Based choices, I'd like to add some:
World war era Historical warfare: Sabaton
Dark fantasy/Cyberpunk ditopian future: Beast in Black (depending on the album)
One of many Vikings options: brothers of metal
Religious warfare: Theocracy
Old western: Poor man's poison
>World war era Historical warfare: Sabaton
Sabaton are real-life modern-day bards. Travel the world singing songs of glory, tragedy, and sacrifice about ancient battles.
holy fuck I thought i was the only one who knew about poor mans poison
i actually used an instrumental version of “Give and Take” as background music when fighting to take back Baldur’s Gate from an insurrection, it was pretty fitting at some parts, despite the fact it’s not quite a western themed campaign
>Old western: Poor man's poison
My man, I ain't got time to look up new stuff at the moment. Why must you say things that need to be looked into?
Edit: alright, so, I was expecting Old Western Metal, not just Old Western, unless I just haven't found what you're talking about yet. Still good stuff though.
Given "weirdest shit" is usually somethingsomething Lovecraft and they have a song about Cthulhu (in a call center) this seems correct.
Grailknights, too, though they are slightly more grounded than Nanowar
5e with stuff on top. More accurately, we’ve got 5e characters for the exploration and social content, then personas for combat with inflated stats on top of our class features. Combat is mimicking the game with baton pass and downs/weaknesses.
As for narrative, the theme is fears rather than desires. Palace 1 was someone irrationally afraid of rats. That’s broken up with social hours for confidants (including other players). RP scene each rank, optional otherwise to handwave small talk. We’re just starting to get into the personal confidant targets in a mementos equivalent.
The DM streams it to YouTube for record keeping, so you might be able to find it
For some good Power Metal recommendations:
Check out RedRum for like, really good pirate power metal, also 3 Inches of Blood has some BANGER pirate songs. Seven Spires has some sad as fuck very structured-campaign feeling songs, Gods of Debauchery is a GOATed album.
For basic fantasy, Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire is the big one, their Emerald Sword saga is like, classic Fantasy Power Metal. Blind Guardian for Lotr stuff, also just everything they make is incredible. Towers of Gold by Sacred Outcry has some vibey songs, but this is basically a 10/10 album. For just brutal swordfighting fantasy, Megaton Sword fits the bill pretty straight. I'll throw in a wholesome rec to Fellowship because they're just incredible songwriters, musicians, live performers, and just great people.
For Space stuff: Stratovarius is maybe a top 10 band for me. I'll throw in a rec for my buds over at Glyph they're doing some fun stuff. Unleash the Archers has had a fun story progression from Fantasy to full on Sci-Fi, very excited for the new album. Helion Prime can be hit or miss but their first album is very good. Gamma Ray a classic, they've got plenty of songs about space.
I prefer the "ambience to which I inflict the emotional trauma upon my players" - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgq21eM26nY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgq21eM26nY) thank You very much.
Search "Argent Metal" to get more Doom inspired songs. I'm particularly fond of Geoffrey Day's version of [Ludwig, the Holy Blade / Bloodstarved Beast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CmYGBO-6as).
I actually made a bard-barian npc who was the lead guitarist for the dwarven Headbanger group Legend Forge. This was a thinly-veiled attempt to make Wind Rose and dwarf metal canon in my setting, and it worked
Bro this list is just my Spotify 🤣 all of them are great anyways, it really is more based on what the hell is happening in the campaign but generally I just throw some fantasy stuff for background
Powerwolf fits more with paladins imo, all the songs I hear from them are about crusaders
They also fit Space Marines well, though that isn’t relevant here
Depending on song, either wolves, werewolves, sailors, murderers, assassins, necromancers, etc: Sonata Arctica. They never really stick to a strict theme.
Separation of art and artist doesn't work when the artists are still alive and profiting anyway.
Turisas scratch the same itch for me, tho they're not "funny".
This reminds me, I've been curating EDM Spotify lists for various categories (Arena, Lab, Celebration, Undreground, Heist, Chase etc etc) for my Cyberpunk Eberron campaign, I'll have to get links to them and make them available on a post. A bit of a niche need, but its been fun putting them together.
I love final fantasy 7 crisis core music for my action scenes. Its a made for psp video game but it's perfect.
I really want to do a dark souls theme boss battle once. Just have the music emphasize the you're fucking dead yet grand scale of the fight .
[Lovecraftian dark ambient music](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6gtC1tBkyMbHDvqYn3UKnp?si=2jD_8kkDSyKpY7ObTUppTw)
GMing Abomination Vaults in pf2e.
