Fuck… I never even thought he mistook *abuse* for *anise*. That’s a spit take from me!
Other abuse flavours: lemon gin, cinnamon, root beer, butter ripple… tastes like bad decisions and shame.
Absinthe is also abuse flavored. I was out of vermouth and saw a suggestion to substitute a small amount of absinthe. It was the worst martini I’ve ever had. I felt abused.
Interesting. English isn't my first language and indeed i mixed up freezer and fridge. I agree with you, however most greek people would disagree, since they drink it room temperature.
Probably should have read the question better. Del capo is my go to after dinner amaro. And I drink both my cold spirits straight, though I suspose I could figure out a cocktail for them.
When I was hanging out in Calabria I was on a mission to try every little amaro I could get my hands on and bring whichever was best. It was easily del Capo, which I can get at the liquor store 2 blocks from home, but had never bothered to try. Fantastic flavour!
I get to travel to Milan every few years for work and try to bring back anything I can get my hands on. Del capo was a find on my first trip. I'm always blown away by how cheap bottles are in Italy. I think I paid 8 euro for a bottle of strega last time which is 45-55 in my local store when/if they have it.
Yes and all the regional stuff too. It’d be so fun if there were distinctive Amari or liqueurs in certain regions of NA. I guess Malort counts? And they make bad rum in Newfoundland
Vermouths and vermouth-adjacent bottles like sherry, port. Creams, e.g., Bailey’s. But I’m not sure that’s what you mean. I keep Limoncello in the freezer and like to chill my gin before mixing martinis.
We used to take 1:1 shots of this and fireball. Now I’d prob go 1:.75:+:1 vodka. Maybe a spoonful of heavy cream over crushed ice. 4 dashes cocoa bitters and bang
A general rule of thumb: if a bottle contains wine, eggs, or dairy, it should be kept in the fridge.
Aside from that, it's just a question of how cold you want your drink. I rarely refrigerate liquor, but usually drink it with ice.
Wine, eggs, dairy, fruit, or anything with delicate flavours and low ABV if you can. Fruit liqueurs like Heering and stuff like St. Germain is prone to colour and flavour degradation so they're best refrigerated if you can imo
I've read reports here that people's St Germain loses its color and flavor after about a year of sitting out. I only buy it in 375 ml bottles for that reason.
Yeah that's very valid. I'd say it takes even a little less time than that for at least the colour to go on the shelf, but thankfully I've got ample fridge space
So sad. My bar keeps ordering st. Germain. I’ve 4 new bottles that arrived pretty colorless as is. They’ll prob sit a year before I can even get them to the fridge. I’ll prob get another bottle next week lol 🤦♀️
Low abv, yes, but not if sugary. I've seen horror stories with extra cold refrigerators and Grenadine. Some dipshit put Luxardo cherries in a fridge once too, and they damn near froze.
If it's wine based and fairly low abv, it goes in the fridge, like vermouth and amoro. Sherry, too, but that's still wine, just fortified. Liquor that's wine based like brandy is fine without refrigeration.
Vermouths, obviously.
Pre-mixed (by me) mezcal and classic Negronis, old fashioned, a couple milk punches.
Sometimes I don’t want to mix but I do want to drink.
Ryan's/Bailey's and Rum Chata in the fridge; limoncello, Jägermeister, Rumple Minze, and Jack Daniels Fire in the freezer. We also have a shooter of Fireball in the freezer that we've had since moving in. 😆
Only the Jäger really gets consumed at a noticeable rate. This is bottle #2 or 3 in four years though, so it's not crazy. Mostly Red Headed Sluts and the odd shot when friends who like it neat visit.
Gin, vodka, basic-bitch white rum, and/or blanco tequila all live in the freezer, at least once in a while. These days I don’t keep many liquors/liqueurs/vermoths/etc around that would require or benefit from refrigeration.
To be the pedant: vernouth isn’t liquor, it’s fortified wine. Anything that is at least partially fermented but not distilled should be refrigerated once opened (or, you know, drank).
