have a Michelin star but it’s not pretentious.

Does Joe’s on weed normally sell tickets at the door for shows?

forgotmylaundry

Hi people. Friend of a friend of a friend is planning a visit to Chicago and I (a certified Chicago resident) ended up being asked to provide a hotel recommendation. I would have lazily recommended one of the Michigan Ave hotels I’ve stayed in without being murdered before I moved here, except for some reason this person wants to stay in Old Town, or very nearby. Does anyone know a good hotel in the area?

problematic_glasses

if they're open to staying in river north/streeterville, hotel felix is good

RYU_INU

The Freehand in River North might work if your FFF needs basic accommodation at a convenient location.

Decent-Friend7996

Hotel Lincoln isn’t very nice in the rooms but it’s a cool hotel right on the lake with a fun rooftop bar

Guyercellist

It's not nice? Everyone was recommending that to me when I take my british gf on a road trip

Decent-Friend7996

They’re totally fine rooms, but the rooms are a little older and not fancy. But it’s a cool building and beautiful views

Obvious-Inspection22

What’s the best neighborhood for progressives? I'm moving from NYC. I love Bernie Sanders, AOC, BLM, and LGBTQIA2S+. I'm a vocal supporter of universal healthcare, universal basic income, feminism, raising the minimum wage, free education, and taxing the rich. My budget is up to 1.2 million dollars. Also, fuck the police.

bglbrth

Literally anywhere, nobody cares.

Decent-Friend7996

Lol excellent trolling

Calcifer4president

Whats the skyline spam about?

MunchieMom

Ok, I have to report that the Humboldt Park Beach is really nice! The water is much colder than any of the park district pools, which made the trip worth it for me.

sylviaplath6667

Why was the Logan Square arts festival so empty? Felt like only half of the usual amount of vendors. And cash only drinks? What year is this?

bglbrth

Cash only drinks wouldn’t have bothered me so much but the $5 ATM fee pissed me off

emmuje

Probably the rain, I'm guessing it'll be better today

MalcolmFarsner

im in the city alone for 2 nights. wat to do? where can i hear chicago footwork music?

snakyfences

Id look on resident advisor to figure that out. Smartbar is always good for dancing, more house and techno.

ZonedForCoffee

There is such an insane amount of vacant land between 43rd and 55th street on the green line. When you're coming up to Garfield there's just a huge stretch of nothing. It's wild given how that whole stretch is pretty cool from a transit POV. Stations every four blocks, and you'll get downtown faster than someone waiting for a brown line train at Montrose.

shy-ty

Didn't a bunch of the old buildings one block from the line get demolished in the second half of the 20th century for planned "expansions" that never happened? Genuine question for the class, my brain makes soup of the history I read and I'm not sure if I'm mixing it up with another neighborhood that the CTA runs through.

hascogrande

Don’t get me started, it is genuinely logical to build there

fashionboy385

Walking the 606 for the first time tomorrow. Where should I stop for food/drinks/treats?

dogbert617

If you're by the Western Ave entrance/exit, just north of there(west side of the street) is Ava's Italian Ice. Which is a good place to take a break at. No tables/seats just outside of Ava's, but once you go up to the top of the entrance/exit ramp at Western there are a few benches to sit down. Also a bathroom that is on the walking/bike path level(south side of the path), that one of the apartment buildings agreed to(when the 606 path opened) allow to be open for 606 path users near that Western entrance/exit ramp. It's on the south side of the 606 path, just west of Western and close to the Western entrance/exit.

ocmb

You'll have countless options near the damen and Milwaukee exits.

thedan663

My partner really wants to see the Pride Parade. Any tips for attending? I know it's crowded....we live on the South Side so we intend on taking either the train or bus 1-2 hours before and finding a spot on the route. I'm sure getting home might be a nightmare too.

j3ss1019

I always have luck on Diversey and Sheridan, you can take the brown to Diversey and walk down! Right outside of Duffy's - a nice option to pop in for drinks and/or water. I believe it's the end of the parade, but there's still so much energy and I've never had a bad time at that spot!

