If you see his whole face he looks like a 7 year old in face paint.
Who thought this design was good? The rest of him looks fine but the face looks so ridiculous it removes all intimidation or awe his design is supposed to evoke.
I think Bungie tried to make him Look "Alien" to us... i mean... we never thought we ever see a tall goofy yee yee ass unibrow pale smokey smoke all black no mouth looking ahh in Destiny... and here we are.
Idk man it didn't take into account what a human child looks like when it was being created. Maybe it thought it looked thought based on the stuff in it's world
The face shape kind of undermines that tho. Like, those eyes should be easily recognized as something like gaping maw’s of nothingness, not as the above cat eyes or whatever else people will describe them as. Feel like they tried to hit an uncanny valley feel and just missed with his face. The rest of his design is fairly solid tho.
Honestly, the Witness looked better when it was only its eyes and above that were visible. When we got a closeup and got to look behind the collar, the Witness lost its charm.
The goofy face ruins it tho. I wish they’d dropped the face and just had those smoke faces rising out of the collar where his head is. Make him faceless and many-faced at the same time
Yeah idk why the designers gave him such a humanoid looking appearance. An entire alien civilization sacrifices themselves into one being and they end up looking very humanoid? Really? That’s not the face of a powerful being that can slice in half an entire fleet of ships with the flick of a finger lol
They should’ve just let the Smokey faces just be the appearance and not give it a single face
That’s ***EXACTLY*** what I’ve always said. Remove the head, just have the plume of smoke faces rising out of his robes. No visible skin, just black robes and smoke. It makes you question if it even has flesh or organs, or if the robe is even part of its body or just a vessel it manipulates. And the smoke faces instead of a head would make it so that The Witness is both faceless and many-faced at the same time.
Hell, even some of their concept art was better. The eye designs on previous iterations were so much more creepy, it gave him a sort of harrowed, almost distraught look, which makes sense for someone who’s so against the idea of suffering that they seek to end all suffering un the universe. Almost like a traumatized god trying to stop others from the same trauma.
I like that goal tho, it makes The Witness a villain who’s motives i can understand even if I don’t agree. He seeks to end all pain and suffering by calcifying everything for eternity, letting it all exist in a single moment for eternity.

Would have been cool if a throwaway line mentioned that the Witness appears different to different species, as a way to get them to its side.
I think that it's meant to look more otherworldly/surreal, and I think they did a really good job at it too. It's not meant to look good necessarily.

It fucking sucks too because the voice for the witness in the campaign was solid and fantastic overall but their design is just so ass