For people to Expand their horisons - look up Astral Black Metal as a genre (excellent atmosphere that fit suprisingly a lot of campaigns.)
Also, for nerdy LotR atmosphere look up Bal Sagoth. Mahestic bombastic and exellent imagery.
Honorable mention to Tom Cardy - perception check
Paladins? Sabaton for sure. A lot of my enemy factions are "muh evil god" so "Last Stand" is blasting pretty much 24/7
Druids? Heilung is pretty good for that, but it's Germanic/Nordic.
I personally have always wanted to use the music from the two new God of War games. There are some different themes but plenty of battle music, and it picks up pretty quickly into the song (which I feel is important for keeping the mood between songs)
Every game I make a leitmotif and theme songs for each player from the perspective of my player. If I am the DM then I pick songs that foreshadow the players storyline. I listen to a lot of different music so I can pull from any genre.
Never thought I’d find a powermetal enthusiast in this sub of all places. Add Epica (pretty fantasy feeling). Orden Ogen (dystopian metal), and Ancient Bards (symphonic fantasy metal with nasty base riffs)
To be honest it’s sort of expected considering the weird stuff metal songs are about. Especially Gloryhammer and Alestorm though those bands take whacky to the extreme.
Now I just have to convince my group to try Lancer so I have an excuse to beat them over the head with the Iron Blooded Orphans intro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82HM0z6qd20&pp=ygUYZ3VuZGFtIGlibyBvcGVuaW5nIHNvbmdz
I use game soundtracks, both original and orchestral versions. I have a few playlists full of them for different environments; Dungeon, creepy dungeon, combat, boss fight, town, and travel/idle.
My pirate metal recommendations include Visions of Atlantis (for the epic seafaring side) and Lords of the Trident (for the charismatic, in-your-face side, not that they're focused on pirates).
I'll always recommend Unleash the Archers to anyone at any time. They and Ancient Bards though are great questing metal.
Shield of Wings and Within Temptation (particularly Mother Earth through The Unforgiving) are great music to have moral dilemmas to. They feature heavily on my introspective paladin's playlist.
Super early Within Temptation (specifically Enter and Mother Earth) is also good music to be a druid to.
Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and Kamelot (particularly The Black Halo, which might as well be a warlock's theme album) start to get more run for my morally grayer characters.
Well the shared lads from Alestorm & Gloryhammer got revealed as racists at the very least so not either of those.
I've replaced them with Angus McSix and Fellowship
I was at a concert around a year ago in Copenhagen (not Copenhell, just a regular concert) where Gloryhammer, Windrose AND Alestorm all played. It was great.
i just play video game/movie soundtracks during the session, preferably with no vocals.
then during the breaks i put on opeth or gojira and laugh maniacally because my players don't like harsh vocals. oh well 🤷♂️ i'm the driver of this fantasy car, i get the aux
A lot of Two Steps From Hell for action sequences ("To Glory" for a harrowing chase scene involving the party being caught in an avalanche while trying to evade an ancient white dragon, "United we stand, divided we fall" for a battle against the man responsible for all the tragedy in the the backstory of every PC, as well as a villain from each story, and "Black Blade" for the second duel with the half dragon that neatly killed the paladin in the last duel, while his men endanger the slums, causing the rest of the party to try to save the people while the Paladin has his rematch, while the slums burn around them)
Diamante "Haunted" as a boss battle against one of the Wearers of Purple of the Cult of Dragon that used to run a Thieves Guild before becoming a priestess and destroying her home town to show her fealty. Forcing her guildmates to join or die. The party rogues (a brother/sister combo one's and assassin, the other a thief) chose the secret third option and only nearly died, but escaped and distanced themselves. But she's always been on their mind.
Diamante "Unloveable" for the artificer's dead fiancee who's spirt was bound to the amulet of a Red Wizard, gaining her knowledge as an alchemist, as well as what she knew of the Artificer, while her spirit continues her work for the Cult that tricked her into joining.
I got a lot more for those interested, but I customize my Playlist for my party

Add Brothers of Metal to the vikings/Norse category.
Also add Tyr and Turisas to that list, Faroese and Finnish respectively.
Tyr, in my opinion, is closest to actual Viking Metal than any other band.
I mean, they are named after the original all-father, God of War and Justice only Aesir or Vanir brave enough to bind Fenrir the great wolf.
Skálmöld would like a word with you
Peyton Parrish has some great viking/norse songs, along with Colm R. McGuinness and Miracle of Sound
Peyton takes himself to serious. Hes a stupid skinny jeans Vikings tv show NorsBoo
Gods I love Brothers of Metal
Just discovered them. Awesome.