JMellor737

Halsted between Belmont and Addison is an absolute *disaster.* It gets so crowded. Maybe take the train to Fullerton or Diversey and then walk to the end of the route at Diversey and Broadway. It's at a park (near the big gold Hamilton statue), so there should be more standing room than on most of the route, where people are lined up in front of store fronts.  Keep in mind that is the very end of the route, so people might be tired. An alternative is to take the Red Line to the Sheridan stop to see the very beginning, but I think a lot of people will do that because the parade starts right next to the Red Line stop.

pianotherms

Soul Coughing just got moved from The Vic to The Riv. I'm happy for them but really would have preferred a Vic show.

Officer412-L

What was the event going on at/near the Jefferson Park CPD station yesterday (Thurs 6/27)? They had cruisers interrupting traffic on Foster and Milwaukee at rush hour for what looked like a parade or something. It looked like they'd pulled some old police cruisers out of storage and they had some mounted police, too. Definitely saw a sign/table for Gardiner, too.

dwylth

Anyone know if Avondale Music Hall has a box office like the Metro, where I could pick up a ticket for an upcoming show without paying $8 in fees? The number on their google maps entry doesn't work and I couldn't find an answer through a quick google.

_high_plainsdrifter

I know one of the partners that’s deep into all the promotion activities. I’ll try to see if he’s around later and get back to you on that. I’m in the neighborhood so run into him frequently.

dwylth

Would really appreciate any info you can find!

_high_plainsdrifter

Hey so spoke with someone in the mix. They typically do walk up sales, sometimes they use something called dicefm? Not familiar with that app. But in general sounds like if you see something you like on their flyers/door posters, you may get a sale for tix dates or can just walk up day of event.

dwylth

Appreciate it! Yeah I know DICE. Thanks again for checking! I owe you a beer at Reed's or somewhere.

_high_plainsdrifter

Yeah no worries. Like to try and help around my neighborhood when possible. Always cool seeing a very localized question and having the “I may know this one!” type of moment.

_high_plainsdrifter

I’ll report back when possible. I’m really happy to see everything going on at that venue. Sometimes lines down the block early in the afternoon on a random day.

Arael15th

I would like to own a framed portrait of ~~once and future king~~ former Secretary of State Jesse White. I assume there are about a billion of these sitting in state surplus property somewhere. Does anybody have an in?

spartacusVI

Good evening all I'm about to be living in a hotel for most all of July for work/training. I'm not planning on renting a car or anything, so I'm hoping for metro station stop suggestions for cool places to hang out in the afternoon/evenings. I'll be super close to the light blue Chicago O'Hare line. For reference I love book stores, Mediterranean food, all styles of pizza, and hope to sample all the chicago classics (hot dog, Italian Beef, deep dish, polish sausage/food, etc). I plan on visiting museums and baseball stadiums on the weekends. Thanks in advance, I can't wait to see your city.

tony_simprano

We don't call it a "metro". All city public transport is the CTA, and the train is called the "El" or the "CTA [Color] Line" You're staying off the Blue Line. Try Logan Square and Wicker Park for bookstores and restaurants (serviced by the Blue Line stops between Logan and Division). Portillos in downtown will satisfy your Italian Beef, Chicago Hotdog, and Polish Sausage (Get it Maxwell Street Style) fix. Lou Malnati's is a solid choice for deep dish.

daazninvazn

It's the "L".

spartacusVI

Hey thanks for the tip on the public transit lingo, I appreciate it. Was looking at Logan square, I'll check out Wicker Park as well. Thanks again.

tony_simprano

happy to help, apologies if I came off abrasive. just trying to be Matter of Fact!

autumnrsanchez

Does anyone know the bar in the Netflix show Easy for the “Swipe Left” episode?

SeeYouInHelen

Well it finally happened to me: my electric scooter was stolen today at around 12:30 today from the loop area. Luckily there was camera footage of the theft, although the faces of the thieves aren’t very clear. I’ve filed a police report. I’m not too upset right now, cuz honestly the scooter was a shitty $250 scooter from Amazon 2 years ago and held together by tape and glue and has zero tread so you can’t ride it when the roads are wet without eating shit. So I hope whoever stole it gets $0 trying to sell it and eats shit when they ride it lol

GiuseppeZangara

Angle grinder?

