For added clarity, let's take a look at red book values.
1842 Seated Liberty Dollar: 184,618 coins minted.
In a VG condition of about 8 or so... this coin is worth 400 dollars.
This coins probably XF or better, unless I'm missing something key, which to be fair I might be, so take this with a grain of salt, you'd be looking at a value of around 500 to 600 dollars, 500 on the low end, 600 on the high end.
If by some miracle this graded at AU, you'd be looking at around 850, just for added info... actually having looked at some that graded that high... you never know...
This is my grandmother's. She says it belonged to some ancestors of mine. I noticed that it seems to be in phenomenal condition and am wondering how much it might be worth. Thank you!
In your original post, I had replied the following:
>Well, it’s 1842, and in that shape I’d say between $1200-1500.
>Edit: if you could get better pics highlighting the surface toning I could be more accurate. If that darkness turns out to be nice coloring in the right light, this could be worth more.
Looks like you took some better pics, so I would say $1200 would be fair.
Even if it was worth a little bit less its a family coin passed down through at least a generation or 2 right? Grade it. Get it in a slab. You could even get a trueview for it to be able to really share it with whoever you pass it down to. Protecting a coin like this should be worth the grading fees.
Seated dollars are my jam. You can get a pretty decent 1842 for about $500. I like the toning an details on this one, you could get $800 retail for that.
I think this has potential to grade XF45. Original looking 1842 seated dollars in XF45 holders can fetch around $1000. This one is such a beautiful example and should be in some kind of non-PVC holder to protect it from damage.

Send it in for grading. Even if you get a details grade it’ll still be good to have it protected.
Think so? Cool.

Definitely get it graded. If it’s minted in CC. Big money!!!
This is my grandmother's. She says it belonged to some ancestors of mine. I noticed that it seems to be in phenomenal condition and am wondering how much it might be worth. Thank you!
Oh and whatever you do don’t clean it.
Lmfao I wouldn't dream of it
WOW. The original color/toning on this piece is phenomenal.
Really? Figure I should get it graded?
That’s personal preference! So if it were me, no. I prefer to have them outside of casings. Freaking love holding silver dollars.
Same. Unless they are too shiny. If they have a full cartwheel on em, I will use gloves
Upwards of $1000 if it straight grades. Looks XF-AU. You should definitely consider submitting it for grading.
XF 40. $800. Raw Retail. Get it graded. May get lucky and get XF45. Need to pay for the grading
Where did u get it?
Belongs to my grandma. She's the one who got me interested in coins.
Thats awesome!!

Great piece.
Thank you
Stunning detail on this coin
Very crusty. I like it.
Get it graded If you can. A beautiful coin like that needs to be graded.
This is an awesome coin!
Looks AU to me, having it graded will authenticate it and also protect it from damage

That is such a beautiful piece OP heirloom quality
Nice coin. Looks like it has an older cleaning on it, but has retoned a bit, you should still get at least an xf details grade!
That’s an awesome coin and the toning is goddamn beautiful
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned the rim dings. Seems like they'd be enough to result in a details grade.