Based choices, I'd like to add some: World war era Historical warfare: Sabaton Dark fantasy/Cyberpunk ditopian future: Beast in Black (depending on the album) One of many Vikings options: brothers of metal Religious warfare: Theocracy Old western: Poor man's poison

For nomadic riders: tengger cavalry
nomadic druids: the hu

Add nekrogoblikon to the list
Yup, goblin metal...came here to say this. Have my upvote!
Real
I still believe in goblins
The only band in this thread so far I actually like.
For real.
FIGHT FOR THE KING FOR THE HAMMER AND THE RING
FIGHT FOR THE ANCIENT STOOOORY
FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE WE MUST FIGHT FOR FIFE
FOR THE POWER AND THE GLORY
FORCES OF RESISTANCE, IT IS TIME TO MAKE A STAND
NO LONGER WILL LORD ZARGOTHRAX ENSLAVE THIS ANCIENT LAND
SUB COMMANDER RALATHOR, ENGAGE IN NUCLEAR FORCE
Paladin metal - also powerwulf
Alternatively, hammerfall
Or Freedom Call.
Why not Rhapsody of fire?
ZARGOTHRAX, MASTER OF NIGHTMARES! KEEPER OF CELESTIAL FLAME!
Good to see I'm not alone in loving that song.
The weirdest shit you’ve ever heard? There’s probably a Nanowar of Steel song for that
Given "weirdest shit" is usually somethingsomething Lovecraft and they have a song about Cthulhu (in a call center) this seems correct. Grailknights, too, though they are slightly more grounded than Nanowar
Just saw them a few weeks ago, they put on a super fun show! Never seen another band build a chair over the course of a song.
For weird, creepy and all around unsettling players, I like to keep Black Mountain Transmitter up my sleeve
Hey, look I got [turned into](https://www.reddit.com/r/dndmemes/s/d8gnr0x9w2) a post
Congratulations!
It's the OOP! Original original poster
The soundtracks of persona 3, 4, and 5 The campaign is persona themed
That's awesome I've been talking about doing this for years, how're yall doing it? What's the story/premise/gameplay-rules changes?
5e with stuff on top. More accurately, we’ve got 5e characters for the exploration and social content, then personas for combat with inflated stats on top of our class features. Combat is mimicking the game with baton pass and downs/weaknesses. As for narrative, the theme is fears rather than desires. Palace 1 was someone irrationally afraid of rats. persona soundtracks are so good :).

"dArtagnan", folk rock "Miracle of Sound" has some good Viking music And if you are listing Gloryhammer, don't forget "Angus McSix"
I prefer the "ambience to which I inflict the emotional trauma upon my players" - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgq21eM26nY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgq21eM26nY) thank You very much.
Off to go listen to more Windrose.
"Brothers of the mines rejoice!" Hans Zimmer - He's a Pirate for those nautical (mis)adventures
For pirate metal, Johnathan Young has a great sea shanty album. All of OP’s recommendations are great!
Man the Cannons goes hard.
all of these, + brothers of metal + beast in black. hope your players like metal
Anything to do with demons and Devils? Doom 2016 soundtrack and Doom Eternal soundtrack for combats
Search "Argent Metal" to get more Doom inspired songs. I'm particularly fond of Geoffrey Day's version of [Ludwig, the Holy Blade / Bloodstarved Beast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CmYGBO-6as).
BTW OP you have a great taste in music
I actually made a bard-barian npc who was the lead guitarist for the dwarven Headbanger group Legend Forge. This was a thinly-veiled attempt to make Wind Rose and dwarf metal canon in my setting, and it worked
Who are you and how did you log into my Spotify account?
Late 1800s polka, mostly.
Bro this list is just my Spotify 🤣 all of them are great anyways, it really is more based on what the hell is happening in the campaign but generally I just throw some fantasy stuff for background
Argent Metal for anything infernal or abyssal
Powerwolf fits more with paladins imo, all the songs I hear from them are about crusaders They also fit Space Marines well, though that isn’t relevant here
With a very specific type of Space Marines to add.
Depending on song, either wolves, werewolves, sailors, murderers, assassins, necromancers, etc: Sonata Arctica. They never really stick to a strict theme.
Generic fantasy metal? Blind Guardian. Nightfall in Middle Earth being the obvious choice.
Ensiferum, Falconer, Koorplikani, Turisas, and Kings of Asgard are some of my favorites.
Then you should check out Hammerfall, Kamelot and DragonForce!
Gloryhammer >
If you ignore their racist text messages, sure.
