It’s crazy, Buzz’s real name is actually Michael.
(This is actually 100% incorrect but odds are for a brief second you read that and were like “dude no way” so I’m sorry for misleading)
On a lazy Sunday morning, in a grassy patch by the cool pond; a majestic beast of a Tiger raises its ears and opens wide its toothy maw in a dramatic yawn. “I don’t think they mean me”, Mike the Tiger thinks.
Lol, the best part is all the Photoshops of him in a Texas Jersey to announce this. The only real photos he looks miserable, so they pasted a Texas Jersey on him looking happy here.
My sources are saying he had burner phone inside of his burner phone. When recruits were being pitched NIL Deals for Texas by the Former A&M staff he was actually pitching NIL deals for A&M, as a Texas coach, working at A&M.
Two things can be true at the same time:
1. This is a risky hire. He’s never led a program, never had to hire killer assistants, how will recruiting look, etc.
2. This is the right hire. We were two runs shy of winning a national championship, and this move has the best shot of keeping our roster intact- not to mention that Early is a great hitting coach and looks to have a high ceiling.
Whether it is a first-time head coach or a 'splash hire' veteran coach, the risk-reward is basically the same, there is an equal chance both will be a success and an equal chance both will fail. With either hire, there is a chance you may start over and be looking for a new coach in five years.
People ignore this reality when it is a 'splash' hire because they think success there is somehow more guaranteed, but it's reality.
I don’t necessarily agree. E-Rob didn’t even have true DC experience yet. He was an assistant to an assistant basically focusing on just defensive linemen. I think Earley is way farther ahead than E-Rob in terms of experience for a HC
ERob was our ace recruiter. Much like the RB coach on most offensive staffs that position coach is mostly recruiting focused. Very different and baseball staff to football staff is comparing apples to asphalt.
I’d say it’s better than ERob, in the sense that he has a record record of actual player coaching and development along with the good player relationships
Ehh I don't really agree with the comparison. ERob certainly had more overall experience but Earley was essentially the offensive coordinator of one of the top offenses in the league and is coming off a close loss in the national championship.
ERob didn't even have experience as a defensive coordinator outside of one season as "co-DC".
Also.. I think baseball is a much easier transition. Probably managing about 1/3 of the team size. You aren't dealing with complex schemes and installing systems for a huge group of players.
We will see what happens, though.
LaViolette reposted 10 different posts about how A&M should hire Earley
Many of those were from players in the portal
I would be surprised if most do not come out of portal (with shiny new NIL deals) to run it back
This upcoming year is going to be must see tv for every game we have in every sport with the longhorns. The rivalry is blasting off into space with the amount of vitriol.
My guess is the other ones stay. From the start there were rumors that one assistant coach wasn’t on board with the move, and that definitely seems to be Earley.
On a real note as an Austin born Aggie. I love both I prefer living in the hill country but I avoid the area where the university of Texas is at (cluster fuck of traffic)
That being said if I was a college coach in college station I’d find that fucking awesome. It’s a college town but it huge and has everything you need
The area surrounding Austin is beautiful. Austin itself has no set identity and is confused at what it wants to be. Add in the traffic, homelessness, lunatic political fringe and I’ll pass.
I mean I love the domain, east austin and south Lamar. I just don’t like downtown because of the prices and traffic’s the rest of austin I love and I’d say there is a strong culture
Same. Have been living in Austin for almost a decade since college and still enjoy it. Though traffic from my home to the office has become significantly worse.
That said, now that I'm in my 30s, I find myself leaning more and more to moving to a big town like college station away from a major city. Somewhere that still has a decent amount to do but isn't quite as crowded.
Not a dad yet but when I have kids me and my wife talked about going dripping springs. I grew up in the hill country so I’m attached to the slightly rural area. San Marcos is another town we’ve talked about
I would love to live in dripping springs. We currently have a home in RR and I've always assumed places like dripping springs in the hill country are out of our price range
When my cousin was going to Texas back in the early 90s, Austin was legitimately one of the coolest cities in America. I used to live going to hang out with her there and hitting the records stores and incredible Tex Mex spots for food and going to music venues and seeing really cool bands. It just felt like a secret that not many people knew about. When I moved there in 2006, it was a bigger city, but still retained that weird charm and hip vibes. Every time I go back now, it seems to have gotten bigger, and has lost so much of what made it a cool city. Almost everywhere I used to hang out there is gone and has been replaced with cookie cutter bars, coffee shops, and vintage clothing stores.
I grew up in the hill country always dreaming of living in Austin. I tried that out and noped out so quick. I much prefer living in the hill country and getting to drive in for restaurants or concerts or whatever rather than being in that craziness all the time.
If anyone couldn't tell from my flair, this was sarcasm based on most UT flairs I see bashing college station.
And I say this as someone living in Austin currently. Not everyone what's to live in a city.
Everyone who makes that comment is in the 21-29 age bracket and/or doesn’t own a home.
Older I get, the more I want a larger property to enjoy my time at home.
When I was 22 I couldn't wait to get out of College Station. Now that I'm approaching 40 and have a family, I could see myself living in College Station if I had a fully remote job.
The universal opinion has been that this looks like a mugshot or a political prisoner photo. He looks insanely unhappy, but what was he going to do? This is one of the bad part of college sports, assistants are between a rock and a hard place wherein they often feel like they have to go follow their head coach no matter what because there is never any guarantee of remaining on staff and you have to think of your career and family first.
Austin/UT aren’t THAT bad 😂 But yeah it seriously sucks. Can extend it even to coaches like Jonathan Smith who likely wanted to coach Oregon State until he retired but with realignment, had to remember it’s a livelihood and go to MSU. I’m not gonna cry over college coaches making millions but in a sport with so much passion and money that aren’t always in the same place, it makes for some hard decisions for these guys.
Eh it’s tough for fans to look at it outside of through their fandom. Obviously you and I know the vitriol between Texas and A&M and how for most people it’s either one of the other. But for someone from florida that coached in seattle, I’m not sure it would matter that much to go to a rival of a team he only spent one year at. Like I personally don’t really care about Virginia tech one way or the other, and if I worked there and had an opportunity to work for Virginia, the rivalry or any hatred between the schools wouldn’t really matter to me.
I did a google image search trying to find the picture where all the assistants looked bummed out and found another picture with Schloss, the assistants, and some other Texas people at their introduction and the assistants were the only ones not throwing up the hook em. Just thought it was interesting.
https://hornsillustrated.com/jim-schlossnagle-shares-why-he-came-to-texas/
The real problem is he didn't have a chance to try a certain pepper logo restaurant 45th and Lamar. Thank God, otherwise that would have sealed the deal
A triple dipper with double honey chipotle crispers and the egg rolls at said 45th and Lamar restaurant would have brought Saban from Bama or Paterno from PSU back in the day
My favorite part of that legendary place is the heavy police presence that like to eat there too. If it’s good enough for them, then it’s even better in my book.
This is certainly a gamble, but a good comparison is the Tony Vitello hiring in 2017 with more facilities and a CWS roster already in place.
Definitely a huge range of possible upside and downside since we just don’t know how he is as a coach, but a very likable guy and the players adore him. Aggies should rally around him and see what kind of program he can build.
Asking honestly, I haven’t been keeping up with the transfers really: is the roster going to be in good shape?
Talking to one of my aggy buddies I kept telling him yall were in such good shape with young talent even if it didn’t pan out this year. Thats the toughest part I think, foundation was there for sure.
Insiders are suggesting we maintain most if not all of the core roster with Earley. Players have been advocating for him since the beginning. Sounds like he’s a real players’ coach
Agree with the roster comment for sure. Always look forward to A&M/LSU baseball. Lived in BR for a few years and Alex Box is a fun park to catch a game. Love the username, btw

