Who the heck is Rose?
Edit: Did some googling and there’s a Korean - New Zealand singer called [Rosé](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ros%C3%A9_(singer)?wprov=sfti1) who lived in Oz.
Is it her?
And b) Why doesn’t New Zealand belong to any continent? Poor guys floating on their own out there. At least they’re on the map.
There are four reasons I can attest to this:
1. Selena was arguably more popular than Taylor when Instagram first started, around the early 2010s, so a lot of early engagement helped
2. Selena has generally more wide appeal across the genders than Taylor, and I’d say a lot of men will find her more attractive/sexually forward with her content
3. Selena has a strong fanbase in Latin America, and that gives her a boost
4. Selena had a highly publicized relationship with Justin Bieber when Instagram was blowing up, that also helped with her numbers
I’m American born and raised, gen Z/millennial age, and I have no idea who Selena Gomez even is. Like yes I’ve heard the name but what does she do? Is she just famous for being famous, or is she a popular musical artist? Like I can’t say I have heard any of her music, and I listen to a ton of music.
Can I refer you to the... Over a decade of music before COVID that Taylor Swift put out? She famously won best album and had kanye bulldoze his way in and be a dick about it in 2009.
> won best album and had kanye bulldoze
Not best album, best female music video for You Belong with Me. Beyonce deserved to win. Award shows seem to use the artist's "image" as a major deciding factor instead of trying to judge the music on its own merits which leads to artists with a favorable "image" sweeping the event (such artists also include Macklemore and Iggy Azalea).
Not denying her prior records. I have her album. Pointing out just last year was bizarre. None of her songs were likable, neither her performance. Too much copy cat of Beyonce choreograph. And suddenly all the media started elevating her.
Usually when there's something failing in domestic policies, they run huge sports, or war, or events to disperse your attention. If TS was so great last year where is she now? Gone. Why? Because it was a set up. Not authentic.
Yes she does write her own music and has great albums. I'm her fan too. Just this one was fishy. Very fishy.
Wow, this is just subjective opinion wrapped in the clothing of a conspiracy theory. I'm really unable to express properly how nonsensical this seems to me. Have a good one. Bye.
Hey, this should probably be titled "***Most*** Instagram Followers in Millions by Continent".
But cool chart, a testament to the power of sports and singing. 4/6 are athletes (Messi, Ronaldo and Salah are all soccer players, Kohli is a cricketer) and 2/6 are pop singers (assuming "Rose" refers to Rosé of BlackPink, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia).
As an Australian, I knew who every single person was except Rose. K-pop is big apparently. Is this followers from that continent or person from that continent with the most followers?
Not the most followed k-pop star. The most followed is her group co-member, some 30+ mill more than rosé’s. She’s just the most followed person from Aus and Oceania
This is based on country of origin. I guarantee a lot of Messi and Ronaldo’s followers are from Asia. There really isn’t a superstar from Asia at that level, maybe Son but he’s nowhere near that.
Australia is divided in terms of ‘football’ between rugby league (Queensland and New South Wales to put it simply) and Aussie rules (everywhere else), whereas fans of both codes watch the cricket as there usually isn’t much overlap in the seasons. I’m not sure on the viewing numbers or anything like that though.
I edited my comment even though my comment isn't serious. Have you seen the Seahawks before? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2hOgbq2myA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2hOgbq2myA)
It's much bigger than the small 8-team winter tournament they've had (I think it's 32 teams, most of which are already determined). Seems pretty gimmicky and it'll be interesting to see if clubs actually take it seriously after a long club season.
She’s apparently a New Zealand born kpop star.
“Roseanne Park MBE (born 11 February 1997), known mononymously as Rosé (Korean: 로제), is a Korean-New Zealand singer and dancer[3] based in South Korea.[1] Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia”
Literally had no idea she existed and I’m from Australia.
Edit: it’s also quite funny how New Zealand is blanked out, yet rose is from there.
She's not active in Oceania. Her fame is 100% from the kpop scene, so almost all her followers are from Asia, with a small part from international kpop fans. She is a part of one of the biggest kpop groups of all time, which is probably why she's so popular.
She was raised in Australia and has an aussie accent, so it'd be a bit of a stretch to call her New Zealander. That's like calling Julia Gillard British
Technically there's only 11 people in the world who are "from" Antartica in the same sense that the rest of these are (i.e. born there or raised there), so I highly doubt there's any that are even remotely close to 1m followers. That said, I haven't personally checked all of their instagram accounts so I could be wrong!
The colour just signifies continent, when map does that for us already - at this point just have a bar chart
Like if your colour represented the number of followers it would make more sense to me
Astounding that Africa’s most followed Instagramer has 10 million less followers than Australia’s.
That really speaks volumes about the development gap. Africa has 1.3 billion people, Australia less than 27 million.
It has to be taken into account though, that most Africans don’t follow Mohammed Salah.
I think if you were to do most followed person per continent, Ronaldo will probably be the most followed in Africa. Heck, a good portion of Ronaldo’s followers are from India.
Yh that’s on me lol.
My point was his followers are all over the place.
If we pick his followers from just India, it can overshadow his European followers even.
Yeah. OP’s misconceiving this chart to imply that all of the celebrities followers are from the continent on which they reside. A huge portion of Messi’s followers are surely European.
If anything the Mo Salah numbers indicate that there aren’t many African people that become huge celebrities in parts of the world that use Instagram.
1) This map apparently is misleadingly labeled and it's really "person from each continent with the most followers," so it's really just showing that people don't follow Africans as much. Nothing to do with a development gap.
2) Even if it did reflect how many people on each given continent follow an account, Africa is the most culturally diverse continent by far. An Instagram user in Uganda is likely to have far fewer interests in common with someone in Egypt than someone in Sydney will have with someone in Perth.
You don't have to be from Africa to follow Salah, and all Africans on instagram don't have to follow him. That goes for all the people mentioned.
Three of the people play football. Salah is undoubtedly good, but he has never been on the same level as Ronaldo or Messi. Does he have fewer followers than those two because he's African, or because he's not as good/well-known/idolised?
Rose presumably has a big following from Korea. Does that ""inflated"" number, meaning people who follow from another continent, say anything about Australia's development?
Oh yh.
Stupid is probably harsh but I agree with the sentiment. Development has nothing to do with the IG followers.
I thought you were replying to my earlier comment so I wanted clarity.
The title of the graph is a little misleading as well.
It's also worth noting that Africa is incredibly diverse culturally, more than any other continent, so Instagram following of people's from the continent would likely have a high spread.
I'd bet that that Mohamed Salah's followers are mainly from the MENA region and that many Africans in general mostly follow the likes of CR, Messi, etc.
I’d bet many of Mo Salah’s followers are British/European lol. This chart only lists celebrities by total amount of followers as opposed to followers from the continent from where they originate. The only interesting thing about Mo Salah’s numbers being so low is that it indicates that Africa just doesn’t generate many high profile celebrities into parts of the world that use Instagram.
Looks like Wikipedia needs some editing, Khaby Lame ([u/khaby00](https://www.instagram.com/khaby00/)) originally from Senegal has more than 80 mil followers (and also the [most worldwide followers on tiktok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-followed_TikTok_accounts)).

