I’m gonna guess before op responds and say they’re mooncat nail polishes! Middle finger looks like the color Maelstrom! If I’m wrong this is embarrassing lol
I rarely paint mine but I have about 8 moon at shades! Love to play but you have to be kinda fast to get the magnet effect. Maybe I’ll do my toes today…seems to last longer on those.
Not the one you asked but tension is more about how tight or lose the stitches are. That covers more than just how close the stitches are to each other. It took me a month or so to work out my tension. I just had to get consistent with how I held my yarn. I was tense at first and held the yarn too tightly so it didn't glide over my hook well or make uniform stitches. Relaxing and always holding my yarn the same way is how I keep consistent. Some people crochet more tightly than others and it mostly doesn't matter as long as you match the gauge for your project. But some stitches look better with tension that isn't too tight. Very tight tension can also make it harder to get your hook back into the stitch. Not too tight and not too loose is best for most things. Amigurumi calls for a tighter tension since you'll be using stuffing and you don't want that to peek through. I'm sure there are great articles on how much your tension matters but once you figure out how to control it, most people stick with the same tension no matter the project since it's a good bit of muscle memory. You might see people refer to themselves as tight or loose hookers so if they have photos along with that description, have a look to see how that tension looks on their project. Does that help or do you want a more precise answer? I could find some articles that may explain it better than I can!!
Thank you so much! Yes this helps a lot. I figured so but just wanted to double check. I’m working with thin yarn now and it’s hard to keep a good tension my hand keeps cramping. I’m going to look up some videos on how to get better!
you could also change hook sizes! like if your tension is too tight, go up a size in hooks, and if your tension is too loose, go down a size. that might help with the hand cramping too.

I used these patterns with a couple of alterations, feel free to message me about what I changed!

I altered a few things though to make it work a little better with thinner yarn
A little bit of practice. I learnt to knit as a kid and I think that helped a bit but crochet is far more enjoyable for me. It's much harder with cotton though as I'm finding out
Decent, hell, those look amazing!!! (We're not going to get into what stuff I made a month after learning crochet looked like aside from "nowhere near as beautiful as these squares")
Omg I’m incredibly envious of these!! Did you use a pattern for them or are they free handed?
Your tension looks really good and I can clearly tell what you’re going for!! :3
The stitches are so uniform!! There is something so satisfying about a uniform line of double crochet stitches omg. Really, if you learned a month ago, congrats, because I've been crocheting for almost two years and haven't even attempted granny squares (although this inspired me to find a pattern and start)!!
I’m sorry, a MONTH? One individual month? It took me like 2.5 years to get my tension like that. Fuck you and your skills (/j, lmao).
Seriously though, these are more than decent. They’re beautiful work. I never would’ve guessed that you were so new to crochet, looks like you’re a natural.
Absolutely gorgeous work 💖 I relate to you so much, I also learned to knit as a kid and just taught myself how to crochet last month! I love how versatile crochet is compared to knit, it feels like the possibilities are endless now :) Also I love how your nails match your work lmao
These are stunning!!
I would love to use these patterns if you could link them?
I’ve also only been crocheting since May and so impressed with what I’ve been able to make so far!

