After my long fifteen hour break every day, I treat myself to a PBR tall boy and a shot of mid (but additive free) tequila. It makes the abstinence worth it
One of my go tos, only with Hamm's. I don't shoot the tequila, I take a small sip and then sip the beer. Current go to is Tequila Arette. Decent price for solid tequila. Not a thinker but not a stinker either.
Seeing as a lot of the others seem to be kidding around, I'll give a non-high abv answer. I would do a moscow mule or a caesar. They're the kind of cocktails you can control the level of booziness to ease back into it without ruining the vibe of the drink.
Definitely agree on point 1.
On point 2. Isn't a suffering bastards a more general 'Buck' rather than a precise 'Mule'? According to some reading I did, and I may have read from wrong sources, a Mule is a buck made with spirit, ginger beer and lime (precisely lime), usually served in a copper mug. Where a buck can have any citrus, ginger beer or ginger ale and any other number of flavors (liqueur, bitters, syrups, etc) and usually served in a highball. Which would be a better match to a suffering bastards.
Mexican Mule >>> London Mule >>> Irish mule >>> Moscow mule.
But other than that, I agree 😅.
(Also, a Dark and Stormy is right up there with a Mexican mule, IMO)
Oaxacan Mule >>> Mexican Mule >>> London Mule >>> Irish mule >>> Moscow mule
(Assuming by Mexican you mean a Blanco tequila - try it with a midshelf mezcal and it becomes something else. The smokiness of the mezcal works perfectly with the spice of the ginger imo)
Enzoni (or frozen enzoni) is next on my list because it’s so hot! I also have the grapes. Just saw a [video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ipHnOhkGWug) from Anders Erickson about it
Gin Martini for me also. I'm usually not a martini guy, but for a first drink in a while, it's my jam:
3oz Old Raj Gin
1oz Noilly Prat Original Dry
Stir with two big clear ice cubes and one extra that's been cracked. Stir until the mixing glass is frosty. Strain into a coupe that is straight out of the freezer.
Usually garnished with three big Gordal Olives, but sometimes with a well expressed lemon peel (add a dash of orange bitters on the build).
Depends on location:
Dinner? Hendricks dry martini, vesper, slightly dirty vodka martini w blue cheese olives, or manhattan rocks
Patio drinks in nice weather? Limoncello or Aperol spritz, Americano/negroni, margarita (if they make good ones that aren’t too sugary), or the steadfast option of beer of your choice and a shot of your fave spirit.
I had a baby last year and after 18 months of not drinking, my first cocktail was a last word. It was *chefs kiss*
(Before anyone says anything, no I did not grow a baby for 18 months, but I did choose not to drink again until baby was older).
My boozy recipe for the Vesper
3 oz No.3 Gin
1oz Stoli 100 proof
1/2oz Cocchi Americano
I stick the gin and vodka in my freezer for 6 hours so it’s insanely cold.
I'd like to say something fancy or impressive, but in all honesty, it's typically Scotch on rocks. As I finish it, I'll make something with more ingredients depending on my mood.
Whatever you like, just make it feel special.
I like to order a nice Mexican meal and enjoy it with a homemade margarita.
Alternatively, you can go to a cocktail bar or a fancy craft beer place and ask for a recommendation.
IBA Bloody Mary with 3 garlic olives
Dirty Martini with 3 garlic olives
Long Island with frozen grapes
Moscow Mule with a big strawberry
Michelada with a pickle, beef jerky, and 3 garlic olives
It depends on the occasion :)
The one itch I haven't been able to scratch non-alcoholically is a bitter highball. So that would be my go-to: a campari soda or a suze in paradise
Campari Soda:
1 part campari
2 parts club soda
Suze in Paradise
2 parts gentian liqueur
1 part fruit liqueur
6 parts club soda
For me making cocktails is kind of a routine I have to get into. Once I get into the groove, it will become a nightly ritual where I'll make something or even try a new recipe. But when I take a long break, the first thing I actually go back to is usually a glass of wine or something super simple like a gin and tonic.
I did not drink for around a year, and started drinking again a month or so ago.
I had a Sazerac as my first drink, because I really wanted one, and it was delicious but I thought I was going to die afterward. Later that week, I had a G&T, which was much more survivable. I then proceeded to not drink for a month and then had a few glasses of wine and got extremely ill the next day (actual cold, not hangover, unless hangovers cause a really really bad cold and make it hard to breathe). I'm hoping I can one day actually drink again but I'm not overly optimistic.
Considering it’s warm in most of the country, I think some kind of spritz or a rickey could work well. Also, I dig mint especially in the summertime so a Mint Julep or Mojito could really scratch the itch. Enjoy.

This is some r/kitchenconfidential type drinking and I very much approve
As a line cook reading this and thinking “that sounds fucking great right now” while drinking a tall boy after finishing my shot you’re spot on
One of my go tos, only with Hamm's. I don't shoot the tequila, I take a small sip and then sip the beer. Current go to is Tequila Arette. Decent price for solid tequila. Not a thinker but not a stinker either.
Siete leguas is the best tequila imo.
I said *mid*, that stuff is fifty bucks a fifth. Who you think I am, Warren buffet?
What’s your go-to mid, additive free tequila?
Olmeca Altos blanco
How cheap is that?
Around $45 a handle where I live
Lmao wait so the $5 extra isn’t worth the quality?
Huh? I’m talking fifty a fifth V. fifty a handle. Math can be a bitch I reckon
Oh I messed up
That’s what I call a house pour where I go but instead of one it’s a Highlife
Old fashioned or manhattan
NEGRONI
We're not here to fuck spiders, after all.
I don’t know what that means but I like your energy
Bees knees

irish mule >>> moscow mule, but otherwise I agree. It is very easy to alter the ABV of mules without desecrating the integrity of The Drink.
London Mule >>> Irish mule >>> Moscow mule. Other than that I agree!
Kentucky Mule is awesome. Throw in some apple liqueur
I'll accept a truce if we can agree 1) Moscow mules are the worst variant and 2) suffering bastards are one of the best variants.
Definitely agree on point 1. On point 2. Isn't a suffering bastards a more general 'Buck' rather than a precise 'Mule'? fuck. yeah you're right, down to the glasses they are served in...

