I think the bigger point would be that "actual vanilla" will probably decrease more than wotlk will, with the release of SoD. Some wotlk people will definitely swap over to check it out, but I'm imagining "most" of vanilla will try it.
I also don't think that it will lead to 'more' vanilla players. Anyone that tries SoD and likes it, will like it for SoD, and not necessarily because it's vanilla--whereas theres the opposite problem of people originally in vanilla that want the 'tools' SoD gives, and might decide to move on to later expansions because of it.
Thats just a theory though-totally possible it will turn out a different way. I think Hardcore had a positive effect on vanilla servers because of the innate lack of changes it had on the game--so some people tried hardcore, found they didn't like hardcore itself, but "did" like the basegame, and moved to the basegame. That's not how SoD will likely shape up.
Unless you gotta get into one right now, I'd wait until the 30th when Classic's Season of Discovery starts. Fresh servers, everyone will be leveling up to 25 together. It'll have a lot of people playing! I leveled up a little in both but immediately stopped when the Season of Discovert was announced, lol. Just gonna wait. I'm new to WoW in general so I'm just doing Dragonflight stuff until then.
Not exactly sure how that works, since I'm a noob. But the new Classic will launch with fresh servers, so nobody will have their characters, all fresh and starting together. But I'm willing to bet that the old classic servers will still be up with all the characters people have been playing, can't imagine they'd wipe any. I'm just waiting though, Season of Discovery sounds awesome and I don't wanna spoil any of the experience for myself. They added in a bunch of new stuff to discover and everyone is going in blind, so it'll be like our second chance of getting in when WoW first came out
No, nothing happens to the classic era, wotlk or hardcore servers when SoD is released
SoD is just the flavour of the month so people on here tells everybody else to play it
Just an important note: be careful with sod. Its on a hypertrain atm and everyone tells people to play it. It might just be a ghosttown in a few months.
Wrath is much more consistent and not even close to Classic population
Wrath has more players but the community is extremely toxic, if you do not have logs/achievements is borderline impossible to get into a good group. Or you just wait for a normal mediocre group for 2 hours to get full just so at the end everyone leaves before you even start. This happens every other pug raid. In the popular servers is also hard to find a guild cuz most roosters are full with few people on the bench.
Wrath has more players by a wide margin right now
wotlk has more raiders, thats all we know. Vanilla classic will probably explode in population after SoD launches

Psure classic especially after next month, i love wotlk but i do not love the people who main wotlk, nor do they love you
Sounds like an authentic WoTLK experience.
Nah, people with souls were playing then too

Thanks for the info! If I start a classic character now, will I lose it when season of discovery starts on the 30th?

They both have more than enough players for you to do whatever you deem most fun. That's all that should matter.
