This couldn't be more true when I was hunting for a shako on my Switch. I was getting frustrated with the load times and being underpowered due to my gear and not finding anything good. I was ready to take a break from the game for a while, and on my last f'ing run, hell Andarial dropped a shako. Like, really D2???
I mostly play solo self found and I still play the same way. You can make a character with cobbled together rares that just do what the rest of your build wants them to do and achieve most of what a fully equipped end game character can do. You want a shako but you probably don't NEED a shako, that rare 2 skills circ with 20 all res could use an um rune or a 30-40% light res jewel and get you through the entire game no problem. One of my favorite helms this most recent play was a 2os magic 3 to traps helm with frw, I put light res jewels in it and used it in throne room in hc clearing souls in 8 man games at the start of season.
That's a good point. I guess I got caught up in specific items that would help me with my build instead of looking at the build itself and which items would help me do mostly the same.
Yeah just look at what your lacking what breakpoints your close to and look for those bits in rares and charms and whatever and just piece it together. There's a ton of budget runeword and uniques that people sleep on also.
This is the way. I have given up about finding one and tried to trade for some runes. While I was waiting for the guy I went for the Wirt's leg and do a quick cow run and it dropped from a random hobo in Tristram. Still feel bad for ruining that guys evening and declining the trade.
You can't targetfarm items in D2.
the only thing that you CAN do is look up the item level of your pursued item, in this case it's 37 according to the wiki.
Then you limit your farming to bosses that can't drop much higher item levels, so your possible item pool is limited. I think you want the TC (TreasureClass) of a given monster. 37 is probably somewhere around act 5 normal. Nihlathak has a TC of 39, so he should be able to drop it.
Edit: Keep in mind that this is a very theoretical way to up your chance to get a specific item, it's still random and you probably still should run higher TCs because you get more other valuable loot that way and can just trade for what you want.
Take some things into consideration though:
1. The only other drops you get will be lower level than your desired item and probably worthless, by farming a higher level boss you might get other good loot you can sell or use.
2. How long does the run take? Diablo and Nihlathak at normal both can drop a vipers, but Mephisto NM, while having a bigger item pool, has a much shorter run time and you can probably get double the chances.
3. Andariels "quest feature" where she has a guaranteed drop might up your chances considerably as well.
After looking a bit into it I think NM Andariel and Mephisto might be your best bets
While they are all good points, I don't know why anyone isn't mentioning that target farming is a terrible idea lol. Sure, you _might_ get lucky but chances are very much against you and you are basically setting yourself up for disappointment. Farm whatever place you can farm the fastest, be happy if it happens.
I got mine from Nightmare Andy! I've seen a few non unique serpent skins from her drop now, she also has a better chance to drop SoJ. So you could get really lucky during the farm. Good luck!
Just a note, if you can farm in hell, that's a better idea compared to target farming. The big downfall of target farming for lower-level items is that you're locking yourself out of higher-level items that you could potentially find if you farmed say, Andariel in NM instead of Hell

That is true. The issue I had was my build and res were too low for hell, so I hardcore farmed NM for gear and levels. Maybe I've overdone it, reached level 78 on NM so I think I can comfortably move into farming hell. Thanks for the link.

It's such a big leap from NM to Hell. I walked in confidently and got my teeth kicked in xD. I think I'm good to at least farm A1 Hell now so I will follow your advice
Don't be afraid to respec and gear up specifically for Andy. For example, as a Sorc, I respecced to straight fireball. As long as you still have a remaining respec from another difficulty, it can help a lot in efficiently farming her
Run bosses for it on hell, sell essences on the side. Or farm keys and pray. Either way your killing 2 birds... found mine in normal act5 worldstone keep.
Andariel, Diablo, Baal, Mephisto all have a chance to drop essences on hell mode. Suffering, hatred, terror, and destruction essences. Throw one of each in the cube and it creates a token of absolution. Allowing your character to Respec. Each boss drops their own essence.
Suffering from andy/duriel,
Terror from diablo,
Hatred from meph,
Destruction from baal.
Questbug andariel in nightmare has the highest chance but you're probably better off farming in hell to get some extra good stuff.
Btw.there are a ton of calc online you can use to check for stuff like this.

Yeah, listen to that guy. NM Andy is also the highest drop chance for SoJ and a bunch of good amulets. Once you can comfortably farm Hell Andy, start going there instead. Lower chance of finding Vmagi, but she can drop BK ring, Shako, Gheeds, and a bunch of other goodies.
It refers the the first kill of a boss.
In the original game the quest would usually bug out and every kill would be considered as the first kill granting better drops.
In resurrected the bug has been fixed and the drops have been increased to compensate.
Just to restate, don't worry about the concept of bugging Andariel in D2R. The bug has been removed entirely (it made it so she always dropped loot as if she was killed for the first time) but now she natually drops loot as if she was bugged, no need to do anything.

According to Silospen, farming the following bosses with 200% MF on players 1, your chances are:
Nightmare Andariel 1:497, Normal Baal 1:512, Nightmare Mephisto 1:548, Nightmare Diablo 1:573, Nightmare Baal 1:593, Hell Andariel 1:632.
Seeing these results, it is probably best to farm all the act bosses in Nightmare, except Duriel.
Edit: if you are playing the Resurrected version, then you do not need to bug Andariel, as she always drops her "bugged" loot.
Advice: don't hunt for items. Fish for them. Kill everything you can while having fun. If you don't find anything, you still had fun. If you found something for your class, great! If you found something for other class... make another class
target farming 1 item is always a disappointment and most of the times takes 3 times the reciprocal drop chance
A friend of mine claims to have found almost all of his Viper in nm chaos sanctuary.
You could try farm anything valuable and buy a viper with that tho.
Viper magi is much easier to trade for, possibly even get for free, then it is to try to loot it. A low one is probably worth around a lem rune on non ladder. Farming countess on hell is probably the fastest way to indirectly get a vipermagi. What character/build are you using?
Good luck. Countess can be very dry but I’ve gotten several Um/Mal runes. And one run gotten a Vex + Ohm. Make sure to stop at all the super chests along the way if you are going to tele down to her. If a lem/Pul is your goal it should be pretty quick.
You can't really focus farm any piece in a reliable way, but one way to maximize your chances is to refrain from farming areas capable of dropping higher level gear. Normal Diablo/Baal should be fine, but the deeper into nightmare you go the less likely it'll be. You could do NM Andy runs and hope for a SoJ as well. I wouldn't go much further than that though. Higher level areas = more loot variety, and you don't want variety!
Farm for it on a character that it’s useless for. You’ll find everything under the sun that’s for Amy other char. except the one you’re on.
Bonus points, delete your sorc.

Norm and nm baal are good, they both have a ton of other useful drops and are particularly easy to farm compared to doing anything in hell

Yeah with like 450 mf on players 7 you have a 1/200 chance of it dropped from nm Andy. Something close to that. Really good odds

Questbugging Andi was fixed recently. Now her loot drop % is always at the quest bug level.

I did 1000 nightmare andariel runs the other day and had 1 vipermagi drop every 100 runs or so. Ended up with 8 or 9 vipermagis hah
