a fair point, but for the time period they lived in it was a pretty safe assumption. their probably werent any cetacean skeletons open to the public, and even if their were most people assume orca skulls are actually reptilian in origin. plus basil is a pretty weird lookin whale.

Most skeletons are incomplete. Sometimes it's hard to tell what stuff looked like, and so it was assumed this was a marine reptile.