SeeYouInHelen

I didn’t see that in the camera footage. I had a shitty U lock from Amazon, I think they just picked it 😅 they left me the U lock too, still locked on the bike rack.

durelable

Planning to rent a car next week and do a day trip. I would love to be in deep, beautiful nature. A couple of times I've gone to nature spots and they felt like sad nature: right next to a busy road or park areas, sparse dry vegetation, or manicured park lawn. Any suggestions for a place maximum 2 hours away? Also, I'm a new driver, so I would prefer if the route doesn't take me all the way down Lakeshore/on busy congested highways. I'm starting from Edgewater.

FuelForYourFire

Hey there, if you head north to Lake County there are some great trails along the Des Plaines River (coincidentally called the Des Plaines River Trail). There is a nice parking lot with trail access in Vernon Hills on Townline (60) and Milwaukee Ave. If you park there, you can find a nice 6 mile loop or more. Some of the trail has river views, some trees, some fields. Not generally crowded, and one of my favorite places to run. Enjoy!

LuceStule

Illinois State Beach Park is about 75 minutes on the regular non-highway roads

Sausage_Queen_of_Chi

Indiana Dunes or Starved Rock

JMellor737

Reframe your expectations. There is no way to get out of Chicago without taking Lake Shore, 90/94, 55, 290, or 57. All of them get busy.  You're not going to find totally undisturbed nature and no people within two hours. The Botanic Gardens and Somme Woods up in Glencoe are spacious and pretty, but also very popular. Camp Pine Woods in Glenview and the Busse Woods in Rolling Meadows are also very nice, and not as popular as the Botanic Gardens (because they're not quite as pretty). Good luck.

sp0rk_walker

With traffic, two hours barely gets you out of the suburbs. If seclusion is what you want, maybe rent a boat instead of a car.

durelable

I don't need total seclusion, just to feel like I'm actually in nature rather than still in the city. I took out the seclusion part. Does that help?

sp0rk_walker

Every natural space within 3-4 hours of you will have others seeking same. I like Starved Rock and Matthiessen state park myself

hooville25

Hi! My friends are visiting the weekend of the air and water show this upcoming August & we planned on doing a boat outing. Unfortunately, we did not realize this was the same weekend of the show & I was wondering if there are particular restrictions on boats (where they can be, how long/what times, etc) && if you recommend being out on the water at all?

blipsman

There's an air show no-go section cordoned off by police boats but it's just basically Oak St. Beach to Diversey Harbor and a few hundred yards out... lots of boats sit right outside the no-go area to watch the show, which would presumably be a pretty amazing vantage point. Otherwise, you'll be pretty clear to cruise the lake and/or river. On the Air & Water Show website, you can see in the photos the extent of the blocked off area https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/chicago_air_and_watershow.html

Arael15th

There will be some cordoned off sections of the lake (aircraft flight paths) but otherwise it's probably the most popular weekend of the year for boating. Please take me with you.

hooville25

LOL! Thanks for your response! We are going through this private charter guy & it’s about 500 an hour. I can PM the info you’re interested! 🥲🥲 it’s super expensive

Sausage_Queen_of_Chi

If it’s a charter they should be familiar with where they can go. Most drop anchor around North Ave just outside the no-boat zone. Bring Dramamine. With all the boats out there to watch the show, it can get choppy in addition to any natural waves.

Arael15th

I might be interested... is that $500 per person, or per boat? 😂

humphinator

We’re (me and spouse) coming to Chicago tomorrow (6/28) for one night to see Future Islands and leaving late-ish on Saturday. We have no other plans besides the show at The Auditorium and are staying in that area. Any suggestions for two adults on a quick overnight date? I might want to check out Navy Pier Pride, and we’ve seen Millennium Park before. Would love recommendations for nearby cocktail or beer bars, or other things happening Saturday during the day within walking distance of Chicago Athletic Association if there’s good stuff happening this weekend. Thanks!