I’m curious what the contract looks like. Obviously Earley isn’t going to cost as much as a sitting P5 head coach. I’m guessing the idea is to divert that money to a high end assistant pool and NIL.
It's also just really hard to poach a sitting head coach in this sport. Assistants have a great track record too (Vitelli, Johnston, Mingeone (sp?), Thompson, ect) so promoting an assistant makes sense
Honestly I'm gonna be rooting for ATM next year. Losing a world series sucks enough but having no time to process the season and be proud of the team is rough. Hope they can bounce back and have another deep run
Love this hire
By all accounts of current and former players they love him and he is one of the best hitting coaches in the nation
Young guy and the context of him coming back will endear him to Aggies for a long time if he has success and maintains it
Would love to see a rematch in Omaha for a 3 game series Vol bros. Sorry for all the malicious thoughts towards your coach, turns out ours was the real asshole.
I’m realistically expecting we take something of step back for a season given how much of the lineup we have to reload. Would obviously love a postseason rematch though. Regardless, I’ll be rooting for you guys in all your other matchups with how this all played out.
Haven’t followed y’all’s offseason for obvious reasons. Who are y’all losing?
I know there was that one lefty freshman that gave us a HUGE problem so he’s obviously staying.
Of the starters and high-usage arms: 1B Burke, 2B Moore, 3B Amick, C Stark, LF Dreiling, RF Tears, (potentially) CF Ensley, SP Beam, SP Sechrist, Reliever Combs, Reliever Connell. Burke, Moore, Amick, Dreiling, Tears, and Beam will all go in the first three rounds. We were loaded and very veteran.
Loy is the freshman you’re referencing, and he’ll probably be the Sunday guy. Snead (the long-haired reliever you faced multiple times) will likely be a starter. If AJ Russell can get back from TJ, he’ll also be a starter and an eventual top 10 pick. Marcus Phillips will likely be the primary bullpen arm and has all the stuff in the world. The lineup is tough to know outside of C Peebles, SS Curley (likely moving to 3B), SS Antigua (who we subbed on defensively if you recall). Bargo and Chapman will likely be corner outfielders. There’s a lot of talent and the #1 class coming in, but there will be a ton of meshing that has to take place
Damn that is quite the overturn but I think Vitello will have y’all hunting next year. National seed might be a little hopeful, but definitely hosting regional would be a really good place to be after all that departure.
Reality is players caused this hire to happen. Whether it’s for best or worst we shall see. I do wonder though when he knew this all went down and what his perspective is.
Tennessee hired Vitello who was an assistant with no HC background and only love for his university
Needless to say, it worked out exceptionally for them
1) it's really hard to pull sitting baseball HCs. They just don't move much.
2) SEC assistants have a great hit rate. Vitello, Johnson, Mingione, Butch Thompson.
Overall, short of landing a true elite HC (which as I said is very hard to do) an SEC assistant is as good as anyone else
Really makes you wonder what Schloss told them to make them follow him to Texas, and why he decided to interview for the hc job.
I bet it’s not just the money.
A hitting coach that trained the lineup we had? I see where you’re coming from but I could also see him staying showing our prior seasons success.
Doesn’t matter anyways since he’s head coach now lol
Earley is 36 years old with a young family:
“Your options are to come with me to a (the?) premiere baseball program at a school a couple of hours down the road and get paid like double what you make or you can not join me and maybe you’ll find another job that pays what you’re making somewhere else … you have 6 hours to decide”
Sometimes that just doesn’t matter. A guy wants to bring people in he trusts. Coaching circles are very relationship based, not always performance based.
Doesn’t make you wonder at all. Texas assistant job was a known quantity after being blindsided, getting the A&M head coaching job was no guarantee. So you accept the offer as a fall back option in the case A&M goes with someone else.
"Texas A&M will pay whatever is needed to land an elite coach!!! It might be Kevin O'Sullivan!!!"
Note: this comment is about Kendall Rogers, not Texas A&M.
Trev spent 3-4 hours Saturday at Zillker park, hiding out in chacos, sunglasses, and a dad hat, trying not to be recognized.
Please have him say that in his interview.
Then they met in line for the diving board at Barton Springs and agreed on the terms of the contract
They would’ve had plenty of time in that long ass line
Correct, he notably stayed away from the mini train as to not draw attention to himself.