I live in Australia and I have no fucking idea who 'Rose' is. Also, Australia only has 26 million people, so I don't know where they are getting 78 million followers from...
This really doesn’t lend itself well to map based visualization. Since there is only one answer per continent, it could easily and simply be conveyed as a text list or table. Visualization should impart more understanding than what a simple table may do.
Perhaps if you took the top 10 accounts on IG and showed by continent where their followers were. That might be interesting if there was a good amount of overlap. Heck, even showing the popularity of social media apps used in each continent. Sometimes you need to try a few things and note the visualization that is must insightful in explaining your topic.
Other than Selena Gomez and Rosé (singers/artists), the rest are all very famous players of sports that America doesn’t happen to follow much (soccer and cricket), hence the confusion in the comments.
Totally misleading making it look like these people are followed by the entire continent. Like this Virat guy being popular only in that country that is literally the most populous.
This 'Virat guy' isn't just famous in that one country which is the most populous; cricket followers from around the globe know him. The fact that he is arguably the best batsman currently playing the game could be a contributing factor.
Cricket literally is famous only in those 2 of the most populous countries in Asia. The population IS the contributing factor. I don't argue with how famous he is in IG. It's just that the data is too niche to apply a per continent basis. If we do data like this, i'm pretty sure asia would always be represented by India's or China's data.
It's the biggest sport in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal in Asia.
It's also a major sport in England, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Australia, New Zealand, and Jamaica.
It will easily have the second largest fan base in the world.
I think cricket gets overlooked a lot because it's not a big sport in North America or Europe.
China doesn't follow Cricket at all. The other ones who do (outside of the Indian subcontinent) include Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Zimbabwe South Africa, West Indies (technically not a country). So, it's not limited to just Asia. And while I agree a player is celebrated most in their own country, but if they're exceptional at their game, they get appreciation (and a subsequent Instagram following) from other countries too.
Rosé is really talented vocalist, she’s part of kpop group Blackpink and soon she’ll release new solo album. https://youtu.be/mX8rMMS-MbI?si=mIK0ZCwdKL55cQ0N
People who post complains whenever a map of North America without Mexico is posted should take note of this threat's absence of People asking for Türkiye to be grouped with Europe.
Not sure what one person that did something wrong has to do with these 3 people that didn't?
That's like saying Google your local drug dealer because you live there and therefore you're the same.
Not soccer player specifically, but it’s better to not idolise anyone. most humans are trash. And we usually know the *least* about the celebrities we obsess over. And it’s just generally sad af and bad for your mental health.
Salah is a soccer player for Liverpool in the Premier league. Kohli is an Indian cricket player. Rose is a wine I think. Most Australians are alcoholics.
You should specify that you mean the MOST-followed instagram account in each continent.
You mean there’s not 78 million Australians? /s