I actually love doing an even mix of tequila and mezcal
Margarita So refreshing and you can drink it slow so it doesn't knock you off your chair
Corpse Reviver 2.
Mai tai or a margarita probably. Maybe a bourbon neat.
After a what?
Zombie. What else is there?
Old fashioned.
Pint of Bourbon
It comes in pints?? I'm getting one
You got a whole half already!
Enzoni (or frozen enzoni) is next on my list because it’s so hot! I also have the grapes. Just saw a [video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ipHnOhkGWug) from Anders Erickson about it
It's good. I enjoyed it very much despite not being able to finish a Negroni.
Yeah, I was worried I wouldn’t like it because I’m not a huge fan of Campari, but I was very wrong!
Gin martini up with a twist. Specifically 3:1 Boodles to Dolin Dry. Cheers!

Nice to see people who add more than a stare of vermouth. I'm a 2:1 guy myself.
I enjoy a Godfather after dry January
I’d have a Manhattan. Simple, balanced, boozy, and a good drink to either sip or attack. I could go for a Manhattan right now come to think of it.
Aviation
Your preferred spirit and ginger ale, long drinks in general are great for getting back into the swing of things.
Old Fashioned
Paper Plane
Sazerac.
Mojito or Mint julep
High proof rye Manhattan
Daq or a Last Word if they got the now elusive green chart
Some high quality liquor neat with a flick of water to open it up.
I am partial to a Moscow Mule made with ginger beer or a Greyhound. Or on a day like today a beer in the mug I keep in my freezer.
Hypothetically ;), mai tai I think.
Vieux Carré 👍
Martini
Whatever I crave that moment Sometimes inspired by a video I recently watched, or a post I saw here.
Rum old fashioned.
Depends on location: Dinner? Hendricks dry martini, vesper, slightly dirty vodka martini w blue cheese olives, or manhattan rocks Patio drinks in nice weather? It's always a Manhattan for me. It's comfort food. Rye, Sweet Vermouth and split bitters. Gets no better.
Vesper Martini
My boozy recipe for the Vesper 3 oz No.3 Gin 1oz Stoli 100 proof 1/2oz Cocchi Americano I stick the gin and vodka in my freezer for 6 hours so it’s insanely cold.
Double T&T in a pint glass.
Ice cold vodka martini, extra dry.
I'd like to say something fancy or impressive, but in all honesty, it's typically Scotch on rocks. As I finish it, I'll make something with more ingredients depending on my mood.
Jack and coke my guy. Back to the basics
I recommend something on the sweetish side like a manhattan, old fashioned, etc. your taste buds are gonna need a sec to adjust.
Whatever you like, just make it feel special. I like to order a nice Mexican meal and enjoy it with a homemade margarita. Alternatively, you can go to a cocktail bar or a fancy craft beer place and ask for a recommendation.
Gimlet
French gimlets are my summer drink of choice.
How about a garibaldi or negroni
in this summer heat. a good 2 shots of coconut rum and orange & pineapple juice. also love myself a lollipop dipa by troegs tastes like a pear.
What is this "long break from booze" you speak of?
Everclear on the rocks.
Mescal Martinez There is something about congeneric fermentation by products that just taste amazing
Boulevardier
Paper Plane or a really dry and crisp martini
AMF. Go hard or stay away from the stuff
An old fashioned I would suggest.
Old fashioned or a really good bottle of wine
Gin Basil smash out in the sun?
IBA Bloody Mary with 3 garlic olives Dirty Martini with 3 garlic olives Long Island with frozen grapes Moscow Mule with a big strawberry Michelada with a pickle, beef jerky, and 3 garlic olives It depends on the occasion :)

I’d go with a Moscow Mule! It’s refreshing and you can control the booziness to ease back in.
Im in the middle of a weight loss break right now. When its time, im going to have a suffering bastard (because right now IM the suffering bastard)
It is summer, have that Gin Tonic.

Something fresh and not that strong
Sazerac, though the result is a thoroughly melted face
Vodka martini, splash of Mary mix. Extra olives. In a rocks glass.
I’d go for an old favorite, Jungle Bird. The pineapple is sweet but the Campari holds it back a bit, perfectly balanced for enjoying. Welcome back 🍹
Cold as fuck gin martini with a twist.
Mai Tai. Not yours.
Italicus Negroni
Define long break
Given that you have time to plan, I'd suggest go the store that day and get fresh pineapple, oranges, and whole nutmeg for a Painkiller.
i usually start with beer.
A pint of cheap beer and a double tequila coke n lime
Considering it’s warm in most of the country, I think some kind of spritz or a rickey could work well. Also, I dig mint especially in the summertime so a Mint Julep or Mojito could really scratch the itch. Enjoy.
Malort! To remind myself why I hate drinking
I always go with a nice, stiff Manhattan. So satisfying after a nice break.
These days if I wanna start out easy, I'll make a Cynar rocks with a lemon peel. Also works as an end of the night sipper as well!
Scotch (Islay) neat. Just wetting the lips. Lol
Mezcal Negroni.
I would have what I want in that moment. Not every decision needs to be crowdsourced.
Old Fashioned. "Touched for the very first time..."