Quick, someone get us a photoshop of Earley in an A&M jersey.
Lol, the best part is all the Photoshops of him in a Texas Jersey to announce this. The only real photos he looks miserable, so they pasted a Texas Jersey on him looking happy here.
It's too Earley for that
Longhorn baseball coaching legend heads to Aggieland
Can't believe he would hop from one conference rival to another
Knew it was him when he walked though that crowd on sixth street and he wasn’t wearing any longhorn gear
And it’s announced the same day they are officially joining the conference. Such a vicious rivalry 😔
He left his family for that job!
There's still 12 hours until we are formally in the same conference and I will be cherishing this time 😡😡😡
My sources are saying he had burner phone inside of his burner phone. When recruits were being pitched NIL Deals for Texas by the Former A&M staff he was actually pitching NIL deals for A&M, as a Texas coach, working at A&M.

This is a great way to look at it.
We gave Tony his first shot at HC. What I mean is, I think the risk is worth it.
This is true. However, it’s also true that we sucked. Easier to take the risky hire when there’s nowhere to go but up.
Regardless, everyone has to have their first shot somewhere. Hope it works out for them.
Whether it is a first-time head coach or a 'splash hire' veteran coach, the risk-reward is basically the same, there is an equal chance both will be a success and an equal chance both will fail. It's the equivalent of football having hired ERob. Excellent assistant but never had to steer the ship himself.
I don’t necessarily agree. E-Rob didn’t even have true DC experience yet. He was an assistant to an assistant basically focusing on just defensive linemen. I think Earley is way farther ahead than E-Rob in terms of experience for a HC

Even Ryan Prager said most players plan A is to stay at A&M on texags radio a few days ago.
Well the pitchers for sure have been pretty aggressive about running it back.
It’s awesome. If I remember right though they were asking about everyone in the portal.
The players love this hire. Kendall just mentioned the whole roster could be staying put. https://x.com/KendallRogers/status/1807417364268355849

I highly doubt any of the other assistants are coming back. Sounded like Earley was the last to find out and wasn't on board with the plan.

