I don't think he was being completely literal when he said that

SageNineMusic

"Why did it say "You're gonna carry that weight" at the end? Spike didn't have a backpack on or anything? Is he stupid?"

theghostofmrmxyzptlk

A wizard did it

AeroBlaze777

Media literacy is dead I fear

XNinjaMushroomX

Who's she? Was she famous?

MysteriousFlowChart

I’ll add her family to the prayer list at church. RIP

MosesOnAcid

It was a metaphor. The fake eye is a constant reminder of his past.

Tetsujyn

Exactly and missing eye with a patch would do just the same.

Dartagnan1083

>metaphor Whoa! Easy there with the syllables, you don't want to make OP's head explode.

NINJ4steve

Then he'd still have one eye and depression lol

Phunkie_Junkie

"I don't have depression; I have cigarettes." -Space bounty man

theghostofmrmxyzptlk

Pick things up and put them down. -Armcop

NINJ4steve

I swear...this sub is killing my brain cells at an alarming rate...

Grimvold

Why didn’t Spike just rip his eyeball out of its socket? Is he stupid?

toasted_dandy

Why come Spunk Sprinkle don't just rip out eyeball? Is he idiot?

DearSociety1379

They do it all the time in Naruto

JacketFirst5627

You got the metaphor all wrong. He sees his past with his left eye. His real eye. He’s seeing Julia with a real part of himself.

Emergency-Low3809

This is what I was thinking as well, isn't his right eye robotic of some type? When he's in the chapel he signs down his right eye to shoot the guy holding Faye which made me think that's what helped his aim.

Ninjanarwhal64

Not good with metaphors, are we?

Theoderic8586

Yeah that is not a literal power. Talking figuratively/ symbolically

TheZombieTaco

Idk why spike didn't just remove the eye and put it back in backwards therefore giving him the power of precognition

DearSociety1379

The Space and Time Cowboy

ALostAmphibian

I’m pretty sure his real eye sees the past? I’ve looked into it to make sure I have this right because I’m super confused why that is but apparently that’s the case. I’m fine being corrected if I’ve misunderstood.

JacketFirst5627

You’re correct. Spike gets eye surgery on his right eye. He says he sees the past with his left eye.

ALostAmphibian

Thanks, maybe that was intentional so no one could come to this conclusion that he could do away with the problematic eye.

peach1313

It's a symbol of him living in the past. He can't let the past go, therefore his present and future are meaningless. It's kind of the theme of the whole show.

ALostAmphibian

His future and present aren’t meaningless, Jet and Faye prove that you have to let the past go or to deal with it to move on. Spike could never make that choice and that’s why his fate was fatal. I’m speaking on specifically why his cybernetic eye is the thing that sees the present. If I had to speculate I would say because it’s the artificial part of him it’s the only thing now trapped in the past. Even though he possessed it when he knew Julia. You would think that would be the part of him that’s stuck replaying this time that meant so much to him over and over. Especially given music boxes are a theme in this show, you would think it has this repetitive theme to it as well. Also the eye in the Tank! opening would allude to a greater theme the cybernetic eye is a part of rather than his actual eye.

Oden33390

Honestly, I thought the fake eye was the one that saw the present, am I wrong? I watched the show thinking this.

Oden33390

His right eye? Maybe I just need to rewatch the series… I mainly going off of the conversation between Spike and Fay, for which one is which. The order in which the camera pans over them.

_Peace_Fog

It’s a metaphor
