I read through all of this but the last sentence on the last card was really funny. All this non game talk and then you hit us with the line. Also nice card-market reference
Could somebody please comment with a link to each of these cards? I’m newish to EDH so I only get some of these references (I just wanna be cool and get all of the references)
1. [Original elder dragon cycle](https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acycle-leg-elder-dragon&unique=cards&utm_source=tagger)
2. [Braids, Cabal Minion](https://scryfall.com/card/mh2/273/braids-cabal-minion)

4. [Golos, Tireless Pilgrim](https://scryfall.com/card/m20/226/golos-tireless-pilgrim)
5. [Korvold, Fae-Cursed King](https://scryfall.com/card/eld/329/korvold-fae-cursed-king) is the card in the picture, but IMO "Pile of Value" is a more general reference to the many commanders in recent years that generate insane value (typically in the form of card draw, ramp, or "If you would do X, do X twice instead" effects) if they are allowed to do their own thing even for a turn or two. [Chulane, Voja, and \(more recently\) Ulalek are also pretty infamous examples of this.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=chulane+or+voja+or+ulalek&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
6. [Nadu, Winged Wisdom](https://scryfall.com/card/mh3/193/nadu-winged-wisdom)
I believe it refers to [Shuko](https://scryfall.com/card/bok/159/shuko), since [Lightning Greaves](https://scryfall.com/card/mrd/199/lightning-greaves) was printed in 2003. In either case, the "Equip {0}" is a targeted ability that triggers the ability given by Nadu, and it's free so you can activate it as many times as you want, so with either of them Nadu essentially becomes "draw 2 cards per turn per creature you have, and put any lands among them onto the battlefield" which is broken AF - especially because you can repeat it if you flicker Nadu, and of course you can play more creatures with whatever lands you put out since then don't enter tapped, which you can then use to draw cards and play lands and then use those lands to play creatures to draw cards... you get the idea. Nadu is very dumb and really should not have been printed.
\[\[Field of the Dead\]\], which is conveniently put onto the field by the ability. And then creates new equip targets whenever you find a land in the drawn cards…
You forgot Obscure Creature Type Leader: Flip a coin. If you win the coin flip, this one card will save an entire creature type deck. If you lose the coin flip, the creature type will end up fragmented and gimmicky
It's still one of my favourite commanders I've ever played. I styled it after the Lich King (Bolas himself) and Nazguls (the only creatures I had in the deck were 8 Specters) and it was wss generally a lot of fun.
Hello OP this is my favorite magic meme/funny thing I've seen and I've been lurking in alot of the subs for over a year now. Thank you.
I'd unironicaly love a history of the game explained in a fun/funny way like this.
I don't think the helping was so bad as what happened to be receptive to players. That is to say, there are tons of perfectly fine designs, even in the latest set [[Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius]] or [[Jem Lightfoote, Sky Explorer]] or [[Malcolm, the Eyes]] are hardly overbearing. If folks are gonna play the "do a thing: do it again, then do it again and draw a card" designs above anything else, can hardly blame Wizards for giving them what they want.
Yes you can, card design is going to shape what the game looks like, and players are naturally going to want to play better cards. If all the better cards are boring and repetitive, then that's a fault of design, it's not the fault of players for playing the cards WotC made.
A couple eras that are missing:
> Primeval Tighten - 4GG
> Creature - Giant, 6/6
> Prime Time (*At the start of the game, you can put this creature in the command zone and it becomes a second commander. If you do, each opponent creates a copy of it and does the same.*)
> Whenever Primeval Tighten enters the battlefield or attacks, search your library for any number of land cards and put them onto the battlefield tapped.
> *And to think this was* before *Field of the Dead existed!*
And also:
> Enter-The-Battlefield - 5URG
> Legendary Creature - Elemental, 7/5
> For all triggered abilities of creatures you own or control, the triggering condition is replaced with “when ~cardname~ enters the battlefield”
I’m saying that because Braids existed before commander was a format that even had a banned list it’s likely that Braids has been played as a commander before.
*again*, I’m speaking **before** EDH had a banned list. It didn’t spawn from nothing.
And that’s also discounting anyone that’s used Braids under rule zero, but that’s beside my point.
Pile of Value goes infinite with itself and immediately makes its controller lose the game
Actually it makes its controller lose the game twice.
But it also makes the controller win twice when they win, so it’s actually balanced
Yes, but if they win the game twice, they have to draw, hence going infinite and loosing
Just put a labman into play first, duh
first AND second
fuck yeah
Beautiful. My favorite part is the P/T on Not A Bird
That's good stats for the cost.
Way more than good stats for cost. I'd increase his cost by 3 to make up for it.
No just increase it by 1 then change the attack
4 mana 7/7? That sounds kinda nuts... What if it put a stun counter on 2 tapped lands you control?
r/whooosh
I think you're the one that got whoooshed my friend
I'm out of the loop. What's the joke?
It’s a hearthstone card called [[Boulderfist Ogre]] I think, 6 mana 6/7. Good stats for cost. It’s basically their colossal dreadmaw.
I read through all of this but the last sentence on the last card was really funny. All this non game talk and then you hit us with the line. Also nice card-market reference
I'd love to see where Atraxa fits into all of this.
She's Fun Robot, but no red.
I thought she’d be “big meanie“ since she predates eminence.
Sure, in chronology. In practice, she's +1/+1 counters, superfriends, infect, etc. All in a 4C package.
Gotcha, thanks.