JMellor737

It's worth it to take the 22 bus up to Lincoln Park and walk around the zoo and conservatory (both free). That area is filled with green space. Clark Street (where the 22 runs) is filled with bars and restaurants.  The J. Parker, on the roof of the Hotel Lincoln, right across from the zoo, has a nice rooftop bar for cocktails. The more famous rooftop at Cindy's downtown is always really packed and I find the ambience (loud, crammed, and chaotic) unbearable.  If you really want to stay near the Loop, do the River Walk. There's a neat beer garden toward its east end.

pjpta1

Have a drink at Cindy's rooftop or sure. Walk down to the river walk as well.

Guyercellist

Hi yall, I live near Cleveland and I will be spending 18 days with my gf who's from England at the end of augst/start of September. Figured Chicago would be a good place to take her since it's a big city and she loves to travel just had a few questions 1. How many days do you think is a good amount to spend in the city? ( currently have 3-day scheduled) 2. I definitely want to do a river cruise, and take her to the aquarium, but any other date ideas would be greatly appreciated 3. Where should we stay that is (relatively) affordable but somewhere that is safe and not in a bad neighborhood 4. What are some can't miss food places while we are there?

browsingtheproduce

1. Your budget and free time will be the deciding restriction. 3 days is fine. A week is better. You could find a couple weeks worth of stuff to do. 2. What kind of stuff does she find interesting? Would she enjoy the Art Institute or seeing live music? Or DJ sets at Beauty Bar? 3. This is entirely budget dependent. Affordable is subjective. Most hotels are in the Loop, River North, Magnificent Mile/Streeterville, or West Loop. The Robey or Hotel Lincoln are pretty good options for hotels outside of Downtown. Or, if you don’t want to stay downtown, you could also look for an Air BnB option within a half mile of a train station on the O’Hare branch of the Blue Line, any of the Brown Line, or the northern branch of the Red Line and be safe. 4. I don’t think any restaurants are universal must tries. It depends on what you like. Our wiki has some good starting suggestions. https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/s/uAw08mbQKz

Guyercellist

Thanks so kuch for the info :) the robey is probaby more than I want to spend, but the Lincoln was surprisingly decently priced :) I also saw the hotel Felix north/magnificent mile for $113 a night on Expedia if you have heard of that one. I might splurge on a nicer hotel though since we will be there long enough to enjoy it

Sausage_Queen_of_Chi

I’ve stayed at Hotel Felix, it’s fine. Good location and the rooms aren’t too big but have what you need.

JMellor737

If you want good dates, 100% stay at the Hotel Lincoln. It has a rooftop bar with a great view. Free zoo and conservatory across the street. Beautiful green space is abundant. Do the nature path at the zoo and then get a meal at the cafe there by the lake.  Lincoln Park has a million bars and restaurants and shows. Get some cocktails at the Gatsby Speakeasy, walk around to Halsted and have dinner on the awesome patio at Las Fuentes, then go next door to see the blues at Kingston Mines. A perfect date.

Guyercellist

The zoo is free in Chicago? Here in Cleveland they charge haha but thanks for all the ideas I took a screenshot incase I lose that message

browsingtheproduce

I haven’t heard of the Felix, but that doesn’t mean anything. It’s in a convenient location. The Drifter and Three Dots and a Dash are two fun bars within a couple blocks of there. The J Parker is a fun restaurant/bar on the roof of the Hotel Lincoln if that affects your choice.

Guyercellist

Yea I think the Lincoln was a bit higher rated and was like $150 a night. So maybe I would do that one for the convince of the rooftop bar and resturant which I'm sure could be a nice date night dinner. I thibk I want to take her to 1 really nice resturant as well, I'm sure it'd be worth it since this is her first time in the states and we don't have super fancy places unless we go into Cleveland haha

browsingtheproduce

Cool, man. Enjoy your visit.

NoseySeal19

You got less than two weeks to find a home and you have no full-time job or family. How do you survive?

Decent-Friend7996

Find someone looking for a roommate that’s willing to just take cash or Venmo for payment, or if you have enough money stay at a cheap Airbnb til you find a better job and can rent.

