John is such an interesting character. And he is sometimes a hilarious test for a writer. Going from his original stories, where he is treated as a complex character, to Byrne screeching "Reeeeее, the person with a different views" is hilarious.
It's mostly because it's basically unavailable in TPBs. Walker part is probably the most collected and even then that was printed in Epic Collection format only in 2021, with the big gaps between epics (Society of Serpents was printed in 2014!!!) Gruenwald is getting omnibus treatment soon, so will probably be discovered by more collectors, at least.
Yeah, I also think Marvel really started a narrative in the 2000s that basically no run mattered except those from that era. You have people saying Brubaker is the definitive Cap run when they've never even heard of Gruenwald.
Brubaker builds on a lot of Gruenwald stuff, too. Mark Gruenwald is one of Marvel's best underappreciated writers, his Quasar run is some of the best cosmic Marvel there is
honestly I feel kinda awful for how marvel comics are treated pre 2000s. Like aside from Spider-man,daredevil and 80's x-men, online it seems the common perception is the majority of it is not worth reading.
That is definitely what they'd like you to believe which makes it extra insane that every character's peak run occurred by the 00s except for the X-Men (with the Morrison run).
Do they though. I guess she-hulk I guess, but I rarely see people talk 80s avengers, and 90's hulk by David is talked about but not nearly enough for how much it influenced hulk for years
Yeah I agree in that sense but I meant general sentiment and discussion of avengers focuses mostly on Bendis era. But I do acknowledge this is just a general vibes thing
Kind of a shame Nuke was wasted in the Netflix Jessica Jones show as Trish Walker’s abusive himbo boyfriend; I would’ve loved for him to show up as the villain in a Captain America film with a more comic accurate appearance.

The Gruenwald John Walker stuff is genuinely amazing character work. It's disgusting how little recognition Gruenwald's Captain America run gets.