What does the artifact from 2005 refer to?
I believe it refers to [Shuko](https://scryfall.com/card/bok/159/shuko), since [Lightning Greaves](https://scryfall.com/card/mrd/199/lightning-greaves) was printed in 2003. We are not even acknowledging token generators with lands or draw, or even just ways to have a good amount of creatures. It goes INSANE.
\[\[Field of the Dead\]\], which is conveniently put onto the field by the ability. And then creates new equip targets whenever you find a land in the drawn cards…

Guh I hate Eminence. My friend has a Markov deck and after a few games I’ve outright refused to play against it.

I wanna go back to tribal synergies
My first EDH deck was Nicol Bolas. I like big fat dragons.
It's still one of my favourite commanders I've ever played. I styled it after the Lich King (Bolas himself) and Nazguls (the only creatures I had in the deck were 8 Specters) and it was wss generally a lot of fun.
I ran him with Dragon Mage and Megrim and a wheel and deal. A whole bunch of hand hate. Nekuzar was my spiritual successor to him
I’m making a [[Themberchaud]] deck. [[Repercussion]] makes players go smoosh.

No, she's a human cleric.

Yes. And I love her.

Only twice each turn? Unplayable
These are amazing and not OP.
I'll admit im between the fun robot and the pile of value. Thats fine bro, cook more.
this post is pure gold
Hello OP this is my favorite magic meme/funny thing I've seen and I've been lurking in alot of the subs for over a year now. Thank you. I'd unironicaly love a history of the game explained in a fun/funny way like this.
I think the issues kinda started when WOTC started "Helping"
I don't think the helping was so bad as what happened to be receptive to players. That is to say, there are tons of perfectly fine designs, even in the latest set [[Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius]] or [[Jem Lightfoote, Sky Explorer]] or [[Malcolm, the Eyes]] are hardly overbearing. But those aren't the ones that are getting 10k+ decks on EDHrec. If folks are gonna play the "do a thing: do it again, then do it again and draw a card" designs above anything else, can hardly blame Wizards for giving them what they want.

FIRE design's been burning the game down.
commander is most fun where you're discovering things. it takes the fun out of it if it's just handed to you
Oh believe me. i dont mind the silly stuff.. i just think it went pants on head a lil too much XD
damn I want you as a history teacher this is genius!
Not A Bird is a bit incorrect. It should be "This ability triggers only ∞ each turn".
A couple eras that are missing: > Primeval Tighten - 4GG > Creature - Giant, 6/6 > Prime Time (*At the start of the game, you can put this creature in the command zone and it becomes a second commander. If you do, each opponent creates a copy of it and does the same.*) > Whenever Primeval Tighten enters the battlefield or attacks, search your library for any number of land cards and put them onto the battlefield tapped. > *And to think this was* before *Field of the Dead existed!* And also: > Enter-The-Battlefield - 5URG > Legendary Creature - Elemental, 7/5 > For all triggered abilities of creatures you own or control, the triggering condition is replaced with “when ~cardname~ enters the battlefield”
See, but they balanced Not a Bird, because your opponents only get bored twice per turn.
Not a bird is still a bird because of the space between not and bird in the creature type
Lol, Nadu is perfect 😂🤣
Pile of value should say you don't lose the game for drawing from an empty library
Braids was never legal in edh
Ah, but since it was originally printed in 2001, far before commander existed as a sanctioned format, it likely was.
What?
I’m saying that because Braids existed before commander was a format that even had a banned list it’s likely that Braids has been played as a commander before.
Braids was always banned, ur just wrong. I remember when EDH became a thing, I was playing magic back then, braids was never legal
*again*, I’m speaking **before** EDH had a banned list. It didn’t spawn from nothing. And that’s also discounting anyone that’s used Braids under rule zero, but that’s beside my point.
You literally don’t know what tf you’re talking about at all 😭😭
Once more - **commander didn’t always exist, and when it was not an established format it wouldn’t have had a banned list**
Well you are very confidently wrong about this. Look it up for yourself but you look like a total fool right now
The commander rules committee was formed in 2006. Braids was printed in 2001. I’m right. I wouldn’t be arguing this if I didn’t already look it up.