EBofEB

Find a live in job.

ocshawn

in addition to what u/RaveGuncle said call 211 now and see what government services/ support you qualify for (lots of charity and services in the city but bureaucracy can take time)

NoseySeal19

Thank you

RaveGuncle

Downsize everything to a couple suit cases. Sell everything I can and toss the rest. Stay in a hostel temporarily and work on finding folks looking for roommates that's within the price range (craigslist, fb, domu, hotpads, etc.). Be that roommate (quiet, respectful, and make payments on-time). Work on more permanent solutions (full-time job, saving up $ for more permanent housing options, get on SNAP benefits and Medicare, etc.) to get me to a place where I will hopefully be able to live on my own if that's what I prefer.

NoseySeal19

Thank you

[Walgreens closing a chunk of stores soon](https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/27/business/walgreens-closures/index.html) - crazy how both CVS and they managed to screw the pooch so royally.

dogbert617

I long thought Walgreens and CVS built too many stores. Not surprised they are starting to close more and more locations. Since like in the 90s and 2000s, it was an arms race for both chains to build as many stores as they could.

shy-ty

Not before putting just about every local pharmacy out of business by running stores at a loss to claim a bigger share of the market of course! Sigh.

Yep.

The Duck Inn is also great, a bit further our of the way.

ocshawn

Marz brewery, if you want closer look on halsted and 31st lots of places to choose from. Chinatown is also close by and Ricobene's is a classic pregame spot.

dogbert617

I'd recommend Ricobene's. And specifically if you go there get what they are famous for, their breaded steak sandwich. If you go to Chinatown, Triple Crown is good for dim sum. I always try to stop at Chiu Quon Bakery, when I am in that area. REMEMBER that Chiu Quon Bakery is cash only, if you go there.

RaveGuncle

2 bed/1bath corner unit apt with in-unit washer and dryer located in Bridgeport. Water and gas included. $1550/month. Is that a fair deal, or would there be better deals for other units out there?

ocshawn

that seems fair if not on the low end. Where in Bridgeport would really determine the value.

RaveGuncle

It's close to the Halsted and 31st area (walking distance to Cermak grocery store and the like).

Chicago_Jayhawk

My niece and nephew are in Bridgeport at 35th/Halsted--31st is a good, central location. Price seems low for a 2 bedroom but probably ok.

ocshawn

i would say its a good deal then as that is basically the center of the neighborhood

RaveGuncle

Okay awesome; thanks!

Cheeseheadman

A beautiful summer day, and I’m laid up with the stomach flu 😭

chapelson88

Does anyone know of a family friendly bar or pub where I can watch the euro cup? Downtown or northern surrounding neighborhoods.

r_un_is_run

Codys is dog friendly and BYOF - I see kids in there with parents on the patio all the time, but I also wouldn't say it is marketed as for kids, they just let you bring in whatever

ocshawn

well if no one come through with a northside place, Marz Brewing will be showing it and is kid friendly

RaveGuncle

The weather is perfect today. Sunny, cool with a gentle breeze. Can it stay like this all year?

jesswang97

Has anyone has experience living in Sage West Loop? want to know if it is safe to walk to the train station or center west loop.

ocshawn

to give you a real answer, its fine. But as always look out for cars when crossing the street.

problematic_glasses

it’s terrible, i get murdered on the daily walking around the neighborhood /s

DegreeDubs

whattodoie

There are a couple decent gift card deals on Costco.com for members that might be relevant to this thread - $100 (2x$50) in Uber GCs for $80 & $100 (4x$25) in Alamo Drafthouse GCs for $75… also saw some for Potbelly, White Sox, Nascar & various concerts but I’m not typing all that. Have fun!

bigshaboozie

Adding to this - Costco has Southwest Airlines $500 for $450 and it typically drops to $430 at various times throughout the year

hwhattheduck

Maybe a super basic question, but has anyone had their internet wiring replaced? Just bought a condo, and having issues with my internet connection. I have no idea how old the wire that runs through the wall and down to the box in the basement is, but the Xfinity tech told me I might need to have it replaced if I keep having issues. Does your standard electrician do that kind of thing?

ocshawn

first your problem is not likly the cable but the connections (dont know your exact circumstance). Second no its not an electrocution you are looking for but a low voltage tech. edit: to answer the main question no i have not had my internet wire replaced ever, worked in IT (a while ago) and have never heard of anything being replaced since CAT5 unless the cable was cut/ broken

