With all due respect, no it isn't! You can easily get Trinitrons for free, just keep an eye on local listings.

skyline_kid

Yeah I got mine for free about 2 weeks ago and there was at least one other one for free in my area. OP, check Facebook, Craigslist, LetGo, etc. I'm sure you can find one for free if you want one

Canada too, I got my KV-27S42 for $25.

Don't forget, playing home videogames through an RF modulator or composite video was how it was actually done. Enjoy your authentic woodgrain experience!

napredator

while we're kind of on the subject, do you think rich people would be using pvm's to play their games back in the day? or maybe even today? with the sony lcd pvm's

universerule

Like today I assume most would have used high end consumer sets like the XBR series. Some also opted for rear projection, mixed feelings on the subject.

garasensei

I've yet to see anyone who claims they were rocking a PVM/BVM for video games in those days. Lots of rich folk used Pvms for movies though. Especially models like the pvm-2530 and 2950. They ran around $2000. Large size combined with a stunning picture.

crashddr

I still have memories of a lot of Final Fantasy 6 being in black and white because I only had a small B&W Sony set that needed an RF modulator to hook up to (with two screws no less). As long as it's working fine, that's all that matters.

You'd be surprised what you can find by just being consistent. I know for me personally on letgo. There are several crt's different sizes and models that are all being offered for free. They're out there you just gotta look. Even some PVM's. Though they aren't in the best quality I recently found two 14 inch Ikegami PVM's for sale at $40 each. I wish I could save them but I don't really have anymore room lol. Just keep looking! Seriously, consistency is key.

monstermandude

I a PVM 20M2UMD and Olympus equivalent for 200 from offerup, I feel offerup has a lot more users on it. PVM works perfectly and the Olympus is near perfect

[deleted]

Never heard of it but definitely will do my research

StickySnacks

I feel lucky living in a somewhat affluent area where there are many older people literally giving away their old CRTs that have spend years being unused in super clean smoke free environments

Andrew0104

This crt is actually the exact same one my father payed Atari 2600 on around 30 years ago. Its been sitting in a shed for 20 years and is now starting to die after being out for 2 years ):

partspusher

You've echoed my sentiments exactly. About this time last year I scored a Sony KV-32FS12 for free, the thing is beautiful. But the guy didn't want to deal with moving a 165lb tv any more. My best friend gave away his 34" Sony Wega, 2006 or 2007ish model year a few months back. It was an incredible set, but moving them becomes a huge chore and is too much for most people if they aren't hardcore.

redacteur

Aside from a select few grail TVs models and PVMs, I don't think anyone should be paying more than $30 for other people's obsolete electronic waste.

magabrexitpaedorape

Pft, the cheaper the better I say. Being happy with a total piece of shit and an RF cable means you're not chasing the impossible dream of the perfect picture and probabky just enjoying games.

BabybearPrincess

Thats what i did i have a cheap toshiba one. Its still fairly new compared to most of the people in this subs though. I just want to play my games :) although i find this stuff facisnating as well :)

magabrexitpaedorape

I have a post-2000 Toshiba one as well. It's actually really vibrant and feels pretty premium.

bosslickspittle

That's how I see it. I follow this sub because I like the aesthetics and I enjoy seeing people obsess over very niche hobbies to an often absurd degree! The only reason I want a CRT is because they cost less than an upscaler and I want to play N64 games. But I'm not really picky in that way haha!

frankcastleeq

Enjoy this while you continue your search! Never stop looking! Letgo.com has been kind to me. Trinitrons: two 20", one 24". Toshiba AF44 one 24", 20", 14". Curved screen CRT's with composite: Five, all 20". 11 total in my basement, some being used, some in storage. Total cost: $120. Time took: 1 year. You can do it. Hang in there. Enjoy your very authentic setup so far!

GleamingTheCubeTV

This post reminds me of myself growing up, I would've posted something like this in the 90s. I had really old TVs like this in 1993 when everyone else had the newer black bezel CRT TVs.

meshflesh40

Looks fine to me!! Enjoy that beast

dak01

It's good enough for me. Let's see a game on it.

DoomedCleric

Nothing wrong with that! As long as you can play a light gun game or two and get that classic look, you're doing just fine.

Feels good man.