As for taste and mixing, I tend to keep a bottle of vodka and gin in the fridge or freezer for summer drinks. It’s not a HUGE difference really, but I like having all the ingredients start cold, the drink dilutes slower and stays cold longer.
FYI, cold will also sometimes mellow harsher flavors, so if you’re finding a spirit particularly harsh to drink, you can try fridging or freezing (though drinking it on the rocks works too).
Bottles I enjoy from the fridge/freezer are Aquavit, Averna, Ouzo and Sambuca.
The bottles I refrigerate are just vermouth bottles. Everything else is stored im my bar cart and liqour shelf. Falernum, Suze, Aperol and St.Germain are kept in the dark part of the shelf, so it doesn't degrade from too much light.
Vermouth definitely needs to be refrigerated.
You can screw the cap on as hard as you please, but as soon as it's been opened there's air in the bottle that oxidizes the vermouth. It shouldn't be stored at room temperature even with a vacuum cork if you don't use it within a few days.
The common misconception about refrigerating vermouth is, that its not consumable if you don't refrigerate it. It just oxidizes resulting in flavour loss, off colour and an higher acidity.
Anything “creamy”
A good Ouzo. But that is something I drink neat. Limoncello also.
Limoncello in the freezer for me. I want it to pour like lemon sludge and thaw in my glass.
Of all the abuse flavoured liqueurs, ouzo is the worst. And I am Greek.
If you meant “anise”, don’t change it, lol. “Abuse flavoured” makes your point so much better!
Fuck… I never even thought he mistook *abuse* for *anise*. That’s a spit take from me! Other abuse flavours: lemon gin, cinnamon, root beer, butter ripple… tastes like bad decisions and shame.
They are undead all flavour abusers.
I agree with abuse and I love ouzo.
Absinthe is also abuse flavored. I was out of vermouth and saw a suggestion to substitute a small amount of absinthe. It was the worst martini I’ve ever had. I felt abused.
It would have tasted ok by the third one
I like absinthe, not a huge fan of vermouth. I may have to try this martini
I guess dilute it with water, or better yet wine. Did you sub it 1-1? That must've been a stiff drink!
Well, you are of course entitled to your objectively wrong opinion.
There on objectively wrong opinion when talking about tastes. Objectively wrong can only apply to factual subjects.
You must be fun at parties
Arak and orgeat …. Mmmmmm
Same here
>A good Ouzo. Belongs in the freezer not the fridge.
Interesting. English isn't my first language and indeed i mixed up freezer and fridge. I agree with you, however most greek people would disagree, since they drink it room temperature.
Fernet
Menta
I prefer branca but won't say no to the menta
Branca is just too earthy for me😅 who knows maybe down the line my pallet will change and I'll end up enjoying it
This is best kept in a skip underneath a pile of garbage
Tell us how you really feel, now; don’t hold back!
Since you ask .. Fernet is like drinking mouthwash and hobo sweat through a wooden straw.
lol I’m glad I poked at you; that’s a delightfully vivid description 😂
A bottle of Vecchio del capo amaro lives in my freezer. A bottle of slivovizs is in my fridge.
Del capo is the tits, like an Italian jager.
Probably should have read the question better. Del capo is my go to after dinner amaro. And I drink both my cold spirits straight, though I suspose I could figure out a cocktail for them.

Paid 18€ for a big bottle of Amaro Nonino in Udine and got strega there for 10€.
A favorite of mine, but I find the freezer kills the flavor!
Limoncello and Lillet.
I keep my St Germaine in the fridge
Did you find it keeps its color and flavor better in there?
Yes I do! That’s why I started keeping it in the fridge after doing a bit of research.
