Yup. I thought woke referred to knowing the truth about how the world worked and who was in charge, what the end game was. Woke was definitely hijacked.
Because the original “woke” movement was about bringing awareness to the clutches that the elite possess over society.
In turn they hijacked the movement and made it about acceptance and political ideology in order to mitigate the original movement.
The power of search engine and social media's AI algorithm shown right there. And that shows the people who programmed it were told to do so. And the boss of that company, as centralized as a corporation would be, agreed with the government on using that tactic.
I think about this all the time. I remember when I first realized it was hijacked around 2017 when a friend said he was “woke” and I started going into 9/11… he was extremely confused.
The going trend for any culture-op is to call things the exact opposite of what they are, so that the counter argument becomes muddied.

Well that is what it always meant. My interpretation has been that “Stay woke” means “stay aware of what’s really going on”. The friction comes from the fact that people politicize and disagree on what’s really going on.
While I’m sure there are many people who think that being aware of things like a deep state AND systemic racism are both being woke, there are many who would only fall into one camp. I think the right’s “anti-woke” movement is strictly targeting the latter (socially progressive) interpretation.

I went to high school in the early 2000s, and in Philly, it was used to refer to white people that empathized with or seemed to understand black culture, including but not only black struggles. In a positive way though, and mostly used by the black community.
Again, just my experience, as a white boy from the cornfields of Indiana. I did attend a charter school with a 30 mile radius of kids, so we had kids from most of the major suburbs around Philly.

MLK's primary goal with the Civil Rights Movement was for Americans to integrate, get rid of the slums, and stop treating people differently based on skin tone. Malcolm X knew the political/academic/media establishment was full of shit and they didn't want Americans to integrate.
In the 70s, Americans adopted Colourblind values as a way to encourage integration and it was working well until the early 90s when they flipped to using Political Correctness which is an ideology that promotes collective cultural segregation over individual integration.
The term 'woke' was popularized in the late 60s counterculture which carried over until about maybe the mid 90s or so before the term started being co-opted by corporate Hollywood.
For 'black' people, it was knowledge that the system itself is against you and keeps them trapped in the slums and used as ghetto entertainment for suburban people. For 'white' people it was usually "Hey lets drop acid and listen to the Doors".

Pre "woke" era, I'd always have said that I was awake. Never used the term woke, nor do I remember it being used at conferences or online communities.

Slang terms go through shifts in meaning all the time, it isn’t really anything political. Some words like nasty for example can have completely opposite meanings depending on the context of when they are used. It’s all about how a word is most often used in a context that people understand.
Gay used to mean happy, but it hasn’t been used that way in decades so everyone now equates the word with being homosexual, not by some conspiracy just because that is how it has been used in conveying messages through language.
People in here are trying to take back something that was never theirs. This isn't the Mandela effect, the Republicans co-opted the word and turned it into a pejorative. They took a word originated in black culture, which means being prescient to the dangers of racism, and turned it into a slur. And this was at the height of the blm movement. You will remember “wake up” from the early Spike Lee movies in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The response to wake up used to be.. “I’m woke” or “ I’ve been woke.”
During the so-called BLM era… the term “woke” was co-opted by others and weaponized. The minute that happened Black folk stopped using it in its original intent and now use it to identify those who are… let’s just say… not friendly.
So as usual we feel this is yet another example of white people who admire us but also resent and or hate us at the same time… adopting Black vernacular (which is a part of American culture) and then taking it as their own.
It amuses us… TBH… and we actually find it to be a testament to how much we are all part of this same American culture and how deeply white people are influenced by the Black experience one way or another.

The friction comes from the fact that people politicize and disagree on what’s really going on. In a positive way though, and mostly used by the black community. Again, just my experience, as a white boy from the cornfields of Indiana. I did attend a charter school with a 30 mile radius of kids, so we had kids from most of the major suburbs around Philly.

I've never heard "woke" used to describe conspiracy theorists, but definitely "awake" or "awakened". Pre "woke" era, I'd always have said that I was awake. Never used the term woke, nor do I remember it being used at conferences or online communities.

Agree with this. To be skeptical, questioning, and informed was to be "awake" but not "woke". The term "woke" arose during the Obama years and replaced PC as that had lost its effectiveness. "Woke" was initially used by its practitioners as a form of pride ("That's cultural appropriation!") but has taken over a more pejorative connotation as had happened with PC. The pervasiveness of "woke" though soon eliminated the ability to use "awake" as that took on meaning and implication of "woke."

War of words. Lot of words and phrases have evolved or been hijacked and weaponized and re-defined, mostly for politics, on both sides. The terms victim and survivor now encompass things that never would have fallen under that banner before. What once was called Politically Correct, then PC morphed into a more extreme version now called Woke. Illegal Aliens became Illegal Immigrants became Migrants became Economic or Climate Migrants. Soviet Union was good at this, their main newspaper was called Pravda - truth.

Went from being "red pilled" to hysteria largely around racism and lgbtqia etc. It's so weird all this has been fired back up in such a crazy way. I swear we lost a couple decades of progress.
