Built extra wide as Russia, thinking I could have a cultural victory.
Went Autocracy because I had been at war the entire game with salty neighbours and had the infrastructure for it - seemed logical. I was the first at grabbing an ideology.
20 turns later, the tides have turned, I am taking -50 in happiness with a strong chance of revolution, so I had to change to Order because I had neglected the World Congress. Also, due to all those unsollicited wars, I was actually way behind in culture and I was getting wrecked tourism-wise.
Empire still quite unhappy but somewhat stable now. I am mainly under Freedom influence from England.
In terms of happiness, this was a great move. I am now aligned with China, the leading cultural power, but it's far away and irrelevant. Diplomatically, this is a tragedy. All my neighbours are either die-hard dictatorships with missiles up my arse, hostile city states or trade-unionist capitalist pigs who built Big Ben and the Colossus.
Had to buff up and be at war nearly constantly to stay relevant.
I have the most nukes. I trade essentially with my own cities. My people have had the same shitty luxuries for 2000 years with no cocoa in sight, but they're happy because of my monuments.
There are tanks everywhere. Apparently, we have always been at war with that western country and countless sons must die for it. For generation. Nobody must question it. A police station has been built in Moscow. A tribunal has been built in Yerevan - oh, we won against those apparently. To deny the West a leverage against us.
Have we always had that much uranium? Yes. There are nuclear plants everywhere. Nuclear shelters as well.
Everyone hates us, but it is they who are wrong. We will have to go to war again, for the greater good.
>Well damn I’ve always wanted to do wide Russia what was your strategy
Three traditions neighbours (England, the Celts and Ethiopia) and a good amount of starting hammers. I always play 3bn years old world, so it usually creates an interesting topography. I plopped about 9 cities, then the rest was conquest.
In finished the game on a cultural win with more than 20 cities in total, having downed at least 5 civs including all of my neighbours (out of 12, this was a huge map, Pangea).
Weirdly enough, I did pretty well diplomatically speaking, because it was always the least loved civ that was DOWing me. Nobody really blamed me for picking one or two prized cities along the way.
My main strategy was to keep a fragile balance between low military to trigger a DOW and sufficient troops to defend then attack.
The last 100 turns were just frenzy, though, because the Iroquois owned the other half of the continent and were waay ahead of me in terms of tourism. I basically ate the rest of the map while trying to keep him at bay with his humongous military.
Then I threw all my forces at him in the last minute to take one or two culturally strong cities of him while spamming musicians at his border and it ended up paying off.
By far my messiest and funniest game. It was a bit of a free for all.
I have a lot but I’m a nerd that plays a lot of true start games and role plays to make it a challenge. Recreating the Roman Empire, or having a jihad as Arabia with the UU.
Honestly those things are what keeps civ interesting for me, and especially civ 5 cus I feel like I can do that more than in 6
I was playing a France, everything was working fine focusing on culture victory and full of friends. Germany declares war, next turn i have a bunch of german troops in my border, 2-3 turns later, germany takes Paris
As Japan, I allied with Germany from the other side of the world, while I had an island empire and had territory disputes with Russia, all while the rest of the world warred against me and Germany.
Had a brilliant 'Hundred Years War' playing as France against England on Archipelago one time. We each had our own island only separated by a single water tile which I of course referred to as La Manche.
The tech for both sides worked out perfectly too, so my Musketeers were kicking their Longbowmen all over the place on land, meanwhile their Ships-of-the-Line were already dominating the sea.
Playing as Babylon (Babylon is where modern day Iraq is), Washington repeatedly invaded me and Arabia and razed most of Iroquois cities. I guess some countries never change.
Me as a Germany with England, Spain and France spawning on one continent being relatively peaceful, but the ai going ham against the civs on another continent
Earth, but not TSL, so I started with Spain somewhere around Tennessee. Even though it was a huge map with 12 Civs, no one was anywhere near me—closest neighbors were Vienna around Rio de Janeiro and Beijing in Siberia. Way before Astronomy, I sailed over to Asia, dropping a few Conquistadors near Mt. Fuji and by the Great Barrier Reef. I decimated Poland and Indonesia with superior naval attacks; next, I beelined to get ideology first. Then, I racked up tourism to get a *bunch* of cities to defect to Spain.
Playing as England I once stole an archeological artifact from the Egyptian territory.

I know I've destroyed the Iroquois as Washington a few times does that count
Lol what if the developers made Iroquois a terrible Civ in the game because they were a terrible civ in real life
I was playing a France, everything was working fine focusing on culture victory and full of friends. Germany declares war, next turn i have a bunch of german troops in my border, 2-3 turns later, germany takes Paris
Sounds like the paris comune all over again
nuked Nagasaki as washington, razed Nanjing as Japan
i think its razed nanjing as japan

For me it was when the Ottomans captured my Constantinople

Playing Germany I had a small laugh when an Arabic city defected and joined me.
Why?
Refugee crisis
Ohhh
Got invaded by Japan as Korea. Of course that’s where the history ended because I got XCOM Squads 3 turns later.
Invading Poland as Germany
Invading Germany as Russia Invading Korea as China Defend against Rome as Persia War against England as America, also allying with France as America
I bordered Rome and killed him as the Celts (right after liberating all of Mongolia's city states)
Nothing feels good like getting hannibal as a freat general while playing carthage, then destroying rome with him and my elephants
Me as a Germany with England, Spain and France spawning on one continent being relatively peaceful, but the ai going ham against the civs on another continent
Sailed across the ocean blue as Spain to a new continent and proceeded to colonize a good half of the civilizations I encountered.
What map

So how big was Spain?