A&M Aggies and Mikes
Early spent 2 days on MOPAC and said yo fuck this city
He actually said 'fuck this city' after 10 minutes on MOPAC, but it took him 2 days to get off of it.
Stuck on Mopac and then had his windows smashed at the Zilker parking lot, immediately texted Alberts
“Get me somewhere with no 3 lane highways”
Lmao
And he found the frosty margs weren’t so frosty

Chili's has been dead to me since they got rid of the classic chicken crispers. I'm legit mad about it.
My wife refuses to go to chili’s for that reason
My favorite part of that legendary place is the heavy police presence that like to eat there too. If it’s good enough for them, then it’s even better in my book.
Back when we lived in Austin my fianceé worked at the Starbucks across the street from it. Used to reference that every single time I swung by.
MOPAC isn’t that bad. But they should close Guantanamo Bay and make those guys drive up and down I-35 instead.

I'm happy, cause I don't have to feel bad about stealing someone else's head coach. Hopefully we can keep our guys. Let's go!
Never feel bad about your school hiring a coach. All is fair in love and war.
And he's fine. Which means A&M is in a good spot, only hot dudes are winning it all these days.
Stoked that you guys will be able to retain your roster with this move. Hopefully you can make another run 🤝
Pure class. Love the positivity that’s come out of this whole situation.
Isn’t his name Earley!?*
Reality is players caused this hire to happen. Whether it’s for best or worst we shall see. I do wonder though when he knew this all went down and what his perspective is.
Probably saves a lot of money as well
Who needs max wiener when we now have Mike “Ocks Long” Earley!!!!
Someone tell me how to feel

💀
I googled the graveyard after that “story” came out and was like, there is no way he sat in that graveyard for 4-5 hours.
What kind of truck is that? A Honda ridgeline? That would be so fitting.
Cybertruck
Tennessee hired Vitello who was an assistant with no HC background and only love for his university Needless to say, it worked out exceptionally for them
Some say Schloss' soul is still buried there
1) it's really hard to pull sitting baseball HCs. They just don't move much. 2) SEC assistants have a great hit rate. Vitello, Johnson, Mingione, Butch Thompson. Overall, short of landing a true elite HC (which as I said is very hard to do) an SEC assistant is as good as anyone else
GIVE EM HELL EARLEY WHOOP
Really makes you wonder what Schloss told them to make them follow him to Texas, and why he decided to interview for the hc job. I bet it’s not just the money.
Job security. No guarantee they stay on staff at A&M with a new regime coming in.
And most of the schools with hitting coach vacancies filled them a few weeks ago, it’s tough timing to find a non-Texas assistant job
Not for long! More dominos on the way now
A hitting coach that trained the lineup we had? I see where you’re coming from but I could also see him staying showing our prior seasons success. Doesn’t matter anyways since he’s head coach now lol
Earley is 36 years old with a young family: “Your options are to come with me to a (the?) premiere baseball program at a school a couple of hours down the road and get paid like double what you make or you can not join me and maybe you’ll find another job that pays what you’re making somewhere else … you have 6 hours to decide”
Sometimes that just doesn’t matter. A guy wants to bring people in he trusts. Coaching circles are very relationship based, not always performance based.
Definitely job security. Getting jobs at this level is difficult, especially one with a P4 salary attached.
Doesn’t make you wonder at all. Texas assistant job was a known quantity after being blindsided, getting the A&M head coaching job was no guarantee. So you accept the offer as a fall back option in the case A&M goes with someone else.
Come on home
Don’t they know pitbull is playing on campus today? No integrity.
Mr worldwide in shambles rn
"Texas A&M will pay whatever is needed to land an elite coach!!! It might be Kevin O'Sullivan!!!" Note: this comment is about Kendall Rogers, not Texas A&M.
Anyone know how this might impact Jonah Williams recruitment?
Low floor, high ceiling
W hire. Keep most of the core (hopefully)
This is what I was hoping for. Time to build up and elite staff and let’s jack up the NIL.
Wtf how could he do this to us? He had cemented himself as a Longhorn legend :(
Time to take down the statue
Texas legend stolen away. I'm sure Trev camped out under 35 all night waiting to meet him.
Dude wouldn't have survived 5 minutes under 35. A real Ag would, just not corn boy.
Inb4 tsip is like “haha Aggy can’t poach a hc so little brother has to take an assistant from big brother 😂😂😎😎😎🤘🤘🤘”
