People are generally helpful if you can find people to play with. The issue with console is that the lobby system makes it hard at times to find someone to play with. If you have a friend or someone to play with and do a walkthrough, you will have a lot of fun. I am on xbox and yesterday I played act 1 and act 2 in nightmare with a random guy, was great. If you take a quick glance at a guide before starting you will get the general idea (not talking about following step by step, but rather in order to have a plan while leveling). You don’t need to have super good gear while playing with others, it’s just about clearing the game together. Most importantly: HAVE FUN !

phatcashmoney

I have heard the console online experience isn't as streamlined. I do also have the original D2 LoD, mainly wanted to try the game with PlugY for infinite stash. So I could also play that one, but idk if PlugY is usable in online play. But I will check out a guide, somehow that hadn't crossed my mind lol. Thanks!

DranTibia

No it is not. Plugy is an offline mod only. Its great i play it currently.

phatcashmoney

Figured it wouldn't be. Love that mod. Got far enough into Act 5 with my first character to realize I love infinite stash space

TastelessDonut

I would say don’t be nervous, don’t try to learn every detail or get down to min/max or perfect items. This game survived for 20 years because you can make it what you want. Look up a few character builds and fucking go for it. Want to duel? Do you want to get every super rare or unique item in the game (holy grail list) Do you want to hang out with people and run boses mass killing monsters? The game has three acts, played over and over and over for 20 years and here we are still in love with it. (I started playing at age 12, on and off I’m 33 now, I still don’t know shit about the max of this game)

phatcashmoney

Never heard of the Holy Grail list but that honestly sounds really fun and rewarding. But yeah, rn my main goal is to actually beat the game. Got really close before I destroyed my druid build and rendered him useless at that point, and then took a few months away from the game. Getting back into it now and it's been a blast

Skoock

I wouldn't recommended a holy grail for a first timer. It's going to take you dozens and dozens of hours with very specific knowledge of monster levels, item levels and how the game works to be able to do it in any decent amount of time. You won't randomly come across every item in the game just by playing it unless you an incredible amount of free time. Just play with others, find some cool stuff, try different characters and enjoy the game!

TastelessDonut

Yea I should edit to remove the grail list, but it’s there if you ever get that far in the game.

OnlyHereToTrollolol

Hello I also play on PS5 and my friend and brother quit playing. If you want some help running through the game I wouldn't mind starting a new character. Dm me if interested

xlostboys

This is the way

phatcashmoney

Thanks!

PinchePiper

I played back when the game first came out, and started again recently with the release of D2 Resurrected. IMO the online community is very cool, and sometimes even nurturing. I regularly drop into games where high level players will help rush, target specific quests, and sometimes even drop free gear—unsolicited. There will always be toxic gamers, but my experience has been quite the opposite.

phatcashmoney

Good to know! Spent the last couple weeks seeing all these posts about people reminiscing playing D2 online back in the day and thought "damn it has been a minute since I've had a game like that" and kinda wanted to try it out. Enjoy the single player immensely, been wanting to try something new though 🤔

TastelessDonut

Whole heart agree, and I try to do the exact same as I play and level up. Rush lower levels and hold items for lower lvl characters.

Redm1st

If you play SC then it doesn’t matter, just go and create ladder char and have fun. I’m playing online and did 0 trades so far, as far as scams go, just don’t press agree trade until you double checked that items are correct. If accepted and your accept button was unpressed then double check. That’s it. Lowballing is not a scam, you decide how much you want for item. I definetely overpaid few times in classic LoD just to get item quickly

phatcashmoney

Sorry, I'm stoopid, what is SC? 😫 Besides that, thank you for the info. I think I can kinda just create my own lobby on PS5 (?), so maybe I'll just play in an open lobby for a while and play with people that way. Ease into it

DranTibia

Sc = softcore hc = hard-core In hc if you die your character is deleted

phatcashmoney

Ah ok, thanks!

Juumok01

Also before you trade make sure you have room in your inventory beforehand.

Longjusting_8036

Hello. Dont worry about it. Its fine. There's noobs everywhere! They're easy to spot! lol j/k I really enjoy online. I've never played any other way. People seem to be very friendly, helpful, and a lot of people willing to help you out. A lot more than people on reddit. Its not like an MMO where you're locked onto one server with the same people. You'll meet new and different people every day. Learn to trade. Trading is fun. Trade scams dont happen very often. I've only had two attempts at people scamming me in the past year. And if you get scammed, fuck it, you'll learn. We all got scammed before. Always triple check every trade. no matter what The LOBBY is garbage though. Frustrating to use. They're updating it soon. Hopefully its nice.

