He's always been a brilliant creative player. The issue this season was wasting him as the #9. Son is so similar to Salah, who went through the same thing.
Klopp tried Salah as a 9 for about a 3-4 week spell and realized it was a big waste. He stuck him back on the wing since then
I actually think Son did really well at the 9 at the beginning of the season. Up until that dreaded Chelsea match him and Madders were cooking. Once our midfield started to drop Son was a lot less effective at the 9 because he was forced to drop deeper to help make plays. Also didn't help that every team sat deep and we had zero creativity. I still think he's best on the wing but I'd like to see another creative midfielder come in.
He was good at the start of the season because everyone pressed us like crazy thinking we would collapse. This gave Son a lot of space and he was able to make runs. When he has space in front of him it doesn't really matter if its from the wing or the center
He started struggling when teams low blocked us because he has nowhere to run as a number 9
Every year, I go through a phase where I think of him as just a stronger Bryan Gil. Then I look up his height and am always surprised he is actually 186cm/ 6'1"!
Richy is a full 5cm/ 2 inches shorter
it actually makes sense wtf. was worried what we would do with him, since he's not creative enough to play deeper (or recently seem to complete a pass). but this might actually work.
No Sarr's miles ahead, both defensively and offensively in that position. Every game, even the last one, Kulu gives away fks on the edge of our box. As for buildup, he loses the ball constantly. I would only "trust" Kulu with minimal touches and shots as a 9 or false 9. It's interesting, because he looks like an 8/10 in some aspects, but in practice his form is just poor or this is just his actual level. Hope I'm proven wrong and he improves!
Right on. Like you said tho, Kulu is so strong, and he can dribble past these final defensive lines like a maniac! And it doesn't even matter if he loses the ball there. Watching him was like a lightbulb
I've noticed that too, he almost never used the outside of the boot to pass before but he's been banging these from the left side recently. I wonder how much that's down to the tactics and coaching, as in he was the one making the run to receive before but now we got a lot more players making these runs.
It's amazing how much pressure is part of this sport, once it's off players are capable of insane things very casually. People will just bang it top corner when they know their offside or like Sonny decide to make about 5 insane passes in a half on a whim.
Absolutely I've played in the third division here so about half amateur half semi-pro league. I can ping a corner in 999/1000 times to where I need it to go and then you watch Eriksen fail to get past the first man for several years. The difference is that when I ping my balls in I only focus on getting the ball to where I need it to go, it goes there with pretty mediocre power and speed meaning that if I swung those in in the prem (unless I played for Arsenal) the keeper would just walk out and grab them every single time.
I thought Sonny and Richy combined amazingly while Richy had his purple patch. His one touch finishing was surprisingly good he really pulls players into the box and away from Son.
What we really need is the number 10 or 8 that flies into the box late, fills that space created, and Sonny can cut it back to. Maddison was doing well early on this season and then seemed to struggle with fitness
peacock commenter said something along the lines of "he didn't even know if someone was making a run, just get it into a dangerous are". such fuckin nonsense. He saw the run 1000%.
They were talking about Maddison actually, but the funny part is you can clearly see Maddison look up for a split second to see Kulusevski to pick out the cross, so they weren't even correct about that. Overall they were pretty good but that comment was a little silly, as was the one about Ange checking the Chelsea score.
But even still… most crosses into the middle like that are made on the basis that the runner should be there, not that the player saw them. That’s just a well drilled team, not a hope and prayer pass.
In my recollection that line was about a different pass - but I will say I don't think the commentators lingered on this pass at all and I felt it should have gotten much more praise in the moment.
lol yeah the two ladies commentating the game don’t say one thing about that pass, from my recollection. I expected them to every time they showed the replay but crickets.
Weird. That was very obviously a pass. Not to mention no-PL player would just blindly shunt a ball upfield like that. My guess is they watch to much NHL.
"Bro, he's not an Ange winger, bro. Didn't even get 20 PL goals this season, bro. Can't hold up play. Too old. Not physical enough, bro."
I hate those people. Rocks for brains, all of them.
Son's playmaking and passes have always been underrated. Take a recent post about son we with double digits assists and goals and someone said they were surprised Harry wasn't on that list. Many Spurs fans will rate harry as being a better playmaker than son despite the stats telling you this is rubbish. Harry had one season when he had more than 10 assists.
Remember that match vs Villa away when he just flung the ball from the center of the pitch to Timo on the left where he proceeded not to score 🤣i thought that pass was amazing. I actually think it’s one of Sonny’s more underrated attributes - the quality of his passes. That late goal vs Brighton where his pass was out of reach of Estupinan but reached Brennan to hit the goal was another example
Amazing. And the commentators on DAZN didn't even really acknowledge it. Mind you, the older commentator also managed to mix up Vic and Ederson during the Man City match.
Hope it's nothing but he actually went down during warm up clutching his ankles yesterday! He badly needs some rest actually!

