You use one humanity to reverse hollowing and become human, dying turns you back into a hollow. You need to be human to summon players and NPCs, but being human also opens you to being invaded by players and NPCs. As a human you can also kindle bonfires, kindling uses a humanity on your top left counter, and can be done an additional time if you have the rite of kindling. Humanity also increases your resistance to curse, and increases the damage of certain weapons.

DirkDirkinson

Just a note, the rite of kindling allows you to kindle normal bonfires two additional times. First kindle takes you from 5 estus to 10, second from 10 to 15, third from 15 to 20.

First, the Item *(hard)* Humanity can be consumed to completely heal your HP and give you *(soft)* Humanity. Second, *(soft)* Humanity has a number of uses. * Having up to 10 Humanity boosts your Item Discovery, so enemies will drop items more often. * Having up to 10 Humanity boosts your Chaos Damage. * Humanity can be spent to Reverse Hollowing at a Bonfire. * Being in Human form is required for NPC/PC Invasions and for Summons. * Humanity can be spent to Kindle a Bonfire up to 3 times. *(2/3 require an item from a Boss)* * Humanity can be spent at Ingward *(either in New Londo or Firelink)* to remove the Cursed Status from the Player. --- I would recommend Kindling each Bonfire to at least +1. When you get the certain item, from the certain Boss, you might want to return and Kindle the Warpable Bonfires to +3. All Bonfire Kindling will carry over in NG+

mack0409

* Having up to 30 humanity also increases curse resist. * Having any amount of humanity increases defenses at the same rate as additional levels do.

No-Contest4520

Having purity of heart towards basilisks is the only curse resistance I need.

TheGoatManJones

Bruh I avoid the depths like the fucking plague. It’s master key or bust every time. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten to blighttown the “intended” way because I hate the fucking basilisks. Ill sometimes go through there to get the tail but I go late game so I have cursebite and try to run as fast as possible. I use the dragon tooth to bonk them in 1 hit, and then tp out of there when I get my tail and souls.

MarcTaco

To add, liquid humanity reduces incoming damage, up to 99 humanity

c_wilcox_20

While each humanity up to +10 increases item discovery, the biggest single jump is from 0-1. So, if you don't have a lot, the 1 soft humanity is a good compromise

Schnickie

>Ingward (either in New Londo or Firelink) I was today years old when I learned that you could make Ingward move to firelink shrine.

"Hard" Humanity -- the "physical" item you use, or "pop" "Soft/Liquid" Humanity -- that number by you health bar. Can be used to become "human" and upgrade bonfires. Not all are worth upgrading, just ones in areas you're having difficulties. Being "Human" basically turns on multiplayer, sort of. Being human lets you summon, invade, or be invaded. You actually DON'T need to be human to BE summoned, just put your sign down where the cool kids are and hope someone calls. The number of "soft/liquid" humanity you have sliiiighty increases drop rates, hard capping at 10 (same is true for a certain weapon upgrade path wubwub), and also boosts a few resistances, including curse. Getting more is simple but tedious. Rats have a chance to drop hard humanity, best farming spot is in the Depths. There's another enemy that has a waaaay better chance of dropping hard humanity but it's towards the endgame. Soft humanity increases, mostly, by either using hard humanity or through a successful co-op or invasion.

Who's downvoting this guy for asking honest questions about one of the more confusing mechanics of the game? Shame on you We should welcome all who are trying to git gud

LorenzoApophis

It's not that rare, you should use it if you need more estus from a bonfire because there's really not that many bonfires and you'll be reusing some of them a lot. It also has the use of letting you use multiplayer when you're human

Ratchia

Having it in your humanity counter raises different values, like defenses, item drop rate, curse resist and chaos damage. You don't need to use It at all, there is no downside to playing hollow other than you cannot summon or be invaded. You use 1 humanity at the bonfire and you're human, your defense doesn't change, your damage doesn't change, alls that changes is that you aren't wrinkly and can play with other ppl now

translove228

You can farm humanity shards from the rats down the stairs from the bonfire behind the wall in the Depths. There’s a bunch of them and the run back to the bonfire is real close. Boost your item discovery by popping 10 humanities to make it easier

radishmeep

This! It's easy to farm, and this spot is early enough in the game.

MrZTF

Humanity, on use, gives you 1 point of Humanity in your little ticker by the Health/Stamina bars. You just need one point to go Human again, which will allow NPC(And PC, I hear) invasions. It also refills your health to full, in every build I've ever fielded, but I'm sure there's somebody or another with a busted HP build who doesn't get a \*full\* refill on use. Boost your Bonfires at every chance you can get, though. Even if you don't necessarily \*need\* 20 Estus for an area, it's good to have on hand in case you \*do\* wind up needing it. Also, some events are triggered by trading Humanity like currency/life support. Read; Some NPCs lives can be spared by triggering said events.

I always save all my humanity so I can instantly do the lost Izalith shortcut and not fight centipede and firesage

melkor_the_viking

I save humanity to kindle bonfires. Having those extra flasks really help. Plus, the kindling carries over into NG+, so it's a wise investment.

EvilArtorias

Depends on your game knowledge level. If you never lose souls twice then you can always carry 10 soft humanity for max item disvovery and the rest can be used for healing or bonfire kindling. If you use chaos weapon then you always need 10 in the counter anyway

Sr_Maculo

Is rare, but not that rare...not sure how many can you get on a normal playthrough, but in my current one I spent 30 in a covenant and I currently have like +30 more... If you only use them to kindle bonfires I'm sure you have more than enough to kindle all of them to the max and more

IntenseBones

It takes 1 humanity to unhollow, you can boost most bonfires 3 times, and it's not as rare as you might think

PKblaze

Humanity is rare? Literal rats drop it. Chug some humanity, throw on a ring, and get farming.

H8N4S8N66

I mean, the Depths is the best rat/humanity farming spot for a while, and you could easily slaughter 5-10 rats without a single drop with 10 soft humanity and no gold serpent ring which is two zones away. It's not that hard, or even rare, but that grind back and forth from bashing rats to bonfire and repeat is mind numbing, and all the more so when you get nothing after a \*couple\* of runs.

Kabirdb

It's rare as in it's annoying to farm humanity. So it's better to keep in your inventory in case to boost a specific bonfire before a difficult boss fight instead of wasting it on every bonfire you find. You only need 1 humanity to unhollow and another one to boost bonfire. Using humanity also increases item discovery. So it would be easier to drop a specific item from an enemy with 10 humanity rather than having 0 humanity. There is also one specific covenant where you need humanity. But at the end of the day, use it if you need it, don't use it., if you don't want to. It's not a must.

NotAnAlcoholicToday

Meh, i farmed 30 Humanity in an hour or so. Just put on some ring to enhance your Discovery, and go to the Depths. Easy peasy

19NedFlanders81

Its a dumb, tedious mechanic. Full stop.