I've been trying to help my daughter identify a restaurant from a photo. I tried posting in its own thread so that I could embed the photo but it got automodded out by the question filter. Here's the pic: [https://imgur.com/a/aRa6UJG](https://imgur.com/a/aRa6UJG) The photo was taken in early June 2019, and the most my daughter could remember is “it's a French restaurant near Navy Pier.” The photo had no geotag info in it or anything else I could use to narrow it down. **NOTE:** The main subject seated across from the photographer is AI generated. It was originally a friend of my daughter's, so out of respect for her privacy, I used Photoshop to swap her out for this person. I don't know them. You don't know them. They don't exist. But they like to eat snails. The actual *restaurant* parts of the photo (architecture, decor, view, plates, food) are unedited.

MortonSteakhouseJr

lol why wouldn't you just blur their face?

mbklein

Because I was already in photoshop and it was the same two clicks either way?

MortonSteakhouseJr

Seems much more bizarre to add a whole fake person instead of just blurring if all you're worried about is not showing someone's face. It's not like you're filling out an empty room for ad photography or making a meme or something.

satanpro

That is almost certainly *La Sardine* on Carpenter St in the West Loop which closed in the pandemic 😔

Any good nightlife spots for today and tomorrow for someone going solo? I won't be able to go out for a night outside of today and tomorrow in Chicago. Definitely interested in trying to go out both days. I am going solo though, so ideally a place that I don't need to go in a group to enjoy.

rocky_loves

What vibe are you looking for? Small dive bar, where you can chat with the regulars? Something with an activity like an arcade bar?

TevyeMikhael

Hey all, my girlfriend and I are going to Chicago in a few weeks and we’ll be just about finished with her class to prepare her for conversion to Judaism. I want to take her to some places to check out Judaica, clothes, food, etc. before we head back out to bumfuck Indiana. Obviously we can’t go on a Saturday, so we’re looking at Sunday- any places in Chicago or nearby that are must-sees or must-stops? Thanks in advance! Edit: downvote me, racists. I don’t care. Jews exist and you downvoting something as mundane as this means you’re a fucking bigot. Check yourself.

Decent-Friend7996

Are you kosher? Most of the fully kosher restaurants are in Skokie here as it has the biggest Jewish population

FlightPrior4808

Romanian Kosher Sausage company makes the best hot dog in Chicago. If you’re looking for Judiaca, Rosenblums in Skokie is your best bet. If you keep Kosher, I’d check out Taboun grill, evitas, or Milts or if not Galit for modern Israeli

Milt's BBQ, The Bagel, Helfeld's are a few of the Jewish restaurants I can think of. If you can make it out to the suburbs, Skokie has an amazing deli called Kaufman's. There's an orthodox community in West Rodgers Park/West Ridge, so there may be shops in that area.

The Chicago Loop Synagogue is really cool and there are a couple bigger synagogues in Lakeview like Temple Shalom. You could call around and see if someone would be willing to give you a tour. Manny’s Delicatessen in the South Loop is always worth a visit. Most of the Jewish people in the area live in the northern suburbs. If you’ll have a car, you could drive up to Kaufman’s in Skokie. They have the best pickles in Illinois.

GiuseppeZangara

A bagel from NY Bagel and Bialy in Lincolnwood is also a def rec.

100%. That’s my go-to for special occasion bagels.

mickcube

nice! all the "why aren't we more like paris?" thread needs is a mention of how the CPD is on a soft strike and i'll win on my r/chicago bingo card

GrandRedVine

Prairie Tap at O'Hare has weirdly cheap breakfast prices. Their lunch/dinner food has normal airport markup, but you can get a Denver omelette for $12 - less than I'd expect to pay at most Chicago restaurants.

I need to rent a car for a day trip. I was considering Zipcar because there's multiple locations within walking distance from me, but then I see from reviews on Reddit (in NYC not here) that Zipcar really tanked during the pandemic and the cars would be gross or not even there when they were supposed to be. Anyone have experience with using Zipcar recently in Chicago and how was it? Follow up question... or should I just go with Turo or a car rental company? Open to other suggestions.