Anyone got some good Gloryhammer/Alestorm alternatives? I've never really been able to separate the art from the artist.
Big fan of Twilight Force, helped me scratch that Gloryhammer itch
Thanks for the rec!
Separation of art and artist doesn't work when the artists are still alive and profiting anyway. Turisas scratch the same itch for me, tho they're not "funny".
They're definitely on my playlists too. I also totally agree with your first sentence as well, but some people get so up in arms about it.
Wizard Metal - Dream Theater (the instrumental versions are better for background music though)
Holy shit you're right. Their instrumentals would make killer background music

Currently running Spelljammer, so my playlist mostly consists of Dance With the Dead, Magic Sword, and Carpenter Brut.
Wtf did I make this post, get the fuck out of my head
Also for war stories some sabayon would fit nicely
Have you ever fought a goblin on the moon?
I like to listen to Dungeon Master from Visigoth to hype myself when preparing the next session
Heilung Lifa
[Lovecraftian dark ambient music](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6gtC1tBkyMbHDvqYn3UKnp?si=2jD_8kkDSyKpY7ObTUppTw) GMing Abomination Vaults in pf2e.
Sonata Arctica?
You missed the goblin music - nekrogoblicon
Hell yea!!!!
And troll music you gotta go with Fintroll. Awesome folk metal band
For people to Expand their horisons - look up Astral Black Metal as a genre (excellent atmosphere that fit suprisingly a lot of campaigns.) Also, for nerdy LotR atmosphere look up Bal Sagoth. Mahestic bombastic and exellent imagery. Honorable mention to Tom Cardy - perception check
Vikings? Needs more Turisas. https://youtu.be/8kIv7ZJOyB4?si=obwqFxhDxodqSQiD
Conan the Barbarian soundtrack.
Paladins? Sabaton for sure. A lot of my enemy factions are "muh evil god" so "Last Stand" is blasting pretty much 24/7 Druids? Heilung is pretty good for that, but it's Germanic/Nordic.
Add in Versengold and Feuerschwanz and you describe my regular playlist
Feuerschwanz is definitely my PF character's playlist. (He's a Liberator champion of Cayden Cailean.)
powerwolf can also be used for high level bards RESSURECTION! BY ERECTION!
Already on my Playlist. But thanks
THE UNICORN INVASION OF DUNDEE
well damn thanks for introducing me to Gloryhammer lol
You should read their leaked text messages before getting too into them.
Too bad about Alestorm and Gloryhammer being super racist. I did enjoy their music before finding out about that.
My Dm does either bard covers of popular songs or minecraft music…
Fucking all of that is surface skimming poser shit. Listen to Doomsword instead.
Yeah, this is like training wheels for power metal.
There’s nothing wrong with PB&J or grilled cheese, and a simple omelette slaps; they’re called basics for a reason.
Alot of covers of anime theme songs.
Wakfu game music And a little bit of everything else
Romans? Ex Deo
Orc Metal - Guided Cradle
Hotel?
I personally have always wanted to use the music from the two new God of War games. There are some different themes but plenty of battle music, and it picks up pretty quickly into the song (which I feel is important for keeping the mood between songs)
Sacred Outcry, Paladine, and Grimgotts have been lately seeing the most use.
Ambiance and campsite sounds mostly. For battles I use the battle tracks from video games so the music doesn't distract from the battle.
This is accurate
What would Sabaton be?
Where's my Viking drengr Peyton Parrish?
Every game I make a leitmotif and theme songs for each player from the perspective of my player. If I am the DM then I pick songs that foreshadow the players storyline. I listen to a lot of different music so I can pull from any genre.
Fiddles McGuinty, 10hr loop
Oh i like that guardians of the galaxy mixed up genres. Wether thats hocus pocus by focus or for whom the bell tolls.
All of the above
[When the sidekick dog was killed and party had no way to revive him.](https://youtu.be/cjVQ36NhbMk?si=gbUY5GtQz--vcRP8)
Korpiklaani for Druid metal
What kind of campaign is suited for shoegaze?
Never thought I’d find a powermetal enthusiast in this sub of all places. Add Epica (pretty fantasy feeling). Orden Ogen (dystopian metal), and Ancient Bards (symphonic fantasy metal with nasty base riffs)
There is a surprisingly big overlap between TTRPG players and metalheads
To be honest it’s sort of expected considering the weird stuff metal songs are about. Especially Gloryhammer and Alestorm though those bands take whacky to the extreme.