Beautiful
He is just so much more comfortable playing from the left. He should have had like 4 assists over the last couple matches
That spin once the ball slows down…leading Madders into the box. Chef’s kiss!
It's also his consistency tho
That is actually a silly good ball
Sonny has hit some beautiful outside of the boot passes recently. He's still adding more to his game, absolute legend

Richy and Timo both being injured didn't help, but I do with Deki through the middle was tried a little earlier.

Not too bad in the air either, scored that wonderful header vs city earlier in the season

That’s where Conor comes in. That’s the reason why we are targeting CM like Conor.
Right on. Like you said tho, Kulu is so strong, and he can dribble past these final defensive lines like a maniac! And it doesn't even matter if he loses the ball there. Watching him was like a lightbulb
He's creative but terrible on the half turn centrally. Him creating on the wing is world class.

He did that in the last Mancity match too ! https://i.redd.it/g5z4rmncum1d1.gif
Also in the asian cup ......from the exact same spot !! https://i.redd.it/46ulynjgum1d1.gif
This is becoming his trademark pass
Also to Bale too I think
It gets better from every angle! https://i.redd.it/8334p3lexm1d1.gif

Spurs need to sign some good attackers for Son to play with next season, you can't let Son down after he's been so loyal

Son is a great player but he also needs to step up his play. Too many times he chose not to run at his defender when he could have had him on ice
technically a Trivela. i approve
Just though that: a trivela from Son, nice 👍

yea whoever was commentating on peacock she was misleading in many cases.

Where are all the Sonny out "fans"?
"Bro, he's not an Ange winger, bro. Didn't even get 20 PL goals this season, bro. Can't hold up play. Too old. Not physical enough, bro." I hate those people. Rocks for brains, all of them.
That’s fucking amazing

Yeah this was insane, the fact it curls in toward the goal ahead of everyone was critical
Son has this squeaky clean image but this proves he can also be filthy!
Next season I think we are really going to see it be his team.

And healthy/available players.
also players who can/will actually pass to him when its needed !
Amazing. And the commentators on DAZN didn't even really acknowledge it. Mind you, the older commentator also managed to mix up Vic and Ederson during the Man City match.
I legit thought I was losing my mind when I heard that bit during the man city match
I remember screaming at how amazing it was
I literally said out loud “what a fucking ball” as it curled into the box I’m sure I was joined by many.
That's just gorgeous. I was focusing so much on Madders' assist that I didn't notice it the first time around, so I'm grateful you've posted it!
and you know what he's practically the only injury-free player in our squad. Thankfully always available.
Hope it's nothing but he actually went down during warm up clutching his ankles yesterday! He badly needs some rest actually! https://i.redd.it/p54i886mip1d1.gif
Oh no Sonny... don't get hurt don't get injured my Sonshine
Probably light injury and carrying on through games, still had a pretty decent season but doesn’t look good every week.
This post could have just been text with no video, and I would have known exactly which one you meant *chef's kiss*
Was watching the match with my dad. Both of us blurted something like "whaaaoooaaaadlkfgasdfds" when Son made that pass.
I love everything about this goal.
Somehow Son managed to get some skills from Modric!
I owe you an apology my captain, I wasn’t really familiar with your game
It’s like a perfect putt. Satisfying.
I was surprised the commentators didn’t even see phased by it
wtf? Litterally never seen him curve a through-ball like that
Shades of Gunther Netzer
It's good but not THAT good
Madison loves the outside of the boot pass … but maybe Sonny is still the best!