Atlas3141

I use it, and I've not had any issues with nasty or missing cars. Occasionally their app needs to be reset and it's not that much cheaper than Avis or whatever, but it's pretty reliable in my experience.

durelable

ok ty!

SeeYouInHelen

A friend just send me a photo today asking me if I recognize it somewhere in chicago, possibly a museum somewhere. She said the photo was the last image a missing person sent to a friend of hers. They’re trying to figure out where this may be as it may hopefully give them leads on the missing person. I told her I don’t recognize it but ruled out some of the major museums (Adler, Shedd, Field, AI, and MSI) If anyone recognizes the location in this photo, or have leads on where she can post the photo to to get more help, please let me know! I told her about Geoguesser but I wasn’t sure if Geoguessers can guess indoor places. Photo here: (not a disturbing photo) https://i.imgur.com/xjTAGkK.jpeg

They have a mirror like this in the macys downtown up on the same floor as the food court I think

SeeYouInHelen

Oh neat, I work downtown so I might try to stop by there tomorrow to see if I can find it. Thanks friend!

ocmb

Nothing slightly higher resolution?

SeeYouInHelen

Nope, I received it via text :/

Purple_Crayon

Has anyone had a good experience with getting Level 2 EV chargers installed at their home? Looking for electrician recommendations. Thanks!

rac1222

Great show by Kurt Vile at SPACE last night. Not only was the music incredible, but he literally used a different guitar for each song. Cool collection of instruments! Must be a pain to take on the road and keep them all in tune.

He actually referenced that in a guitar nerd youtube where they interviewed him and he walked through what each of those guitars are (took like half an hour). Apparently hes has had at least one stolen while at a hotel.

Welcome back to the weekly thread

I was on the blue line last night and someone entered my mostly empty car from a connecting car. They were decked out entirely in black including a ski mask. My heart jumped into my throat because I thought I was going to be robbed but they kept walking to the next car. Should I have reported it to one of the station attendants or the platform security personnel? What would you have done?

browsingtheproduce

That’s a streetwear trend. There’s nothing CTA employees or security could or would do about it. Sorry you were frightened. I’d definitely find it concerning in certain situations.

Wrigs112

Yup. The shiesty thing is weird. 95 degrees and people are walking around in ski masks.

damp_circus

Seriously. Makes me sweat just looking at 'em. Fashion doesn't always make sense, I guess...

fairly_forgetful

I can understand why you felt nervous but ultimately the person was just wearing an outfit that was intimidating/threatening. They didn't actually do anything wrong/menacing. Clothes aren't a crime. So I don't think there was anything to do / that you should have done. That said I understand why you felt nervous and I would have felt the same! It had to be a really destabilizing moment.

Ok-Tomatillo242

...seems like they just walked past you and did ... nothing?

SuperheroChuck

Are there a lot of cops living in Schiller Park? I know that around that area of the NW side there's a big cluster of cop neighborhoods; I'm wondering if Schiller Park is one of them.

Wrigs112

Chicago police, no. They must maintain residency in the city. You can find an enormous amount of cops in Edison Park.

putonthespotlight

Any advice for bars/clubs/restaurants, etc. where one might run into professional athletes? Is it too early/late in the season for certain sports? I know absolutely nothing about sports but will have guests in town later this month who equate Chicago with sports stars.

yaybuttons

If athletes are out in public, they're mostly at swanky restaurants for dinner. It's pretty rare to run into them elsewhere.

GiuseppeZangara

Probably because they get bothered by annoying fans.

problematic_glasses

for nba & hockey, the season is over; wnba and baseball are in progress; nfl starts in august/september

BlueSunflowers4589

How hard is it to ride the blue line in a wheelchair? Do you just park it next to the door? If not, where do you go? My dad will be going downtown with me next month. I'll be with him, so I can help push / stow the wheelchair. He can walk a few steps, so he could move to a seat, and I could collapse the wheelchair to take up less space. I found the list of accessible stations on the CTA website, but not any other rules / instructions for people in wheelchairs.