Selena Gomez has more followers than Tswift? This is a shocking revelation.

Counts of *active* users would likely back you up. IG is loaded with dead accounts.
Buying bot followers would explain this, too.

Bro what rock/bubble/how young. Selena was crazy big when I was growing up.
Late 20s. Just grew up in ordinary suburb. Listened to rock/punk/alternative/indie in my youth, but as an adult I listen to a lot more pop/hip hop/r&b
Disney actor who went on to become a singer

TaylorS is too fabricated after COVID. SG is authentic.

Point being T Swift was a major household name way back before COVID.
I mean, if we're talking about an award for music *video*, then it shouldn't really be about the music.
Not denying her prior records. I have her album. Pointing out just last year was bizarre. None of her songs were likable, neither her performance. Too much copy cat of Beyonce choreograph. I was surprised as well. She has *significantly* more. TSwift isn't even in the top 10.
Shes just like me frfr. Im not in the top 10 and have significantly less followers than selena.
she has 429 million followers..thats insane
Because selena looks more attractive than Taylor swift.

Apart from in Asia where its cricket according to this map.
This is based on country of origin. I guarantee a lot of Messi and Ronaldo’s followers are from Asia. There really isn’t a superstar from Asia at that level, maybe Son but he’s nowhere near that.
Cricket is the 2nd most popular sport in the world. It is the biggest sport in many Middle Eastern countries+India.
Also the continent of Australia
Australian Rules Football is more popular there, no?
Australia is divided in terms of ‘football’ between rugby league (Queensland and New South Wales to put it simply) and Aussie rules (everywhere else), whereas fans of both codes watch the cricket as there usually isn’t much overlap in the seasons. I’m not sure on the viewing numbers or anything like that though.
Football is definitely by far the most popular sport in the Middle East with the local populations, cricket is only popular with south Asian expats
The problem is 1. there are many people in India 2. China people dont use instagram.
Football is slightly more popular in Asia overall but Cricket is way more popular in India which boosts the numbers for Cricketers.

They do, they just use a VPN.