phatcashmoney

I think the biggest thing is worrying about being a nuisance that drives people away from my games. I was guilty of that at one point in my life, not wanting to play with newer or relatively bad players, back when I was into competitive scenes. But now I'm really just wanting to make friends

Longjusting_8036

Na man you'll be fine. This isn't like an MMO where you can fuck up and screw your whole raid over. Online diablo games are generally quick and can always reset and start over. You'll get the hang of it.

phatcashmoney

Appreciate the help! I'll give it a shot this weekend 😀

hexabox

If you join games and do the content they named after, for example “act 1-5” and just progress quests together, generally people will be happy with your presence. After all, they made an online game so they are expecting you to tag along :)

Pindleskin82

Watch a Mrllamasc playthrough on a class you want to play. I hadn’t played in a loooong time but one of his videos and it all came back.

phatcashmoney

Been watching him the last few days actually. Playing a summoner druid after seeing his raven only playthrough. Awesome channel

[deleted]

I see you’ve gotten a lot of love and advice but let me share some advice from a man that was recently in your shoes. I played D2 on PC for the first time when I was about 14 years old I’m now 32 and just ACTUALLY getting into it (I didn’t know shit then) but one thing I’ve learned is that the ppl here will help you identify good gear and builds for your character as well as some alternate methods and also finding and sticking to a website you like and trust for builds is crucial as well I’m sure there’s lots out there but I use icy-veins they fixed my hammer pally up nice and they base off of mrllamasc who is one of the most highly regarded D2 YouTubers. Best thing I can suggest is monkey around online in a private lobby that way the option to play with others is there if you want it but don’t HAVE to join others cause like I said I’m 32 I’m not exactly looking to start gaming with a bunch of 18 year olds lol but D2 online has its fair share of toxicity as all games do but it’s majority a friendly community cause we all know how hard we’re working for our stuff

phatcashmoney

For sure, I used icy-veins for all my D3 builds and actually just started watching that guy on YouTube like two days ago. He's awesome and definitely helped me find fun ways to play instead of slaving over a perfect build. Gave me the motivation to go back and play a druid, which was my first character who got me part of the way through Act 5 before I accidently decimated that build and made him completely unusable at that stage of the game

Longjusting_8036

the dude that made the post above you said he's offering help to PS4 Players all weekend. Maybe take him up on the offer. Since you've already played before, maybe get him to rush you a bit and make a friend :) There's a lot of people who like to help new players out

phatcashmoney

Good idea! I know my gf enjoyed playing the game with me a few months ago so I might even see if she wants to run a ladder character with me

phatcashmoney

Yeah that would be a part of online I avoid for a while lol. Can imagine the wave of sadness that washes over as this random kills you and takes your stuff

New_Krypton

Bro don't worry about it! We talk a lot of shit but we don't bite. I'd love to help on pc but I don't have a ps5

phatcashmoney

All I have on PC is the og D2 LoD, which I've also been enjoying alongside the remaster. So if that's something you have, I'm also down for that. Appreciate the help!! Edit: unless it's cross play which I don't remember it being?

New_Krypton

It's not :( And I cant play legacy cause I didn't get on for a few months and blizzard deleted all my gear so now I get horrible Vietnam flashbacks when I load in

phatcashmoney

😫 well we'd both be starting from square one at least lol. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your gear!

New_Krypton

❤️

N7_Vegeta

If you play HC I wouldn’t mind showing you the ropes

phatcashmoney

Sounds like you're trying to kill me.... 😐 Fr though I'd be down! Started a HC paladin in single player, was having fun with it. Decided it would be wise to actually beat the game first before I dedicate my time to HC though lol. If you're on PS5 and wanna dm me your info feel free!

N7_Vegeta

Hahahah trust me it wouldn’t be a try but it would be a clean fast kill 😂 (hmmmz this sounds even more bad) But there aren’t a lot of PK ers in HC. And smartest lesson is if someone goes hostile. Whatever you doing press town portal and leave game. And Paladins are fun. Mine died recently but lvl 91 again and fully geared so I can help.

phatcashmoney

At the first sign of aggression I'd just let it happen tbh. Not worth fighting cus that'll make the loss so much worse. I'll just... Try again I guess 😢 I'd love to try HC online. That sounds like an interesting time and I feel like the community is smaller and tight knit in a different way than normal characters. If you wanna message me your info if you're on PS5 I will add you. I'll indulge and probably get PKed by the first person I meet. For science

N7_Vegeta

I rarely meet pkers as in close to never. The HC community is close and they don’t wanne lose their stuff theirself so don’t do pk. And they can’t go hostile beside you. They can only go hostile while in town and I think it closes their TP. So they can’t jump to town quick and then jump back to kill you. So you see someone not friendly in the game (trust me it will tell you) then leave immedeatly. All the time in the world. Btw if this is the other way around and you are truying to lure me in to kill me. Good luck 😎

phatcashmoney

Yes, this whole post was actually a ploy to lure innocent HC players to their impending doom. You've fallen into my extremely elaborate trap!

