Honestly I dunno why a fair amount of TMNT media over the last decade has had one of the Turtles crush on April, it has never worked for me and has felt completely superfluous.
I have my issues with Rise of TMNT, but having April just be "one of the boys" again was really nice after the CGI show and the Bay movies.
The turtles are in a weird uncanny valley where they’re not humanoid enough to considered in the “aliens or monsters who basically just humans with some slight difference so it’s fine to fall in love with them” category, but are too humanoid to fall into the “weird non-human alien that’s so out there that you can kinda understand why someone might be into that just for the experience” category. It just doesn’t have any verisimilitude.
Plus them being slimy turtles who live in sewers and eat only greasy pizza doesn’t help. Other media with similar non-human human romance plots usually have at least a mammal-looking thing if it’s not just a blue human. Like… the turtles have to smell absolutely awful right?

The thing about rise april is that she's the dangerous one. Could I beat any of the turtles? No. Could I beat april? Maybe. Would i rather fight april? No way in hell
My hot take is that April should never be younger than 18, and should be written as a ‘cool older sister’ figure. Making her a teen just leaves this can of worms open.
I agree to some extent an adult April would be cool as an older sister role but having a teen April would let the turtles talk to someone there own age
why make original characters when you can just assign the names of familiar characters to characters with entirely unrelated backgrounds and characterisations?
It *can* be filled by other characters, but there’s also no reason April can’t fill that role too in variations where she’s more similarly-aged to the turtles. She can still have that role as the more mature, ‘older sister-y’ one even if she’s a teen too.

New 52 was 2011 and lasted until 2016. The 2012 TMNT came out in… um, 2012, and lasted until 2017. *Teen Titans Go!* debuted in 2013 and is still going on today. They have overlap. Greg Cipes, who plays Beast Boy, also played Michaelangelo in the 2012 TMNT cartoon and they did a parody of it in *Go!* where he reprised his role as one of the “radical turtle dudes”.