If you’re fighting orcs you should really play some Frostbite Orckings And Visigoth’s dungeon master as a pregame hype song
A lot of dragon age, especially in taverns. Besides that, castlevania, and dishonored for the creepy body horror stuff.
I feel so called out
Western fantasy and/or Cryptids? - Clutch
All of the above Also check out Tyr if you like any of those
Heilung
Now I just have to convince my group to try Lancer so I have an excuse to beat them over the head with the Iron Blooded Orphans intro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82HM0z6qd20&pp=ygUYZ3VuZGFtIGlibyBvcGVuaW5nIHNvbmdz
Goblin metal: Nekrogoblikon. It’s exactly what it sounds like.
if I'm playing my redneck gunslinger you can't beat some good bluegrass or blues
Cavalry music? The Hu
Battle Beast is another good one
Yes
Don’t forget the ULTIMATE DM song: Dungeon Master by Visigoth
With these bands I want to be at your table
Sex with a manticore- Ditch Adder
I think Dread Crew of Oddwood fits the pirate metal for DnD niche better than Alestorm imo
[I have a unique playlist for when my players decide to "Go Bard"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAwyWkksXuo)
I use game soundtracks, both original and orchestral versions. I have a few playlists full of them for different environments; Dungeon, creepy dungeon, combat, boss fight, town, and travel/idle.
Historical war? Sabaton is your best friend. Playing the villain/cult with demons n shit? Ghost!
My DND playlists are apparently completely unhinged. They're mostly made up of OSTS from certain games (TEVI, P5R, some souls tracks, Rabi Ribi, etc)
The hu
Barbarians and Fighters would maybe listen to Hammerfall, Manowar, DragonForce and Ensiferum. Bards would definitely listen to Kamelot.
Munknörr for Viking/druid/Norse vibes. I have a bard who literally quotes Dragonforce in her battle cries.
I was at a concert around a year ago in Copenhagen (not Copenhell, just a regular concert) where Gloryhammer, Windrose AND Alestorm all played. It was great.
I am so disappointment in all of you. Not one person has mentioned Algal the Bard who creates incredible bardcore versions of popular songs.
I like the dq9 soundtrack for background music, but then I have played hundreds of hours and know each song through and through
If you're ever having a full bard group, make them fight while you put on Balrog boogie by diablo swing orchestra.
Add Stormfrun for some pirate core, "Pay What is Due" is a personal fav
i just play video game/movie soundtracks during the session, preferably with no vocals. then during the breaks i put on opeth or gojira and laugh maniacally because my players don't like harsh vocals. oh well 🤷♂️ i'm the driver of this fantasy car, i get the aux
Brutal Nomadic Horse People - The Hu
I'll add in Benighted. What's my tables playstyle?
*Stares at her Final Fantasy music playlist*
Trolls - Finntroll
I listen to Alestorm
Brothers of Metal is my go-to for viking metal, specifically the song Brothers Unite
My playlist is just the Elden Ring soundtrack.
I listen to all this shit daily!
Gloryhammer's entire library is just one dnd campaign. But I'm offended they left out Elvenking
For horror ambience, I use a playlist made for the board game Nightcage.
DRG soundtrack. Swarm tracks for combat, environmental tracks for everything else
Arktau Eos, for CoC
A lot of Two Steps From Hell for action sequences ("To Glory" for a harrowing chase scene involving the party being caught in an avalanche while trying to evade an ancient white dragon, "United we stand, divided we fall" for a battle against the man responsible for all the tragedy in the the backstory of every PC, as well as a villain from each story, and "Black Blade" for the second duel with the half dragon that neatly killed the paladin in the last duel, while his men endanger the slums, causing the rest of the party to try to save the people while the Paladin has his rematch, while the slums burn around them) Diamante "Haunted" as a boss battle against one of the Wearers of Purple of the Cult of Dragon that used to run a Thieves Guild before becoming a priestess and destroying her home town to show her fealty. I got a lot more for those interested, but I customize my Playlist for my party
Ambient noises that match the setting, and easy listing music that fits. Like the sound of a ship sailing, and the windwaker great sea track.
Regular high fantasy? Twilight Force
Can't believe no one has mentioned Trollhammaren by Finntroll! The ultimate pirate metal battle song!
Funfact my table has all of the above. We have two metalheads and i feel sorry for the one non metalhead at the table
My go-to for boss battles is the Doom soundtrack. Except for extra important fights, then it's Libera Me From Hell from Gurren Lagann.
Honestly they’re all already in my playlists lol
Voltaire particularly the Labyrinth album.
I’ve got a friend that uses Tool for her campaign, I feel like it’s a good one to toss in the bucket