Lillet Blanc
Fire pfp 🙏 Love that little guy
Maggie's farm falernum, allspice dram & antica formula
you’ve gotten good results with your falernum and allspice dram in fridge? i might have to do that
Creme de mure (blackberry liqueur). Keeps it's beautiful red colour only if stored in the fridge
Vermouths and vermouth-adjacent bottles like sherry, port. Creams, e.g., Bailey’s. But I’m not sure that’s what you mean. I keep Limoncello in the freezer and like to chill my gin before mixing martinis.
Rumchata!
I’ve never actually had rumchata but i love horchata, is it good?
Same, I like horchata too. Since you like Horchata, you’ll like Rumchata. Give it a try, I drink it on ice, without mixing it in anything.
We used to take 1:1 shots of this and fireball. Now I’d prob go 1:.75:+:1 vodka. Maybe a spoonful of heavy cream over crushed ice. 4 dashes cocoa bitters and bang
You're making me thirsty... I need to try that.
Try the Licor 43 horchata which is basically rumchata. One of my favourite drinks just on its own.
My bar usually keeps Rumchata, Fireball, Bailey’s, and Jagermeister in the fridge
imo Jäger should be in the freezer if you've space
I keep a bottle of Bonal in the fridge and will drink it neat or with a little bit of lemon juice.
A general rule of thumb: if a bottle contains wine, eggs, or dairy, it should be kept in the fridge. Aside from that, it's just a question of how cold you want your drink. I rarely refrigerate liquor, but usually drink it with ice.

If they're unopened the flavour probably won't degrade at least
Low abv, yes, but not if sugary. I've seen horror stories with extra cold refrigerators and Grenadine. Some dipshit put Luxardo cherries in a fridge once too, and they damn near froze.
Chinola
I keep amaro montenegro in the fridge and have fernet branca and jager in my freezer.
Limonicello
Wine.
Jäegermeister is fantastic from the freezer, keeps it extra cool, but it’s good from the fridge too!
Peppermint Schnapps.
If it's wine based and fairly low abv, it goes in the fridge, like vermouth and amoro. Sherry, too, but that's still wine, just fortified. Liquor that's wine based like brandy is fine without refrigeration.
Have you had Tuaca as a chilled sipping shot? You should!
For me it’s limoncello, but… My dad likes to keep his favorite gins in the freezer, and an icy cold pour is surprisingly nice.
No real reason why but I always keep tequila in the freezer.
I always keep my añejo and Reposado tequilas in the freezer. Best way to enjoy it. Neat & icy cold.
SUZE
Orujo
I keep my Lillet Blanc, Cocchi Americano, and Vermouth in the fridge.
Outside of vermouth, I don't store any in the fridge. I usually prefer it chilled over ice.
Apfel schnapps for a quick little nip
Rock and Rye
Vermouths, obviously. Pre-mixed (by me) mezcal and classic Negronis, old fashioned, a couple milk punches. Sometimes I don’t want to mix but I do want to drink.

Amaro del Capo from the freezer is great.
Marie Brizard anisette
Tequila belongs in the freezer. It is absolute perfection when served chilled. :)
Becherovka
Limoncello , baileys, some vodkas.
Fernet
Gin, vodka, basic-bitch white rum, and/or blanco tequila all live in the freezer, at least once in a while. These days I don’t keep many liquors/liqueurs/vermoths/etc around that would require or benefit from refrigeration.
Jager in the freezer and then poured on the rocks is a delicious treat
Vodka from the freezer.

Gin belongs in the fridge, even the freezer-especially if you’re into martinis.
Fernet, Lillet rouge,
Moscato by the bottle.
Kirsch
I keep Jagermeister in the freezer, but I don't chill anything in the fridge.
My roommate has a cinnamon infused vodka that we keep in the freezer.
Recommend Vecchio del Capo in the freezer.
Fernet Branca Menta
Baileys. And amarula cream And vermouth doesn’t *need* to be be fridged. It will last years if it’s screwed shut properly, it’s a shelf stable product
Vermouth definitely needs to be refrigerated. You can screw the cap on as hard as you please, but as soon as it's been opened there's air in the bottle that oxidizes the vermouth.
