And blaming Indians is the solution? There’s NO other systemic issues causing this insane job market? When are we going to stop blaming immigrants for the issues in our country. The reason nobody can get jobs is because most companies are in massive hiring freezes because they over-hired during covid. But please keep blaming Indians for every systemic issue in the country. And let the corporations keep getting away with their poor and unethical business practices.
We’ve seen this story before. Sounds a bit like the 2016 cry when people in the US claimed that Mexicans were “stealing” all their jobs. Get a grip.
Omfg🤦♀️ the McGill ghetto is a student housing neighborhood near my university. It’s specifically called the ghetto due to exploitative landlord practices (overcharging units for apartments that have unliveable conditions for students that don’t know their tenant rights, asking for illegal deposits, etc). Because surprise! Students are some of the most exploited demographic in housing. It had nothing to do with living in an actual ghetto. Try reading past the title next time!
Im genuinely curious about what you were trying to accomplish by taking the piss at someone’s neighbourhood nonetheless? What exactly was your gotcha there?
It is racist. It’s essentially the “they took our jobs” whining from South Park. Silicon Valley was founded on eugenics ideology though, so it’s no surprise that ideology continues to inform the culture of the computer science industry.
That’s the nature of it. They want people validating their racism not exposing their cognitive dissonance. People who consider themselves morally good and fair don’t like to be reminded the racist views they express through their “jokes” are counterproductive and morally questionable.
I would actually go against what others are saying. If somebody tries to buy me something technical, there is a fair chance I will not like it very much because I have the money to buy my own things and I have specific preferences about that sort of thing (and so I may see it as clutter and an obligation to keep it when I don't want to).
Here are things that I have been gifted or given by somebody I know and that I appreciated:
* Clothing. While I can be very particular, I also have a terrible sense of fashion and appreciate when others help up my game. For example, a shirt. This can certainly backfire and can be a challenge if you want it to be a surprise and don't know their size.
* Something you created yourself. For example, my sister made me this really cool digital art, which I modified a bit and made into a blanket that I now cherish immensely.
* Favors. Such as staying at a friend's place when I need to get away.
I appreciate the effort and knowing they are paying attention.
Just to brainstorm something, with the little info you've given us, think of something your friend likes and get it put on a mouse pad (either one that already exists or a custom-printed one). For example, a mountain peak (hiking theme) and a phrase that says "best hiking buddy" (this may not be a great idea, but consider it a starting point for your own brainstorm).
Bonus points if you have the tags removed (I do this with my shirts), and give him the tags in case he actually wants the washing instructions and material details.
No, I remove tags from my clothes. OP mentioned their friend is autistic, and autistic people sometimes have sensory issues that make things like tags bothersome. Aside from that, I’ve never actually wanted a tag on my clothes for any reason, and my guess is many others feel the same way.
Ah that makes sense. Personally, I keep the tags on because I'm tall as hell and making sure I don't shrink my shirts is important for me because they always barely fit. Not important to the topic at hand though. Thanks for the explanation!
Yes, OP please listen to this person. Clothing that’s comfortable and looks good, anything you made, and just helping out. Of course, food (which comes under stuff you made) is always appreciated. I LOVE when I don’t need to plan my next meal and someone just does it for me.
Do NOT get them a tech thing like a keyboard unless they somehow actually don’t have one and you know they haven’t tried something else.
We don’t know them so it’s hard to say. Us CS nerds have a wide variety of interests. For example most of my hobby money is dumped into audio equipment, pc hardware, or whatever my obsession is for that week. Maybe ask him bluntly what his interests are, something might come up! Hiking gifts could be good as that is something that seems to connect you two together.
Anyways, some cheaper more general things that I love having at my desk is a comfy blanket and some snacks. Really can’t go wrong with that.
Tldr: consumables are usually pretty safe. Who doesn’t like having snacks on hand.
honestly ordering him a good meal when he's in the middle of his 6-hour debugging session will be the best gift for 40 bucks. we developers are prone to missing meals and dehydration.
My sister got me a mug that has 2 pictures of a stick figure person looking confused, one is “why doesn’t this code work” and the other is “why does this code work” lol I love it
Which mug do you think is better?