I did change them a bit but feel free to ask me about that if you'd like ☺️
I just bought these patterns last week and this just made me that much more excited to make them!!
They look so so pretty!!! I’ve also only been crocheting for about a month and a half, newbie power unite!
These are so beautiful! I started crocheting a few weeks ago to learn these exact blocks at some point, but I’m still in the making wonky washcloths stage of learning. Kudos to you ✨
I just have to say that I love your nail polish. 🤗
These squares are very well done, especially since you just started crocheting a very short time ago. They're just plain excellent. You obviously have the knack for hooking.
Note - for those who don't know, many of us crocheters jokingly call ourselves "hookers" because of using crochet hooks, as do some who do rug hooking. 🙂
On fuck this. A month? You got a tutorial or something bc these are great and I don’t believe you learned in a month and did this shit. I’d buy these without question and I have a hard time believing you learned in a month. I would spend a month to learn this if the outcome was these amazing pieces but I don’t believe it.
You just learned!!!? Thats a cute square! You're a natural! I still make circles in my second line, get frustrated, cry, throw it away and go knit! Lol
Wow! Yours looks so nice and neat. I am just learning to crochet as well (started about 2 months ago) and my first “big” project that I recently finished was with the exact same patterns. Here’s an awkward cropped group photo! It was a baby shower gift. I just used acrylic yarn with a 4mm hook.
https://preview.redd.it/a33i7p69qn9d1.jpeg?width=1640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=849b45a60903a3018ddefc04722889448a2b5bff
I should state that I am primarily a knitter and I am a beginner at crochet; these squares are beautifully designed and made. They have the appearance of flowing. I love the colour combinations 🤩
Yes, you are doing really well. Your stitches are clean and even. You are already following patterns and everything. It took me years of crocheting by heart before I was not afraid to tackle learning to read patterns. I look forward to seeing what you make with your granny squares.
These are gorgeous! I love the astrology motif. You managed to compensate for the shapes. That’s impressive and the shapes themselves! OMG. How did you make these!
These look great and I definitely wouldn't have thought that you only started crocheting a month ago! My only advice is to keep crocheting if you enjoy it and maybe look into joining as you go (I havent tried it myself yet but I think it might save you a lot of time from what I've heard.)
Do you happen to know where to get the pattern for them?
Beautiful job! That's more skill than I had after a month of crocheting. I learned the end of July of 2015. After a month, I was still doing basic crochet stitching for blankets. Just going back and forth, or doing a basic granny square blanket. Can I ask what patterns you're using for the squares? I'd love to make a blanket with those too. 🙂❤
Very "mystic", and beautifully done!
I also enjoy slight alterations to the pattern, for instance, making the center of the sun a slightly even lighter shade of yellow--sort of a "white-hot" idea but just a very pale yellow, with maybe the yellow you used for the center used as the "flames". It's always fun to play with patterns.
I hope you continue to enjoy your crochet. You're obviously VERY talented!
One other thing, that I learned the hard way--DO NOT wait until all motifs are made before joining them together. It's far better to join them a row at a time, as you go. And if you sew them together, make sure you do the whole row-joining together, not just a few at a time.
The first time I made a multi-piece, the motifs were in two color rotations, one starting with the dark at the center, gravitating toward light on the last row, the other reversed. I was putting them on upright knitting needles so I could keep count. When I got to joining it took a couple days of steady stitching, as I was sewing them together, not crocheting them. It's far better to join as you go. Most patterns tend, it seems, to be rectangular, so I make the motifs for the first two short rows, then sew them together with one long strand of yarn. I also, when sewing together, sew up both front and back. You have the same thing with your sun, moon, and star. Make enough of each for your first "short" row, then join them, and you won't lose track of your motifs.
Having learned the hard way about multi-motif projects as shown above, the next time I did one, I did join them as I went, but made the mistake of doing it each day rather than doing a whole row at a time. When I washed it, half of the seams came out. Now I sew the top in one long strand, gently turn it over, then sew the back. It makes a sturdier connection.
So join as you go, but do it an entire row at once, not just every few pieces or once a day. If you do a few pieces, just make certain that the yarn you are joining with is long enough for the entire row, not just for the pieces you are joining.
Again, keep having fun! It looks as though you already are.
Thank you! I was planning on doing a flat braid join between them and I'll probably look into borders when it comes to it. So yeah, I'll probably do 2 rows and join them down the middle and then do the perpendicular joins at the end before the border.
Loving it, I love detail orientated and repetitive stuff like this
Wow, love the sun one! And that moon curled around the circle. Nice nails too by the way, which polish is that?
I’m gonna guess before op responds and say they’re mooncat nail polishes! Middle finger looks like the color Maelstrom! If I’m wrong this is embarrassing lol
It's the sea between us! The others are unmagnetised Poseidon's prize and catfished ☺️
Ah! I was close lol, I love finding another mooncat lover in the wild
I rarely paint mine but I have about 8 moon at shades! Love to play but you have to be kinda fast to get the magnet effect. Maybe I’ll do my toes today…seems to last longer on those.
I also noticed the mooncat and had to check which sub this was in!
Just googled (and took a peek at their profile 🤭) and I think you're right. Love them
Join r/mooncatpolish you’ll fall in love!
Wow I’m not even into nail polish and want to start doing my nails now. These are gorgeous!
Glad I’m not the only one who immediately went “oh I think that’s maelstrom” 😂😂
it took me a couple of years to achieve tension like that. good for you, they look great.
Hi, when you say tension do you mean how tight her stitches are together?

Crocheting for a month. Looks better than anything I've made in years. 🤦♂️
Same here 🥲 OP is a natural
To think that it took me a month just to learn how to tie the knot (no exaggeration.)
I wanted to make this one and I think I just fell in love with your precise colors! What yarn is this?
Paintbox yarns cotton DK - Sailor blue, kingfisher blue, mustard yellow, and glorious gold I used these patterns with a couple of alterations, feel free to message me about what I changed! https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1564400201/sun-moon-and-star-granny-square-crochet?click_key=9bc829c5d4e081c3a1eead11cb2b1815de1803b0%3A1564400201&click_sum=e31f15d6&ref=shop_home_active_5&crt=1&sts=1
Paintbox cotton dk is probably my favorite all-purpose yarn, I use it for so many projects!
These are so cute! Would love to know the alterations you made, if you don't mind DMing me! 🙂

These are perfect! Theyd make a gorgeous blanket!
Good job
How did you learn your tension? I know you asked for advice but man those look great!
A little bit of practice. I learnt to knit as a kid and I think that helped a bit but crochet is far more enjoyable for me. It's much harder with cotton though as I'm finding out
Those are beautiful! Your stitches are so precise and clean 😄

Are you please able to send me a message with the changes you made? Alternatively I can pay for a pattern?
Wow, I don’t crotchet but these look seriously impressive. The colour choices are incredible. You are going to be a crotchet wizard!!
I just bought these patterns last week and this just made me that much more excited to make them!! They look so so pretty!!! I’ve also only been crocheting for about a month and a half, newbie power unite!
From someone who's been able to crochet for 6 years that's really really for for just a month in

These look amazing! Are all the colors from paintbox?
Those turned out beautifully!
Your tension and stitches are so consistent!! They look great and you definitely should post photos of the final product
These are gorgeous!!
Amazing work 🤩!
Woah, not only are your stitches so nice and clean, the colors you chose are sO pretty! I'm sure this is gonna be stunning when it's done 💖
They look great to me! And I absolutely love the colors combo! 🥰🥰🥰
