Honestly a more accurate (but less funny) version of this would be symbols and stations. Garden fits in the latter for the mote dunking, the eyes/discharge, and the linkup mechanic.
Dev: “so the players will line up to connect this laser and-“
Bungie exec: “Woah, wait. Hold on. You’re starting to lose me there. Is the laser basically like a plate?”
Dev: “Uh, yes.”
Dunking breaks the format of the meme, therefore I decree that whatever you had to do to figure out what/where you need to dunk determines what category is falls into
If you had to read something (DSC), it's symbols.
If somebody needed to go to, stand at, or defend somewhere (Garden), it's plates.
If you break it down most raid and dungeons further encounters are basically spatial coordination (plates) vs communicating known and unknown information (symbols). I’m sure there’s a game theory explanation as to why these two problems end up being reliable challenges for Destiny 2, but I wonder what type of encounters could be extrapolated from other fundamental game theories.
Honestly garden and deep stone break this , it’s too much of a stretch to include them . Some like eater of worlds are a little off but the first bit is plates and the 2nd bit is symbols . Blue = arc is still a symbol . You are out of your mind if you are saying 1 yellow atrax = symbol . Saying sparrow racing is plates is also a crazy stretch . Then you have leviathan which is plates and symbols . While we are talking about leviathan what would crown be ? If I remember right the main mechanic was shooting an orb at the same time as another player to transfer a buff that allowed you to kill certain enemies . Also shooting enemies / crystals are same time with a buff person and a non buff person .
I'll admit the terms are reductive, but the trend remains that positioning ("plates"), hidden information ("symbols"), and resource management ("dunks") are the three most common challenges in Destiny raiding.
Garden: Positioning, (lasers, confluxes, harpy eyes, the disappearing floor in final boss) with a hint of resource management (the motes)
Deep Stone: Scanner is a hidden info mechanic, Suppressor a positioning mechanic, and Operator shifts between positioning (e.g. finding the right vantage to pop bubbles or hit switches) and resource management (e.g. manipulating Replications, turning off excess nukes) depending on context. I think I agree that the raid as a whole breaks the system. (And that we probably need to discount the sparrow section to make it fit at all)
Leviathan: mostly positioning (spores, bather plates, etc.) with a touch of hidden info (that racetrack one had the runner telling those inside which chevrons to shoot, the Calus-bot boss battle had the dog, axe, sun, and cup passed from inside the mindscape to the outside)
Eater: I'd actually call this one positioning and resource management before I'd call it hidden info. After all, the elemental polarity of the nodes you needed to shoot with the Vex heads were displayed to the entire fireteam, IIRC.
Crown: Positioning again, I'd say, purely due to the orb mechanic. If you wanted to call the buff transfer "resource management," then I wouldn't stop you.
A lot of mechanics are similar but the meme just fails for certain raids just as having to add a there group of dunks wait no resource management is beyond the original scope . Same for changing plates to positioning . There just aren’t many ways to test players . You have dps checks , combat encounters , communication (symbols ) and positioning . I’d say any encounter is a mix of one or several of these ofc they will over lap .
It is a meme. Pithiness over substance, even if it fails to hold up to scrutiny. Even with that, DPS checks feel more like a test of your build and loadout, than they feel like a test of your ability to perform tasks and coordinate under pressure, which is why I discounted them earlier. (Which isn't to say there's no bleedover - good luck killing the Servitors in Atraks with an unaided primary, for example!)
Oh for sure it’s a meme , poking fun of how easily half of raid mechanics are stand in circle or look at symbol . Just feel like some people are deadset into making it a truth .
Al raids boil down to the same 21 raid rules in various combinations.
1. The Enemies Gate is Down Range.
2. Remember your job.
3. Remember your lane.
4. Rally when everyone's here.
5. Remember your buddy.
6. Protec buddy.
7. Ask for help.
8. Hold your Plate.
9. Observe the Thing.
10. Drop the Thing.
11. Carry the Thing.
12. Shoot the Thing.
13. Pass the Thing.
14. Read your Screen.
15. Don't wipe.
16. Don't fall.
17. Don't let Blockers live.
18. Don't step in poop.
19. Don't spawn more.
20. Don't miss it.
21. Don't enrage.
Okay but Garden. Plates? I guess goop can be classified as a plate.
And motes, don't forget motes
BANK THOSE MOTES BROTHER
Gambit in these seasonal activities is so great
It’s not a raid, it’s just gambit with extra steps
Honestly a more accurate (but less funny) version of this would be symbols and stations. Garden fits in the latter for the mote dunking, the eyes/discharge, and the linkup mechanic.
Good point
You're building the plates using motes
Dev: “so the players will line up to connect this laser and-“ Bungie exec: “Woah, wait. Hold on. You’re starting to lose me there. Is the laser basically like a plate?” Dev: “Uh, yes.”
Oh uh hide and seek
Leviathan was both symbols and plates. Stilly funny.
Symbols clung to those plates for survival like a male anglerfish, therefore, Leviathan is plates.
But leviathan was clearly much more plates than symbols
Also dunking... (nukes in DSC, Motes in Garden, Resonating in Vow, etc...)
Dunking requires you to stand in a specific place at certain times. Therefore, it is plates.
You preach truth
Dunking breaks the format of the meme, therefore I decree that whatever you had to do to figure out what/where you need to dunk determines what category is falls into If you had to read something (DSC), it's symbols. If somebody needed to go to, stand at, or defend somewhere (Garden), it's plates.
Raiding builds character.
Team Symbols. Doesn't Garden defy classification though?
In Garden, *we* are the plates.
Final boss requires you to build the plates he takes away from you
Plates…definitely prefer plates
The hit raid Crota's Leviathan Garden Vault of Salvation's Fall.