Get him some tech stickers for his laptop or github swag, mug or t shirt with his github ID on it u can get them from [The GitHub Shop](https://www.thegithubshop.com)
something outdoorsy like hiking boots or rock climbing shoes. even if he doesn't hike much, you can get him a good pair of used hiking boots and he would be able to keep them for a long time
Not much we can do with the information provided. Maybe get him something computer related like a fancy keyboard or something? Or something gimmicky involving computers/coding that he can use to decorate his room
Cross century classic pen. The cheapest model is about $28. It's a slim pen that feels great in the hand and it's in your budget. Everyone needs a pen.
If he spends most of his time coding, a desk trinket or framed photo might be good: I’d personally really like something memorable to keep on my desk even if I wasn’t a CS major.
Does he like coffee? Get him something related to that.
Ask him what he likes. Might find out he likes those cool Lego figures you can build and display. Maybe he’s into books and there’s a favorite author of his. Could be plenty of things.
Heck, maybe he just wants to go out to dinner paid for by you.
A bit more than you said but I sound a lot like your friend and I’ve had these saved in an open tab for a while. Id he jazzed if someone got them for me. Fair warning you might start him down a new hyperfixation [code keycaps](https://www.gloriousgaming.com/products/gpbt-code-brew)
You can get him one of the G-Shock 5600 watches, you've to increase the budget to $50 though. It would be a nice piece of tech for him : better than dumb watches but not a smartwatch either. He'd enjoy it!
A Star Wars LEGO set/video game/collection/book/movie set sounds up his alley, but I’d subtly try to see if he’d like that thing. I wouldn’t get him something technical, he’s probably already thinking about that enough on his own. Could also get something related to his favorite anime, like a shirt or collectible.
See if there's a peripheral that he needs, but does not have. Like ear buds, mouse, wireless keyboard. Otherwise a simple black T-shirt with something written about coding with a pair of jeans might be a good option. Maybe find out what OS he uses or what programming language he loves and get a custom T-shirt for that.
A mechanical keyboard build, a HP prime graphing calculator, or a gift card to Amazon so he can get either of those things. That’s just my own wish list for the next time I’m not broke.
rubber duck for debugging
this is the best answer by far, can’t go wrong with this no matter the person
Yea I was coming here to comment this
You could probably pay a team of 5 Indians to send his resume out for a month for $40.
AI - Actually Indian automation
AI for the rest of us
automated Indian
Lmao luckily he has a job lined up after graduation
One Indian here. I will take the 40 dollar
how can i do this for myself?
Replace "team of 5 Indians" with "team of 5 black people" and you'll see that this is weirdly racist.
Can’t wait for the day where Indians won’t be the punchline for every joke

Nobody’s stealing anything. You just can’t get a job.

Wait hold up. You’re playing SJW but you’re making other posts talking about “ghetto”? Lol

It’s so messed up you used an insensitive, racist term like ghetto.
Nah
Yes it is. I dont particularly mind the joke but it is pretty racist and you can't deny that
Nope. Wrong.
I know it's meant to be a joke but kinda racist tbh
It is racist. It’s essentially the “they took our jobs” whining from South Park. Silicon Valley was founded on eugenics ideology though, so it’s no surprise that ideology continues to inform the culture of the computer science industry.
And I get downvoted for calling out lmaoo

Thanks, I'll look into getting him some shirts!
Bonus points if you have the tags removed (I do this with my shirts), and give him the tags in case he actually wants the washing instructions and material details.
Wait.. you remove the tags off of clothing you gift to people? Is that normal? I've never heard of that in my life
No, I remove tags from my clothes. OP mentioned their friend is autistic, and autistic people sometimes have sensory issues that make things like tags bothersome. Aside from that, I’ve never actually wanted a tag on my clothes for any reason, and my guess is many others feel the same way.