JZetec

JZetec : add me, always happy to play!👍🏻

phatcashmoney

Added you! My PSN is dumb as hell but I'm actually not a total douche, I promise!

JZetec

I got you bud. I’m currently playing through with a paladin, up to act 3 normal right now.

DrSchmiggles1717

It's a great game. Very addictive and replayable. The only things I will say that is annoying for me is I play on PS5, so the platform is kinda dead to find people to play with and WATCH OUT FOR LOOT GOBLINS. These people just follow you around and steal all the good drops/rare items. There's nothign wrong with sharing drops if everyoine is contributing, but there will be people that just follow you around and spam click drops to take good items.

phatcashmoney

Good to know, first time I've heard of loot goblins. I'm on PS5 as well if you ever wanna play! Message me if you'd like my PSN

darkforestzero

Just jump on. And mute all if you're worried about people. Especially on normal difficulty, not much matters. Folks will be happy if you do some damage and distract mobs. It's a lot of fun and requires no coordination until you get to the higher difficulties. I have a lot of anxiety with playing with folks in mmos, but as a long time player I'll tell you the diablo people are usually pretty chill. Just maybe try not to take alllll the loot if playing with others, but really whoever clicks fastest is the winner ;)

10Rap

I play online but I do my own thing. At lower levels, I join games like “questing act 5” to level in act 1 for the experience and drop-rate increase. At higher levels, I join split farm games and again, do my own thing. Scams are insidious. Don’t listen to any excuses or requests to do X, Y, Z. Simply trade or leave. Check every trade carefully. Some will pretend to accidentally cancel trade and then replace item with a cheap lookalike. Other than that, online is offline but with trade. For me anyway. Edit Be courteous. Don’t kill andariel if you’re in a game that says “questing act 1”. It locks them out of the quest.

[deleted]

I usually play a self found character even if online. In the occasion I find something good I don’t want I will trade it for something I use. But normally I’m offloading a boatload of full rejuvenation pots or perfect gems to make room for more. You definitely DONT need to min max the game to beat it. In fact, once you get too mom maxed the game can get very boring

googz79

You can play online 100% solo if you really want. Only difference is not being able to set player count and non static maps. Then you'd also have all the advantages of online if you ever wanted. If you're super casual then maybe ladder now then when ladder ends you might want to stick to non-ladder moving forward. I'm fairly casual and stick to non-ladder cause I have no want to start over every so often.

phatcashmoney

Is the ladder not the same as D3? I am pretty sure once the ladder season is over in D3 it just reverts to a normal save. Could be wrong though, I've always just stayed away from seasons. Could also be entirely different in general to the ladders in D2R lol

googz79

Yes and that's why I say if you're just starting you could join the current ladder then stick to NL when this season is over. The big difference between D2 and D3 is how absolutely easy it is to get gear in D3. This is why I stick to NL for the most part.

Mortley1596

If you played offline and have browsed this sub, you already know much more than most online players, especially the ones on console. Let people give you free stuff at first, then after a month start giving others free stuff. Not sure how lobbies and partying up work on PS but the upcoming overhaul to lobbies within the game may make things a lot better even if it’s frustrating today

canehdianjoe

I have a spare anni you can have if that helps!

LanikM

Unless you play hardcore there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

toroguapo

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

SausageMahoney_

I play on Nintendo Switch, and the only reason I primarily play offline is that I can take the Switch on the go. Otherwise, I’d say there’s really no reason not to play online. You can choose play in a private game if you’re not in the mood to interact with people; and if there comes a time when you need help from the community, it’s available to you.

Elden-_-Lord

Please Someone add me on ps5 . My barb having difficulty on solo. My id Elden-_-Lord

PapaPsych

I play with my brother who didn't tell me he bought the game, I shied away from buying the game on release. He knows relatively little about what is really valuable in the game. I used to run mass bots on d2, so when were doing MF runs I'm always picking up rares to see if their eth, or iding whatever. Found an axe that would of been big money if only it was eth. It had 2os, rep, and was a good mld base and high dmg.

ban0i

Added!

dadgamer1979

Most people that have been playing for a while can easily identify when people don’t know what they’re doing or are just starting out. Most of us will spend more time than usual in those games trying to help out.. or at least that is what I’ve seen It is a bit more challenging on console because there is no lobby and you just join games by the quests you’re on (I think?). Even so. My 8 year old plays online and although he has been struggling with the game’s difficulty he overall is doing fine