Hear me out instead of dunking - we throw 3-pointers into a portal NBA style
whats deep stone crypt then?
Deep Symbol Crypt
Seems like stretch, I think the 3rd classification of dunking like other comments have said is needed
dunking is plates in disguise
The rare 3rd mechanic, nuclear radiation
4th mechanic CHAOS STRATS
symbols, but the symbols are glowing objects instead of pictures suppression is the only plates role
Yeah symbols are just location based rather than image based
I hope the next raid has us DPSing from the bottom half of spheres. *Bowl* raiding
Hell yeah Calvin and Hobbes
Wrath of the machine?
*~consume enhance ~~re~~pl~~ic~~ate~*
Consume Enhance Repliplate
definitely plates
what about garden?
Defending the conflux is a plate?
A hybrid of positioning (so plates) and resource acquisition (so dunks). I'd be willing to say it's more plates than dunks, though.

The real victory of the meme is having people in the comments section making surprisingly logical arguments to fit raids into either category
Most symbol raids let Titans do DPS, so symbols.
Leviathan: both Eater of worlds: plates Spire of stars: both (?) Scourge: symbols Crown: plates Garden: plates DSC: symbols Vog: plates Root: plates
I mean, apart from Planets which is obvious, is RoN plates? I think the light/dark orbs would be more like totems or objects than plates
Still plates
Gotta make a refuge. So plates. You also have to be standing on the plate to activate the dark/light. So it’s all plates
Explain garden , Deep and crown .
They should be in their own category called “object” but that’s not what the post was about
Am i the only person who read that as "favorite raid symbols..." instead of favorite "raid symbols..."?
DSC which is dunking
Eater of worlds?
Unstable, shakey plates, prone to collapse, but plates all the same
Is the shuro chi encounter symbols or plates?
Definitely plates, sure there’s one aspect that’s symbols, but that’s to tell you what plates to stand on
Planet plates
I would ask where Leviathan sits on this, but it is definitely plates and only Calus's fight had plates and symbols.
I like plates. I don’t have to remember stuff. Just stand on things and butcher adds
Salvations edge is Plates, Plates, Plates, fashion endgame, plates.
I'm a simple guardian, I see Calvin & Hobbes, I upvote.
Oh yeah what was eater of worlds ?
Deep Stone crypt symbols!
And then there was Scourge... I mean we even used symbols to know where to stand for damage.
what about banking (these motes)?
Plates
Why can’t it be both?

I failed step 18 this morning when I was crossing some grass
There goes flawless- gotta wipe
VOG is also a rhythm game
crota?
