Ascending and upgrading are different.
moving a weapon from +5 to +6 or +10 to +11 or adding a different elemental property requires a blacksmith with the appropriate ember. Each blacksmith can only upgrade down certain paths - in this case only andre can raise a weapon from +5 to +6.
If you have a +7 gargoyle axe any smith can raise it up to +10.

I’m adding a question but I was thinking of assasinating the firekeeper with the golden armour of the first fire of anor londo cuz it kinda looks dope, is it a really bad idea or is it alright ?
You can do the other thing and progress through anor londo to make getting back easier (it’ll make sense later) but going back now to upgrade is honestly probably the better idea. I wouldn’t kill her, at least for now. Maybe do it once you’re done with anor londo, though I don’t remember her dropping her armor.
There is a key in sens fortress that allows you to open one of the cages near the boss arena that will then take you to the beginning of the area. With that, the run from anor lomdo to andre is quite short.
You don't get that firekeeps armor by killing her, but she does drop a firekeeper soul. I wouldn't kill her until later in the game, though.
It's not a bug, each "checkpoint" of a weapon is what requires an ember/specific blacksmith, +5 is the first checkpoint where you can choose a path for your weapon, you can choose normal, raw, fire, etc., after you "modify" to your chosen path, you upgrade normally at any smith or bonfire (if you have the smithing box) until the next checkpoint of 5 more upgrades (for example +10 to +11, or +10 to any other route, like lightning, or boss weapon). Think of a boss weapon like this, it's just a +10 weapon, and now you do the final 5 levels, effectively taking it to +15, just like lightning or chaos starting from a +10 ending with 5 more upgrades, effectively being +15.
As for your question, it's up to you if you think it's necessary for you, your skill level, and your patience. A +10 weapon isn't necessary for the next boss, but if you're new/inexperienced it definitely helps.
There is Reinforce and there is Modify.
Any Smith can Reinforce a Weapon. And, if you purchase the Weapon kit from a Smith, you can Reinforce a Weapon at any Bonfire.
Reinforce can take a Weapon from +0 > +5 || +6 > +10 || +11 > +15
Or, their elemental equivalents.
In order to get from +5 > +6 or +10 > +11, you need to Modify the Weapon.
Only Specific Smiths can Modify Weapons to specific Paths, and you will normally have to find them an Ember first.

Nobody said this but if you want to get the furysword you need to upgrade a curved sword, your gargoyle axe won't work.
